I just had the loveliest experience at I Que BBQ! My boyfriend and I were first time customers here today. This place felt like home as soon as you walked in. We ordered the burnt ends, beef ribs, collard greens, and banana pudding. We just happened to be there while a kind older gentleman was celebrating, get this, his 102nd Birthday with his friends and family! How incredible. They were kind enough to invite us to a slice of his Birthday cake. We took our BBQ to go and it was oh so delicious. The ribs were tender and perfectly smoky. The collard greens were the best I've ever had, with succulent ham. And to top it all off, they gave us some cookies and a slice of funfetti cake with our order. I had been reading the reviews on I Que BBQ but always thought about trying it on the days they were closed. Only open 4 days a week. It's a small clean restaurant with plenty of parking. The people working were very friendly and helpful! Now on to the food. I ordered the Burnt Ends Meal which was a huge amount of tender flavorful brisket in their housemade sweet and spicy barbecue sauce. The meal comes with 2 sides and a roll. This was a huge meal which could easily be shared. Only thing I was a little disappointed about was the roll. I was hoping it was their homemade cornbread but by the time I unwrapped the foil and saw it was a plain roll, I was already pretty full. Cornbread is considered a side at I Que. I had a lot of leftover brisket to take home. I also got a hot link to go, delish and spicy!! A side note although I didn't try and are their seasonal desserts. This is our new go-to place in San Diego! The food, service, and vibes were all on point! We ordered the Mixed Meat combo and picked burnt ends (you may have to order this in person and not online btw!) and ribs with mac and cheese and beans as the sides. Both were so well seasoned that you don't even need the barbecue sauce they have, but boy is their sauce also fingerlicking good! For sides we got mac and cheese and beans. I have been to most winners of the SD Mac and Cheese Festival and this one blows all of the others away BY FAR. Perfectly creamy, well cooked noodles, cheesy spots, served hot, with spices clearly in them! Amazing! We got a second order of mac since we polished off the first so quickly. The meats were flawless but this was just so bomb we could not stop eating it!! It did not taste greasy or heavy which was a huge plus! The beans were so well done, right amount of flavor and not too watery of a sauce! Amazing and nice and hearty. The cornbread piece was HUGE! It was pretty good and was moist enough. Definitely more of a side since it wasn't too sweet than the dessert-like style that other places have. The pistachio cake blew us away! It was so light and fluffy and not too sweet. It goes down so easy since it's not a dense cake and it's so moist! A perfect end to a very savory meal! I saw so many desserts in the display I wanted to try, but we were so stuffed and had a little bit of leftovers. Ordered the brisket, pulled pork, SWAT burger, Mac n cheese, beans, collards, and can't forget the peach cobbler! Everything was beyond delicious, flavorful, and fresh! The collards and Mac n cheese was on point! Most of the time (for me) the customer service can make a whole experience! From the time you walk in the door, you are greeted with a smile through your whole experience at the restaurant! New OBSESSION. I DoorDashed this today and was super impressed with everything. I got the burnt ends sandwich, and their brisket was perfect with the rendered fatty bits I love and was craving. They sent lots of great sauces including this spicy mustard bbq sauce that blew my mind. Their Mac and cheese is delicious and seasoned so well, and their pistachio Bundt cake is super moist and very good. I like collard greens cooked down a little softer (think mush lol) than theirs were, but that's just a personal preference and flavor-wise, they were very good too. This is a fairly new BBQ joint located among half a dozen businesses in a La Mesa strip mall. I Que BBQ is only open on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 11 am to 7 pm. They have a large dining room, but it can't be currently used so everything is take-out. There was a table inside the front entrance where you can view the menu before placing an order with one of the workers. Though it's not abundantly clear, there were five types of meat... brisket, drummies (chicken), pulled pork, ribs (pork), and a beef hotlink. The Mixed Meats ($20) was my choice which consisted of two meats, two sides, and bread. My order was made up of brisket, drummies, baked beans, and collard greens. The brisket was leaner than I had expected so I liberally applied the mango habanero sauce that was provided on the side to moisten up the meat. The smoked chicken wings were slathered in a sweet BBQ sauce. These were perfectly prepared. For the sides, the baked beans were alright while the collard greens had bits of pork in them which imparted more flavor. Overall, I felt the offerings from this Atlanta-based pitmaster were solid. I've never visited this part of La Mesa before. When I eat in La Mesa I usually go to Anthony's. A new bbq joint named I Que Bbq brought me here. Pork ribs were dry rubbed and mesquite smoked. I loved the flavor which had a bit of sweetness. 2nd visit I tried the 2 item combo with brisket and wings. Brisket had a delicious bark and I loved the sauce glazed on top which had a nice sweet flavor with a little bit of tangy flavor. Wings were full of smoky flavor and sweetness from the delicious sauce. So far the ribs and wings are my favorite menu items. Love the mix of flavors from the smoking process, dry rub, and the sweet sauce. Staff was friendly and remembered me from my 1st visit. read more

