First of all, I'd like to say, the managers and supervisors on staff here are very good at what they do. They put customer satisfaction first, and it shows. One day, I had just gotten in line and a manager came by and told me I could go in the express line. He said, "I'm so sorry for the wait." I barely waited, but I appreciated it! I've pretty much been able to get everything on my grocery list when I come here. I mostly buy things that give me fuel saver points, hah! I mean, honestly, the fuel saver points really make a difference when you have a car that takes 15 gallons. Um, so I hate to admit it, but the sushi here is probably one of my favorite. I like the salmon-avocado one. They put more salmon and avocado on top. Like giant cubes of salmon and avocado. Also, the Chinese food is pretty darn good. I've stopped getting take-out from other places and just gone to Hy-Vee. read more

Generally I go to Woodmans for grocery. This time decided to give Hyvee a chance. Meat, poultry and fish is a lot superior here. There is a butcher onsite. I got some salmon which someone skinned for me. It was fresher as well. They also have a lot of stuff baked in store. The banana bread was really good. I tried the pecan bourbon tart and banana creme tart. Pecan bourbon tart was better. They also have some food counters in the store. I tried the chinese one. General tso's chicken, fire cracker chicken, crab rangoon and chicken spring roll all was decent. And the price was reasonable. Overall this store is a lot smaller than Woodmans. Also number of products was a lot lower. Prices were slightly higher. read more

I had an event and needed good food that was convenient. Hy-Vee is always our go to for catering and they never disappoint. I ordered the slider bar , $13 a person and they count 3 sliders per person so you don't need to order for the exact number of guests. You can choose 3 different meats, two sides and it comes with all the toppings. They do deliver but I opted to pick it up and they were so helpful when I did. If you want good food and convenient this should be your first call. You can also select from many catering options on their website. read more

I love shopping at Hy-Vee typically - however, I ordered I decorated sugar cookies for an employee appreciation event at my community. They came decorated (beautifully, but not what I needed). When I called to get them redone, Emily was rude and condescending essentially just deflected blame onto "whoever ordered" aka me instead of apologizing for the inconvenience. I offered to bring them back & complimented but she instead was once again rude. She said we ordered sugar cookies w no jimmies. Upon arrival, she rolled her eyes didn't say much at first, then once again blamed the way I ordered it, switching the narrative saying I ordered jimmies. Emily in the bakery was recommended by one of our staff & I wish I could've had the same experience. read more

Most recently we ordered 4 different cupcakes for my daughters 14th birthday, they will arrange the cupcakes into what appears to be a cake. Hyvee gives a personal touch to any of your needs. The perfect supermarket with absolutely everything you want at the price you want, does not exist. I don't mind shopping from different stores through the month to grab different items. Howerver, I will not be returning to Hy-Vee on Whitney Way because the selection is not adequate, the quality discrepancies in store brand items, and the especilly horrible service I've endured several times. Every time I met an employee with "Hi, how are you today?" they either don't answer or, worse, just blurt out "what do you want?" if you take a second too long to ask your question. When a posted discount does not activate at the register, or when the scanned price is different from the shelf tag, every cashier I've had just shrugged. You have to really insist, ask again several times what we can do, and then they'll shrug again and simply ask "do you want it or not". Plants and flowers are often missing their price tag, but there are no dedicated floral department employees, and if you ask anybody else, they just say they don't know and therefore can't sell it to you. No efforts were ever made to even answer a simple question. My last straw was the customer service representative I had to face after I tried to return energy drinks I realized were expired after I took them home. I spent almost an hour at the desk, begging for a refund. I am a very polite person in general, and I work retail as well, so I know sometimes customers can be horrible to deal with, and I definitely was not one of them. I was accused of switching them with older ones, of using a different receipt, of stealing another customer's receipt to return old drinks I had sitting around... After almost an hour, the representative just threw a $5 bill at me. I drove home crying. That was my last straw. No matter what you're looking for, Metcalfe's and Metro Market will have a better selection, better prices, and above all, will treat you with the standard minimum dignity! read more

