Horrid customer service. They even lost my luggage, when they supposedly found it they called me to the airport on three different occasions to pick it up and it wasn't there . A month later it is still lost. They do not replace any items in luggage they lost. In fact, they don't even offer you a toothbrush. Took them out of Munich, and they are the ONLY airline there without self-serve kiosks and also do not offer online check-in. That means EVERYONE, including those without checked luggage has to wait in line for the 2 counters they have to get a boarding pass. It took almost 2 hours for everyone in line to check in, which delayed the flight and almost made half the plane miss their connecting flight in Iceland. Terribly inefficient airline. read more

After having missed our flight with Icelandair due to unforeseen circumstances, we requested to rebook. Icelandair's agents made no effort to assist us and, furthermore, cancelled our return flight (this was entirely unjust, as we still planned to go on the trip, and come back on the original date). Requesting that our return flight be refunded, we sent multiple emails to Icelandair, but did not receive as little as an acknowledgement that the message had been received. Icelandair is a corrupt and opportunistic corporation, which, through its policies, takes advantage of passengers' misfortunes to profit (essentially, our return flight seats had been sold to other customers, so that Icelandair could make double the money). Additionally, Icelandair treats its passengers with dismissiveness, which, despite its propaganda about customer service, reflects the reality that it does not value them. As fellow travellers on this site emphasize, heed the warning and DO NOT TRAVEL WITH ICELANDAIR, if you wish for a positive flight experience!!! read more

Hideously bad. Freakishly incompetent. The air crews are lovely people. The ground crews and customer service agents, on the other hand, are utterly useless. If you actually care about having luggage on your trip, look for another airline. If you plan to simply purchase everything you need at your destination, then go right ahead, but even then, don't expect to arrive anywhere close to the stated time. Every single flight is late, and even their own baggage handling company staff admits that they are notorious for losing baggage. Oh, sorry, did I say "lose"? That's what the unenlightened call it. IcelandAir representatives are quick to remind you that until your luggage has been undelivered for 21 days, it isn't "lost", but merely "delayed". Even when they have no idea where the luggage is. Try that yourself, next time you can't find something. For example, don't say "I've lost my keys", say "My keys' arrival has been delayed". See how much better you feel now? Of course, you're still no closer to having your keys, but at least you won't have to admit that you've lost anything. I'm 7 days into a trip right now, still without any of my bags, or my equipment. read more

Probably a decent option for flights if nothing goes wrong, but this past summer, I experienced the most frustrating day ever after having to delay a trip because l was under doctor's orders not to fly for 3 days. I knew there would be change penalties and fees, but I kept being told different things by different agents. I ended up just canceling the reservation altogether, and rebooking on Delta. About a month later, I received a refund in the amount of 1/2 the ticket's price, which would have been fair had agents not assured me that I would be able to receive a full refund. I'm just glad that I was not in the middle of my journey or on one of their flights when I became ill. Terrible experience at a time when I should have been resting and recovering and preparing for the trip changes. I've heard great things about this carrier as a low-cost option for getting to Europe, but the customer service is less than ideal. In this case, you get what you pay for. read more

This was the most uncomfortable flight I've ever been on in my life. My husband and I flew Icelandair to Zurich for our honeymoon, and what a mistake it was. We were packed in to an old 757 jet like sardines with no leg room, small arm rests and rock hard seats. The air was turned off most the time making the plane extremely hot and stuffy. The seats did lean back, but because the seats were so close together, when you leaned the seats back it smashed the legs of the person in back of you. I had the lady behind me begging me to put my seat back up...This was an 10hr red-eye flight overseas!!!! After a miserable 10 hours (and I wish I was exaggerating) we were waited over an hour for our bags at the baggage gate.. After thinking our bags may have been lost (many other people were waitin thinking the same thing) an intercom came on saying something on lines of, 'oops we found some extra bags in another truck and will be putting them through in soon'. Please, please save yourself the misery of flying with this air to Europe. It's not worth your money or your sanity. I've flow with many other airlines overseas and had great experiences: United, American and Hawaiian just to name a few. read more

