I had a small wedding but wanted something a little different. Owner could not have been more helpful and made me a one tier cake as well as pink iced cup cakes and hand made chocolate cakes to match. These were not an item he sold but made them especially for me. I would highly recommend this shop to anyone as staff were wonderful and cakes were delicious.

I can highly recommend the pies, my mum wouldn't buy here anywhere else and as for the cakes well I'm so glad I don't work in here because I would spend all my wages on cakes and end up very round indeed! The current shop has been at its present address for forty odd years and is still run by the same family It was started by JIM and June McPhie circa 1973 but I always mind it bring there, years ago when I had just finished my night shift I would go there for my morning rolls and I can still smell the amazing aroma wafting from the shop was nothing short of fantastic. The secret I think to this shop is that they craft all their bakery products with the finest ingredients and it is common knowledge amongst the locals that McPhies supply various hotels the main one being the Hilton in Glasgow, they must be good if they supply five star hotels moreover McPhies were runners up in the supreme Scottish Pie 2005. Every time you go into the shop the array of cakes, pasties and bread is fantastic and as I said previously not the uniform size you get in the supermarkets , the Empire Biscuits are my favourite they are massive and they taste brilliant The staff also know there stuff and the service is always with a big hearty smile the mince pies are to die for and now that I think about it so is the rest on offer as over the years I think I have tried almost everything all on all a local baker who delivers in every aspect of his craft lovely jubly

It was the Sunday morning after a blurry Saturday night. I…read morewoke not quite hungover, but not quite right. The only thing so cure me was a totty scone roll. I dragged Stu out of his festering pit and we made our way to Grant's the Bakers. I had passed it several times while sprinting for the train and the smell emanating from the bakery almost caused me to forget all about the train and go and live in there. Hot rolls and hot drinks are available to take away at very reasonable prices. At 10.30 on a Sunday, the queue was out the door and spilling untidily onto the street. Builders, locals and hungover tramps waited patiently in front of the cake filled counter and sizzling hotplate of over-processed meats. The smell was fantastic. Thanks to the two wee wummin behind the counter the queue moved quickly. We bought 6 totty scones and hastened home to fry them! They were big, misshapen and had an almost meaty bite to them. This makes them high up there in my Totty Scone Hall of Fame. Yes, I do actually have a Totty Scone Hall of Fame. I am rather a freak, I do fear. Next time I think I'll go for an iced donut.

Now, as an amateur baker myself, I'd like to think I know my cupcakes. I bake from the Hummingbird Bakery books, and they always turn out fantastic. Having visited said bakery myself and got some dee-licious cakes, I can say that they are the best so far, but closely contended by this lovely little delight. The shop itself can seat a couple of tables of people. I am yet to sit in, but will do so one day for sure, as they sell Spanish hot chocolate that smells awesome. They have trays of different cakes every day. We sampled some marshmallow cupcakes, which, I have to say, are sweet beyond description, but bloody fabulous. You could easily share one between two and be satisfied (although I didn't, and was satisfied moreso). I just love everything about the place. I had no time to bake for visitors coming around today so I just went up and bought a box of 9 mini cupcakes, bite sized sponge topped with a peak of butter cream icing dyed vibrant shades of turquoise and pink, sprinkled with iridescent glitter. Gorgeous, cute as buttons, and went down a treat with the guests. The cupcakes are around £2.25 and the mini ones can be bought for £7.50 for a box of 9. Pricey perhaps, but in my opinion, you can never put a price on a good cake.

Quality local bakers that are fast becoming a rarity on our high streets. The Airdrie branch offer…read morea wide selection of breads, cakes and pies. My favourite is their award winning scotch pies and their fresh cream chocolate squares. Have never been past without there being a few customers inside and it's often queued out the door. Biggest issue is the shop layout as with only a tiny strip of space for customers to stand it's often hard to jostle out and utterly impossible with a buggy.

The cakes and biscuits are yummy, of course, and you can sit in here and have a cup of tea with your cake, which is ideal. What's better than cake and tea? Not much, I imagine. The shop itself is a little outdated, but perhaps part of the charm. The windows promise a shop full of cool retro trinkets and memorabilia, but it's a bit disappointing if I'm honest. Very 80's, but in a more dusty way than funky.
