At one time, many years ago, this was the nicest and best maintained course in the Paso area. Unfortunately it has been in a downward spiral for the last six or more years, and exceedingly so for the last three. The greens have always been good, and the bunkers were renovated not too long ago and are quite nice. The rest of the course seems to have been forgotten. The uneven and chewed up tee boxes only give way to the patchy fairways. The day I last played the fairway mower was not adjusted correctly so there were different grass heights across the fairways where it had been. And anywhere off the first cut of rough is nothing but hardpan dirt and gopher holes, if you can find your ball. The course layout is basically two different courses. The front is nice, scenic, and very fair. The back is goofy golf for half of the holes. The food and drink in the restaurant if good and slightly better than most courses. The biggest drawback to the whole experience is the price they charge for what they call the nicest course in the area. There is so much local golf on courses that are cheaper and maintained better than Hunter. I know I'll play here again but I will keep my expectations low. read more

This golf course is beautiful as it is challenging with the greens kept in super condition. Why only 3 stars? At $100/person, I didn't like the Marshall hassling our cart to speed up play when we had to wait for the cart ahead of us to finish. Could the Marshall not see that we were waiting for the cart ahead of us? My conclusion is that the Marshall is biased and harrassed us because we were female AND non-white which ruined my time of playing golf. Things are slow? Talk to the guys who were ahead of us. I feel we are very fortunate to have a course of this quality in the area. I have lived in Paso for a little over a year and Hunter Ranch is now my home course. I used to play it occasionally on trips to visit friends in the area. Getting to know the course has increased my love for it. Some courses you get tired of if you play them a lot. Not Hunter Ranch, you grow to appreciate it more and use that course knowledge to improve your scores. As for the course itself, the two nines may look similar but are actually very different. The front nine is wider and more open and the greens are well protected. Try to bomb your drives and hit accurate irons into the greens. The back nine is more difficult and your drives need to be more accurate. There are water hazards on six of the nine holes that can all come into play. Decision making and course management make this nine a real mental test. The course is generally in real good conditions and the greens can be lightning fast. There are good practice facilities as well. A large driving range, a 3 hole short course (all around 75 yards) to allow you to really work on the wedges, a chipping area and 2 putting greens. The pro shop is nice, with a good selection of clothing, golf balls, etc. They do not sell golf clubs though. There is a wonderful restaurant, which I will review separately. The staff is terrific, friendly and helpful. The pro, Mike, is an excellent instructor. I have taking some lessons and recommend him highly. The lesson rates are much less than I paid in Portland and Atlanta. read more

Let's be completely honest here, one would expect a lot more from this golf course seeing as though non-member patrons (read: out-of-towners) are expected to fork over a lofty $100 weekend green fee. Had it not been for the LiveCard Discount Vouchers from Costco, we would probably never even have considered gracing this course with our presence. Case in point, from the moment my foursome and I arrived at this establishment after a two-hour trek from whence we came, we were greeted by THE RUDEST pro shop staff one should ever have to meet in their entire golf career. One of our players had to book a separate tee time online, on account of not having the aforementioned Costco Voucher. The lady at the counter was adamant on charging him the full-priced green fee after it had been explicitly established at the beginning of the transaction that he had in fact booked online for the reduced online rate. It was a good thing the other pro shop attendant was there to quickly remind her that he had in fact booked online. When asked if there was a Military Discount, this same lady smugly replied, "No, but we can throw in a bucket of balls." Ironically, we find out after the fact that our player was actually charged for the supposedly "free" bucket of range balls. A nominal fee, yes, but it's the principle dammit! Also worth mentioning is that the entryway into this course from HWY 46 is not what one might consider your typical premium golf course entrance (i.e. rock fascias, maybe a fountain), but what one might see at a cattle ranch. Yes, we realize that this course is named Hunter RANCH, but a little bit of exterior aesthetics goes a long way to set the tone and one's first impression of this place. One might completely miss the entrance to this establishment had you not been looking for it. In fact a few of us have driven this road on the way to the coast before, not even noticing this golf course ever existed. Which brings me to my next point: SIGNAGE. This place could use a FEW SIGNS to steer (see what I did there, ranch hands) someone who has never played here before in the correct direction throughout this golf course. There were several instances during our round where we legitimately got lost and could not figure out how to get to the next hole. Hell, we couldn't even find hole number 1 due to LACK OF SIGNAGE. Holes 10 and 17 were clearly identified, but that's as far as they went. (Not sure if that even warrants a golf clap.) Prior to our round, we managed to spend some time at their driving range. I'll have to say, this is probably one of the better practice facilities out there. You get pristine short game practice area(s), and the main all-grass driving range is nothing to complain about either. The practice bunker however was completely water-saturated and you can pretty much forget about practicing for a sandy par save. The loudspeaker was even audible from the driving range and we could clearly hear them calling out groups to the number one tee box. However, when it was time for our round our foursome was never called up. We had to physically check with the pro shop to see if we could start our round. We find out (AGAIN, RUDELY) that we are free to begin on the number one tee. Round underway, we were left wondering, "Where was the on-course cart service?" My foursome and I saw the cart girl maybe once at the very beginning of our round, but even then, didn't really acknowledge if we needed anything. The rest of the round, she was NOWHERE to be found. Absolutely terrible service! On to the positives. The fairways were in excellent condition. Greens are fast-paced and true. Bunkers have excellent sand. The rough was typically challenging. We all had complaints with areas just off the FW that could have been cared for better (i.e. rocks, weeds, hard pan, read: shit lies). Tee boxes are a little chewed up and somewhat sloping on certain holes but overall decent at best. The golf carts seemed to be in good repair/operation. It would have been nice for them to include ice in the ice buckets and perhaps a couple of free water bottles on such a hot day, but I guess we might be spoiled by our "non-premium" courses back home that DO include that. The restaurant has great Kobe Burgers, and the wait staff, for the most part, was attentive to our needs (One shouldn't have to ask for ketchup! We were eating burgers!) In conclusion, this is a really good course, but for the price one would have to pay, and the travel time to get out here you would really expect a lot more for bang for your buck. Weather-wise you're nowhere near getting coast weather. ( IT WAS FRIGGIN HOT TODAY! Thank GOD for the gale-force breeze on the back 9!) Lastly, the pro shop really needs to check their attitude if they want to attract more customers, That said, it would honestly take an act of God (or maybe even a free round) to convince me to come back out here with my hard-earned $$$. read more