I found Icelandair to be a great choice for a recent vacation. In a world where airline travel is getting more expensive and airlines rival banks in terms of searching for new sources of revenue, it was nice to see a slightly different business model at work. There were a few factors that initially led to my choosing them for this trip. One, they had flights that left/arrived in Boston at convenient times. Two, the flight was almost $600 cheaper than the next alternative for an open jaw ticket to/from Europe. Three, the layovers in Reykavik were about 1 hour so it didn't feel like a huge inconvenience. My outbound flight out of Boston left at 9:30 PM, which was great as most of the international travel rush through security, etc had passed. Since the airline serves food based on customer purchases (it is not included in the price of the ticket), I was able to eat dinner ahead of time, then once on board I could focus on going to sleep (yippee)! Since we had a layover in Iceland, you had about 4 hours of sleep time, so I could get to work on that right away. I didn't watch any moves on the flights, but looking at the list, there was some dated stuff (Speed --- Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves from the 90's). On the flight back to Boston from Europe, I did buy some lunch (harissa chicken with naan) and white wine. They take credit cards and will charge you in local currency, so your credit card company can get a better conversion rate for you. The chicken was good enough. The flights were a little chillier than some other airlines, but they did have some pretty heavy blankets to fight off the chill. I'll plan on using them again at some point. Iceland is on the list of destinations, and with a short 4-5 hour flight I can see myself using them again sometime soon. read more

Icelandair used to be a sort of idiosyncratic airline in that it mostly seemed normal, but then there were just weird things that ran counter to expectations. This is still the case, but they've toned down the jarring stuff (smelly fish for meals, the cocktail-party effect of everybody on board seeming to know each other), renovated their planes (tv screens!) and kept prices down. Connecting through Keflavik is a little strange, since you are doing it in what feels like the middle of the night your time, morning Iceland time, but in the winter, there's no difference that you can tell. Their presence at destinations can be a little obscure. In Stockholm, they're more or less handled by SAS for example, and when i flew them to Heathrow, they were in a bit of an obscure corner of the airport. But still, cheap tickets to Europe and free stay-overs in Iceland*, what's not to like? *one of these days i'll leave the airport read more

I have now flown Icelandair, 3 times and this is my final and last try with them!. I have never had a good flight with them, and it's one of the most "cheap" flights ever, everything costs but when their service doesn't match up there is no compensation. The staff is HORRIBLY inefficient and slow, last flight took nearly 2 hours to get a tiny glass of water. I had flights with NO working monitor, cabin severely overheated, unhelpful staff. Traveled out of Boston on the Sunday that Hurricane Irene was supposed to come through. First flight int he afternoon was cancelled and booked on a later flight. We didn't get out until almost 1 a.m., about 11 hours behind schedule. But the airline was great about it, re-booked us on new flights, made sure we got to Europe. Ours was one of only a handful of flights that got out of Boston that night. On the way back, they were nice enough to rebook us to give us a longer layover in Iceland so we could check out Reykjavik. All for no charge. The flights themselves were great. The small HD TVs in each seat offer a ton of great entertainment options, including music, TV shows and movies. The food was good too, but it's not free. read more

Icelandair does somethings very well and completely drops the ball on others. GOOD: The inflight experience was really great. The staff is bilingual and friendly. Inflight entertainment was excellent - even though my system was broken, they offered me an ipad. BAD: I missed an Icelandair flight due to a connection issue on another airline. I called their contact center for help, and it was a nightmare!!! The agents struggled to find me any options, and when they finally did, they were VERY expensive. There didn't seem to have any empathy for my situation. I ended up finding another option myself online for thousands less than the agent could. So, either the agents dont want to help customers find low cost options or they dont know how to find low cost options. Either case is awful!! Use them if you want, but just pray nothing goes wrong. DELAYED FLIGHT COMPENSATION- I am writing this review because when I was in Iceland, my flight was overbooked and I was offer 600 euros to get off the plane OR a free Iceland air flight to any location within a year. I got off the plane so fast! I was given a voucher for the 600 euros. Then I was given a ticket for hotel, ride to hotel, and meals. It was quite nice. Oh and also another plane ticket. When I got home, my friend and I mailed in the voucher. She contacted Brad Stevens (I am not sure how she got his name) and then she got the check back within the week! $661! It took me a lot longer to get my check, Brad was good at communication but the lost my voucher. Luckily I made a copy, and finally I got my check. read more

