    Slider bar
    Heidi S.

I had an event and needed good food that was convenient. Hy-Vee is always our go to for catering and they never disappoint. I ordered the slider bar , $13 a person and they count 3 sliders per person so you don't need to order for the exact number of guests. You can choose 3 different meats, two sides and it comes with all the toppings. They do deliver but I opted to pick it up and they were so helpful when I did. If you want good food and convenient this should be your first call. You can also select from many catering options on their website.

    a box of decorated cookies

I love shopping at Hy-Vee typically - however, I ordered I decorated sugar cookies for an employee appreciation event at my community. They came decorated (beautifully, but not what I needed). When I called to get them redone, Emily was rude and condescending essentially just deflected blame onto "whoever ordered" aka me instead of apologizing for the inconvenience. I offered to bring them back & complimented but she instead was once again rude. She said we ordered sugar cookies w no jimmies. Upon arrival, she rolled her eyes didn't say much at first, then once again blamed the way I ordered it, switching the narrative saying I ordered jimmies. Emily in the bakery was recommended by one of our staff & I wish I could've had the same experience.

My wife's 60th birthday cake good job tasted great and thanks to the Store Manager for getting it right !

Thanks to the Store Manager Aaron and the cake decorator for doing such a great job for my wife's 60th Birthday Cake.

Hyvee is our favorite cake and cupcake bakery. We have used Hyvee for birthdays and celebrations personally and for work events. Their cake artist (Kim) will help you come up with the perfect design. Most recently we ordered 4 different cupcakes for my daughters 14th birthday, they will arrange the cupcakes into what appears to be a cake. Hyvee gives a personal touch to any of your needs. Give their bakery a shot for your next event!

How it looks when you buy it

I bought a sushi poke bowl. This one was a large size. When the package was sealed, all you could see on top of cucumbers, avocado, sashimi with sauce, and a little dab of seaweed in the middle. Presumably, there is rice underneath since it's a poke bowl. When I sat down to eat it, turns out there was a whole mass of head lettuce hidden underneath. Like there was more lettuce than anything else. it's not a war crime or anything, but it made me mad all the same.

Clueless deli dude gave me way more food than I probably should have gotten for the order of 1/2 lb of meat and two 4oz sides.

Overall, I like this Hy-Vee. It's not my go-to for groceries, but there are definitely some highlights that are worth an occasional trip. PROS + Fresh produce with fun items I don't see at other stores + Some very delicious bakery items (cupcakes in the case, turtle brownies when they're made with a brownie base instead of cake, red velvet mini layer cake, and an amazing brownie I can't remember the name of that used to be in the deli case but haven't seen in years) + Clean, bright, and kept up - it's been open a few years now and it still looks new + Great sales + A wide array of deli items & prepared foods NEUTRAL +/- No self-check lanes CONS - Their house brand can be pretty terrible quality - Items that aren't on sale seem to be pricier than average - Parking lot is kind of wonky - On a recent trip no one in the bakery knew how to properly ring up the cupcakes I bought - I was overcharged by $1 but decided my time was worth more than waiting around and involving a third person The combo of higher prices + generic items I don't care for keeps me from doing my regular shopping here, but it's worth shopping the sales and exploring their large fresh foods area.

2 stars for the seafood counter. 2 stars for the dining area auto server/waiter staffing (see below for why) 5 stars for the location 0 stars that my initial posting and review got quashed because someone else created this listing and more folks kept checking in so this became the official one. And yes, I was there on opening day making this new add. Seafood: my brother pointed out a stark difference in age, texture and usefulness in the catfish and 16/20 shrimp that I bought from this location. 1) The catfish was fatty and old. It should have been refused at the distributor level. 2) The shrimp had been thawed and refrozen several times and HE WAS SHOCKED That I let them give this to me at the counter. Well the shrimp were limp not fresh and tender. The shrimp were dingy and not the colorful as they should have been. They shrimp were clearly frozen multiple times after being thawed which was overwhelming because I was ready for dinner. Needless to say, I returned them. 5 stars on how the service was handled. It went over very well. Dining area - my sorority sister complained about it but i dismissed her. Well, the same Tuesday I bought from the meat counter. I got a call and needed to send out some work so I can to the dining area to get the emails off from my laptop. I felt guilty and bad for not dining because the servers count on any seat taken to make income. The young man was mannerable, attentive and understanding. I tipped. Yep! I felt the need to do so as I've waited tables before but the more I thought about it - why is the eastside is seat and serve yourself but the westside is "let's be fancy' and we must serve you. At opening I thought this was cool but through practical use - I feel it's a bit much. And comes as classicist when you know good ole' Madison. Location = perfecto. The build out, decor, aesthetics are all working. In and out location replacing part of the old strip mall. Great! Not far from Hilldale as well. So all things considered - beware when you go to the seafood counter. Yes, I'm from Louisiana and I'm not that kind of picking when I'm this far from water to get fresh shellfish BUT at the same cost per pound as Whole Foods - I expect more. I mean really $13/lb is a special price not the regular price so the quality should keep up with the pricing. Today, they're running that $13/lb special pricing again with the tag "Responsible Choice" which can lure one in but heed the warning and look elsewhere.