I guess we had a different experience than S. Steve. We discovered Hunter Ranch after we played La Purisma in Lompoc. (which is very tough) Hunter Ranch is a well kept course, and yes there were holes from the ground squirrels, but not so it was distracting to us. We enjoyed the course, and it provided some challenges to our games. Too, the club house had some great food and very nice wines. We plan to return next year. read more

Beautiful course that appears to be well maintained. We were given tokens to get some range balls to warm up before our tee time, and they had no problem with us booking back to back tee times so we could have a 5-some. I'm not going to lie, I got pretty hammered while we were playing so I don't remember much about the course or my golf game this day, but I knew I had a great time lol minus the ass hole who said to us "really, you're not going to let me play through" as we were waiting for the group infront of us to finish. Is it worth the $100+ with a cart? That's debatable, but overall, I'd come back again and play if I'm in the area... read more

Whoa hold your horses cowboy. I am shocked reading the bad reviews. A little reality check people. This is a $100 golf course in Paso Robles, not a $300 golf course in Napa Valley! I paid $51 because I have friend who is member, but I'm not splitting hairways here! This course is beautiful - It's surrounded by massive oaks and vineyards. Excellent fairways, slick greens, elevation changes and some downright fun holes. I'll take this course any day over the hundreds of So. Cal golf courses lined with cookie cutter stucco homes. I would much rather see Robert Hall picking grapes than Joe Buttcrack picking up the Sunday newspaper. Yeah, squirrels holes might swallow your golf ball if you can't keep it within a respectable distance from the fairway. But expect that, it a freaking golf course in Paso surrounded by vineyards - love it for what it is. BTW - the grapes being grown in the hills surrounding Hunter Ranch is some of the best in California. Zin Golf, I tell ya. The girls in the restaurant are great too. They will talk your ear off about wine and serve up good food. No complaints here! read more

Ordinarily if I get stuck with a slow round I will never return to a course. But I played on New Year's Day here and only had time for nine holes. Granted it took almost three hours but it was coming off a frost delay on a busy day. But what a 9 holes. Design of this track challenges every golfer with trees, gullies, ponds, fast greens, doglegs and hills. They started us on the back nine and I was fortunate enough to pair with a couple locals. On the back for the first few holes do not pull out the driver. We played from the whites. The two par 5s proved the most challenging on the back. The 13th is a dogleg right where if you get a good drive it will roll down a hill to a flat spot about 220 to 230 yards out. Of course, we all want to be big hitters and get on in 2. Bad choice. There's a pond on the right paralleling the hole. So if you fade your second shot you are in the drink, which I did. Hitting 4 sailed it right and OB, take drop on in 6 and two-putt for the shameful ocho. The other ass-kick par 5 on the back is 17. It's a slight dogleg right then uphill, playing like 600 with a ravine about 150 yards out. Of course the pin was up on top of the second tier. Just a lot of fun. Will return to play the whole place. On a holiday walking it was $65. For the serious golfer. Whites had a slope of 131. read more

