Ichiban isnt that all, the sushi is on point SOMETIME, if they arent in a hurry to do it bc of closing time which is around 10:00 according to them not the closing Time. I love the tigers eye sushi roll thats probably the only reason why I still go there well I only do to go's now bc dinning in isnt the best decision. The waitresses are nice I always got along with them, the owner needs to smile more and he needs to appreciate his customers. Please take that into consideration. Dont force ur waitresses and waiters to smile, but you cant smile.. not going back anytime soon. read more

I love the food, but every time I go back I wonder when will they finally scrape all the goo and sticky, dirty old grease off of the edges of their Hibachi grills where they cook people's food. I always watch in horror each peace of the food they flip around and hope it won't fly to far to the edge to touch the built-up yuckiness. If they have this right in front of their customers, I wonder what does their back kitchen look like. :/ read more

Pretty good, what you would expect from a typical habachi. I like there is a little more room at this place, and priced fairly well. I have eaten here a few times and have not been disappointed. The chefs are actually pretty good technically too. The only thing I wished the habachi came with is vegetables too. read more

Get sushi from here regularly and its as good as just about anywhere else I've gone. Dinners have always been good but not mind blowing or anything. Not a fan if the hibachi theatrics so i usually avoid all that but orders from the kitchen i think are the same. they give you a lot of food and you always leave full. It's unfortunate, because the food is amazing and the waitress and chef were wonderful. However, one person muddied the whole experience and made me wish that I'd never spent my hard earned money there -the host. He literally never spoke or acknowledged us besides picking up the menu and walking to the table. My daughter and I figured we would just follow him. I thanked him when we sat and he did not respond. Then we got up and asked where the bathroom was and he almost frowned his face at us and just pointed leaving us again to figure it out. Still I stayed and I wanted to tell him that the chef and waitress were great but he never acknowledged me! In fact he purposely turned his back to me. it wasn't until I said "excuse me" that he HALF way turned so that we got his profile that we were able to tell him. So if the food means more to you than the service then yes go to ichiban but if you value the whole experience of eating out, DO NOT GO TO THIS RESTAURANT! You will kick yourself for enduring it for raw fish. read more

The waitstaff has a big responsibility for setting the tone of the experience. Our waitress was not interested in us as human beings which showed not only in the way she served, but she never asked about birthdays and we had 3 at the table. She cleared plates once and left the rest - which was the multitude in use. She didn't give us bags for our left overs. The hostess graciously asked when we were leaving the restaurant. Since it was my first time there, I didn't know what to expect. In other Japanese restaurants, they inquire about celebrations and plan accordingly. She didn't even ask, but the Chef did. He was wonderful and his food was good. However, since we had a party of 12 and the gratuity was already added, maybe the server thought she would coast on this one. What a shame. We are a restaurant family and we usually tip graciously even if the gratuity is added. Not last night! Although I was with my family and it was to be a festive occasion, it didn't feel like it with that woman serving us. I know I have a mouth and I could have asked her about birthdays but since we all got the impression she didn't want to be there, we decided not to ask more of her. My family discussed her lack of interest unprovoked and my daughter even took back the extra tip was was giving and left it at the 18% charged. We will not eat there again. read more

I've dined at Ichiban a few times and have always enjoyed myself. But this occasion was absolutely terrible. I am appalled and I feel disrespected. We were there for a birthday dinner which is a very special occasion being that it was the young ladies 21st birthday. We waited nearly 40 minutes for the chef to come out of the back just to cook the food and when he came out he was very dry. There was another party with a birthday and the cook was singing happy birthday and when we asked if ours would sing he said no. Straight up no. Very rude. On top of waiting for him to come the steak was veryyy tough. Mind you we ordered medium well. It more than well done. And if that wasn't bad enough we waited damn near 40 minutes again for the check. They asked us what our meals were about 5 times I kid you not. Everyone in our group was upset. And they added gratuity to our bills when the service was awful and would not take it off. We arrived at 7:30 and didn't leave that hell hole until 10. I haven't had an experience like this at a restaurant before ever. I'm extremely disappointed and I definitely will not be returning. I'm disgusted. They behaves as though they had never dealt with humans before. Like we were speaking a different language. And they did nothing to make the situation right. Absolutely horrific. read more

