I saw a sign saying Hy-Vee was voted one of these best Chinese food places. Nope, it was awful. Noodles were over-cooked and gummy. Although the peppers were bright with the pork, it was all smothered in a disgusting, flavorless gravy. And the pork had an old taste to it. The chicken and broccoli...the chicken was in tiny pieces, I thought it was egg at first. Again, flavorless. Never never again. It's largely uneaten and in the trash, wouldn't give it to a dog. read more

Honestly, I only shop here where there's a special sale of some kind but when I do, I've been overall quite pleased with my experience. The store is clean with plenty of variety, including a decent health and organic department. I appreciate the one-stop-shop concept of this grocer, offering an in-house restaurant and coffee shop, catering, fresh takeout meals, huge deli, bakery, food tastings, pharmacy, dietician services, and more. Unlike other markets, the Hy-Vee staff seem more readily available and friendlier which is nice. Although their regular prices can't compete with Woodman's or Aldi, they have a clean, spacious layout with plenty of services and products. I recommend stopping in when they have a special sale and checking out their pizza and other meal options. read more

Grocery store is nice. Having said that the sit down restaurant service is horrible for food that really isn't any different then what i can make at home. read more

Be patient. Massive store with muppets working the register. 3rd week stopping in, 3rd week dealing with incompetence on the registers. This is a huge store and you could stock up on every grocery and household good you could imagine. You could also eat in their restaurant, at their hotbar, salad bar, deli, etc. They have decent prices on a few things and on Wednesday you save 15% in their "health market". The health market is the tiny section, all the way to the right. I'll come back because they have a few things I can't get at some other stores but it won't be my go to store, mostly because I have yet to have an easy, positive experience checking out? Dumb luck or is it a pattern? read more

So I've begun to shop at HyVee more and more often lately. I usually visit the east side store in Madison and I'm always pleased with my experience. My cousins are west siders and they rave about the west side HyVee, so I checked it out today. First thing, the music is waaaay too loud and obnoxious. I mean seriously! It smacks you in the face when you walk in. It was very distracting while I was trying to check out the store. The layout, prices and most everything seems very similar to the east side store. The free wifi would not connect, however. One thing many people have remarked on is the great buffet and dining area food available to eat in-store. I strolled by to see what the offerings were, and there are definitely a lot of them. I'll come back when I have time to have a meal. Meanwhile, they were offering samples of three different types of chicken. I grabbed a toothpick with a piece of sesame chicken, and instantly regretted it. It was a cold rubbery Chicken McNugget that tasted like it had been dipped in sugar syrup. It was coated in sesame seeds, but I could not taste them. I literally had to find a place to spit it out. The highlight of this visit was a lovely lady named Charly who was my cashier. I asked her about the fuel rewards program, and she went into so much detail and gave me so many good tips for how to maximize the gas discounts for my purchases. I am always so impressed by the cashiers at the east side HyVee, and now I see that west side is great, too. Four stars, but turn down the music and I'll make it five. :-) read more

Wow, what a great grocery store! Staff members are SUPER friendly and helpful. Bright, spacious, nice displays, great prepared foods section, meat/seafood counters, and bakery. Went in on a Friday evening and the parking lot was busy, but I never felt like the store itself was busy inside. They were giving out tons of samples and they were sampling/selling smoked ribs that an employee smoked on the smoker outside the store. Wow, those ribs beat most that are sold at local BBQ joints! They don't have the selection that you'd find at Woodman's and prices (on some things) are a little higher, but the cost is worth the calm, pleasurable experience. read more

This place bridges the gap between Costco and Metcalfs for people who want nice things but can't afford them. More importantly, they have one of the best alcohol selections in town-- their bourbon selection is as good if not better than Steve's, and theyve got a ton of local and regional beers. Good stuff. read more

Shopping at Hy-Vee is a bit of an experience. It is such a huge store with so many different things to offer that it really has something for everyone. I don't do my grocery shopping here but I am completely addicted to their Chinese food. It is a great value and is usually pretty fresh. They also have a great liquor section that could really be its own little store. The service here is also really great! Everyone that I have interacted with has been very pleasant. I have also been to their Sunday brunch a few times. I seriously think that it is one of the best values in town. It is $15 and you have access to their entire hot bar. This means that you can have bbq, chinese, american, Italian, salad bar, and whatever else they have. I have actually come here simply for this and have not been disappointed! It is obvious that Hy-Vee puts a lot of effort into ensuring that the customers have a great experience at this location. read more

