Good Chinese food is hard to find in Geneva. Good Cantonese food is even harder to find. I was walking along the pier when I saw the sign for this restaurant. Immediately after reading the name I knew it has a Cantonese ring to it. Here's my review and comments on the dishes I ordered:
1) Congee with fishmeat balls: BEST bang for the buck. Having been overpaying for medicore Chinese food in the past weeks, I had to do a double take on the price per bowl (and it's a BIG bowl). The seasoning of the congee is near perfect! Very close to the ones I've had at Maxim on Hong Kong Island. If the chef would boil the rice with dried scallops, I think it would be the best congee in Europe! (Receipe very close to the famous congee stand on HK Island).
2) Fried dough for the congee - it was cold...(points deducted)
3) BBQ Pork was good. Need a lil bit more honey for sweetness, also to make the sauce stick to the meat better. Very close to authentic southern cha xiu.
4) Steamed shrimp in white wrap (Ha Cheung): The skin they used to wrap the shrimp was not cooked completely. Some of the shrimp stuck to the base of the roll. Also, the base of the roll was powdery in some areas. Other than that, the cooked ones were perfect. (points deducted)
5)Chicken feet in XO Sauce: Perfect! Big lumps of dried scallops from the XO sauce.
6)Cow stomach with sweet peppery sauce: Perfect. Not chewy, not soggy. Right on with the flavor.
7-8)Shrimp n chives dumplings: They had two types. One with the clear skin and the other with regular dumpling skins. I ordered the steamed one with the clear skin (normally that's pan fried), and the normal dumpling skin that's pan fried. The flavor is the same, just the texture is different. I, personally, prefer the clear skin wrapping. No points deducted since it's personal preference.
9)Steamed fishmeat balls: Good, but I should've ordered the beef since I already had fishmeat balls in my congee. Next time.
Overall, great dim sum place. Very friendly staff (it helps that I know Cantonese). They also speak English and French, so don't shy away. For the price I paid, it's great value for the quality. The next best thing is probably a Hong Kong place up in Lausanne that's over an hour away. For Geneva Hung Wan is ranked at the top so far. read more