I had been waiting for Ichiban to open for months. Everyday I would pass by looking for an OPEN sign. Finally to my excitement Ichiban open it's doors. I went in on a Wednesday after work to see what Ichiban was all about. Upon entering I was promptly greeted by the hostess who asked me where I would like to sit; in the dinning room or at the Hibachi. I was intrigued by the private booths at the back of the dinning room, but decided to try out the Hibachi table. I followed the hostess to a table where I was sat next to two others parties. I was excited by the authentic Japanese dinning experience. It took me a while to decide what to order, but eventually I decided on the steak and shrimp combo dinner. I also placed an order for a shrimp tempura roll and the special Ichiban roll as an appetizer. After placing my order the server brought out clear soup and a side salad. The soup consisted of a light flavored broth, mushroom slices and crunchy tempura flakes. The salad was topped with a delicious ginger dressing. The sushi arrived a few minutes later. The presentation was very pleasing to the eyes, and the flavors were even more pleasing on my palette. The shrimp tempura roll was flavorful with cucumber, avocado and small orange caviar. The Ichiban roll also had shrimp tempura on the inside with generous slices of white fish, tuna, white tuna and yellowfin tuna on top. Drizzled over everything was a sweet eel sauce. The chef came to our table a few minutes later. He started off the show with a burst of flames that lit up the entire table. He cooked the fried rice and then the meat and seafood, all with a skill that must have taken years to cultivate. The show was mesmerizing, an asset to the meal. My steak was cooked exactly to my preferred level of doneness, and the shrimp was plump and juicy. Both the protein and vegetables were grilled in a flavorful ginger sauce. The chef provided us with two sauces to compliment the meal, one was the same ginger sauce used on the grill and the other was a great seafood sauce. The manager visited our table during the meal, asking us how the meal was. He also answered questions we had. From this I learned that Ichiban would be getting their liquor license in a few short weeks, as well as the name of the delightful seafood sauce: it is commonly referred to as Yum Yum sauce. All in all the experience was great. The food was not only filling, but delicious, the service was prompt and the prices were reasonable. The atmosphere was fun and inviting. On my way out, I was greeted by the owner, a young guy by the name of Sky. He was friendly and inquired of my dinning experience. I assured him that I would be back. Three days later I returned to Ichiban with my family in tow. Though the night was much busier, the service and quality of the meal remained the same. I would definitely recommend Ichiban to anyone looking for a fun dinning experience and a fantastic meal. read more

Taken to dinner out with my girlfriend and my boyfriend and had a BLAST!!! She and I shared the Loveboat Sushi platter and let me tell you it was AWESOME~! My boyfriend had the sirloin steak on the open grill thing and it was VERY entertaining! Great price for the show and meals along with some nice dinner drinks too!! The sushi rolls are good, but not great. With 50% off price for dinner, it is a good deal. However, the service is terrible. I totally agree with some other comments that the waitstaff are totally disinterested. On our last trip there, the waitress was not only disinterested but RUDE. I've never seen any waitress like that any where else. My friend and I had very unhappy experience there. My friend said he would never go there again. This was awful from beginning to end. The staff wasn't at all helpful, service was sub-par at best(e.g. quite slow but pushy, and we never received our app.) The sushi couldn't compete with our usual fave Yotsuba, nor could the chicken teriyaki that our son ordered. The final disappointment was taking our baby to the restroom to change her diaper and finding no changing station, and noone was willing to accommodate the situation. boo/hiss. I recently visited Ichiban Ann Arbor and had a wonderful experience. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by a friendly hostess and manager. I was seated at one of the grills with a few other couples. Our waitress was very pleasant and friendly. She explained the menu and answered any questions we had. My wife and I ordered a crispy spicy tuna roll and gyoza for an appetizer. Both were DELICIOUS, and the sushi was 30% off. GREAT DEAL :) For dinner we got chicken, steak, and shrimp. The soup, salad, fried rice, steak, and chicken were very good, but the shrimp was a little over cooked. At the end of our meal our waitress boxed up our food and kindly sent us on our way. i've been to ichiban twice now, but have only had the sushi portion not the hibachi- its a large building in the middle of a very suburban area parking lot next to the starbucks. the first time i came i had no complaints, pretty standard sushi menu. i had the urchin roe which was a fair market price, and the geoduck clam. the second time i came which was quite recently (march 2011) i noticed they now offer 20 percent off sushi which makes it seem a lot tastier. i ordered the roll with sashimi scallop on top which was my favorite one. the sashimi was very fresh and not fishy. lobster tempura roll was also excellent. i did not notice any masago or mentaiko roll here unfortunately. the roll of the day was quite unappealing too, something weird with a mushy green mayonnaise middle and mango on top and it was served with pringles chips, i guess their attempt to be creative with it but it just seemed tacky. the service was a little slow and it wasn't even busy. worth it if you are in the area but i wouldn't make a special trip. read more

