The young lady beyond the counter on my first visit was very friendly and helpful, providing some lovely advice and tips for my trip (including for my proposed visit to her native area of England); if any manager/owner is reading, she gets major props! The gentleman who was working on my second trip was also friendly and helpful z but he was working on the back as well, so there was less interaction. Between my 2 visits, Zi tried a variety of pies, pasties, & rolls, all of which were very tasty (although there's something about a Greggs sausage roll; I'd stick to the pies and pasties here, and walk a couple of doors up the street for one of those.). These pies are a great light lunch or snack when consumed by themselves. Or one can get a variety of them and make it a meal. The pies are made fresh daily and displayed in the glass case at the counter along with other British style fried foods such as Tattie Dogs, Sausage Rolls, etc. There are a variety of the infamous pies offered. We tried a Steak and Ale pie and an Original Scotch Pie with brown sauce packet for the pour over. I enjoyed mine (Scotch Pie) and could've eaten a couple more God willing. Along with an Irn Bru, this was a satisfying and affodable meal. Definitely give this place a try when in the area.

There is also a chip shop and a bit to sit in. Unfortunately, I have never sampled either of those so this review is all about ice cream. I'm sure I should dazzle you with some facts about how long they have been established and all the awards they have won. But I can't. See when I go to Equi's all I'm thinking about is which flavour is going in ma belly. With two cabinets to chose from it takes me quite a while picking which of the 20 odd flavours to eat. It's why I take smudge, people are far more forgiving of indecision from a small person. But it's rather unfair seeing as she decides in nano-seconds and never suffers from selectors-doubt. This visit I chose a chocolate dipped cone of cherry vanilla ice-cream, g got a chocolate dipped cone of mango ice-cream and smudge a tub of chocolate ice-cream. It was a very quiet journey home with with everybody concentrating far too hard on their ice creams to risk melt related wastage on conversation. Equi's ice cream is creamy, soft and the flavours are always perfect. Punchy, strong and guaranteeing that I'll be back soon.

This place is right by The Vennel so it was a convenient location on my midday stroll. I first walked by and there was maybe 10 people in line so I decided to get it after visiting The Vennel. On my way back there were only 3 people ahead of me so great timing to enjoy delicious gelato in the cold but clear skies overlooking the castle. And I did just that. I was torn between the Salted Caramel and the Pistachio and I knew I couldn't finish 2 full scoops. The worker saw the indecision painted all over my face and recommended the Pistachio since it was a limited item. So I went with that. To my surprise she also included a large spoonful of the Salted Caramel just so I can try it too! Such a nice gesture. So there I was enjoying the creamy, delicious gelato sitting on a bench just across from Mary's Milk Bar. All the while indulging and soaking in the magnificent view of the castle and the very tasty gelato :)

Also conveniently accessible by bus. There is not much sitting space, such best to book in advance. We got a lovely table at the front window (which by the way is the only table in the front of the shop). I believe there is a very small sitting area in the back. You can find lots of chocolate variations on display on cupboard shelves. At the moment they offer 10% off chocolate bars before a certain time of the day. There are also macaroons, ice cream a (not gelato), pralines and little "cakes". Above the main entrance you see the drink menu written on huge chalk boards: Traditional chocolate, one for kids and one for adults, white chocolate, milky chocolate, dark chocolate and much more. They do coffee too. I ordered salted caramel ice cream and milk chocolate, which was the best hot milk chocolate in Edinburgh so far, and not to mention I got served plenty of it in a big mug. Definitely worth the money. Must confess, my eyes were bigger than my stomach and next time a hot chocolate will be plenty :-) They are also present with stalls at various Edinburgh markets, like Stockbridge. Where I was feeling despairing, distraught and dismayed I was overcome with delight, deliriousness and felt thoroughly delectable!! It was perfect...perhaps a bit rich, but the first few sips were to die for. It even came with a little dough cake-thing to dip into the thick, gloopy chocolate, like fondue! It would have been ideal for two to share. To be honest, I'm not what you would call a choc-a-holic - especially now that Cadbury's is no longer considered 'chocolate'. I lead with this little prelude as I left a bloody battle in London: a battle between hipsters and those obviously-deeply-embittered-by-a-woefully-unfulfilled-desire-to-be-part-of-the-cool-gang (as seriously, there is no other real explanation for this wildly irrational disdain) over polarising cereal-lovers'-delight, Cereal Killer in Brick Lane. Well move over Shoreditch. Glasgow now boasts Scotland's first cereal bar - Black Vanilla - standing bright white and cereally proud in the East End heart of Duke Street. I popped in this eve to check it out for myself - super busy and with no sign of slowing down at 7pm. While I did not partake personally (owing to a Dennistoun Bar-B-Que food baby) - I have awarded 5 stars on the principle of '5 stars until proven 3' (well, if it's good enough for the justice system...). The cakes look epic (Tunnocks Teacake cake *eyes roll back in head*), the donuts extreme, the sweetie shop insane and the ice-cream flavours all to-die-for. Add to that the longest wall of specialty British and US cereals you've ever seen, all served with a topping of said sweets and your choice of 10 flavoured milks or concocted into one of 5 cereal cocktails. My main reason for wanting a sundae is the cool glass and the amazingly long spoon. So after a considerable wait when they arrived in plastic take away cups with plastic spoons I was a little gutted. I was seated quickly and was given the menu and my eyes...my eyes were bigger than my stomach which is the other shame. My favorite was the Millionaire Shortbread Crepe. I mean come on. That thing was decadent, rich and just enough. That was probably the only dessert I was able to complete. Next, was similar to what we Americans call a pazookie. Nutella everywhere. I should've known that this would be the richest, creamiest and thickest of all. I probably should've ordered water but instead I craved a hot chocolate. I also ordered a hot chocolate which was dark chocolate I believe. Perfect for the cold weather. Unfortunately was stuffed by the time this came out. 10/10 recommend.