Did not play golf here (a little out of my price range), but did have lunch. It was a beautiful central coast day, so we decided to eat on the deck overlooking the ninth green. With the surrounding vineyards covering the rolling hills it made for a wonderful and relaxing setting. Food was great - I had the BLT (excellent thick cut bacon) and my wife had the Oriental Salad. Beer and wine selections are plentiful with many craft brews and local wines. I would have rated it higher, but the food service was rather slow. I was "forced" to order a second beer before the food arrived. Yet, despite that, I would return, if for no other reason than the setting. read more

This is now in my top 5 favorite golf courses. Came here for a guys golf trip on 4/10, 8 guys, 10:50 tee time. Practice range is wide open and large, practive greens run as fast as the greens on the course, and the conditions were an A+. The layout is perfect, easy(ish) and wide open opening holes, gradually narrowing with lots of tree's when you get to the back 9. The 2 finishing holes go back to an open layout. The greens are AMAZING, FAST, PERFECT. This is not a golf course for the 25 handicap however, the back 9 will eat your lunch. Speaking of, the food and service were fantastc, the carts are new, clean and run perfect. Honestly, a great course for a great value. We will be back. read more

Pros: Good looking course. Nice greens and fairways. Beautiful settings of vineyards and wine country. Medium degree of difficulty. (coming from a 8 Handy cap) They have a fun 3 hole practice course that is great to teach new golfers the game. Each hole is under 100 yards and it is free Cons: Pro shop staff are not good at customer service. ( lets just put it that way). Green fees are way to expensive for paso robles. It is a nice course but almost a 100 bucks for a round is way to much. No student rates. Sidenote: Again nice course and worth playing if you have extra $$$. One thing I dont think is fair about some of the other reviews is that people complain about golpher and squirle holes. I would just remind them that this course is right in the middle of 1000's of acres of vineyards and not sky rise buildings and those rodents are apart of the setting and are impossible to control around farm land. $50 on line tee time special. this course is a well kept and tough course. The greens were well manicured and FAST. The course has plenty of nice restrooms and water well scattered so you can fill up with h2o. Green grass everywhere which was really nice. Just be careful and try not to run a squirrel over cause they are everywhere. Also gas powered carts with coolers on them to keep the beers cold. read more

We played as a foursome. They started us on the back nine. Hadn't played this course recently and due to a lack of signage were frequently lost. Many of the tee boxes lacked hole numbers. The cart paths were largely unpaved and similar to the maintenance roads. The front nine was better. more directional signs would help! read more

Enjoyed another delicious breakfast at the Hunter ranch restaurant. We were greeted as we entered and taken to a table overlooking the spacious golf course. Summer brought our drinks immediately and then returned for our order. The plate presentation was exceptional,omelette,fresh fruit, muffin complimented by peanut butter. Sabrina took over our table when summer took break and refilled drinks and made sure we needed nothing. Good job ladies!! read more

NO DOUBT FIVE STARS..! found a great deal for this course that i couldnt pass up and im glad i didnt.. parking is covered so your vehicle isnt baking in the Paso heat.. the pro shop is stocked and the gentlemen working were friendly and welcoming.. the course is in top notch shape THANK YOU GROUNDSKEEPERS.. YOU ARE THE REAL MVP'S.. the views are perfect, the greens were smooth and challenging but they wont keep you from making awesome putts when you choose the right line.. fairways were in great shape when i hit one and the bunkers are pretty deep with soft sand but *be very careful using the rakes i had fiberglass stuck in my hand for 15 holes and wasnt fun to deal with* i definetly recommend this course if you have the chance cuz i know im going back.. This is a great coarse and got progressively more challenging hole by hole. The par threes on the back nine where some of the hardest I have ever seen. Greens were fast and clean, it was great not having to pick up leaves and twigs to clean my line. Really the only reason I give this 4 stars was because it was very difficult to find the next hole. The direction was rarely marked on witch way to go. Let alone the paths themselves sometimes just disappear. If there were a foursome behind us we would've kept them up. But we came on a Monday and the gas powered carts were KICK ASS!! If in the area and want to play golf I recommend this coarse. They also have great twilight specials! read more

