We were recently in Toronto for a week long documentary project, and shacked up in a remodeled Victorian about a block from Ossington and Dundas. I Deal Coffee (confession -- I just realized that there was a space between the I and the Deal) became a frequent morning walk destination, ending up with (usually) Liam making a cortado, a cold brew, and a flat white for my cinematographer / friend and I. I had two Americanos a breakfast sandwich with egg basil and tomato and a chocolate chip cookie. All were very good. The sandwich was very good although a bit saucy and messy. Watch out when you bite into it. Patio had about seating for 6 or 7 with social distancing but got uncomfortably crowded with up to 10 at times on a sunny warm mid November day. People not respecting my space turned me a bit off but that's not the cafe's fault. The Americanos are cheap but they are small. read more

This place has an amazing, quiet patio tucked off the main drag of Ossington. Contrary to many of the reviews on here, the service was good. The barista took the time to give me a recommendation on a good tea latte to order and he was friendly and patient with us as we decided what we wanted to order. I got a tea latte with rooibos tea. My friends got a latte and a matcha tea. The latte was well-made and had beautiful latte art. The tea latte was creamy and tasty. The matcha left a little something to be desired if you're used to top quality matcha -- maybe not whisked quite enough? We had brought some outside treats to eat with our hot drinks while a neighbouring table brought in mac and cheese from next door, and it didn't seem to be a problem. All in all, we all enjoyed our time here, I'd come back here to work on their patio and enjoy the free wifi. read more

Over the years, the ossington location has received more love and money to adorn the authentic vintagey space. The coffee is always good... I love the weekly rotation of blends from regions and the fact they share the info. So many cafes in Toronto have baristas that know nothing about coffee... I am glad ideal coffee has sogns describing their blends. May ic continue to grow. I love the locations in ossington, as well as kensington. First of all this place has actual matching furniture that is neatly placed in the shop. Plus you could actually SEE the stuff here whereas at the other location it was cramped and just overwhelming since it was full of stuff. This place is clean just how a coffeeshop should be and the outside is similar to that of Hoof Cafe - painted white and at a corner. And yes, when I mean opposite I mean opposite. Even my drink was great. Id have to say that this was one of my favorite mochas! It was not overwhelmed by the espresso, but it was strong enough where you could taste all the elements such as the smoothe milkiness of it. This is my favourite location of this tiny Toronto chain. Can we call three coffee shops a chain? I'm going to, but it certainly isn't a chain in the evil sense of the word. Lush patio with huge shading umbrellas. Decent music (if you're a Daft Punk fan, if you're not you might go crazy.) However, I had forgotten to ask for half amount of espresso that day. My iced latte was really strong for me. So I went to the Batista and asked for more milk for my drink. The Batista didn't ask me about my satisfaction of the drink. Instead it was assuming me trying to make advantage of the cafe by asking more milk. "You paid the amount of the milk in your drink so why are you asking me for more milk?" Said the barista in a rude way. I was first in shock and thinking in my mind that I actually don't mind paying extra because I know all store are going through difficult time. But the way he responded my request was way too rude so I walked away. I felt so embarrassed in front of my friends coz I really liked their latte and was actually saying a lot of good words of this cafe to my friends. I rarely go into coffee places, mostly when I need a quiet place to work or craving something to combat the sleadily cooling weather. This place fulfills all my requirements: quiet patrons, soft background music, relaxed vibe and a hot drink. The space is long and narrow with plenty of seats and counter spaces. I found the perfect spot by a large open window overlooking a darling little garden. My only disappointment was that my drink was not hot enough (I like my hot drinks scalding hot) even when freshly made. I tried ordering a mocha, was told in a monotone voice that they ran out of chocolate milk and just stood there staring at us. So I ended up ordering a matcha latte, I found she added too much milk and there was still matcha powder at the bottom. As I was trolling the alleys for some cool art, I found myself walking down Ossington. I took the opportunity to finally try this coffee joint. It was comfortable from the moment I walked inside. (I discovered a bit later that there are two doors to enter from. I entered from Ossington not the side street). I had always thought because the exterior was stark white and unassuming that the interior would be, too! Completely wrong! They should makeover the outside because there are weirdos like me that might just pass it buy for its cold white shell. But I was determined to give it a whirl and was extremely happy I did. A pleasant barista welcomed and made me my order. It was an incredibly smooth americano with subtle undertones and no bitterness at the finish. I savored my drink as I read a book from my snazzy ebook reader. Mmmmmm.....a fabulous read with my incredibly warm and satisfying companion, Americano. The only points off I would give, is for the bathroom. That's all I will say about that one. I plan on going back and buying some of their beans so I can have some of that warm loving from my americano in the comfort of my own home. We need the privacy. LOL read more

