Background information: I became a licensed skydiver in 2010. Once I got into the sport, I started hearing other skydivers say how great the tunnel was for training. I started researching tunnels and always wanted to try it out, but there weren't any tunnels in Texas and I didn't want to have to travel to Orlando, Arizona or Colorado. I should also mention that I had done about 5 minutes in the Las Vegas Wind Tunnel, which is about 25 year old technology and doesn't even compare to the modern iFly tunnels of today. Then finally I heard the amazing news that iFly was building a tunnel in Austin, TX. Just a short 3 hour drive from my home in Houston, TX. I got a discount by pre-booking an hour of tunnel time before the building was even complete. I think I paid $750 for an hour block. So I ended up splitting the hour into two 30 minute sessions that I split with my girlfriend, who also skydives, so 15 minutes each one day and 15 minutes each on a second day.
Our first trip to iFly Austin was on 3/22/13. I had called ahead and told iFly that we both wanted to focus on freeflying (specifically sitflying), which is a more advanced freefall position. They explained that even though we were both experienced freeflyers in the sky, we would still have to prove our RW skills in the tunnel before jumping straight into freeflying. I understood that this was their policy with everyone and agreed to see how it went. When we got to the facility, we restated that we wanted to focus on freeflying, however the instructor we were paired with wasn't rated to be a freefly instructor, so even if we proved ourselves in the first few minutes, we would be stuck on our bellies the entire 30 minute session. I tried to see if there was a freefly instructor available, but iFly wouldn't let me switch. This was a huge disappointment to both me and my girlfriend, since this isn't the reason that we booked our tunnel time. I did still enjoy myself. There's no way you can spend 15 minutes in the tunnel and not drastically improve your skills at whatever you're working on. I almost considered doing a 30 minute session myself, but I'm glad I didn't cause after just 15 minutes my whole body was sore for the next 2 days.
We made our second trip to iFly Austin on 7/5/13. This time we made absolute sure to get a freefly instructor (sorry I don't remember his name), and he was awesome to work with. After a couple minutes of RW, I was backflying, then five minutes after that, I was working on my sitfly skills. It was so much fun. My girlfriend was slower learning the backfly, but we both had a much better time.
The only real complaint I have is sometimes it's hard to understand the instructors directions when you're in the tunnel sine you can't hear anything and he's only using hand signals and miming. Obviously, I know all the basic skydiving signals he was using, but that wasn't enough to understand everything he was trying to tell me. It probably would've been better if I did 5 minutes instead of 15 so I could get more frequent debriefs. That probably would've helped my progression a little bit.
Overall, iFly is an awesome experience that I would recommend to just about anyone, regardless of skill level, who is looking for some adventure. I heard that they are building an iFly that's supposed to open in north Houston in 2015, so I'll definitely be checking that out. read more