Bakery Ordered small buns ahead of time to ensure freshness. Did not realize until I was home that the buns were put in a box, not in a plastic bag or even covered. Just in the box, tossed in. I bought a sushi poke bowl. This one was a large size. When the package was sealed, all you could see on top of cucumbers, avocado, sashimi with sauce, and a little dab of seaweed in the middle. Presumably, there is rice underneath since it's a poke bowl. When I sat down to eat it, turns out there was a whole mass of head lettuce hidden underneath. Like there was more lettuce than anything else. it's not a war crime or anything, but it made me mad all the same. read more

I normally don't write bad reviews, but this one cashier is extremely rude and disrespectful of both her customers and coworkers. Every time I've been in her line, she has "corrected" the bagger on the type of bag I request, by then mixing and matching plastic and paper. The bagger had to stand there while she forced plastic bags upon me and my purchase "because it looked nicer". I've seen her do this more than once and to multiple people. Not only is she undermining her coworker, but she is completely disrespectful of my feelings. Over bags. Wow. I talked to the bagger at another time about this woman, and she said that complaints have been made to management, and nothing has changed. Unbelievable. read more

2 stars for the seafood counter. 2 stars for the dining area auto server/waiter staffing (see below for why) 5 stars for the location 0 stars that my initial posting and review got quashed because someone else created this listing and more folks kept checking in so this became the official one. And yes, I was there on opening day making this new add. Seafood: my brother pointed out a stark difference in age, texture and usefulness in the catfish and 16/20 shrimp that I bought from this location. 1) The catfish was fatty and old. It should have been refused at the distributor level. 2) The shrimp had been thawed and refrozen several times and HE WAS SHOCKED That I let them give this to me at the counter. Well the shrimp were limp not fresh and tender. The shrimp were dingy and not the colorful as they should have been. They shrimp were clearly frozen multiple times after being thawed which was overwhelming because I was ready for dinner. Needless to say, I returned them. 5 stars on how the service was handled. It went over very well. Dining area - my sorority sister complained about it but i dismissed her. Well, the same Tuesday I bought from the meat counter. I got a call and needed to send out some work so I can to the dining area to get the emails off from my laptop. I felt guilty and bad for not dining because the servers count on any seat taken to make income. The young man was mannerable, attentive and understanding. I tipped. Yep! I felt the need to do so as I've waited tables before but the more I thought about it - why is the eastside is seat and serve yourself but the westside is "let's be fancy' and we must serve you. At opening I thought this was cool but through practical use - I feel it's a bit much. And comes as classicist when you know good ole' Madison. Location = perfecto. The build out, decor, aesthetics are all working. In and out location replacing part of the old strip mall. Great! Not far from Hilldale as well. So all things considered - beware when you go to the seafood counter. Yes, I'm from Louisiana and I'm not that kind of picking when I'm this far from water to get fresh shellfish BUT at the same cost per pound as Whole Foods - I expect more. I mean really $13/lb is a special price not the regular price so the quality should keep up with the pricing. Today, they're running that $13/lb special pricing again with the tag "Responsible Choice" which can lure one in but heed the warning and look elsewhere. read more

Overall, I like this Hy-Vee. It's not my go-to for groceries, but there are definitely some highlights that are worth an occasional trip. PROS + Fresh produce with fun items I don't see at other stores + Some very delicious bakery items (cupcakes in the case, turtle brownies when they're made with a brownie base instead of cake, red velvet mini layer cake, and an amazing brownie I can't remember the name of that used to be in the deli case but haven't seen in years) + Clean, bright, and kept up - it's been open a few years now and it still looks new + Great sales + A wide array of deli items & prepared foods NEUTRAL +/- No self-check lanes CONS - Their house brand can be pretty terrible quality - Items that aren't on sale seem to be pricier than average - Parking lot is kind of wonky - On a recent trip no one in the bakery knew how to properly ring up the cupcakes I bought - I was overcharged by $1 but decided my time was worth more than waiting around and involving a third person The combo of higher prices + generic items I don't care for keeps me from doing my regular shopping here, but it's worth shopping the sales and exploring their large fresh foods area. read more