I'm going to make this short and sweet. A round of golf was my birthday present and we went there on my birthday. Great front office staff and even the people just sitting around were really nice. It was a sweltering 100+ day and that is beyond their control and I know that. But they didn't have a beverage cart roaming around... Why not? I know it was a Monday, but think about your patrons who spent their money to sweat their asses off that day please. It was a beautifully kept course embedded into a neighboring vineyard, with squirrels and rabbits running about. If it were 70-85 degrees, I would love to go back. The only reason I left the 1 star off was for the lack of caring on such a hot day to get the beverage cart rolling. Oh and bring your long ball game if you want to finish with a decent score! Oh and the grill.... Be sure to set aside a solid hour to get anything. We waited for our bill for about 25 minutes alone. GREAT food though! read more

Pros: Fast and smooth greens. Consistant sand depth and saturation in the bunkers. Pretty well maintained course. Couple of nice signature holes with vineyards in the backdrop. Interesting back 9 layout with water in play. Great practice area. Friendlyl staff though there should have been more of a presence with the marshalls. Cons: Course is short even from the tips. Front 9 very muni-ish. There are lots of waste areas near Oaktrees which divide the fairways that are not as penal as they should be if you miss these large fairways. Marshall needs to step up. I was grouped with 2 local dolts at a 7am tee time. After 2 holes of watching them lose a couple balls, take about 20 practice swings per shot, and socialize on the tee boxes, i politely excused myself citing a phantom flight i had to catch. I felt horrible for the foursome behind the 2 idiots as I heard that foursome on the practice greens talking about $10/skins so i knew they were serious players. I ended up catching up to a very nice father / son group at the 9th hole and had a great time. Looking back at the 18th tee box, i saw down the par 5 17th hole the twosome never let the serous foresome through. poor guys standing there tapping their feet... Misc: Appeared to be a great restaurant with lots of patrsons. Overall, the course is a bit too ordinary to offset the $80 green fees ($100 to ride). Next time I visit Paso, I would consider driving further towards SLO to play come coastal courses than staying in town. read more

Played this the day after playing Monarch Dunes in Nipomo. Wife and friend preferred Monarch Dunes. I liked this one. Very good course. Nice scenery (hills and vineyards). Great maintenance. Fast pace of play on a Saturday morning. Beautiful clubhouse and restaurant. Definitely preferred the front nine to the back. Front was pretty straight forward -- could tell where to go and what to hit from just about every tee box. Back nine was more tricked up -- a few forced carries, a few holes that I would call target golf. I don't shell out $100 often for a round, but I would to play this one again. read more

Course was in great shape. Got the first tee time (at 7am) and only saw a handful of other golfers out on the course. Course has some "tricky holes" so it is best to play with someone who has played there before to tell you where NOT to hit it. JOIN THEIR E-CLUB SPECIALS online. This course is actually pretty nice and well maintained however the staff in the pro shop, particularly Greg, are worthless. My group of 5 had a $20 dispute over our $400+ tab. Greg was obstinate and petty, refusing to even listen to our point. I couldn't care less about the 20 bucks but don't be an asshole to 5 reasonable paying customers. I will never return and I suggest others stay away as well until Greg finds a job he's more qualified for than customer service, perhaps something in the janitorial field. read more

I play this course several times a year. Three times in the summer and twice during Thanksgiving holidays. It is a well kept course they definitely keep the fairways and greens watered well because it can get hot and dry in the summer time. During the week its pretty easy to get a tee time. I really enjoy the layout of the course. The driving range is great with a excellent area for your short game. In fact it is one of the best I have ever seen for the short game. The main restaurant is good as well for lunch after the first 9 holes. Some holes can be a challenge so bring some extra balls. read more

Played this course on a saturday and was very disappointed from the service to the golf course. Did you see the beautiful HUNTER RANCH GOLF COURSE sign at the entry? A sign of things to come. Day started badly right from check in. People in the pro shop were snobbish, very surprised. Overcharge on green fee for a Saturday. Asked if there was a military discount...NOPE. Lady said she will give us balls to hit instead then goes on to charge $4 additional. Guy in pro shop didn't call out tee time for our group. Had to go inside to ask. Greens and bunkers were good but too many gopher holes everywhere (off fairway). Should really do a better job pulling those weeds around the trees from just off the green and fairways. Cart paths not complete. Some cart paths roped off for some reason. Lots of dirt cart paths. Not many signs offering direction of where to go. I just cannot believe the hype this place gets. For $100 on Saturday I expected a premium golf course and better hospitality. I cannot justify driving 1.5 to 2 hours unless it exceeded my expectations. You don't get what you pay for on this course. Hunter, please have an ounce of respect for our men and women in service. A military discount goes along way. This is hands down NOT the best place to play. For the money go out and play Stevinson Ranch. You won't regret it. read more

