I don't know when it became hip to hate on hipsters, but frankly - I despise hating of any and all varieties. Yes, I'll be as bold to say: I hate all hating spouted by haters especially when directed at yawn-worthily obvious targets like hipsters. There. I lead with this little prelude as I left a bloody battle in London: a battle between hipsters and those obviously-deeply-embittered-by-a-woefully-unfulfilled-desire-to-be-part-of-the-cool-gang (as seriously, there is no other real explanation for this wildly irrational disdain) over polarising cereal-lovers'-delight, Cereal Killer in Brick Lane. Well move over Shoreditch. Glasgow now boasts Scotland's first cereal bar - Black Vanilla - standing bright white and cereally proud in the East End heart of Duke Street. I popped in this eve to check it out for myself - super busy and with no sign of slowing down at 7pm. While I did not partake personally (owing to a Dennistoun Bar-B-Que food baby) - I have awarded 5 stars on the principle of '5 stars until proven 3' (well, if it's good enough for the justice system...). The cakes look epic (Tunnocks Teacake cake *eyes roll back in head*), the donuts extreme, the sweetie shop insane and the ice-cream flavours all to-die-for. Add to that the longest wall of specialty British and US cereals you've ever seen, all served with a topping of said sweets and your choice of 10 flavoured milks or concocted into one of 5 cereal cocktails. Yes, really. So, if you're as bored as I am with hipster bashing, get along to this monument of gentrification and knock yourself out on a bowl of Lucky Charms covered in smashed Oreos and drowning in peanut butter flavoured milk. If your looking for indulgence, this is your stop. I had seen the shake pictures and wondered at how they were eaten without it going all over you and now I know. Last night instead of booze we got shakes and I tried (badly) not to get Ice cream all down me. The shop was rammed when we got there. Ten min queue at least. The staff looked shattered. Like they had been serving desserts for about ten hours solid. When it got to my turn to pick I chose the cookie shake. It's a Cookie shake with ice cream, Oreo biscuits and cream on top. It was amazing. Very sweet and decadent. You literally feel like your having 3 desserts in one go. This is a 2000 calorie job I reckon. As well as shakes they do ice cream, waffles, cereal, sweets, etc. I like this place. I would not go all the time just purely as I felt like I put on a 5 kilos just walking into the shop, but it's certainly somewhere to go for a treat if you love the sweeter things in life! read more

Ok, so dessert parlours are popping up here, there and everywhere and most of them are pretty similar. Black Vanilla are really trying to differentiate themselves from your typical dessert parlour and that's great - yes, they're still selling waffles, hot cookie dough and crepes but they've taken milkshakes to the next level and they've added a few more quirky items like all of the weird and wonderful cereals AND the Hong Kong waffle wrap which is definitely what I'll be getting on my next visit. Yes, I'm already planning my next visit. When you head into the shop I was surprised at just how empty looking the shop was - one of the walls is lined with cereal boxes which is a nice touch but it's not the wannabe hipster dessert shop that I was expecting, it actually looks a little half finished. My boyfriend and I chose 2 of the speciality milkshakes - I opted for a Nutty Professor and my boyfriend got a Happy Birthday. When we ordered we were a little bit disappointed to see that everything seems to be made in the back - I would have loved to have been able to watch them make the milkshake. Although it was pretty busy, we didn't have long to wait. The dressing on the milkshake was amazing (and very instagram-able) and it was very tasty although admittedly the actual milkshake part wasn't as thick as I would have hoped - nonetheless, I really enjoyed it and I will definitely be back. read more

Everyone is always so quick to dis places like this, especially when a place like this happens to open up in the East End of Glasgow. I think it's only fair to give these places the benefit of the doubt. We decided to check it out one sunny Sunday afternoon. They only open from 4pm until 10pm just now. There were a few folk standing inside (Note: there's no tables or chairs just now), some waiting to get their order and a couple already enjoying their ice creamy/waffley/cerealy delights. The 1st thing that hits you as you enter is just HOW MUCH cereal they have on their cereal wall. WOW. All so bright and colourful (i.e. American) E-Numbertastic! I hadn't even heard of a lot of them but even I was tempted to try a bowl of some of them purely based on their crazy name and packaging. However I am here for the 'Specialty Shakes' as they call them. Basically a regular milkshake on steroids. With so many tempting combinations to choose from I plumped for the Cookie Crumble. At £4.95 they're not cheap but I know a good shake is worth paying a bit extra for (I'm talking about YOU, Krispy Kreme Caramel Biscoff Kreme shake! UH.) my boyfriend went for the amusingly titled Hong Kong Waffle Wrap (eh?!) we both weren't sure what exactly it was but hey, we like livin' on the EDGE. The HKWW was a bit cheaper at £3.95 and came with a few personalisation options such as would you like white, milk or dark chocolate chips in it? What flavour ice cream? What topping? Sauce or Nutella? My shake came out first and OMG...what a beast! It was HUGE. It was a big cookie crumble & vanilla ice cream shake with hunners (and I mean HUNNERS) of cream, chocolate sauce, a cookie & ice cream sandwich and oreo biscuit crumbs and more chocolate around the edge of the cup. *gulp* I didn't know whether to drink it, eat it or dive right into it. The HKWW took a bit longer to come out as it was served warm. It comes in a handy wee plastic cup with a spoon for you to chomp into as you jive, or maybe do some kung fu (I'm thinking Hong Kong Phooey!) down the street. They're are many other dessert/ice cream/cereal based options. The range of ice cream is nearly as vast as their cereal collection. The bowls of cereal cost either £3 or £3.50 (for a Non-UK cereal) and you can have your choice of milk, toppings and fruit on top of it too. They also serve cereal cocktails (£4.00) which i'm intrigued by...cookie dough, waffles, crepes, cheesecakes, doughnuts & cakes. The selection of the former 3 were a bit poor when we were in and I was sad they didn't have the Red Velvet cake as I LOVE RV cake. The verdict: my shake was really good, if maybe a little thin but it did look BRILLIANT and filled me up very much. I would add that it wasn't the easiest to drink/eat as they didn't serve it with a spoon straw thingy. Maybe they should invest in some for next time... The Hong Kong Waffle Wrap was REALLY very good. I wish I'd got that. I'm not a big fan of Nutella but the addition of it within the HKWW really made it. Myself & my boyfriend would deffo order that again. Oh yas. Will we be back? Oh yes. Gotta work my way 'round that menu yo... ;-) read more