With the recent dip in gasoline prices and fuel saver points accumulated in the last 30 days, my wife paid $.58 per gallon at the pump today. OMG YES! I've always been a fan of Hy-Vee but seriously the Hy-Vee's I've been going to are nothing compared to this Hy-Vee! THERE IS A BAR IN THE RESTAURANT. Yes a BAR. And they serve Spotted Cow! But they were out when I went there but still, A BAR WITH SPOTTED COW! Ok can you tell I am not from here? Because they probably sell Spotted Cow everywhere but when I can come up from Chicago ad hit up Hy-Vee, I can now get a Spotted Cow! Oh they also have TVs in the restaurant. Seriously I'd never leave this area had I been going to school here. Grand Buffet + Bar + TVs + Internet Access + Electrical Outlets at every table + Single room bathroom (multiple single room bathrooms) = My second home had I lived here. I'm a regular at Metcalfe's but seem to be the only person I know who is! I support them for the employment of individuals with disabilities. I have previously enjoyed the blues/soul/roots music stage at Metcalfe's Brat Fest. Between what I'm told are premium prices and doing away with the blues stage in 2015, I've been shopping around. Today I was in the area of the west side Hy-Vee. I've visited here to buy 'just a couple things' in the past as well. Consistently its time consuming to do just that. The store is vast (think big box store) so it takes time to get to where you're going and find what you need. This is a good store depending on your intent. For a quick in and out, go somewhere smaller. You need 30 minutes here minimum. On this visit I found myself going up and down the aisles a couple times to find the snack area I was looking for. So the layout IS working for Hy-Vee, keeping a customer in the store longer and them picking up things they don't need (think Minions sugared cereal because your kid walked by it twice and there's a MINION IN THE BOX), but its not efficient for the busy shopper. Pluses are its spacious entrance, produce is organized neatly, its well lit, clean, moderate temperature, and is fairly quiet. One of the things that gets added to my 'just a couple things' intended list is something from the bakery. They are smashing it! Donuts, angel food cake, the cold pie slices in the cooler on the left, and the PUPPY CHOW are all delightful! Also, this store offers cooking classes to further customer engagement. I have not yet procured food from the cafe and hot bars but they look ample and inviting. Workers offer assistance when you appear to be looking for something, and make conversation at check out. Today I was thanked by the bagger for doing business with this Hy-Vee! There is a diverse age and race range among the staff. However, Hy-Vee, I want to see people I know have a disability as employees in visible roles! Contact me if you aren't yet connected locally on how to make this happen! In summary, this is a corporate chain store. As such it has that standardized synthetic vibe (or lack of vibe). The atmosphere is comfortable but not overly inviting. I'm withholding one star until Hy-Vee 'localizes' by diversifying the employees a bit more, and finds ways to be charitable, or make the store more intriguing. Feel free to comment if you have specific questions! read more

Great location, very open/bright layout but prices on produce aren't competitive with Woodman's. I'm not a big fan of the store itself. For such a large place, it didn't have a large selection of items. Their soda aisle was lacking. They push their off-brand items cheap, and sell brand-name items for what you can get them for at a smaller, local grocery store. I wasn't impressed. If I lived near it, I'd probably shop there by default, but nothing is drawing me in for my weekly shopping... HOWEVER, the food court was amazing! The choices! The quality! It took me one lunch to figure out how it all worked, but outside of that, it was super. Their Asian buffet was really, really good. We opted for the buffet over the 2-entree meal - for an extra $1.50, we could sample everything. Knowing what I know now, I'd go back and get the 2-entree meal and still be plenty stuffed... I really liked the chicken egg rolls - you could see the meat, and they weren't too cabbagy. The sesame chicken was fantastic, too. I appreciated the dining area for eating in. Carrying out would be just as slick when in a hurry. I will eat here again (and again... and again...). Prices were quite reasonable. read more

Just saw Hy Vee's "I Need a Hero" TV spot. Hy Vee actually compares its managers & employees to first responders! It is incredibly sad and self-serving. Also, the spot fails to include Hy Vee's management that decided price gouging its customers on toilet paper, wipes, etc., during this pandemic, was a hero-like thing to do. Hy Vee's price gouging cost them a customer and I hope others take notice - including the Better Business Bureau. read more

