I grew up in Humboldt and loved coming to Humbrews since I was young, but the last experience I had there changed my whole perspective for the worst. Came in with some friends and ordered nachos and just about 2.5 chips had cheese on them. I work in customer service and I NEVER send back food but it seemed pretty extreme so I kindly asked if we could get a little more cheese (because it's nachos and nachos are cheese oriented). They said yes and a minute later brought out a COLD bowl of shredded cheese by the chips. I was blown away. After that when I said maybe it could be heated I was treated horribly by the waitress and by the bartender. Legitmately the worst service I've ever got after literally years of going there. I probably will never go back because of this. Such a shame. The owners need to be regulating who they are hiring much better because you just lost many locals business because of the way your employees treat people. The food was pretty good and the beer was cold. However, they really nickel and dime you here. My partner and I didn't know which beer to get so we asked for a taster. To try a beer it was 1.50-2.00 for one oz of beer. They also charged extra for an extra small side of salad dressing. If you want to go here, please make sure you ask what is going to be charged. Visiting the lovely Humboldt gem of Arcata, we tucked into Humboldt Brews for a Friday night brew and burger. Got a table when it was very busy, and had a lovely very-pregnant waitress. When it wasn't screaming busy, the service was pretty good. But as the night wore on, the place was understaffed, and orders were slow or forgotten. The beer list was *ok* but not *terrific*. I drank Anchor Steam all night, which is a reliable standby. I was hoping for a wall of North Coast brews, but that just wasn't the case. The food was pretty good and overall it was a good dinner. Stick to the great Humboldt grass fed beef burgers or tasty hot wings if you hit up this place. I ventured off the path and ordered fried pickles which were a surprise once they were served. The fried pickles are huge dill pickles that are cut into 4 large spears, battered, and fried. Incredibly difficult to eat because the batter slips off the spear. Also, the fried batter tasted fishy (like the oil was getting old/dirty). Chicken strips and pub fries were my main dish. You get 3 smallish sized chicken pieces over a large bed of fries. The chicken was breast meat but incredibly dry. The fries were limp but hot and fresh. The basket is served with ranch and BBQ sauce; the sauce is sweet n tangy but very watered down. Our bill was $38 (my son had a great Franklin burger!) so I used 3 $10 gift certificates to pay but when Robin, our server (& also the owner), ran my debit card, she made a mistake. She thought there were only 2 gift certificates and ran my card for an incorrect amount. The gift certificates are cardboard and very distinct but mistakes happen. Humboldt brews not only has amazing food but also outstanding customer service! While waiting for my pickup order I'm pretty sure everyone working asked if I had been helped, was extremely friendly and even offered me a drink while I waited because it was talking a little longer than expected. Which might I add was only a couple minutes! One of the kitchen staff was grabbing some water and even went out of his way to kindly ask if I had everything I needed before leaving. It's my first time in Humboldt and I was really excited to try this place because I heard great things since my girlfriend used to live here a few years back. All I can say is that we were seated and waited for about 30 minutes and NO ONE came over to take our order. I saw other parties come in after us and their drink and food orders were already coming out. I don't know if it was just the bad service or if we were treated like that because we are outsiders and not locals, but I will never give my business to a restaurant that runs like this. We went with a party of 8 for drinks and dinner. The service was extremely slow. We waited over an hour for our food. Never once did the waitress apologize for the wait. Ambiance - 4/5 Stars I love it here. It's fun, it's lively. It's not where I would go to have a deep heart to heart conversation, but that's not what breweries are for. If I'm somewhere with live music, I WANT to have to shout across the table. There's also a bar a pool table for those who actually want to DO something. Food - 5 Stars Everything I've had here is great. Frankly the best burger in town, and one of the best burgers I've ever had anywhere. The BBQ sauce is great and should be bottled for resale. Too bad they charge $1 for a side of it! Price - 3 Stars It's not terrible considering the quality of food, it's what you would expect to pay at a brewery. Its reasonable but they should really consider a lunch menu and a happy hour. I mostly like going here because of the pool table, I'm not much of a beer drinker and I have not gotten hooked to any dish yet. I mostly feel like their dishes are plain but I like that they have sweet potato fries, plus in my book. They do offer a few veg dishes but can do better in adding vegetables to dishes. There are still some dishes I would like to try so we'll see if that changes anything. I think the last time I ordered the swiss mushroom burger and that is what I got, no garnishes except for a pickle and some weird sauce: no tomatoes, onion, lettuce, mayo, mustard. I wasn't sure if that was not added on the menu because it is a given in a burger or if I should ask for it on the side. Although none of the burgers had any of these vegs nor were they an option for add-ons. I just tried to enjoy the burger with the pickle and ate about half of it there and took the rest home. They were out of all local breweries beer on tap. However, if you're going to advertise yourself as a taphouse it would make a lot of sense to carry a diverse offering. Per my dinner companion "If you're going to be a taphouse you'd better be known for your beer instead of your food." The food had no taste was very bland - fish & chips, wings, salad etc. Take the time to visit the local breweries instead. Ultimately, the beer we did get to try was delicious. read more