I've been a Copp's and Woodman's kind of guy since moving to Middleton in December 2011. So when I was told about the new Hy-Vee opening on Whitney Way I was excited for something new.. I made a plan to stop about a week after they opened as I didn't want to deal with the crowds. It was still crazy busy for a Tuesday. I decided to have lunch since I hadn't ate yet. I vouched for the Chinese buffet for $6.99. It was just okay. I've grown too picky for Chinese anymore so to me good Chinese is at a real restaurant. The lounge area was very nice and modern. I'd like to go back and have a beer and try the wings. This is a very new concept to me and I have to say I'm interested to see how the whole restaurant in a grocery store works. I know Hy-Vee will do good here. I didn't buy any groceries, I did look at produce and it looked very good and fresh. It's worth checking out if your looking for an alternative to Copp's. read more

I love Hyvee, I will probably always shop there for my groceries. However the grille/buffet at this location was pretty lacking... Service was meh, and I ended up getting the Chinese food which had a funky taste. Maybe it was just that day but it was offputting. However the actual grocery store is great as always. Love the spirits and wine section and the employees outside of the buffet are always friendly. read more

How could you not love coming here? The food is great (for a buffet). Always well stocked, piping hot, clearly freshly made. It is a bit weird to eat lunch in a grocery store, but there's so many options! AND - you can get some errands done at the same time! How convenient! read more

Posted price VS scanned price issue. Posted price didn't match the scanned price. Manager said too bad, customer had to take product at the scanned price as it must have been in the wrong place. Customer touched it therefore they must purchase the product at the scanned price because, covid. Right. See WI statute 98.08. read more

This place has amazing food from the deli, the sushi bar, etc. The foods rotate basically everyday, so there's always something new to try. There's a nice sitting room where you can eat and hook up to the wifi and work. Other than the fresh food though, the variety of "grocery store food" is splendid as well. They have a nice gluten free section, a meat section, a bakery section, etc. Much better than Walmart, and about the same price. read more

The worst grocery store. If I didn't live right next to it, I would never go there again. Waited for 20+ minutes in line for one of two open registers just for the clerk to say her lane was closed as I was up next and there were 5+ people in the other line. Extremely poor service. read more

High-priced items (items often 20% to 60% more than competition). Also, I went on a Sunday and the very loud and always-on packer game and Radio advertisements were intolerable. I spent the entire time trying to get out as quickly as possible due to the radio noise. If you go to Hy-Ver, bring extra money and earplugs. read more

I LOVE HYVEEEEE it's the best. They've got great deals on their own Hyvee brand products and always have everything I need. They're health mart area is awesome too. Big booze area. Open 24 hours. Hyvee wins. read more

This grocery store is pretty awesome. If you're from Texas, it's pretty similar to HEB Plus. It's got a hot food bar, an amazing meat section/deli, a great bulk food section, fresh produce, a bakery, samples (!!!!!!), a salsa/hummus bar, and it's super clean and new. They also have a decent selection of "ethnic" foods and ingredients. I always end up making too many impulse purchases thanks to their generous samples. read more

Gonna give the Westside Hyvee a 3 1/2 star but rounding up because the food quality is pretty good and their staff is friendly but there are always long lines and the Starbucks is not very friendly and often slow. I enjoy their Chinese food station however there are some inconsistencies with some of their dishes every time ago. However, the staff is always nice. Their produce is fresh and I like how they have a lot of pre-made, marinated meats. The seafood is also always fresh and the staff nice and helpful. The lines are always long though and they never have enough open. There is always a manager helping direct customers but I'm always moved and then the line I was in was actually faster. They also rarely have baggers on their lanes either or it is someone super slow. I wish they also had self check out. It might make lines go smoother. The cashiers are always nice though, especially a couple of the ladies that always work the express lanes. My experience at the Starbucks in Hyvee is always kinda ehhh. One time they had no coffee brewed in the morning, maybe they ran out but they guy said it wouldn't be long but it was long. And then he gave a pretty blonde girl a coupon for having to wait but what about this pretty dark haired girl over here? I had to wait too, remember me? Then when the coffee was ready they filled up someone's reusable cup who had just ordered. Needless to say I was late for work. I've also had an experience where there was only one person working, taking orders and making drinks. I felt bad for the guy but I ordered brewed coffee and then he took like 3 more orders and then started making a frappuccino and making espresso drinks?? I get he wanted to go in order but get people their brewed coffee quick and move on, its common sense. Now this might not be a Hyvee problem but they are located inside and there was no option to just yelp Starbucks. read more