Prolouge: Maybe I'm jaded because I actually liked going to Copps across the street. It wasn't my favorite grocery store in Madison, but it was decent and easy to find things. Due to a commuting situation and needing to use the bus, I am sort of stuck with Hyvee. It's a pain that it's a longer walk from the bus stop, but oh well. It is what it is. My actually review: I have serious mixed feelings about Hyvee. So we'll go with a classic pro/con list. Pros -I like their "restaurant/buffet" concept, even though I have only tried it once. Food was decent, and this type of thing is great for the lunch crowd. -Bakery is decent. Not thrilling, but taste and selection is pretty good for grocery store breads and pastries. -Good selection for fancy cheese, meats, antipasto picnic fare -Cleanliness -Coupons in the Bucky Book -They have hatch chili peppers when in season -They employ people with disabilities and seem to promote them and treat them well -Nice selection of bulk grains/granolas -Meat department decent quality -Samples are fun! Cons -Non-organic lettuce selection is sad. Not many choices and little of each kind. Often not the freshest looking. -Produce arrangement with so many "tables" makes it hard to find things, and produce sales seem almost non-existent. -What.is.with.the.layout of the store? Hard to find things and it doesn't flow great. I'm about 15 trips in, and I still get frustrated. -Thin crust take and bake pizza steams in their foil pan. -Prices for things that aren't on sale seem high. -Selection for some things really weirdly small, other things expansive -Need more checkout lanes open. It's been at least three people deep every time I've gone, and it doesn't move fast. read more

My husband and I have been shopping at this Hy-Vee since we moved to Madison four years ago. Almost always, it's a negative experience with surly, unfriendly, unhelpful employees. At first we thought this might be the "Madison way," despite the idea of "Wisconsin nice." But since we have found many other establishments, including grocery stores, with friendly and helpful employees, we realize that it is this Hy-Vee that is so bad. Perhaps it is all Hy-Vees; we don't know, since we don't shop at any others. We're tired of having to toughen up inside and getting knots in our stomach every time we go into this store, so we're going to stop. I don't know why you employ such grouchy people; likely it's a top-down, management problem. In any case, it would be good if you change your attitudes. read more

As if supply chain and hiring aren't problematic enough, Hy-Vee recently reorganized the store on Whitney Way. Used to be our go to store. Recently they have been moving products all over. Almost all products are in different locations and isles. Seems the shifts are occurring regularly as a strategic corporate move. Very hard to shop efficiently. Also, eggs are almost never fully stocked, the case is dirty with broken product, and very difficult to get support for what you're looking for. read more

It's a new Hy-Vee at the corner of Odana and Whitney Way. It clean, it's employee owned, it's based in Iowa and the selection and prices are pretty damn good. Certainly two notches above Coops, calmer than Woodmans and cheaper than Metcalfe's. Totally worth checking out. For their opening month special, they're offering fresh Copper River Sockeye for $12/lb. That's as cheap as you can ever find it on the West Coast and it's some of the best Salmon on the planet. I know where I'll be shopping all month. A great addition to West side food shopping. read more

I really don't enjoy grocery shopping in general, but I've come to rely on Hy-Vee for a consistently good experience. I have a few issues with this location, but the bottom line is that the excellent customer service ensures that I will always return. I used to think their prices were too high for my everyday needs. Then I started paying more attention to the weekly ads and realized that they run a lot of excellent sales. Their prices often beat the competition, and I can rely on a decent cycle of sales on things I buy regularly (cottage cheese, yogurt, produce). The fuel saver program is outstanding. They make it easy to accumulate significant savings because they pair the weekly sales with fuel saver promotions. I also love that there is a long list of gas stations at which the savings can be redeemed, as opposed to some franchises at which the money is only good at one gas station attached to the store. The hot deli counter has a lot of options, and the best part is that they're open late enough to be useful to me (9:00 PM). I agree with the reviewers who comment on the store's layout. It's not necessarily atypical (dairy is allllll the way in the back), but it's not always logical either. For example, recently I was searching for the tortillas that were listed in the sales ad. I found tortillas in two other locations before I found the ones on sale in a third location. Why wouldn't all tortillas be in the same place? As I mentioned above, the customer service is what sells Hy-Vee to me. The staff is unfailingly polite and engaged. A few days ago I was in a pretty neutral mood walking into the store. An employee who happened to be walking by the carts stopped to talk for a few seconds. It wasn't odd or insincere; it was just a nice extended greeting that put me in a decidedly good mood for the rest of my shopping trip. I can always count on the cashiers for a positive, interesting discussion as well. I can't stress enough that this happens EVERY single time I go to Hy-Vee, no matter the time of day. I would only like to see two small changes to the Hy-Vee experience. There are almost always one or two items that appear in the ad that don't exist in the store. One item (Cottage Doubles) appears week after week and the store has never carried that item. The other issue is that as friendly as the staff is, they are often unfamiliar with the store layout. Every time I've asked for directions to a particular product they have been unable to locate it without doing the same wandering I just did. This is particularly true with items in the sales ad. I can understand not knowing where every single thing is, but it'd be especially helpful if they paid special attention to familiarizing themselves with the sales that are being offered that week. read more