I can't speak for the food, but if you find a concert here from a band you like GO SEE IT. The venue is tiny and intimate, and they don't oversell attendance so you can get right up to the stage. I was so close to Kyle Gass, Tim Reynolds, That1Guy, and more I could reach out and touch them if I wanted. It's like seeing big stars perform in a coffee shop (as far as size goes, no ambiance... this is a bar). They don't have hard liquor, only beer and wine, etc. It's not really a brewery, it's a fake brewery. Years ago, Humboldt Brewery was here, before they betrayed their local roots, moved down south, and kept the "Humboldt" name that helped them get so popular. They closed for a few years, and Humboldt Brews--or "Humbrews," as the locals call it--opened up. Again, this is a great venue. I'm not really that keen on it as a place to get a beer unless I'm already attending a show because the prices are a little high, the regulars a bit too hipster, and the selection of brews a little poor. It's also often very crowded, and they'll serve the regulars over and over before you even get your first beer unless you're really agressive about getting service. Still, I'm giving it five stars because its merits as a venue make up for any and all shortcomings as a brewpub. read more

Only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because they do not get pay-per-view games/fights, which I think would be a lot of fun at this location. Simply: The service, average bar food, and repeatedly undercooked meat made me boycott this place. Great tap selection, so I only drink here, no food for me. More: Notorious for bad service, just ask anyone in town. I have a handful of stories. One I will share, I was on a date and our waiter brought us the wrong food (not surprising as this fellow is consistently spaced out) and upon informing him of his mistake he blurted out the F word in front of my date. Rude. The waitstaff act like its a chore to take your order or do their job that they get paid and tipped for. The food, again, is good but average and overpriced. Don't get the torta, it sounds great on the menu but I've had it 3 times ordered medium and it comes out redder than raw. These events have led me to boycott their food for over a year now. Had a hamburger for lunch at Humbrews on Feb. 21. Ordinarily they are excellent. A straightforward burger with good quality meat and any additions you might desire. Unfortunately this time the chef added lots of herbs and onion to the meat, so it ended up tasting more like a meatball than a burger...plus too salty. Haven't actually had the food, I'd just been there for drinks/pool/shows. Beers are fine, they always have a decent selection. Pool's fun, although the placement of the table is a bit odd and I'm always concerned that I'm going to hit a nearby diner with the cue. The music venue was awful - I've avoided going to shows there since then. They pack way too many people into the room, the acoustics sound funky and it's overall really uncomfortable. We left halfway through one of my favorite band's shows, it was that bad. Also, the floor's oddly sticky. read more

Great food with local ingredients and cold beer, what more could you ask for? The burgers are especially tasty with local grassfed beef and cooked to perfection every time I order! Even the tortilla chips are local and they have the best wing sauce in town. (If you like wings, stop in on a Wed for super cheap and yummy wings!) Of course I'm a harsh judge of service having been front and back of the house for 15 years and I have to say that here the service is friendly and they always keep my glass full. They are always busy, but they have never forgotten about me even when we're a large group and have been consistently nice. I also love going for dinner and a show. HumBrews has a fantastic venue and books all kinds of music from traveling acoustic bluegrass to big name Bay Area artists, to reggae, to funk, to country. I don't care what people say about this place, but I love it. I love ordering a pound of hot wings, ordering a beer, and watching whatever game is on their many TV's. I also very much enjoy the Wing-Dinger Burger which consists of Blue Cheese and Wing Sauce. If your looking for a good appetizer the Nachos are perfect, but so are all the others except fried pickles. The service can be a bit spotty at times but it's never been a horrible problem. Deep fired pickles? Yes please. The menu is pretty darn wonderful when you have a comfort food craving. Bar food you'll want over and over again. I mean, they have deep fried pickles. Where can you go wrong? Hamburgers, wings, onion rings....deep fried pickles. And lets not forget the micro brews from heaven. Everything is pretty darn good. Have I mentioned the deep fried pickles? Only complaint? Hummus should not be neon orange. It really shouldn't be.
