I never imagined that I would be giving a chain restaurant five stars, but I need to give this place the recognition that it deserves! I'm staying at a hotel nearby and didn't want to go too far by myself so I saw from Yelp that there was an IHOP or a Ruby Tuesdays. This place had better Yelp reviews and that's how I made my decision. I was surprised to see so many stars at an IHOP, but now I definitely see why! As soon as I walked in, I could tell that the place was very well taken care of! I don't know if it's new, but it definitely looks new. It's so bright and welcoming inside and it's super clean and well put together! It wasn't very busy when I came in and I was seated right away by a manager. My server's name was Manny and his customer service was exceptional. The best customer service I've ever received at an IHOP, the best customer service that I've had in a while actually. I interacted with another server who randomly had a question about my watch and she was really friendly. The staff seem to enjoy their jobs and that really makes a difference in the customer experience. I was pleasantly surprised that the ketchup bottles and syrup bottles were nice and clean!! So many places that I go to, especially other IHOP locations, have dirty and greasy ketchup bottles and sticky syrup bottles. I ordered a chicken and bacon ranch sandwich or something like that. It was very well put together, a neat presentation and it tasted pretty good for chain food! The avocado on the sandwich was really fresh and it was a big portion! Obviously I'm not saying the food was spectacular, but it was pretty good for chain food. Overall, I just think this place deserves five stars. If you're staying at a hotel in the area, ditch your hotel food and come here for great service and good prices. read more

Then as I waited I noticed the restaurant was more than half empty. I waited 30 minutes and noticed they haven't called anyone to be seated. I asked the front desk how long he said he didn't know. The manager was not available and there were many people upset and walking away. I dont know what happened but that used to be my weekend breakfast place. Not any more they either need more staff or a new manager. Then again I saw several staff members just standing around playing with the there phones. The area around the Jersey Gardens Mall has seen a lot of development over the course of the past five years. Where there were once empty plots of land now stand hotels, theaters and restaurants. A gleaming section of this used to be the Jersey Garden Diner, a big red and chrome structure that was catching to the eye, but never seemed to do much business. Now that property has been taken over by a chain. With its exterior renovated to match the familiar blue and beigi IHOP colors, the interior maintains much of the original structure but with new, warmer decor. The restaurant is roughly an L shape. You come in at the right angle on the "L" and can wait in a comfortable waiting area (with lots of bench space) before you get seated. The restaurant then goes off to the left or right. This time around I was seated to the left. I've been trying to eat healthier lately so IHOP was not my first choice of restaurants, but it was the closest thing to a diner in the general vicinity so I went for it. I was seated quickly and the staff was friendly while also being efficient. I noticed there are two cashiers and then two additional stations for waiters to put in their orders, very nice. When I looked at the menu, buried under listings of bacon and cheesecake pancakes is a nice healthy set of omelets. I chose the mushroom, spinach and cheese omelet with a side of fruit instead of the pancakes. For some added fun I tossed in a side of turkey sausage. When the food arrived, the omelet was easily 1/3 bigger than I expected. The sausage order gave me four small links (roughly the size of store bought breakfast sausages) and the fruit was a nice mix of canteloupe, grapes and honeydew. The omelet was a huge surprise not just in size, but also in flavor. It had a wonderful hollandaise sauce on it that was creamy and light in flavor. The veggies were cooked well and the omelet was definitely hearty. The turkey sausage was spicy and tasted fantastic. The fruit plate seemed a bit small at first, but I was so gorged on the other food I realized quickly it was actually just the right size. I also ordered coffee, and true to IHOP style they leave a pitcher of coffee for you at the table - awesome! My entire order came out to around $15, which was more than respectable considering the sheer amount of food I had on my plate. The setting is clean and nice looking, the staff is good and the food is worth the money and tasty. I'm happy to know I now have another breakfast stop in the area! read more

My 2nd time to an IHOP and while our table and menu was a little bit sticky from all the syrupy goodness from customers past, the service was fairly accomodating - especially seeing we were situated in the back. Good bang for your buck, but it is really best to avoid ordering anything too big. The prices do sort of reflect the quantity of food you're gonna get so be wise and watch the wasteline. read more

The chicken fried steak was really delicious, crispy, and pretty tender on the inside. In fact, it was one of the best I've ever had, and can easily stand toe to toe with the one they serve at Cowgirl in the Village. However, the sauce that it came with was way too thick and gummy. What a shame. Sadly, beyond the chicken fried steak, this place failed in pretty much every ways. The steak knife smelled like a really grimy rag, which was very unpleasant and I had to ask for a new one. The over-easy eggs had an unpleasant snot-like film of uncooked egg white. When I find myself working in the wonderful land of Newark, I always end up here for breakfast. Be it here or the dreaded Seaport Diner. The staff is pretty cool. I've never had issues with the folks on the morning side. It's actually a rather large space - they have plenty of seating. I've never seen it get too crazy so you would never have to worry about waiting around, for example. It's right across from Jersey Gardens which may give the impression that it may be generating quite the ruckus here, but I've never personally seen it. I guess the food courts in JG keep the crowd under control there. The only thing I don't like about IHOP in general is that I hate their omelettes. With a passion. They're like.. mega-fluffy. But seriously - you won't be unsatisfied with this IHOP. The staff is great, food is good, you'll fill your belly and be on your miraculous way. Parking was quick and close to the door. Wait time was not bad at all for a Sunday morning. Was told the wait would be about 15 mins and it took less then 10 mins. To my surprise the syrup and whip cream were subtle enough to add just the right amount of sweetness to the plate. Very good meal and for only $12 (excluding tip). The server was attentive enough for a single diner but would have to step up her game a bit to keep up with the demands of more than one person. Water refills were lax (had to request on 2 occasions) but she was very polite and accommodating to these basic requests. And for those that have to dine with people (coworkers in my case) that refuse to eat breakfast they have regular food as well for cheaper than the average AppleBee's prices (like Spinach n Artichoke dip 3.99). When I hear IHOP, I think of pancakes and the inevitable wait for a table. But to my surprise, the 6 of us were seated promptly in the back area of the restaurant. I didn't order any of their special pancakes because a few friends had pancakes with their order plus there was Strawberry Cheesecake pancakes for sharing around the table. I went for the spinach and mushroom omelette with a side of fresh fruit. The omelette was HUGE! It was delicious especially with a touch of hollandaise sauce. I spread some love by sharing my omelette. In doing so, I was able to sample the yummy, fluffy pancakes and tater tots. There's 4 choices of syrup on each table: Butter Pecan, Bluberry, Strawberry and Original. The butter pecan was my favorite! My fresh fruits were, surprisingly, ripe to perfection. The pineapples, canteloupe, honeydew and grapes were a nice compliment to my fluffy yet filled omelette. Service was attentive considering places like this can get quite busy. This was an enjoyable experience for a 'diner like' chain restaurant that I never thought much of. The portion sizes definitely do correlate with the prices. So take it easy on the wallet and your waistline (and guilt) may thank you too. And yes, the Strawberry Cheesecake was good! read more

IHOP is an old family favorite. We have fond memories of waking up on Saturday mornings growing up and going with family friends (& their kids) to the IHOP on Route 17 nearby Rutherford. This particular location is conveniently located directly across from the Jersey Garden Outlets. They are very clean and quite spacious as well. We ordered a wide variety of goods and breakfast items including the Bananas Foster French Toast, Veggie Omelet and a side of mashed potatoes. I wouldn't really order any of the above again. They were really quite average, but the side of fluffy buttermilk pancakes were really good. Just order those, everything else is not up to par. read more
