They do, however, seem motivated to: 1) Get off the phone with you as quickly as possible. 2) Send you to another department before you even finish what you are asking--or say "no," as quickly as possible, regardless of whether they are correct or not. At least they let you linger because they do sell lots of DIY equipment and materials...but with a "DIY mentality," ie find it yourself. Special call out to the Yelper who mentioned being sold a discontinued stain: 100%. Same thing happened with me with a marble sample.

Herzog's is big- not Home Depot big- but it's got a lot of what you may need for home repairs. They carry lighting equipment, painting items, a kitchen+ bathroom design dep't, textiles, BBQ accessories, vacuum cleaners, gardening supplies, candles, some clothing- heck, even minimalist jewelry in a glass case, etc. My girl with the glasses in the paint department was smooth and patient. She took her time when we asked her questions about colors and how each color stain would react to raw wood. Service was fine, we left with smiles and was the opposite of everything that's been written here in the past. Whether you're working with a contractor like we are or you're one of those Do-It-Yourselfers, this is your place.

This Kingston, NY Lowe's is about a 15ish minute drive from where we were at and checked most of the boxes. For a weekday afternoon, this Lowe's was a breeze. No hoards of people around you and you had the aisles to yourself- but floor sales associates, were almost nil. When you finally got someone, service was helpful and to the point- including the self-check cashier who acknowledged hubs' military discount when she had to swipe a barcode. We didn't have major issues. It's easy-going here and we took advantage of some sale items with a good price tag. I like their products- but as far as on-the-spot service, you gotta search for it here.

How is it that I'm the first person to review P&T Surplus?!?…read more This place is really cool. It's a junk shop, and mean that in the best way. They have electronics, computers, and miscellaneous mechanical stuff (metal stock, plastic stock, etc) I believe they also deal in scrap metals by the pound, if you happen to have a ton of scrap brass rods or something. There's a cool vibe here where local artists (that, I assume, have used parts from P&T Surplus to create sculpture and other mixed-media art) have pieces on display. They also have a really large section of obsolete computers and parts, which is good if you need to replace an ISA card or some other kind of 10+ year old computer part that nobody seems to sell any more. To me, surplus stores are about picking up obsolete electronics for experimentation and parts, not art, but hey, if that's what keeps this place going, then I'm happy for it. The prices are not marked on a lot of the surplus items, so you have to go ask at the counter. The prices can be a little high, but luckily they are quite nice there, and sometimes you can dicker with them a little. One thing that is a little weird is that a lot of the electronic surplus seems to come from IBM (some of it is still labelled) and I always wonder if they came upon it honestly. I think they probably have some kind of deal to purchase the IBM scrap, but you never know. Anyway, there really are no other options in the area for an electronics junk-hound like me. We'll still get those- but now as things have changed for us, we're getting kitchen items, cast-iron skillets, etc to use on weekends when we're in town. The right side of Houst is dedicated to kitchen items such as cutlery, cleaning supplies, pots+pans, serving spoons, welcome mats+other outdoor items. The left side has painting supplies, plumbing products and other DIY projects that need seeing quickly. For bigger home improvements, ask. Price? It's Woodstock. I'm not driving out of my way to save a a few dollars. But, these folks have a rewards system which you can accumulate and use for future purchases. As far as service, it's unbeatable.

This has been one of our go-to home improvement stores for anything from shrubs, light bulbs, cleaning supplies and other things. Our most experience here was perfect. Now mind you, we'd gotten here like 1/2 hour before closing to get 4 gallons of black exterior paint so our contractors can paint our 7 panel wood slat fence. We knew we wanted a basic black so it's not like we struggled. We selected a high-quality brand that could tolerate the elements then selected a swatch so the paint mixer can take it from there. Service was awesome and we'd gotten the 4 gallons at a decent price using hubs' Military discount. The paint mixer was extremely pleasant and eager to please.

I have been coming here for 10+ years, always first before Lowe's because it is so clean and easy to navigate. Eileen seems to know everything about the store from memory. Andy and Brian don't sit still, they are always flying around helping everyone find the right stuff. I recently went there looking for furniture hardware to fix my bed headboard, right before the store closed. Glenn and Lou both helped me design a new bolt/nut setup to fix the pieces with stronger parts so it wouldn't break again, while using the existing drilled holes so it looks perfect. I was the last customer out as they were shutting off the lights and then I heard it was even Lou's birthday...stayed late to help me with a $10 purchase. This is how True Value earns the loyalty of their customers and takes the stress and uncertainty out of the average DIY jobs. Glenn and Lou could tell how important this repair was to me, and they gave it the same attention as a major renovation. It is amazing how cheap it can be to fix/maintain things instead of buy new ones. Take some digital pics and bring to the store and tell the crew to give you whatever you need to tackle the project. Be sure to rent tools from them too, so easy and cheap! They will even deliver the equipment to your house for you. Get Benjamin Moore paints from them too, good stuff lasts longer than junk and requires fewer coats...your time is valuable!