We arrived at Reykjavik airport and waited for our luggage for over an hour. Only to find out it had deliberately been held in Seattle because the plane was "overloaded". This happened to about six other passengers that I was aware of. Which was interesting given that the plane was not full at all. It seems they load it with cargo which takes precendence over passenger luggage. I didn't receive my luggage until 39 hours after arrival. read more

Flew Icelandair from JFK to KEF / KEF to LHR / AMS to KEF / KEF to JFK. Every single one of those flights was absolutely comfortable and the staff was professional. No cancellations and just a short 10 minute delay on the last leg. Would absolutely recommend them and would fly them again. This is compared to a crappy EasyJet flight on the same vacation where the flight attendants were treating passengers as if they were misbehaving students. Ugh. read more

We walked back We waited in the airport for 3 hours they did not assist us at all they had another flight leaving in 3 hours they did not put us on that flight as well. We took Iceland Air to Sweden out of Boston. The staff was friendly and kind. The plane was clean and I like that they had tv's for free in flight entertainment. They also had wifi available wifi available if you purchased it. The flights were smooth. We also had a last minute change to our return flight and they were accommodating in making that change. I only gave them a 4 as the seats were the most uncomfortable seats I've ever sat in. In both flights it was like they were running the heat and the plane was soo hot and stuffy. They also only offer meals and snacks that you have to pay for and you get one beverage on an international flight which is pretty long. read more

Wow, what a nightmare! One person in our family was denied boarding at MSP because of some three-month passport rule. My kid's passport expires this Fall and we had roundtrip tickets that would have been used long before. I don't know how they allow you to conveniently book these flights and input all of your info, but then you're out of luck as they won't let you board. I also called them multiple times to ensure we're good, and everything looked perfect, according to the call center. Fast forward to the airport day. The manager who apparently doesn't even work for them - just contracted - made a suggestion to leave our child at the airport and for the rest of us to go on! Upon about an hour long discussion, she told me not to worry, just call Icelandair tomorrow and get my tickets changed for another date. Yeah right! I called that evening and their call center closed at like 8 pm CDT. I called the next day, and was told I am out of luck, thank you for your donation basically. Again, I also bought return tickets for end of August and was told those are forfeited also. Altogether it's about 4K. Ok, I am a single parent with two children and this is a lot of money for anyone! I felt lied to by that supervisor at MSP who told me I'd be rebooked and her exact words were "you won't have to fight with them". Well, it's been exactly the opposite. I keep calling, I am hung up on, I am put down, talked down to, and plain disrespected. What an awful call center! They make any budget airline or cheap hotel chain look like luxury service. I have been flying over the Atlantic for the past 20+ years pretty regularly and this is the absolute worst. I was lied to and got fake promises, just to get rid of me. They don't sell out every flight, why not allow us to go on a different one if they have seats anyway?! I also was told by the call center that I should have called them before the flight. Well, they closed 30 min after the plane departed and you have to wait on hold at least an hour to get thru. I was also hung up on that night when I tried. Altogether, what a joke. I highly encourage all people who book through Iceland Air to *NOT* purchase their insurance since they make it very difficult to actually make a claim. This is *NOT* a general cancellation insurance. It ONLY COVERS MEDICAL SITUATIONS JUSTIFIED BY A DOCTOR'S NOTE!!!!! This is very, very inconvenient and not what most people consider typical cancellation insurance. I had a doctor's diagnosis report but they rejected it saying it wasn't signed by the doctor. I will chalk this up as just another way that Iceland Air nickel/dimes you after you purchase their tickets. BUYER BEWARE. read more