My triple-decker (ham, turkey, and bacon). Fresh, fast and yummy!

Update--Hy-Vee is still offering fuel saver purchase points for gas discounts at PDQ. With the recent dip in gasoline prices and fuel saver points accumulated in the last 30 days, my wife paid $.58 per gallon at the pump today. Filled up the family SUV for less than $10. ---- Update - - they also make fresh deli sandwiches there during the lunch hour. They have a wide variety of breads and styles, including toasted paninis. I had the triple-decker which is ham, turkey, bacon on whole wheat with all the trimmings. $5 and fresh! So good. Great value.

A Bar! At Hy-Vee! With TVs and Spotted Cow!
    Daniel N.

OMG YES! I've always been a fan of Hy-Vee but seriously the Hy-Vee's I've been going to are nothing compared to this Hy-Vee! THERE IS A BAR IN THE RESTAURANT. Yes a BAR. And they serve Spotted Cow! But they were out when I went there but still, A BAR WITH SPOTTED COW! Ok can you tell I am not from here? Because they probably sell Spotted Cow everywhere but when I can come up from Chicago ad hit up Hy-Vee, I can now get a Spotted Cow! Oh they also have TVs in the restaurant. Seriously I'd never leave this area had I been going to school here. Grand Buffet + Bar + TVs + Internet Access + Electrical Outlets at every table + Single room bathroom (multiple single room bathrooms) = My second home had I lived here. Madison, you really scored big with this new Hy-Vee. I mean I just popped in to charge my phone and figured I could find an outlet and wow I kind of don't want to leave haha. Second to review too!

Surprisingly, they carry a wide selection of international products. I was delighted to find these viral ice creams at the West Side location (there's also one on the East Side of Madison). These ice creams became popular about 1.5-2 years ago. I first tried lemon in LA late 2024 and then mango in Houston earlier this year, but this is the first time I've seen them in an American grocery store. While they're also available at Global Market (an Asian grocery store on the East Side), Woodman's price is unbeatable--just $9 for a box of three, compared to around $12 plus tax in LA. The outer shell is a crunchy white chocolate coating, while the inside is fruity ice cream flavors like mango, peach, lemon, and apricot (no actual fruits). They also offer unique flavors such as durian, grape, and tangerine. It's great to see Woodman's carrying these, hopefully more people will get to try them!

I ordered the smoked turkey sandwich, and the gentleman taking my order pointed to a random piece of focaccia on display on the counter and asked if I'd like my sandwich on that. I don't know what kind of bread if normally comes on, but I have since read about the thicker/crustier bread on some reviews. Gosh am I glad he offered the focaccia. The bread made this sandwich, it was sooo good. It was light and fluffy despite being substantial in size, and had this delightful little crunch from the sea salt on it (not in a salty sense, just in a wonderful texture sense). There was a ton of turkey on it and it was a yummy smoked flavor. The other fixings were standard but complimented the sandwich very well. The sandwich was tasty and filling. All this said, because I paid $16 for my sandwich, I wouldn't make it a regular occurrence, maybe a special treat. But if it's on regular bread, particularly a harder crust bread, I think I'd skip it entirely. You do get a lot of sandwich for your money, but I just can't justify it. So, overall, this is definitely worth trying and deciding for yourself - I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I've tried some of their beers and they've been OK. Like other Aldi stores, this one has been recently renovated so it's much nicer and better organized. For newcomers, it's important to remember to bring a quarter for the shopping cart and tote bags since they don't bag for you at checkout (you can also buy recycled or plastic bags there).