Initially I was planning to skip this spot altogether due to the poor experience I had at the other branch of this place. A fellow Yelper who happens to be a coffee aficionado suggested I try it nonetheless. Unfortunately this spot didn't fare much better than the monstrosity in the name of espresso drink that gets served at the other spot. Setup admittedly is much better than other location. I ordered my Cappuccino with a sweetener and they didn't have any. Its OK I skipped my sweetener I got my drink for here. The drink was served in a crappy mug the drink had no crema to speak off and the milk was frothed poorly. She was physically like flailing her arms at me with a candle lighter & menu like I was some kind of pigeon that landed on their table. I couldn't help but laugh at her behavior. I explained to her that while I have other food, I'm waiting on my partner who is INSIDE BUYING FOOD FROM THEIR COFFEE SHOP. She repeated herself & flailed around again. The funniest thing besides her doing her best wacky inflatable tube man impression was all the tables outside were empty. They had no customers & she was still trying to get rid of us! Anyway, really confused why they have an understanding with the shop next door to share seats because they do not honor it in any way. I Deal Coffee is a small chain of coffee places with locations in Toronto and Ottawa. They offer soy and almond milk, so drinks can be vegan-ized. The space has many stairs and therefore is not accessible. I BELIEVE bathrooms are gendered but I can't remember off the top of my head. The big highlight for me of this place is the wonderful outdoor seating next to the Mac and Cheese place. My friend and I went for a coffee and it was GLORIOUS to be able to sit out in the sun. The coffee itself is delicious and great for people who are really into coffee. They also prepare their own beans in house, which is a nice touch. This is one of the better places in Toronto to sit outside and drink a coffee when it's nice out. read more

The Barista was dressed/styled so he reminded me of the Movie "Grease" because of the slick Hairstyle. Also gave me the feeling I went back in time like "Back to the Future" where Michael J Fox goes back to see his Parents in the 1950s. Not my scene, not my decade but those Movies did provide enjoyable entertainment although they were made in the 1980s. The Cappuccino was served in what seems to be a Cup stolen from someones Grandmother. I felt so out of whack I wish I asked for either Tea or Americano so I can be in-sync to the general environment. Apparently Grandma lost her Tea set because my Friend's Cappuccino Cup was different size and pattern than mine. The TRUTH is I felt a bit awkward in here and wanted to dash out to the DeLorean. Cappuccino was made the authentic Foamy non-Latte Art style. Much like the Kensington locale, their Espresso shot is much too bold and deep for my preference. The 2 stops I spent the least amount of time at during the whole indie coffee passport period was at the two "I deal coffee" locations. While this location is miles ahead of the Kensington Market location I still found it to be too small and crowded with random seating arrangements. Sure the drink was not bad by any means but it did not do anything special for me. I'm also not a fan of the menu location as it is directly behind you when you are ordering a drink. Staff was friendly, drink was good but there are a lot better options in the area if you want to actually go in and take some time off to enjoy your drink. I give it three stars because I enjoyed my drink and it is a good enough location if you want your coffee to go. read more

So, it seems people are starting to learn how to make good coffee. I like when I ask a barista for an espresso ristretto and he or she doesn't look at me like "what?". At Ideal the barista just made me a very short dark and great shot of espresso. Their espresso blend is very good indeed. Not the best I've tried, but very good. I've been there a bunch of times because it's beside YogaSpace. Now... WHY DO PEOPLE THINK TRENDY COFFEE PLACES HAVE TO LOOK LIKE HELL? Really. It's hot, it's ugly, and the bathroom is run by Cerberus himself. I don't feel attracted by a place like this. I like to feel somewhat pampered when I pay for food, otherwise I could do it at home - I can have great brazilian coffee delivered at my bed every morning thanks to my beloved husband & personal barista, so when I PAY for espressos, I expect to feel loved by my coffee shop. Terrible service and mediocre-at-best product. Came in here with a friend because they were exhausted from walking around the area and needed to sit down and have a drink. The barista was completely unwilling to answer simple questions ("What's in this pastry?" "What iced drinks do you have?") and it really felt like they didn't want me there. Even at soulless corporate places like Starbucks, I have never had trouble getting answers to questions I have about the product. It sucks that a local business treats people with such disdain and acts like it doesn't matter if you support them. I like there's tons of light, big potted plants, and a wall covered with old wall paper. It's clean, minimal, inviting and comfortable. It's a narrow space and if you can't find a table, there are benches and window seats available; each of the four walls are used to their fullest potential. If it's summertime, sit outside on the benches - it's the best patio on Ossington. My only complaint is the bathroom. While they're clean and tidy, why aren't there hooks? This seems to be a Toronto phenomena that hooks are non-existent in bathrooms. The last thing I want to do is put my heavy coat and jacket on the floor, just saying. read more