I called a week a head of time for 11 adults, 5 children for my son's birthday, was seated all together, got our soup, salad and the grill was started, the chef came out to cook....and it went down hill from there. He served 6 of our group and I asked him after the 6 got their rice and he put the meat on. Ummm what about the rest of our group. he said that's all he got was the 6 and we had to wait for the next grill. They sat 6 people from another group down. We had to wait for them to order, gt soup, then salad, then their appetizer THEN the chef came out and started and served their 6 and the rest of our group. I asked the person that had got our drinks why this is and she said, Well that's just the way I put in the order, we are short of cooks. HMMMM well it doesn't matter that you are short, the second chef could have apparently done all of our group. By the time the second of our group even got their food the first part was done and kids were ready to go. What was the point of making reservations and REALLY??? And once our first 6 were served and drinks refilled, they didn't come back to check on our second group to see if we needed refills etc......apparently they considered us done too. Not a happy person once we left there. No wonder the place was almost empty during our visit. It's gone done hill since our last visit. Also staff at this place is not friendly, happy or much of anything. Just bad all the way around. read more

We have been to the restaurant at least 5 times when we are in town. The experience was lousy tonight. The family sitting with our group ordered extra rice except one of their kids who got extra rice anyway. By the time they got around to our group we got not quite a spatula full of rice. They were light on vegetables and in my opinion light on portions. We ordered sushi as well and if it hadn't been for that it would have been less than a 90$ Chinese take out meal. On top of that they charged 18% gratuity to our party of six that got 3 SEPARATE bills. When confronted about they denied that we got less portions although our entire group agreed that we did. I've eaten at hibachi places many times and I never leave completely full- except form this run to Ichiban. It would have been ok if they had said they shorted us and were going to cook some more. Instead they just ignored it. So, since we pay big money to be stuffed full and weren't, then we will not be back. And out family members who are locals will let everyone else know that they have begun to skimp on portions. To bad, we used to look forward to eating there. read more

Service with a frown. I visited here a few days ago with my six year old daughter and a friend. Since it was only three of us and nearing close time, we were unable to eat at one of the cooktop tables which was fine with us. We sat on the other side of the restaurant near the bar area. After the waitress took our order, she never returned to our table until it was time to cash out. She was busy attending to two other tables and never bothered to come back to ours until it was time to cash out. Another worker brought out our food out and refilled our drinks. My Teriyaki chicken was so overcooked and dry that it tasted like rubber. I had to flag down another worker to ask for another piece of teriyaki chicken. He replaced it but it wasn't much better than the first. Which leaves me to wonder if they brought out the same piece. He never apologized for the inconvenience, never asked how it was, and he didn't offer another menu item. His only reply was that the second piece of chicken was as good as it gets because otherwise it would be undercooked. I was shocked. I am not use to places that treat people so rude and unwelcoming. I have eaten teriyaki chicken before, it's not as delicate as a steak, it doesn't take a lot of work for it to come out tender. This place lacks customer service and I don't recommend it to anyone, unless you want to pay someone to treat you rude and ignore you. read more