A horrible exprience from start to finish. Booked 2 flights but did them seperately and for some reason 1 had no luggage. I immediately called to adjust this but was told I hadn't ticked the section and instead of paying $10 more for the flight which would have included luggage I had to go online and pay $200 to add luggage. It took 2 phone calls and an hour on hold each time (I'm not exaggerating), and in the end I just paid it it online. Oh well, I marked it as my mistake. Then the nightmare began. Turned up at the airport and the luggage was still showing as unpaid on one flight. I was certain we had paid it online, we received confirmation and the ticket was upgraded to show luggag addede, which we had printed out. They said there was an error on the site and the payment was not taken. So despite putting in the payment details, having it shown as payment confirmed on the site, receiving an updated ticket and printing this out and presenting this to the staff, the airline staff now said it was my fault for not checking the payment had gone through via my bank and we had to pay again.. As a result we now had to pay $140 for the baggage (one way), which we had no choice but to pay. They wouldn't even allow us to pay the $100 for one way which we thought we had already paid (I'm putting it in dollars but actual payments were a mix of $, £ and Euro). On the stop over in iceland we complained to the help desk and they said they understood and that it wasn't out fault. We were told that a note was added to the system and we wouldn't have to pay on the way back and if we emailed customer support (no way were were going to call them again), they'd refund the money. We were very anxious about it and emailed customer support during our trip, and it got worse. They said there would be no refund and we would have to pay for luggage again. We explained, they asked to be emailed proof. We sent photo copies of the payment confirmation and ticket showing luggage, and they didn't reply. We tried again a second time and exactly the same, they said it was our fault and asked for proof, we sent it, they didn't reply. As a result we paid for the luggage again on the way back. To rub salt into the wound we had paid for exit row seats and during the online check in one of us was switch to a standard seat in the middle. We tried to change this online and it asked us to pay $60. At this stage we were too tired to try to fight it. We didn't pay and sat seperately and just got the horrible experience over with. We since complained to their customer service and suprise suprise there was no response. Anyone thinking of using this airline please do your research and read up on the many complaints you'll find about them online, especially with regards to customer service. It's possible that if there are no small errors or mishaps you would not have to deal with their customer service and then write a review about their Ok leg room and slightly bigger than average inflight screens, because you haven't experienced the customer service or been caught out by their small print tactics. But any slight issue or changes and you are in for a nightmare - it's really not worth the risk. Avoid this company at all costs. I just wish we'd been warned and read the reviews. read more

Do not fly this airline unless you are really desperate! They are never on time, no food in flight and not even ear phones for the entertainment! They were so late that we missed our connection and lost out on hotels, tickets for attractions and rental car. No even an " We are sorry". This was our honeymoon and really ruined it. Probability of losing luggage is 50% or more with connecting flights on this airline. This was my first trip ever with Iceland Air. Their personnel is NOT trained enough and almost know nothing. Got to my destination and my luggage was not there. Perhaps a connecting flight is too complex for this simple airlines. I asked specifically at check-in if I need to pick up my luggage anywhere during the trip and was told NO, it'll be delivered to your final destination. Well, if you're someone who loves to fly Southwest Airlines and dont mind being herded like cattle in exchange for cheap air fare, you'll love Icelandair.....except you'll pay $2,000 for the privilege. I'm astounded that a country that bases it's current economy almost totally on tourism could have such a disorganized, confusing, unfriendly and uninformed major airline, especially in terms of older passengers or the disabled. Booking a seat online was steeped with difficulties (and I fly fairly often and know the process), requiring 2 phone calls and still being unsure of the information. I actually upgraded my return trip to Saga class because I couldn't get a seat confirmed anywhere else on the plane, even after more phone calls. And note, you do not board or deplane at Keflavik into the airport - you must leave the plane via stairs onto the tarmac, board a bus , and then enter the airport. On return, even with very expensive Saga class, we went through a gate and had to walk at least 30 stairs to the place where the bus was waiting. I went back to the gate before climbing and was directed to a nearby elevator, but I saw 70 year olds lugging carryons up those stairs with great difficulty. So, now there is Wow Airlines, that may give them some competition, but either way, try to find as better way to visit tha his amazing country. read more