I know iDeal coffee from when I use to live in Kensington Market. It was a great local hangout though I'm not a huge fan of their espresso. Decided to check out their location on Ossington. I have to say the espresso here tasted much better than what I have had previously from this roaster. This is a nice location, formerly a laundromat the conversion to cafe went well and I find the atmosphere to be low key and comfortable. Bonus points for Hard Bop Jazz on the sound system. The service was good, the barista competent and friendly. Though I still have had better espresso at other cafe's, again I was quite happy with the shot I got here. Word is that they will be expanding to more regular coffee roasts in the future so it's worth checking out to see what they have on offer. 31/2 stars. read more

I'm not a huge coffee junkie, but we sat down here to get some work done. Seating is pretty limited, as are most places downtown, but it's a comfortable and peaceful environment to work in. The barista and cashier really knew their coffee. They sell a variety of beans so I'm pretty happy they know their stuff; very helpful with our coffee questions. Coffee is kinda bitter, but it is in general so I don't know what to say. The hot chocolate kind of tastes like microwaved nesquik, which isn't terrible but it's not the most appealing taste. They offer a variety of pastries which look delicious. Environment is like your regular coffee shop; peaceful, light chatter, bright. They have outlets scattered along all the seating except the bar tables by the front door. It only ever gets kinda loud when they're grinding some beans to make more coffee, but I think that's kinda expected. All in all, it's a nice spot to chill. I mean, I'm sitting here writing my review instead of studying so I think it's pretty decent. read more

Not a bad thing, just not a great thing either. And sometimes dirty (or not) but uninspired, perhaps bad service, overpriced and the place seems like an afterthought, or ironically, too much thought/forced, which can make you wonder: "What where they thinking?" (Aka: Monarch Expresso Bar) I Deal Coffee falls squarely in the middle. It is smallish, narrow, not many tables and although mostly clean AND painted white (for those hipsters or Mac lovers out there) there is not much to make it memorable or stand out from others cafes other than "Hey, that's the cafe on the Ossington stretch with white walls, the one at the corner!" Coffee is average... BUT THEY HAVE A BLACKBOARD! WHERE THEY WRITE STUFF! How unique and different is that? Meh. I have mostly been there because I needed coffee and it was open... and you know, it's painted white. Meh. Would I come here outside a dire need for a joe shot or using the Indie Passport? Probably no. The reason I am unimpressed is because I cannot shake the feeling they are trying a bit too hard, albeit that is highly subjective. read more

It's a great place to go if you're waiting for laundry up the street -- go sit down on a comfy chair and get a hot beverage to fill you with warmth. I love their mismatched mugs and the knit cozies they put on glasses of tea. Coffee and tea is cheap and delicious. It'll set you back around $2 a cup, and they have a bunch of unique teas in everything from Earl Grey to Apple Cinnamon. Yum. I'm a huge Kensigton Market I Deal fan, and this one is missing all the right elements: the coffee (I Deal Kensington hands down best coffee in the city) is not even close to good, even though they use the same beans and machine... the love is missing the music is way too loud and awful, it is overbearing and discussion with friends are barely possible, they are playing melancholic singer songwriter and whaling guitar - why, oh why? we've asked to turn it down and the barista almost got mad at us. we're he to support you, so show us some love will ya. the service is sour like milk gone bad, no smiles, no hello, it's not personal the walls are bare and the few pieces hanging would not be considered as art in my books. The lattes are on par with the other indie cafes but the cafe seating is a bit awkward. There are seats lined up facing the barista bar without tables which besides the two single seated sofas that are angled toward each other look out of place. I guess I'm not too keen on the park bench seating indoors. There are 3 tables that seat four each and a couple of bar stools by the window but they're taken up quickly by people who want a table for their laptop, drinks, books, magazines etc. To be honest, with Crafted just a few doors down, I'd opt for that place instead - it has a much better atmosphere. read more
