In fact, not only was there no immediately apparent coffeeshop right outside the tube, there wasn't one on the next street, or even around the corner! Once my mild anxiety attack passed... I decided to do some more scouting, which led me to the indoor shopping mecca* known as Govan Cross. Inside... I found none other than The Wee Scone Shop. I mean... how could I possibly have passed up a place with "wee" in the name? Really... I can't say I was tempted by the heat lamp-warmed grub, but I did escape with a frothy latte that satisfied my caffeine cravings. For that, I'm grateful. -- * This is a patent lie. By "shopping mecca" I mean "tragic retail food outlet that I would never consider spending any money at."

I've fortunately never been when it's busy but I've never been sure where you're supposed to queue. They recently had the counter done up and they have a counter for the cakes/cold rolls and a seperate counter for hot foods i.e. pasties/hot roll choices. I just go to the hot counter, they have a minimum selection of toasties, soup but normally have an ok variety of hot rolls and pasties. The cakes always look so delicious, the strawberry tarts are huge, to be honest most of the cake are massive. Me thinks they've been putting something in them to grow, just like when you get bizarre and ginormous cucumbers. When you go to Greggs it is your standard production line size but these come with the bumps, lumps and well out of shape. Just the way I like a cake. The clientele is normally old ladies have their afternoon tea but if you fancy a wee coffee break and cake pop in for a giant squiffy cake.

I thought I should make a return to Cardosi's since my last visit (probably about a year ago). I used to visit here quite often before work for a toastie and tea but stopped that once I realised how much money it was costing me. That's not to say that Cardosi's is expensive but it is probably pricer than most places in Paisley. Cardosi's also holds a special place in my heart for being the first place I visit in Scotland that served a side of "crisps" (chips) with a toastie. I was SO confused the first time this happened (especially as it was around 8.30am). But now I am quite fond of crisps as a side salad. Today I popped in for lunch and decided on a baked potato with chicken and cheese. What I was delivered was actually tuna and cheese (hence the 3 stars instead of 4). Thankfully I like tuna too, otherwise I would have asked for a fresh one to be made up. The potato was cooked well, not smothered in butter and had generous fillings. It also came with a side of coleslaw as well as rocket and balsamic. It was £5.45 for the additional topping, normally they are £4.95. Cardosi's has a really nice view of the museum and the Thomas Coats Memorial Church. The manager of Cardosi's (the restaurant) was also here, I'm sure he is a Cardosi's institution as everyone knows and loves him. He is super friendly and cheerful.

Its partnered restaurant seems to be a popular choice with Paisley folk that I know. I was served quickly and the soup was delicious, though pretty salty (what's that about the West of Scotland diet?!!). The prices are good; I got my sit in lunch for a fiver, including tipping. I'm yet to get a coffee here but the prices, if it's good coffee, were to my liking! There were older women having a good chin wag and students taking a break from their exams. I liked this mix. The best part about the place, though, are the windows. From where I perched I looked over some deep red tenements and could see Thomas Coats memorial church and the museum. I think the easiest way to get there is via Paisley/Bridge of Weir but if you like a long drive, you could go via Port Glasgow (ahem). I'd never been to Quarrier's Village before and was keen to get out and explore after lunch but with the rain, didn't have a chance. Quarrier's is like something out of a movie, lots of open, grassy green space and cute houses. It's a really delightful area. Three Sisters Bake is easy to find at the end of Faith Avenue and is one of the most magical cafés I've stepped into in a long time. I was there for the food, but I think the decor won me over just as much. I love the bright colours and attention to detail - this is a real wonderland, the kind of place you only see on wedding blogs and Pinterest. Onto the food. We were there for a long time, so ordered loads of food - the seafood platter to share for starter, and then I had the gourmet cheese on toast. With a heavenly mackerel pate and some seriously juice prawns with chilli and coriander this was a great way to start off a long lunch and made a good size starter between two. There was also some really soft and smooth smoked salmon on the board which I scoffed up while Graeme wasn't looking. The cheese on toast was way more fancy than I'd expected and came with a smothering of rocket - probably one of my favourite green things, so I was well chuffed. There was also leek hiding under the mature cheddar which definitely upped the age limit of this cheese on toast. For desserts we had a look at the cake counter but as I don't have much of a sweet tooth, I initially wasn't fussed. That was until I overheard the waitress delivering coconut and lime tart to the table behind me. I love coconut and lime! I tried to order it but that was actually part of their wedding tasting menu, not a dessert they were serving that day. But the delightful waitress went to check, and got a slice just for me - what a gem! Service was impeccable, friendly and warm and you can tell they all know a lot about the menu and that all the food is freshly prepared. I'm not sure I've managed to do Three Sisters Bake justice, but one thing I do know for sure - if you haven't been, you really need to go!

It is conveniently located at the end of the walk through Electric Glen so there was constantly people coming in to see about whether they could get a table. We hadn't tried The Boathouse, despite it being in our local park. When we arrived last night I was impressed by the decor - they've definitely gone for a boating theme but it's done in a very classy, relaxed way rather than being naff and tacky. We had a comfortable table for 4 by the window looking over the pond which would be an excellent spot to dine in summer. I was initially a little disappointed by the menu as it all seemed like standard café grub and the prices gave me the impression it might not be a great standard. There's sandwiches, baked potatoes, burgers, wraps plus a hot dishes section with fish & chips, macaroni cheese, beef chilli etc. And they have a separate breakfast meal (my favourite meal of the day!) I then read the cute little info box on the menu that says "real people make real food from real ingredients" and all outsourced food is marked on the menu so you know what is/isn't made on site. Understably things like ice cream, pasta plus some cakes/bread are bought in but it was pleasing to see the rest is made on site. I opted for the mac cheese - after doubling checking with the waitress what she thought of it. I think the price was around £5.50 so I was a bit worried it would be tiny or substard. When it arrived it was in a decent sized ramekin with garlic bread and side salad. It was incredibly cheesy and creamy and I'm pleased to report it was one of the best macaroni cheese dishes I've tried to date. Big call I know, as I eat a lot of macaroni cheese! My only comment about it was that the noodles were really small (perhaps maccheroncelli pasta which I had to google to check the name of!). But that wasn't anything to complain about, just something to note! The extra side of chips I ordered were also really good - nothing to rave about, but decent chips all the same. Service was exceptional - even without having to take into account how busy The Boathouse must be while Electric Glen was on. The place didn't feel busy, the staff didn't seem rushed and they were all calm and helpful. The waitress even came back to ask what I thought of the macaroni cheese after I'd finished it which I thought was nice of her. The bill for a meal for four people (mains only, a soft drink each) came to a very reasonable £40. If you want to have some drinks, they are BYOB with no charge for corkage. They also have free wifi. Seriously - this place is awesome. For proper, decent food right on our doorstep, I'm totally kicking myself for not visiting this absolute gem sooner and can't wait to go again.