We have been here three times and each time we have been disappointed. The bakery lost our order for buns for a party; on the day of the event, they did not have the buns we ordered. The checker short-changed me $10 on my cash back. The baggers seem clueless about how to bag groceries appropriately; when I asked for a change, they still didn't seem to know how to bag so that the bags were not too heavy, did not have heavy items lying on top of softer produce, and did not have items falling out of the top of the bag. It appears that the problem is lack of training of employees at this new store. read more

This is an amazing store. Such friendly staff members, Jose in liquor and Alicia E. Always quick to ask if assistance is needed finding something. Thank you for always being there! read more

I have been to the new West-side Madison Hy-Vee about 3 times since it opened. The first couple of times I only bought small things. Today I did a bigger shopping trip. I love this store. It has a wonderful selection and plenty of staff to keep the customers happy. It is newly opened so it will be interesting to see if the level of service changes. As long as the selection and service stay top notch I will be back. Highlights for me were the selection of organic local produce, health food section, and store brand selection. read more

If anyone is looking for someone to create a masterpiece for your child, choose Hy-vee! I was a bit skeptical at first, you know grocery store cake... but when it came to the day of pick up, I was blown outta my mind. The decorator took her precious time in creating our son's masterpiece even amongst graduation season. She was really pleasant to work with. We had a Pinterest picture printed out for her to re create, but she asked if she can put her own spin to it: I'm glad we said yes. A cake under 200.00? I'll take that. Cake was very yummy. Definitely will be coming back for his 2nd cake! read more

Hy-Vee - Grocery Near Me - Madison, Wisconsin

Hy-Vee is not my go to grocery store, but I do go about once a month. I stopped by under the allure of getting a hot lunch and office snacks in one trip. The location is clean, well kept, busy and things are easy to find. I did a quick walk through the hot food, salad bar, bakery area on my way to get office snacks. I found the snacks (coffee creamer, crackers, peanut butter type stuff) I wanted easily, and got a few impulse buys. Everything was reasonably priced. I then doubled back to get my lunch. I perused the selection and decided to get the Chinese 2 Entree Combo. The woman who helped me was kind, but possibly hard of hearing. I pointed to my first entree selection (Jalapeno Chicken) and she put it on my plate and commented that is was delicious but very spicy, next I pointed to and asked for the Pepper Beef. She nodded and gave me the chicken dish next to it, I saw her dip the spoon and tried to stop her but it was already on my plate. Sigh. Fine, I can eat chicken. I pointed to and asked for an egg roll for my appetizer and she gave me crab rangoon, which I definitely didn't want so I said something. She said it was already on my plate, and they were delicious and stuck the price sticker on my plate and said goodbye. The food itself was warm, fragrant and very delicious. Even the unwanted chicken and crab rangoon. I will be going back to try more hot foods. I decided I needed a dessert, and checked out the bakery. I impulse bought the 7-Layer brownies and the caramel pecan bread. Both turned out to be bad ideas. The brownies ended up being terribly stale and hard. Someone just put old, hard brownies in box and threw them on the shelf. The caramel pecan was a dentist's dream come true! The caramel part was so hard it was painful to eat. Not the firm, sticky good kind of delicious treat. It was a so hard you could crack a tooth or at best pull out a filling. Almost inedible. I ended up throwing both out. If you are going to buy bakery items I suggest asking them how fresh they are or even trying to apply pressure to see how hard or soft the item is. I did not have my Fuel Saver card and asked the cashier to look it up. I know the card is tied to my phone number, as other cashiers have looked it up that way, but she said it wasn't. I will still shop here, but this was an all around bad experience. read more

