Germinal Stage Denver - Free Coffee

Germinal Stage Denver

(5 reviews)

Great theater - quality acting and productions…read more The venue itself is an old auto mechanic shop and it is still quite chilly and drafty and it is clear the actors smoke inside the building. There's a lot of cement and dark paint and cinderblocks. There are no creature comforts except for a pot of coffee and a drinking fountain. So keep that in mind if you like a glass of wine before the theater. As always - the productions are usually classic and exceptional. So if you are a true theater aficionado, this is exactly what you're looking for! It is theater set in the rawest conditions, and there is something very artsy about that!

Germinal has been around for nearly four decades, and stages four or five shows a year. Seating…read moreabout 100 people, it's small - but, the layout is great, and you should have a decent view no matter where you're seated. Also, I found the seating at Germinal to be much more comfortable than at a lot of other similar venues. So, what should you expect? Well, when they say they're a minimalist theater, they're not kidding! The sets leave quite a bit to your imagination, but (from what I've seen) the acting more than makes up for it. Insider tip: Check their website for specials, as they do run 2-1 tickets, meaning you could see a show for under $12. There is a small lot behind the theater, but just plan on street parking. Also, if you have a choice, bring your clunker. The neighborhood is a little iffy. Overall, I'd definitely recommend Germinal, and I'm looking forward to going back.

I've been going here since moving to Denver when I searched out where the internationally held "Nerd Nite" in Denver would be. I used to go to Nerd Nite in Wisconsin and many of the major metro areas have a Nerd Nite. So, that is how I discovered The Bug Theater. It's not quite as cool as the WI chapter, but it's still a good time! It's fun to learn stuff! Another great event there was the Emerging Filmmakers. Local filmmakers present their short films and you can make a comment about it afterwards, if you'd like. Or you can just listen to other's comments! It's a great time if you're into movies! A must see are the Acrocats. Again, I've also seen the show of performing cats in WI and have been waiting for years to see them here in Denver. I couldn't believe the date range as the show ran for something like 2-3 weeks and even more shocking was that she sold out every single day!!! Fun fact is that her first performance was here in Denver at The Bug even though she started the Acrocats out of Illinois (and is in Georgia as of late). They have several other events like comedy, as well. Definitely check something out there that you're into! It's sure to be a good time! The theater is small, I don't know if it's 100-something seating. But also, nice and cozy for these fun locals on stage ;)

There's a beautiful garden space in the back as well where you can sit surrounded by plants. The show itself was very engaging for our kids (age 4, 6) as there is audience participation and jokes during the performance. They even incorporated all of the kids name at the beginning and a very positive introduction about when to listen vs when to engage. Very impressive that the owner does all of this herself. Our only minor complaint is that there were one or two pieces of dialogue not well suited for kids (e.g. stealing away someone's girlfriend) and some verbal fillers. However, overall we had a great time and will definitely be back for the next show!

We enjoyed the pre-show decorating of our "ticket puppet" with construction paper and markers and looking around at all the wonderful puppets and marionettes hanging throughout the building. The main theater area is very roomy, clean and quiet. It has little "mini theaters" set up inside where the kids could put on their own puppet shows before and after the big performance. The show was very good! Our two-year old was captivated for most of the time, smiling and waving her little "ticket puppet" in the air. My only minor disappointment in the performance itself was that it had a fair amount of "filler" in it, which can be understandable considering the story in question, but the extra banter of the "father not being able to find any food while hunting" or the kids "finding and eating the mouse's berries in the forest" caused a few of the kids to lose interest. It almost seemed like it would make more sense to put on two shorter performances than trying to extend one story to fill the time allotment. It may also have to do with this particular story. Perhaps other stories don't have such a dramatic problem? Anyway, please don't let this dissuade you from visiting the theater! We had a great time and your kids will love it too!

Love this new live music venue!…read more Tickets: The Federal has the same owners as The Oriental, so you can get tickets for The Fed at The Oriental's box office as well the box office at The Fed and online. You will save yourself some money on fees if you pay cash at either venue's box office. Balcony: There is a tiered balcony upstairs where everyone can see the stage while seated. Don't be the asshat that goes up to the balcony and stands in front of people. Upstairs is for seated enjoyment of the show. Downstairs is for standing. ADA Seating: There are a few ADA seats available downstairs near the stage. Be aware, the main floor is sloped, so you'll need to navigate that sloped floor to get to the ADA seats. Drinks: There is a bar downstairs near the main entrance that is double-sided, so you can get drinks in the lobby or at the back of the venue main floor (similar to Boulder Theater). If you use a card, they will close you out with each transaction (no opening a tab and no hassle to close your tab at the end of the show). Parking: There is no parking lot for the venue. All parking is on the street. Plan ahead and give yourself time to hunt for a spot. Rideshare: If you take a rideshare, DO NOT use the venue address, use an address around the corner. There is no space to pull off on Federal in front of the venue. Federal is a very busy street. It is incredibly unsafe to have your Uber stop on Federal in front of the venue. You are very likely to get rear-ended. Events: Highly recommend you follow the venue on Facebook. This is the way I hear about all the new shows they book, when tickets go on sale and when they do special deals on tickets.