My go-to for air travel. I've flown with Icelandair a number of times (7+) since 2015, and it is by far the best option I've found for Seattle - Iceland - Europe/Middle East. Breaking up a 12hr+ flight with the 7hr Seattle- Reykjavik & then a 3-5 hr flight to elsewhere makes a huge difference for me, and the Reykjavik airport is rapidly expanding/a very nice stopover. I'm someone who can feel very anxious on planes, and Icelandair is the one airline I feel very solid flying. On a Icelandair flight a couple of years ago, the plane kept being sharply rerouted due to weather & you could tell some passengers were feeling a bit nervous, but the captain was quick to communicate with us in an unexpectedly transparent/friendly way. When it comes to navigating extremely cold weather/snow/etc, I choose Icelandair. Note : I do not check my luggage, but instead pack for overhead compartments only. I recently went to Iceland for a holiday but Icelandair made my stay there very hard to enjoy to say the least. First, they lost my bags which had all my belonging in there (warm clothes, sleeping bag, tent, and some food). I was one of 6/7 people from that SAME flight who lost our bags. I only say "lost" because they had no idea where it was or when it would arrive. This was a direct flight with no transfers. I was told to "keep checking" online for an update. I would like to think I am a reasonable and understanding individual but when you misplace that many bags in one flight it is a problem. Yes, it may be that there is a disconnect between where a passenger is flying out from however, that is Icelandair's problem and responsibility to figure out. They just seem to put the blame on everyone else. Apart from that, Icelandair's service throughout this event did not make it any easier. While I was at the airport I asked multiple staff members from Icelandair what the policy is for lost/delayed luggages. Nobody knew. One lady said I would have $100 within 24 hours and everything else I can "try" to claim but no promises. I then called the hotline and asked the same question only to get the same response. I asked about hotel compensation since my friends and I rented a car and were planning to camp. The response I got was, "That would not count because your hotel was not in your luggage". Actually, my tent and camping gear was in my luggage and that was my accommodations for the trip. Because of them, I slept in the car freezing for 2 nights. I finally received my luggage the day I was flying out. Thank you Icelandair for not ruining the rest of my holiday as I was continuing my trip to Switzerland. Finally, after 2 weeks of submitting my claim I get a response from them. They are willing to reimburse me for the 2 pieces of clothing I purchased while I was there. However they are not willing to refund me for the checked bags. I paid for a service that did not deliver. Also, I did not check in my bag the day I left even though I prepaid for it. I would never trust them with my bags and the gentleman at the airport said I could email you and get a refund. Clearly he was wrong. Icelandair is easily the worst airline I have ever dealt with. Forget compensation for the trouble they made me go through.... they are not even willing to pay me back for a service that did not deliver. Checking your bag in is very expensive with this airline and they only care about making money instead of great customer service. I will never fly with this airline again. read more

This airline is A Christmas Nightmare. Flew from ORD to LHR through KEF because it was a cheap flight to London for seven people in our family. I fly a lot (Concierge Key on American, Global Services on United). First time ever on Icelandair. Took a chance. We upgraded to Saga Class to get better service. They lost my luggage in KEF. Ok, sometimes that happens. They assured me at LHR in the morning that the bag was in KEF and would be delivered to our rental location in London that evening, December 23. I was given a reference number to track it, and left with reasonable confidence that I would hear later that day. Two days later it's Christmas Eve night; two nights with no clothes; no presents for the kids Christmas morning (they were in the luggage); no decent clothes to wear to church Christmas Day. I have been on the phone with Iceland Air ("it will be there tonight" -- nope); on customer service chat with Iceland Air ("the local baggage delivery service in London has it" -- no, they absolutely do not); twelve emails to various Iceland Air accounts, all unresponded to (these folks don't work during the holidays, even if your luggage is floating in the Atlantic somewhere between Reykjavik and London). Customer complaint chat line is shut down ("no agents available to chat"); of course not, it's Christmas and we're busy. I have no idea if my bag is coming, or where it is. I have lost bags before on major airlines (American, United, Delta, etc.) You fly a lot, it happens. ALL of them, however, know what a nightmare it is for you, and how important it is to get it to you asap, usually within hours. They tell you they have it, when it's coming, and when you will get it, and then they execute. Icelandair, however, has given me the complete runaround. Misinformation. Non-responsive. No communication. No delivery. This is what you pay for -- what the airline does when the trip doesn't go right. Major airlines are there for you. Icelandair is not there for you. You get what you pay for. I will not make this mistake again on this airline. read more

