I was bitten by a tick several days ago and started showing some worrying symptoms that suggested I…read moremay have been exposed to Lyme disease. I have never been particularly thrilled with the doctors at Windsor Family Medicine because most of them would rather stare at their computer than look at you while they're treating you but haven't had a chance to look for a new physician that my insurance will accept. I met with Dr. Flanagan on Saturday morning and appreciated that he was willing to see me on such short notice. Because I use a service dog for Tourettes Syndrome that interferes with my breathing and swallowing I did tell him that I had the disorder. He looked at the tick bite on my neck, spent some time asking me questions and typing on his computer, then gave me a prescription for Doxycycline. I asked him if the pills he was prescribing were large and he said it depends on the brand but they probably aren't too big. A few hours later I went to the pharmacy and picked up two capsules that are far larger than anything I can swallow. I called the answering service and requested that Dr. Flanagan call me so I could discuss alternate options for taking the Doxycycline. When he called me back I explained the problem- his response? "You're 24 years old. I think it's time to grow up and learn to swallow pills." Never mind the fact that trouble swallowing pills is an incredibly common problem. If this doctor knew ANYTHING about the patients he is treating he would know that Tourettes is a relatively common disorder that causes involuntary movements and can make every day activities like swallowing pills extremely difficult. He automatically assumed that my inability to swallow pills was a mark of immaturity and not a side effect of my disability. As another user said- run, don't walk, away from this facility. Find a different doctor- ANY different doctor. While the nurses have always been kind and welcoming, the lack of sensitivity from every doctor I have had there and the fact that they don't seem to be particularly interested in actually treating you- rather they want to move you in and out as fast as possible- mean your money and time are best spent elsewhere.

Avoid Dr Kevin Flanagan at all costs. Today, I fired him as my doctor for he put my healthcare and…read morewell-being at risk. Now they are owned by Prohealth, their focus is on increasing revenue from patients regardless of the ability of their patients to afford it! I take prescription for high-blood pressure and he has refused to refill my prescription as discussed on my last visit. Run in the opposite direction...

I cannot urge you enough to avoid Dr. Grafals. I went to see her because I had postpartum…read moredepression and was having a bad reaction to the med my gyn had prescribed. I felt awful - emotionally and physically. She abruptly told me that if one SSRI didn't work for me, none would, and I'd have to go on stronger meds and wean my 3 month old baby. When I asked her if it was a good idea for a depressed mom to lose the only connection I could make to my child, she said it didn't really matter much whether I nursed or not, that she had chosen not to nurse, and that my son would be better off if we let him cry at night, weaned rapidly, and bottle-fed him. I was stunned. I couldn't believe that a doctor could be so ignorant and put her personal opinions about the "waste of time" breastfeeding was (her words, I'm not kidding). She wasn't kind or even understanding. She seemed amazed that I cared. I read the literature - I'm a professor, I'm used to reading professional journals - and I told her that there were many safe antidepressants for nursing moms, that nursing helped with the symptoms, etc. Here's what it comes down to: she didn't care in the least about me and what I was going through physically, she had no idea about research that was 10+ years old, and she gave me BAD and seriously HARMFUL medical advice - without any sort of knowledge of the meds she was going to prescribe. Run, do not walk away from this terrible doctor. I went to a psychiatrist even though I thought I didn't need to, and found out that different people respond to meds differently, that some SSRIs work when others don't, that nursing was key for my condition, and that my chronic insomnia (which Dr. Grafals had dismissed even before I was pregnant) was a key part of the issue. Don't see a GP for anything related to insomnia, anxiety, depression. Don't let them prescribe meds they know little about like Paxil and Ambien. I now have a GP who works wonderfully with other doctors as needed - knows what she knows, and doesn't hesitate to refer me to a specialist where needed. She never puts her personal opinion in the way of my care, and she listens to me. Grafals didn't even come close - but I'm grateful in a way. If she hadn't been so indifferent and uncaring to me, I never would have found a GP who was the complete opposite.

By far the worst experience with a doctors office. My father needs a certain diabetes medication…read morethat he has been on for years, his insurance said they would cover it if they received a prior authorization from the Dr. Silverman. Instead of contacting the insurance company to find out out the generic medicine they would cover, they left it to us to call. Leaving him with no refills left, his sugar levels are very high at this point that he has to pay out of pocket for the medication. We finally find out from the insurance company they can keep him on the same medication that he has been on for years, if they receive the prior authorization. However Dr. Silverman instead of doing that decides he should just go with generic medicine Which we have now come to find out it has not been controlling his sugar levels. We have asked her to send the prior authorization in order to file a claim for out of pocket expenses. However the office says she is too busy to call it in and will only accept a fax. I have asked for them to retrieve the fax from their Bloomfield office Which is the number Caremark has but to No avail. It has been two months now, they said they will only accept a fax to the South Windsor office, Which is not in Caremarks system. Just going in circles at this point, when all she needs to do is take one minute to call the prior authorization line. She has now put him on another medication that is not controlling his sugar levels, she just seems to be playing around with medications instead of putting him on the medication that has worked for years. Stay away from this place, horrible experience!