Never did I think I would be writing a review for a grocery store but Hy-Vee has earned it. So where do I start? Let's start with the basics. It's clean, bright, has a friendly staff, and a great selection of products. For a grocery store, I am impressed with both their bakery as well as cheese selection. Moving on from the basics, the store has stations where you can get chinese, sushi, pizza, hamburgers, chicken with some delicious sides. You can order it to go or take it in to the glassed in dining room at the corner of the store. order ala carte or go for the all you can eat option (if memory serves me right it was $11.99). Yes, I will admit that my better half and I tried the General Tso's chicken with a chicken egg roll. Fueled by courage brought on by a wine tour and prolonged tasting, we took the plunge and quite honestly, we weren't disappointed. It won't rival sit down places here in Madison but in a pinch (or when slightly buzzed), it definitely fits the bill. Yes, Whole Foods and Metcalfe's have their niche but for everyday shopping, you will find me here. read more

As a whole I've recently taken a very positive liking to this chain. The two in Madison area on the west side I've shopped at quite a few times recently. Of the two I tend to favor the Fitchburg location. But I'm writing today about the Whitney Way location. Broken down, I love the produce departments of each store equally well. Stocked with very attractive greens and fruits of a surprising wide variety. The people keeping this department are to be commended. This department deserves more stars than I'm giving the store as a whole. The cheese and deli counters too have nearly everything I could hope for. Great staffing and a couple of the (I cringe when I feel I have to refer to them as Associates.) young guys I spoke with really seem to have a vast knowledge of their product and this is so valued to any customer who is searching for that particular type of fromage but haven't enough information. I love that word. I recall my first afternoon in Amsterdam. I was watching a Dutch cartoon, and while I had no idea what was being said, I seemed to retain one word: Fromage. Cheese. I'm still pleased with that little gain in my vocabulary that resulted as I waited for my wife to get dressed so we could wander the streets and explore. The butcher department was also really helpful and two particular guys have repeatedly been great assurance when I am looking for some guidance. I know my way around the cuts pretty well, but having someone who is educated in each area is so valuable. Which brings me to my sole complaint. The fishmonger I purchased some fish. Cod in particular. There were two varieties in the display. When I asked about one verses the other, the man on the opposite side of the counter steered me to the one I should've chose NOT to purchase. It was purely my mistake, because I've been taught to always smell and touch the fish as I make my selection. But because the gentleman working had the seeming knowledge, I made the mistake of simply taking his word. Price was the second factor that distracted me. I went for the less expensive of the two. When I arrived home and began getting my work area established, the odor of fish was very evident. At this instant I should've wrapped it back up and drove back and chosen the other fish. But my menu was set in stone and time was short. In short, the fish tasted as bad as it smelled. In fact I'm the only one of my family that ate any. My wife and son wisely chose to step back from the table and go to Culver's !! I wasn't insulted. I know I can cook. I should've joined them. Though I only swallowed a couple bites before I too threw the fish into the sink and dug something else out of the fridge and chose to forget the fish. The following I had diarrhea and around the second bout, it dawned on me that the last time this situation occurred was the time I accepted that same fish guys "expertise" unquestioned. The moral of this review is don't believe what any fish vendor tells you unless you KNOW they are selling you too quality product. The old guy at the Whitney Way fish counter is a nice man but he isn't a butcher OR fishmonger with training. He's a nice man who means well, and helps to sell fish that's otherwise heading directly to the dumpster when the counter closes that day. As for the review. This review would be 5 stars had I not felt compelled to relay this story. Check your fish yourself. 1. It should only vaguely smell of the sea. 2. The eyes should be clear and dark, not dried or milky. 3. The flesh firm, and should not stay dented when you press into with your finger. If it smells like fish strongly, it's cat food. Buy it for your cat if it's a bargain. Don't buy it for your table. read more

