    Enjoying the John Barleycorn beer!
    Alden C.

Mad River was one of the breweries we went to while on a recent trip to California. The location isn't in Eureka where we stayed but it's still a pretty short and manageable drive from there to Blue Lake. The beer I found to be enjoyable and satisfying. I got a barleywine beer, a beer style I don't often get called John Barleycorn. Flavor notes in this were caramel, brown sugar, a breadiness and a booziness to it. I liked it quite a bit! Their other beers looked promising and most of their flagship beers were on tap but I went with the barleywine beer since it looked just a bit harder to come by!

My wife, two dogs, and I stopped by for lunch. The location is off the 101 a few minutes and worth the detour. We have been burnt out on typical brewery food so to find a nice bbq spread was appealing. The beers were great. Started off with a sampler and had a pint from our favorites. Their beers weren't as hop heavy as most west coast beers have been which is refreshing. Service was friendly. The food is provided by a separate vendor and was amazing. Two of us shared the two meat platter (plus an extra side salad). The portions were generous, we had to bring a bunch home. Hard to decide if I liked the pulled chicken or brisket more. The place is dog friendly outside. Had a self serve dog station with water bowls and treats. Our pups were very happy.

Went earlier this afternoon for a quick weekend lunch. My partner and I ordered the Smash Burger, Fried Green Tomatoes (special item), a side of Smokey Mac n' Cheese, and Watermelon (special item) from the food place inside. We got two drinks from Mad River Brewery, a Huckleberry Seltzer and Tangerine Sour. Our total for everything was around $50, excluding tips. We waited about 20 minutes for food which was perfect since we had our drinks. Everything tasted great and were good portion sizes. I left off a star just because the overall experience was just OK. There were between 5-10 flies that wouldn't leave us alone and we were swatting them away the whole time we ate, but I know this isn't really controllable on the restaurant's end. The other slightly bothersome thing was that the buzzers they give you after you order make a loud, incessant beeping noise when your food is ready. It wouldn't have been too bad if it were just ours, but there were about 6 other parties there and we had to hear the loud beeping numerous times which cut into our conversation a bit. But, all things considered, I can deal with flies and beeping if it means good food, good drinks, and supporting local and Indigenous folks. I'm sure we'll be back!

This is a stop for us every time we come up to this part of the coast. In years past they always made a pretty good burger but their salads left something to be desired. But now they've raised the bar on their salads... so that 'upgrade' with their already great beers makes this my favorite brewery in the Humboldt Bay Area. Whenever I stop here I drink their UnionTown Porter (and I buy some to take home). What's great about Mad River is they always have a pretty good selection of porters and stouts to choose from. I am not a huge fan of IPA's and most breweries today) to my profound disappointment) lard up their selections with this style of beer. (And yes I meant to use the word 'lard' in lieu of 'load') On this particular visit they had a Coffee Porter that was great. I drank one there and have a Crowler in the RV fridge for taking home. Also ordered a barbecue salad: This was excellent and you pick any meat from the smoker for the topper. I ended up with a huge portion of tri-tip. It was tender and served over fresh greens, pickled onions, fresh cucumbers and I'm not sure what else because I was also drinking beer. Mad River did all the stuff a brewery should do: they served me great food and beer in a friendly setting with both some indoor and extensive outdoor seating. Beer, food, kids, dogs... these are good things. I'm happy!

We stopped by for a couple of ciders and picked up dinner to go. It was super packed, but worth it! Family friendly and great outdoor seating.

A Time Capsule of True Grit…read more Walking into The Logger felt like stepping back into an era when logging was more than just a job--it was a way of life. As a former log truck driver turned heavy hauler, I was instantly transported to the good old days, surrounded by the scent of wood and stories of hard-earned grit. The walls are adorned with black-and-white photos that date back to the 1960s and earlier, each one telling a story of a time when men and women alike knew what it meant to work with their hands. It's like the ghosts of the past are still hanging around, sharing a drink with you. The night I was there, a guy was strumming some live music, his dog chilling out on a barstool like he owned the place--another regular just enjoying the vibe. There's no pretension here, just authenticity that's rare to find these days. The Logger isn't just a bar; it's a living, breathing tribute to the logging world I once knew. Every visit reminds me that I was born in the wrong era, and that's what makes this place so damn special. If you've ever felt the call of the woods, or just want to experience a slice of real history, this is where you'll find it. Xo, ss.trucknbabe

What a gem. My wife and I were traveling to Mckinnleyville and came across this amazing eatery…read more At first we were drawn in my the vibe, just as wild as the lost coast. Inside did not disappoint, several different seating areas, all well decked out for different ambiance. Even though it was a packed Vakentines day, and we had no reservations were seated immediately, and the service seemed to be waiting for us. We sat at the huge, live edge red wood bar so we could enjoy the free live music, Angela and Co. killed it. The Valentines day prefix, lasagna with truffle salad and flour less cake looked amazing, but since we only had the one night, we decided on the food that put Papa Wheelies on the map. I had the basic burger, the Eel River Grass Feed beef burger, and it did not let me down. As soon as the beef hit the grill I could smell the quality. Perfectly prepared with sublime execution, just enough of all the right flavors. I can not recall ever having a better burger that I did not make myself. My wife had the Brie Burger that was voted best in Humboldt County, amd we found out why. Same grass fed beef, but cover in brie, chopped bacon and jalapeño pepper jelly. Perfectly seared, just enough pink for a flavor that exploded in your mouth. I have to mention here, that I hate messy burgers, that fall apart and get all over you. Well not at Papa Wheelies. Despite all those toppings is some how stayed together until the very last bite. We were pretty stuffed, but the band played on and the atmosphere was infectious. The menu had seemed sparce at first, but as I looked I relealized that it rambles all around the room, with hidden specials in every corner. In one we discovered the Poutine, made with real cheese curds and LOCAL mushroom gravy, amsntheirbf amousnhandncut fried, we just had to. In the end it was a bridge to far and we had to take most of it to go, but now I can't wait to eat it cold tomorrow. Papa Wheelies isn't just great food, good prices and great times, it is a serious piece of McKinnleyville society, from the localy made ingredients like apple cider vinegar syrup in their mock tails, the mushrooms, chicken and beef as well as the lemon ginger Kombocha, it is as much about their lo al community as it about friends getting together to relax and unwind.

I had been looking forward to visiting based on the positive reviews, but my experience yesterday…read moreevening fell far short of expectations. While the beer, decor, and patio atmosphere were genuinely enjoyable, the customer service was deeply troubling. I received an incorrect burger containing ingredients I am allergic to. When I brought this to the cashier's attention, she insisted I had ordered it that way and was reluctant to have it remade. Additionally, when our chicken wings were ready the cook pointed out they had no cheese -- an unnecessary comment, adding to an already frustrating evening. I noticed a clear difference in how my wife and I were treated. The cashier apologized to my wife -- but not to me. As a Black man dining with my white wife, the difference in treatment was unmistakable and made us feel unwelcome. No effort was made to make things right or invite us to return. We immediately paid our bill and left. I sincerely hope management addresses these service and conduct issues with staff.
