What can you make whiskey from that you've never considered before? Find out here! In addition to terrific spirits, their periodic "Kitchen Takeovers" are exceptional, bringing new tastes and flavors to the area!

Alchemy Distillery is a small, locally owned craft distillery in Arcata, CA. It is ONLY currently open to the public for tastings and tours - during some very select dates (During the Arts Arcata event - the 2nd Friday of each month). See the Alchemy Distillery web site for a list of upcoming dates for the Arts Arcata event and when they are open. Apparently - Alchemy Distillery will be opening a tasting room and have expanded hours - some time in 2020. I was in the area for vacation - and happened to be in town during Friday, August 9, 2019 - so I stopped in for the Arts Arcata event that evening. Alchemy Distillery is located in a sort of industrial looking warehouse style building. For the event, they unlocked the large chain link fence style gate and put a sign out - guiding folks to the event. I was looking forward to the tour. While I paid for my tasting of their new Bourbon release - I inquired about the tour - which was supposed to start at 7:00 pm. The gentleman pouring the Bourbon advised that the woman who was supposed to run the tour (I believe she is his wife) - was not feeling well - and would not be in attendance this evening to run the tour. Oh well - these things happen! Nothing you can do about it - but try again in the future. I looked around and took some photos. I only got to taste their new Bourbon. I think the new release could use some additional time aging in the barrel - it was somewhat harsh to my palate. And I really dig Bourbons! I really wanted to taste their Gin - but the event was so packed - and the one guy pouring was really busy - so I did not inquire about tasting anything else. I hope their plans for a tasting room and such come to fruition in 2020! #AlchemyDistillery

So I absolutely love their bourbon whiskey. It's locally made by two wonderful people. The bourbon is so smooth and hits the spot perfectly!

“I especially love that they attempt to be as close to a zero waste operation as possible, serving cocktails with reusable straws and giving their spent mash to local pig farms.”

We had a really lovely tasting flight and cocktails here! It's a small tasting room with a great…read moreselection, and we were helped by the owner who was very informative and friendly. There are regular hours during the summer, but it sounds like you make reservations at other times of the year.

I visited Jewell Distillery on a Saturday afternoon. I made sure that the folks here were going to…read morebe around before I showed up (I attempted to visit on a weekend two years ago - and there was no one at the distillery when I attempted to visit back then). I was greeted by the resident "Distillery Dog" - I forget her name, but she was a sweetheart German Shepherd. She barked up a storm until I opened the front door, then I got some snuggles in with her. I met Barbara Jewell - one of the owners. I introduced myself and stated I had sent them an e-mail a few weeks ago - she remembered and we went from there. Unfortunately, her husband Michael, who normally conducts the tours on Saturday afternoons - was not on-site and unavailable to conduct the tour. I was disappointed that I missed out on that part of their distillery experience. So I sat with Barbara at their tasting bar and had a nice conversation with her - and tasted three of their existing spirits: Big Buddha Citron Vodka, Jewell Gin, and a Blackberry liqueur. They also have a Moon Shine, but I skipped tasting that one. The Big Buddha is rather interesting - as they utilize "Buddha's Hand" citron - a citrus-esque plant - to flavor the vodka. Never seen that before! The Jewell Gin was also nice! Strong hints of licorice/Star Anise. I enjoyed tasting all three spirits! Barbara is an absolute hoot to hang out and chat with! I very much enjoyed my visit and tasting with her! #JewellDistillery
