It was created as part of the Skyline Urban Renewal Project launched by the Denver Urban Renewal Authority in 1964 to redevelop downtown areas. Constructed began in 1972 and lasted until 1975 and was designed by acclaimed landscape architect Lawrence Halprin. Halprin designed the sunken, three-block plaza with geometric concrete planters, stepped seating, and canyon-like fountains meant to mimic Colorado's red-stone foothills and natural arroyos. Documented as the first project in the nation to survey a mid-century modern landscape through the Historic American Landscapes Survey. By the 1980s, use of the park dropped, and the sunken, walled design faced criticism for being hard to maintain, difficult to host events, and attracting crime and homeless people. After a long debate between preservationists and business owners, much of Halprin's original sunken design was demolished or altered in 2003, removing berms and replacing most features with flat lawns and a simpler layout. In February 2026 on a $30 million comprehensive transformation led by Denver Parks & Recreation, the Downtown Denver Partnership, and the design firm RIOS. The renovation removes remaining barriers and stairs to create a flat, accessible space for downtown, featuring a central interactive water plaza that converts into an ice-skating rink in the winter, a new park café/bar, fire terraces, and open event spaces. Phase 1 construction is targeted to continue through 2027.

In the summer, kids are running through splash pads and people lounge with iced coffees like it's their personal terrace. Winter? There's an ice rink and a cozy little vibe that makes downtown feel like a Hallmark movie. It's not huge, but it packs in charm--ping pong tables, food trucks, random art, and the kind of people-watching you only get in a place that never really quiets down. It's one of those spots you don't plan on staying long in... but somehow, you do.

Even with a map in hand, I chose my own adventure, wondering along the winding paths. My favorite part to walk was Kathy's boardwalk. I suggest you see the beautiful work that was done. After about an hour and a half of exploring, we started to feel hungry. With a café restaurant nearby, we stopped there to check it out. There were plenty of delicious options. We indulged in the smoky chicken sandwich, sweet potato fries, and a cookie for dessert, all paired with a refreshing Arnold Palmer. It was a bit pricey and set us back about $50, but it was definitely worth it. After another hour, we called it good. Exiting, we stopped by the gift shop, where we picked up a few trinkets just because everything else was a bit high. Overall, we had an amazing time exploring the gardens. I'm already planning to come back and see the ones we missed.

My favorites were the dahlias and the sculptures that were sprinkled throughout the gardens. Everything was so well curated and just beautiful. There is a complimentary 3 level parking garage. Fantastic gift shop - make sure you walk around on your way out!

For years (maybe even decades), Glendale's annual Fourth of July fireworks display has been held at…read moreCreekside Park. The park is closed off for safety reasons but we take a picnic and camp out on the lawn at the neighboring Staybridge Suites to watch the action up close. It's a super fun way to kick off your Fourth of July festivities (for whatever reason, Glendale's fireworks always happen a day or two before July 4th). Earlier this week it was announced that the highly anticipated Glendale Riverwalk Project will be put on hold http://www.bizjournals.com/denver/blog/real_deals/2015/04/175-million-development-planned-for-glendale.html?surround=etf&ana=e_article. Instead, a new retail and entertainment district called Glendale 180 will be developed on a 22 acre parcel between Colorado Boulevard and Cherry Street, and Virginia Avenue and Cherry Creek. The city plans to break ground in the Fall of 2015 and officials hope to open for business in 2017. And this will mean that Creekside Park is going away. I'm torn. It's truly a shame to lose a nice, big park. But Glendale and its neighbors will be gaining job opportunities and new fun recreational activities. As it stands now, the design is thoughtfully planned with lots of open space, year-round landscaping, and meandering pathways that will create an inviting community gathering place. No office or residential space will be included in the new development, just shops, restaurants, and a cinema. And lots of parking. And relaxed open container laws! Apparently, Glendale used to be quite the hot spot back in the day so it's planning to get back to its partytime roots. Glendale 180 - see what they did there? The final fireworks display in Creekside Park is scheduled for Thursday, July 2, 2015. I, for one, will be there to help send Creekside Park out with a bang. Yelp Review #400

I forgot about the joy of watching fireworks, it was like I was five years old all over again with a permanent grin plastered on my face. I hope Glendale decides to keep the Annual firework show going even after the new Glendale development goes up. I was impressed and awed by the whole evening. Thank you Vicki P. for showing me some of the best fireworks in Denver. Pro Tips for the optimal Firework experience: *Bring chairs (cup holders are a plus) *Bring a jacket or a blanket (it gets chilly in the evening) *Food + Libation = Fun times *Parking is a hot mess, I recommend parking at least a half mile away and walking so you don't get stuck in traffic when leaving with all the closed/blocked streets surrounding the area
