I've been ordering Chinese food from here for many years. By far the best Chinese in Naugatuck.

I was so pleasantly surprised from our first visit at Sakana that I had to make a return trip later…read morethe same week. It was a humble reminder that you don't need to go to a culinary destination to find good food. Cheshire Connecticut may not be known for its food scene, however, I found Sakana was a genuine diamond in the rough. My expectations were admittedly low going in. My level of skepticism is always high when I see the "Asian Bistro" moniker, as it is frequently used for restaurants to try to appeal to the masses at the expense of quality by having a "jack-of-all-trades" menu that lacks the technical intricacies and mastery required for specific dishes. Additionally, these establishments tend to follow a "cookie-cutter" menu and offer the same boring dishes you can find at every other Asian Bistro. Even when initially walking towards the restaurant, I had my doubts. The exterior of Sakana honestly looked more like a clinic than a restaurant. Once I saw the menu however, my skepticism shifted towards optimism. For a local bistro, they feature a surprisingly extensive wine and cocktail menu, including premium sake options. I was particularly impressed to find toro on the menu; although it's undoubtedly becoming more of a trend in Connecticut, I was nevertheless happy to see it offered at Sakana as well. Overall I liked their sushi selections and everything I ordered was well-prepared and tasted fresh. We ordered a chicken and broccoli for our daughter and found the chicken tender and broccoli perfectly cooked. That may not sound impressive to those reading, but you'll be surprised how many restaurants fail to execute this baseline dish correctly. The service, although pleasant, was probably the only "weak link" of our experiences here. The quality of service was noticeably inconsistent between our two visits, and they would benefit vastly from having a more reliable and experienced front-of-house team to match the execution coming from the kitchen and sushi bar. Despite this minor gripe, Sakana was a standout. As long as I'm in the area, they will definitely be among the top of my list of places to eat!

So friendly. Is the food exceptional? To me no, but my parents enjoy it. Tonight we started with crab rangoons. Pretty good. Sauce on the side not very exciting. A chili sauce would be better. I got a sushi roll with White tuna inside and cooked shrimp on top and wasabi mayo. I forget the name of the roll but it was better than the two times I've ordered takeout. Miso soup was also good. Their soup bowls are in the shape of a heart which is super cute. Dad got some sort of a mixed protein dish with brown sauce (had shrimp, chicken and beef). Mom got the chicken and garlic sauce. They both got fried rice on the side. I tried it and it was very bland. Dad also got a salad with his meal and the ginger dressing was not very good. Red coloring to it. Usually ginger dressing is more on the orange side. Dad also got the Malaysian chicken coconut soup to start and it could use a bit more flavor. Was a bit watery. Mom loved her sweet and sour soup. Nice that this place is 5 minutes away. Cheshire needs more restaurants. Def not my fav restaurant in town though. Food to me is just ok.

They take just as much care packing a take out as they would a dish it seems. I have had items from the japanese menu and the chinese menu and the food is just great, and Im pretty picky when it comes to sushi and sashimi! I actually go an hour out of my way to get take out from here when Im in the mood for good sushi. They pay attention to special requests, and ordering online is so easy and they always get it right. I like that I can check boxes for sushi and submit, and dont have to call in. My only nit pick might be that the rice ball for the sushi is a little too big. Sometimes awkwardly big. Oh, some of the best yellowtail around.

The vegetable spring roll was not great - very strange texture and not much taste. Ordered the…read morepork lo mein lunch special which was advertised with a choice of soups. I chose the hot and sour soup and was charged an additional dollar, even though that was clearly a side choice on the menu (no mention of any upcharge for that). There was also a choice between white rice or brown rice (with lo mein?) They filled the To Go container with rice and put the lo mein on less than half of the rest of the container. Overall, not great. Wouldn't recommend or go back.

I dont know what has happened to this place!!!! At first I thought they had gone out of business…read morebecause the last time I drove down Rubber ave it looked empty in there. I had to call to see if they were still there. So I came on here to check the reviews, which werent good at all...but I was like, how can a place go so downhill so fast?! Well I should have listened! I was absolutely heartbroken by what was deliver to our house for dinner tonight ! We use to love their food. Spent 90 bucks for food that I wouldnt give animals to eat! We ordered chicken wings...use to be nice whole wings that you could tell came from a Chinese Restaurant...now 8 little overcooked half wing! The pupu platter....utterly awful! The chicken nuggets were salty, overcooked and so tiny,...the scallops..prefrozen little round things...when you bit into them...so sticky and nasty. The beef on a stick was laughable!! A little ol piece of beef that was towards the bottom of the stick...spring rolls...so over cooked they were greasy and like mush in the middle... the flavor of the eggrolls terrible.. and I love eggrolls! Im really sad over this...now I dont know where to even get decent Chinese Food around here anymore. I tried what is it, BlueMoon? At first they seemed good...but the last few times...ugh...My son said that he'll have to find a Chinese girl that can cook for us....I think he might be right!

Proving that it's the company as much as the location, a recent visit to Chiangmai Thai Restaurant…read morein Naugatuck was absolutely delightful given the lovely service from our waitress. One got the sense that the other diners that evening felt much the same way. It was a weeknight, and with a lower customer load than might be the case on a Friday or weekend, she had ample time to spend with each party, regaling us all with fun conversation. It goes without saying that the company in one's own party makes a whale of a difference, and in that regards I could not have asked for better. This is to take nothing away from the food, which was absolutely delicious, flavorful and mercifully not too spicy - our aging gastrointestinal systems are sadly just not up for the violent torment from a chilli assault like when we were younger, and felt invincible. The mango rice dessert - enough for two to split - was sublime. And the town of Naugy itself - for both of us an unknown quantity til that evening despite having whizzed past it a ton on Route 8, hammering down the famous Naugahyde River Valley - is intriguing. Naugatuck offers gorgeous and fascinating architecture from the last two centuries at least, evidence of thriving mill-driven industry in years past, very easy access from the highway, and lots of close on-street parking, at least on a Thursday evening. BYOB if you are that way inclined, as they don't have a liquor license. Will we be back to Chiangmai Thai? Abso-frikkin-lutely. I've you've already been, then go back again, and soon. If you haven't had the pleasure, get moving now and thank me later.