In the past, I have contacted the managers at Woodmans and Copps about specific products. These products were once offered at the stores. I asked to special order these items. I got the same thing from both stores. "we'll contact you with some information on these products" then nothing or "We can't get it from our supplier". I contacted HyVee corporate in Iowa. In a matter of minutes the manager at the Whitney Way store contacted me. He is special ordering the items I wanted. It is wonderful! I love going to the store. Now, I also have a friendly, supportive contact where I can get certain items unavailable anywhere else. read more

SUSHI! Yes. You read that right..... We are all about the Hy-Vee sushi. I will admit we've had it 2 days in a row before. Their selection is excellent and if they don't have what you're looking for, they will make it for you! It is SO GOOD (we're not sure how grocery store sushi can be so good either). I really love their 2 or 3 roll combo sushi plates. Such a steal! I always have fantastic customer service at this location. The cashiers, the food servers, the stock people.... Everyone is super friendly and willing to help. Their groceries are a tad pricey, in my opinion, but their gas perks make up for it and every now and then you can find the $5 off $50 or $10 off $100 coupon in the penny saver. So that helps! Their hot bar and deli has some fantastic options, as well. We'll be back often for that and the sushi! read more

Hy-Vee does some things well, and does some things not well. I find that if I stick to the things it does well, then I really enjoy the experience. If I try to ask it to do something it's not good at, then it's not quite as good. On the positive side, the prepared foods section is really good, and the meals in the Chinese and Italian section are great. My wife and I have an 8-month-old daughter, and it's nice to be able to go to the grocery store and pick up a few things we need and get a "dinner out" of cheap Chinese food that's actually better than most of the takeout places in town. The store also does a good job of stocking some interesting items, like my favorite protein bars that are actually made in Pittsburgh, but are still available here. The store brand products are generally of good quality and are offered at a good price. The store's greatest strength is probably the employees. For a big corporate grocery store, it actually has a lot of small-store feel to it. The employees are very nice and helpful, always willing to listen to questions or concerns, and don't ever give me the impression that they're put out when they have to deal with me. There are two major negatives that I would point to. One is general in Hy-Vee as a chain, which is that I feel the prices are a little high and the rewards structure is a little weird. I'd rather have better sales than gas rewards. The second minor quibble is that there's a lack of casual seating unless you want to sit in the cafe. The Fitchburg Hy-Vee does a good job with this. They have a big casual seating area and you can grab something to eat and drink and sit there for a bit. The only casual seating (indoors) at this location is by the Starbucks kiosk, and I feel a little bit weird bringing my food over into that area and not buying something at the Starbucks. Overall, though, good store. I really enjoy walking around in here for some reason. EDIT: I forgot to put in the thing that actually made me decide to write this review. The breakfast buffet on weekends is absolutely awful. For $15, it's even more of a kick in the shins. My omelet was totally brown on the outside and undercooked inside, the biscuits were doughy and not completely done, and the selection of sides was pretty uninspired. read more

Overall I like this store - it is sort of the (recent) modern version of a grocery store with a in-house restaurant, lots of ready to go cooked food, large meat, seafood, cheese and bakery departments - however, the selection can be hit and miss sometimes, and the prices are a bit high. But my main problem is with their catering. Definitely 'beware' with this... here's my story. I've eaten from their catering before - a few years back we fell into the 'take out' Thanksgiving dinner from them and it was pretty good. I think we tried a few salads and things right from their deli as well and it was all OK. This Summer we went to a graduation party. They had it catered from Hyvee and it was amazing! Yummy burgers, juicy pulled chicken sandwiches and a number of side dishes - a few floating in ice baths to keep everything chill on a hot day. Next comes my daughters birthday party. We decide to order the same thing mentioned above since it was SO good at our friends party. I ordered from this (Whitney Way) Hyvee instead of from my friends Hyvee (East Washington). Bad move on my part. The food was delivered and on time. They set up the hot trays for us - but we had to dump in the food. No ice baths. The rolls were delish and the side dishes were mostly OK - but the meat was awful. The burgers were super thick and super dry and tasteless. The chicken was SO dry it was awful. I don't think many of our guests even wanted to try it. We were embarrassed it was so bad. The beans had really way too much vinegar or something in them too. Couldn't hardly eat them. Fruit salad was good, but how do you screw that up. We complained afterwards, but sort of got this 'oh you're kidding?' response and that's about it. I would think twice about ordering party catering from here. Very expensive for very low quality food. Stick to the store food where you can see what you are getting for. read more