Icelandair is my absolute favorite airline to travel with. They are always organized, polite, on time, and the planes are clean and come with free Icelandic water, blankets and built in televisions (I recommend checking out some of the subtitled Icelandic fare). The landings have always been smooth which I appreciate. When there is turbulence they let you know right away. The food cart comes several times during a long flight and you can always get free coffee (much stronger than what we have in the US) and water. I browse their Saga Store catalogs but I haven't purchased much. I love stopping over in Iceland. That airport is tremendous. I don't recommend a long lay-over at the airport though (we once had one that was 8 hours overnight- eep) but for 1-2 hours it's great. Compared to other airlines no one can top this one. Definitely look into using them if you're going overseas. read more

Spending a great deal of time on airplanes and having to deal with a number of airlines most of which are horrible I am a terrible cynic when it comes to this industry. Yesterday I was bumped off my flight from London to Boston via Iceland due to over capacity on my flight. While most airlines will give you some crappy voucher which gives you the privilege of flying their lousy airline after bumping you or cancelling a flight; these guys re-booked me into business class on another airline getting me into Boston within 5 minutes of my original schedule. It was a very stressful flight. 1 hour to catch our connection while leaving an hour late. I was aware of the fact that they don't serve food, and I thought I would be alright, but this is actually kind of frustrating ... The first 45 min of the flight was extremely cold. Everybody had blankets except for my row. When I asked for one they just said that they didn't have enough. At one point I needed an attendant, I called and they took over 30 min to come (seat bell sign was off). And last, they lost my luggage, it has been 11 weeks since I am waiting for my refund and still nothing. I've flown on Iceland Air a few times and I would recommend them to anyone flying to Europe or perhaps elsewhere (only flew to Europe myself). The staff are friendly and nice (and I love listening to them speak Icelandic...(what an odd language)), their water is insanely good (I know that seems trivial and it is, but you haven't had good water until you've tasted Icelandic water), and most importantly - they're CHEAP! Sign up on their website for their numerous specials and deals. The planes are pretty standard...seating is ok (I always fly coach so I dunno about first-class), and the pilots seem skilled enough. Iceland air is a nightmare to work with and will do whatever they can to not take responsibility for their employees and contracted employees. If you need wheelchair assistance for anybody that is traveling with you, they will not take responsibility for the contracted employees that lead you to miss your flights. They will reply in disrespectful ways and have no desire to resolve any issues caused by them. We were also charged for an extra 2 bags out of Copenhagen, costing us over $200. The food was disgusting and incredibly expensive. I will never fly Iceland air again. read more

we flew this airline as a charter at the beginning of Feb from Boston to the dominican republic. Going down the hostess walked right by us without offering us a beverage and we were first class!! Get down their and we should have been off the plane first being first class but no they let everyone off at the same time! We paid for first class and were treated like outcasts. I have a very mixed review. My partner and I flew from Boston to Reykjavik in early August 2011. We splurged and paid for Saga Class. Saga Class is exceptional and better than the equivalents offered by domestic carriers. The flight to Iceland was probably free. The flight back to Boston was very troublesome. We got to the airport to check our bags and were told we were no longer sitting together and that we would be in different rows. We had booked seats next to each other and were then told that seat reservations are not guaranteed. They said everyone else had checked in already and there was nothing they could do - strange, considering we were four hours early. Later we find out that a married couple with the same last name checked in after us and were kept together, but my partner and I have different last names and have to wonder if they felt they could separate us and we wouldn't mind. Really? We didn't appreciate the at best, misinformation, that we were given and lack of apology. When you pay a premium for Saga Class, you expect better. Very disappointing. read more