My comment is just about two Chinese meals , which were cooked in their kitchen and were pre-packaged on the shelf for take home. I have had their Chinese where you select your entrees "live" at the counter and they are just fine. But from the shelf They were horrible and I had to throw them each out ! One was beef and it was all gristle. The other was chicken which was also poor quality. I shop here a lot and think their market grill is super. I am not a picky eater and have never had to throw a purchase out before. I would not buy their Chinese pre-packaged entrees. read more

Good food and clean. Service is spotty

Not a good experience with the " Bakery". I ordered a cake three weeks in advance and provided all the necessary information while placing an order, took a week to get an price estimate of my customized cake. When I went to pay up they could not find my order, gave them my cell number and left. Got a call from a parson and after a day went there to pay for my order and guess what could not find my order, after 15 minutes they were able to find my order. Cake delivered on time but it was poorly done. Did not like cake, poor job even after paying $20 extra for fondant. read more

It would be nice if the health market weren't so claustrophobic and had a better selection. Checkout experience is a mess, but hopefully with time, the employees will learn better practices. That doesn't explain giving only 2 stars, though. Biggest concern? Safe food practices. While at the bakery, someone was stocking plastic clamshell packages of cinnamon rolls. A couple fell off the stack and broke open. The didn't spill out on the floor, but were jostled in the package. The employee rearranged them up with his bare hands, put them back in the container and placed them with the others for sale. I also found a dark black hair in one of my deli salads (no one in my family has dark hair) I was hoping for something closers to a Wegmans, and it could have been a great store. But the two questionable experiences kind of ruined the experience! read more

Pros: Decent clean cafe with friendly service for cheap eats. Great place to bring the family so each can choose their own type of food for dinner. Store is clean. Not too crowded. Lovely selection of prepare sandwiches and salads with both average and upscale choices. The produce is better looking than most grocers in Madison with reasonable prices. The staff is polite. Cons: Register problems - one evening I had to go to three different lanes. Natural food selection is quite small. Generally priced the same as Whole Foods, but then doesn't offer case discounts. read more

Only reviewing this for the awesome customer service I received in the bakery department. I made an online cake order and called the store to confirm they received it and everything was on track for pick up. I would definitely order a cake from here again just because of the service she provided and the cake was delicious! read more

Returns can be a hassle! Attempted to make a return at the Fitchburg store and was told the pots and pans are not in the system, even though they're Hy-vee branded. Thus, I would have to return the pots to the Madison West store, where I bought them. This is a huge hassle and only foresee this issue being more pervasive for others with the holidays. Stores operate 'independently,' thus certain items are exclusive to that store, even though they're branded with the Hy-Vee logo. read more

We absolutely LOOOVE HyVee! We get Chinese food from their buffet at least once a week for a cheap and easy meal. :) I've also cooked their salmon several times, and it's always a hit. Please bring back the cedar wrapped salmon with asparagus, we loved those!! My only critique to offer is to please train your baggers to keep cold and hot foods separate. We have had to re-arrange our own bags almost every time after we check out, or remind them during bagging. read more

I dig this grocery store. They carry a wide variety of products, both brand name and local stuff. More importantly than the items they're selling, this Hy-Vee delivers a customer experience second to no one else in the area. They're not perfect, they make mistakes, but they stop at nothing to take care of the customer and make things right. I can't imagine shopping for my groceries anywhere else. read more

I have been going to Hyvee since Copps closed. I have no problems with the people working there, they are all nice. The big thing is checking out. They might have two registers open with many people in line. They are slow to react to this problem in getting more cashiers up front. A cashier manager should be keeping a close eye on this. They don't. read more

Tried the hyvee buffet today This a somewhat unusual setup in that you get to have all the food items displayed for sale, you walk down the display cases and ask for what you want ... The quality of the food was very good The service of the wait staff, was very lousy, given the unique setup they had the waitress did not explain how it all works, we had to ask the servers on the food line to figure it out; We also had to go find someone a couple if times to take empty plates off our table, the coffee Pot was empty and had to wait 20 minutes before I could get any ... I liked the food but really did not like their setup, you feel like you are made to ask for food in a grocery food line ... The price was $12 for adults and $6 for kids, relative to my review here, it should be less... All in all, worth trying but unlikely I will repeat, at least not in the near future. read more
