My kid did a week of this camp at the beginning of summer, and we liked it so much that we signed him up for two more weeks at the end. Kids are given a good mixture of guided "we're all working on this type of project" as well as free construction time to make side figures and add personal touches. He is hooked. This camp can't be beat! My son and daughter both love going. The camp themes are fun and make each week a different experience for them, but what stays the same is this: the kids learn how to use tools, imagine new creations and get adult support with how to build them, and create parts of the camp that remain there long after they leave (like kid-created playground equipment, forts, etc.). The leaders do a fantastic job leading and fostering a productive, joyful environment. We have many friends who have sent their kids there over the years and love it, too. read more

Sent our almost 4 year old to Tinkercraft camp last week. I was kind of nervous because he didn't know anyone and there are lots of tools, but it was great! He made so many cool things and was really happy to go each day. I would definitely sign him up again! read more

This place is amazing! My kids have done a Girl Scout activity here and attended a camp. They absolutely loved it. Their staff is very hands-on and safety conscious while assisting the kids the power tools. We will definitely be back for more activities here! read more

My kids have done several summer camps at Austin Tinkering School over the past few years. They absolutely love it! They are taught to safely and properly use a variety of tools ("Mom! I got to use a drill press!") and resources. The projects they work on as a group are awesome and they also have "free build" time to do whatever interests them that day. This week, they made patio chairs! Last year one of the challenges was to make the tallest stable chair they could, and the limiting factor turned out to be the height of the ceiling! They have opportunities for group work and individual efforts, some guided projects and some entirely independent from inception to design to implementation to decoration. One of the best things is the way Kami, Alex and the rest of the staff nurture their self-direction and independence through trusting them with "adult" tools (when they've demonstrated readiness). read more

My son's 8th birthday party was funtastic! They had a great time creating toys out of broken toys. The playscape was a hit. My son loved the 3-d printer. The kids left feeling accomplished and proud. The best gift for his birthday was the time we spent tinkering. I am so happy this place exists! read more

My son was ecstatic to go to the Austin Tinkering School camps every day! The space is so inspiring, the staff are helpful and guide the students, giving them the chance to experiment, try new things, and make cool, cool stuff. They capped off the week with a DIY waterpark that blew me away. I even took my shoes off and got in there - I couldn't help it! We will be back for after school projects and future camps. My son attended a camp at the AustinTinkering School and he absolutely loved it! Each day he told me about a project or activity he got to work on. The child centered approach at the school left my child feeling empowered and excited about his work. There is nothing else I've seen similar to this. It is gem. Only wish we lived closer. Austin Tinkering School is the coolest place! What an amazing place to inspire kids' creativity, independence and self-confidence in taking on incredible building projects on their own! This place is awesome, I was introduced to Kami & ATS when I first moved to Austin six years ago, it's been really cool to see them bring to reality this beautiful vision of place where kids (+ grown-ups) of all ages can come build things, take things apart, and learn to use all kinds of tools (drills, saws, 3d printers, you name it!). The team there has this amazing ability to walk this fine line of helping/teaching/mentoring on the one hand, but also allowing space for exploration/discovery/self-directed making on the other. Even this amazing patient guidance of slowly walking kids through the initial frustration/boredom of first learning to some process/tool and letting/helping them get through to the place where proficiency process/tool is now a starting point for making/building a whole new world of possibility! read more

My 7yo son absolutely loved this camp--woodworking, leather working, sewing--and so much more. The autonomy and creativity they foster there is amazing. Bonus, unlike the usual "art" your kid brings home from camp, you will actually be wowed and find it beautiful and useful. Honestly, I wish mom could spend a week there. Highly recommend. My kids had so much fun at the Tinkering school this summer! It was amazing seeing them take such pride in what they created, and come home inspired to continue tinkering and building. The staff was so great at guiding them without taking away my children's ownership of their projects. Walking in to pick them up everyday felt like walking into a bubble of unbridled creativity.