we came from Monterrey to play this course on a Thursday and expected to find a world class golf course, or what we though was the best course on the central coast. what we found was a course that seem to have run out of money while building it, and has no ideal of what a world class golf course should be. the fairways and greens are well kept, but the rough is a joke with dirt and gopher holes. the trees on numerous fairways block a great tee shot to the pins, and flag placements are diabolical at times hidden from view and impossible to get close to at times. I don't consider having gopher holes and dirt 8ft off the greens as world class on a par 4. the sand was firm and had pebbles in it, very poor I thought. and over 1/2 the cart paths were dirt and dusty, this on a hot day was very annoying. there carts are older gas powered carts and a bit noisy. the holes with the blind tee shots that have trees in them rewards local knowledge as a slice may have been a better shot. never saw a cart girl all day and it was 95deg not to mention we finished our round at 4:30pm and the clubhouse was closed, they said not many people play there on weekdays and so they close early, what? the driving range only had 3 flags to hit to and 2 had fallen down, it could have been way better with more choices to hit to guys.I had to laugh too as the whole round the farmer next to the course was shooting ground squirrels on his ATV and you could hear and see him all day,lol also the freeway is right there and the road noise and cars honking or yelling FORE, it was funny. a world class golf course this isn't and I can see what they were trying to go for, but there missing a few of the pieces. I bet I could spend one month on this course and make a lot these changes happen and bring it more up to par. and yet its been open for awhile now, I'm not mad, I just expected a lot more from the pics I saw on line and reviews that everyone puts up. as my partner said this course is the best advertised course ever and has creative advertising for sure. I wish them the best in the future. by the way guys you should update your web site too, it's tacky to click on things only to see its not available at this time like your rates for one. on an upside the town has some good places to eat. read more

Just played 3 rounds in 3 days. Great layout and was in solid condition. Would definitely recommend. It's not pebble beach, but I was not expecting pebble. Quick greens, wide fairways and just a solid layout. Good service at snack bar. Good food at restaurant. read more

Great breakfast! Server was awesome. Very nice golf course. Greens were in excellent shape. Considering the california drought conditions the fairways were better than expected. Nice pro shop. Very friendly staff. Only issue was pace of play. We caught a fivesome on the 13th. Took them over 20 minutes to play the 14th hole. We get to the 15 th tee and they are just hitting their second shots. They made no offer to allow us to play thru. We skipped the 15th hole and went to 16. No one was in front of them. When we finished 18 they had just teed off on 17. Why do courses allow fivesomes on the course? We never saw a marshall/player assistant all day. Without the fivesome this would have been a five star experience! read more

Just played there over the Weekend , had the Sunday Brunch before going to play. Food was very good, service was a little slow. We had a 2:00 tee time, and it was very warm. When we called in asking about the beverage cart. We were told several holes into the game that there was not going to be one that day. And I was told , in a rather rude tone. That I should had got something to drink before teeing off. Well maybe if we had been informed that there was not going to be a beverage cart, on this busy Holiday Weekend, we would have got beverages before leaving the clubhouse. And had I known that I was going to be spoken to that way, I probably would have chosen one of the other 100 or so coarses on the Central Coast. I think when you drive 2 hours, and pay good money to golf, you expect a lil respect. read more

Spring Break golfing with my buddy Robert at Hunter Ranch. This was my first time to play this course. We had an 8:30am tee time which was perfect. The place was empty. The guy in the clubhouse was extremely friendly and helpful. The greens were FAST...plus with the slope...nearly unmakeable. The fairways were great. The sand trap actually have sand (in Bako...not the case). The actual course was a challenge. We aren't use to the downhill/uphill lays, but who cares...the layout is BEAUTIFUL!! There are so many challenging holes, especially for a first timer. After the round, we had lunch and decided we are definitely coming back. This is one of the best places I have played. The only problem was the cost: $87/person plus the really expensive items at the grill. Other than that...I'm a Fan. read more

I went to this restaurant in May because, it was my 60th birthday! My kids took me for the breakfast buffet. I must say it was very good! There was such a variety! Every bit of it was wonderful! The desserts were really good! I consider it a little pricey but, if you're going there for your birthday, and it's your 60th, well I guess it's just fine! My compliments to the chef!