"Sorry, we're short on people" said the manager walking back and forth, staring at the long lines to check out rather than doing something about it. read more

I love Hyvee West! Most of all I like the diverse and friendly staff. I feel like staff actually want to talk to me and say hello. Don't get me wrong usually I'm fine grabbing my k-cups and some mac and cheese running out never saying a word to anyone but the genuine friendliness in the aisles and at the register often makes my day :) Thanks Hyvee West! read more

The prices are reasonable, the store is clean, and the employees are friendly. It's not quite as cheap as Woodman's, but better than Copps and less expensive than Metcalfe's. The specialty cheese selection is excellent. There is a fulltime cheese staffer here. Housemade fresh mozzarella is made here once per week. The produce section is pretty good although smaller than Metcalfe's. For example, I once searched for Beets and they didn't have any. Hy-Vee is the only place I've seen selling Hatch peppers (seasonal). Deli meats&cheeses are pre-sliced, which is not really my thing. The seafood selection is very good and the meat selection is good too. Many varieties of brats, sausages, marinated chickens, and kabobs. If you are looking for a very high end steak type thing, I wouldn't recommend Hy-Vee, there aren't a lot of options. Small selection of grassfed beef and bison available. My primary complaint is how they arrange the store, sometimes item locations can be very odd. Try locating the Mexican chorizo as a challenge. The seating situation confuses me. Hy-Vee has a sit down restaurant&bar with a small limited food menu. It also has a cafeteria style selection of hot food (Chinese, American, pizza/pasta, etc). Cold salad bar and prepared cold meals seem unremarkable. The Chinese-American food is what you would expect, I have not tried the other foods. You can buy your food from the cafeteria style line and pay for it but the seating is all inside the restaurant area. So sitting in the restaurant area with the food you already purchased seems like it'd be really awkward--there are servers, but you don't need them, so are you supposed to tip...? The sales situation here can be a bit odd at time--they have these tags saying "Red Hot Deal" but you look at the original price and it's the same! The Red Hot Deals tag means nothing. Once a month on Tuesdays, they have a 2 hour sale of completely random products, some of which can be a very good deal. I recommend checking ahead for these deals on their Facebook the same day, although they can also give you a flyer with the 2 hour sale foods. The FB daily deal can also have good finds--just tell the cashier you are using the Facebook deal. They have an amazing deal on Weds, 15% all items in the Wellness section. Once I had a complaint about the rotisserie chicken, so I filled out the receipt survey and got a very prompt response from management and they sent me a gift card. When they first opened and didn't have enough pita bread, they remedied it based on customer feedback. Overall I'm happy that Hy-Vee is my primary grocery store. read more

I grew up in Illinois with a Hy Vee and raised on a regular diet of their deli kitchen meals. So imagine my amazement when this opened up not far from my house. This Hy Vee is one of the larger ones, so the selection is fantastic. The prices are very reasonable, and their generic/store brands pricing put them on par with what you'd find at Woodman's. Super friendly and helpful staff. With the number of employees I see in there, you don't have to look far if you need help. The kitchen is spectacular. If you want to stop in for any meal, it can be done deliciously and at a great price. You get a lot for what you pay. This is a welcome addition to the neighborhood, and I look forward to being here regularly! read more

So happy this place opened if only for the Grand Buffet at lunch. I don't know about the weekend buffets, but my Dad and I are very happy about the Grand Buffet. For a price you would pay at some fast food places, you get to pick and choose at a well-stocked salad bar, the hot bar, and fresh fruit. The hot bar has a server that dishes up what you want, usually meatloaf with sides, chicken, fried fish or baked fish, or something similar. Also, included in the price of the Grand is the Chinese and Italian food bars. Even more inexpensive is the Chinese buffet bar by itself. It must be popular, as I see many people getting just that. The dining room is very clean. The only thing is if you go in late to lunch, you may find the server that takes your drink order disappear. I would not suggest getting coffee if you want a refill. The rest of the store is fantastic to walk around in on a cold winters day. The Hy-vee brands of products are moderately priced and they are always having sales. read more