This is a new BBQ Spot that recently opened right on the border of La Mesa and Spring Valley. The have gone from a catering business to a Brick and Motor. The eatery finds its roots in Atlanta, Georgia. I ordered the "Brisket Burnt Ends Sandwich" which came with a host of tender morsels of brisket ends, with some tasty BBQ sauce, Country Cole Slaw, on a yellow potato bun I believe it was. The sandwich also came with a bag of chips, I asked for the BBQ Chips, but they did not put them in my to-go bag. I was sad. The meal was $15. Perhaps a little on the high side, unless with was a combo meal. The sandwich was good. The brisket ends were very tender and tasty. I do wish they were warmer in the sandwich however. Also, I liked the bun they used but the need to toast it up in a hot griddle to help it keep it together during eating and so it offers that little bit of texture. It was served cold. Warm it up! The country coleslaw was very good. I liked the sauce and its flavor, and the crunchiness of the cabbage. I thought the sandwich could of benefited from some crispy pickles. Their brine and sourness would of plated well here, especially against the BBQ sauce: a sauce was very good. The place was empty on a Saturday midday. We ordered 2 of the 2 meats meals, we got brisket, pulled pork, burnt ends, and ribs bits. Nothing tasted good, the meat was chewy and rubbery, it either wasn't cooked long enough or the result of reheating. The Mac and cheese had an overpowering taste of garlic. The Cole slaw was probably a week old. $75 for bad BBQ. I feel bad because I don't like giving negative reviews but this place is overpriced for mediocre BBQ. Not going back. Very friendly staff, didn't wait long at all for our food. Wish there were a couple more options for BBQ sauce other than the classic and the spicy mustard bbq sauces, maybe a vinegar or classic spicy BBQ sauce could elevate things? So that's what I ordered along with Mac and cheese and fries. The brisket was inedible two bites in and the salt was overpowering. When I say over powering not even the bbq sauce could save it. The mac and cheese the noodles were over cooked and more like mashed and cheese. The best thing were the fries which were fresh and hot and served in a brown paper bag just like in the south. Update: So we are back again for the 3rd time this month ( don't judge me it's good). And service was impeccable ! I didn't get her name ( I know how rude of me) but she had a lovely short curly bob. She was so personable while being swift as well. She was easily handling the Sunday "line" and the church ladies. Everyone leaves happy while waving goodbye till next week. Soooo my aunt didn't want to switch her meal up. But she was having a fantastic meal on our Sunday drive. She could not have been more happy with her meal. In a word...AMAZING! Now let me explain. I'm a picky BBQ person. The sauce has to be good. By that I mean don't just be ordinary. The meat has to be good and the variety needs to be there. This place is amazing all around. Frankly, it's our new favorite BBQ in San Diego area...for that matter....the west coast for sure! Not to mention, the owners and entire staff are awesome and so friendly! We had the mixed meat combo plate. We opted for Burnt Ends and Pulled Pork. We chose our 2 sides and it came with 2 rolls. The sides were a hard choice because they let us try a few before deciding and we went with the baked beans and potato salad. Almost did the amazing mac n cheese. The baked beans are not your ordinary baked beans! They have a lil something extra and you can't stop eating them. The food came and the meats were cooked to perfection. Just enough char on the burnt ends and the pork was so tender! We were trying out some of the sauces. The house bbq is tangy and sweet which was stick to your ribs (pardon the pun) good! They also have a spicy mustard bbq that we loved also....even dipping the potato salad into it. There's a mango one too but I didn't try it today. The vibe inside is southern bbq which is all you need. Nothing fancy, but the table has plenty of paper towels, sauces and even hand sanitizer for when you get too sticky. Then we switched to dessert. We opted for the pistachio cake and the strawberry lemonade cake. But the list of desserts went on and on too, and I want to go back for the peach cobbler! Here's the thing, I've been in a funk lately... Wah, whoa is me, right? Agreed. For me, one of the side effects of being down is that I lose all motivation to cook, which absolutely pains me. I haven't used my Weber 22" kettle in months and we all should agree that a Thanksgiving bird cooked on a grill absolutely smokes (pun intended) a bird in the oven. Even knowing this, the effort to spend the time simply was not worth it for me this year. Enter, I Que BBQ. When I saw I Que BBQ was offering Thanksgiving packages I jumped all over it. A smoked turkey, yams, collard greens, mac and cheese, and dinner rolls fit the bill and I handled a few small tasks on my own. You know, things like stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes... I can handle that. Okay, so now this is when you ask, "how was it, Brad B?" And this is when I respond, "It was AWESOME!" The bird was juicy and not overly smoked or seasoned while the sides complimented each other perfectly. A bite of rich and cheesy mac and cheese followed by a bite of the sharp collard greens was absolutely perfect and there was not a clean plate in the house. A job well done by a small local business. Absolutely wonderful place. The food was fantastic. EVERYTHING my partner and I tried was flavorful, well made, hot and generously portioned. The space itself is clean, cute and well taken care of. Of the meats they offer - we had tried the pulled pork, chopped chicken, ribs tips and brisket. Every single one of them was great. My personal favorite was the rib tips. Of the sauces I tried the spicy mustard was the best. Not too sweet. That being said, we didn't eat a single bad thing. Their sides were also really good. We tried the collard greens, mac n cheese, baked beans and coleslaw. The best was the collard greens, hands down. The others were great but the greens were far and above superior.
