I posted about her in anticipation of her appearance on the adoption page. Their Instagram reposted my story days before she was put down.

In March 2025, I brought a stray Australian Shepherd, whom I named Joni, to Humane Colorado after she was abandoned in my neighborhood. She had been tethered outside for several nights with no shelter or adequate food. The night after I brought her in, there was a frost and temperatures dropped below freezing. I truly believed I was doing the right thing to protect her. Joni was about two years old, bright, affectionate, and gentle. I spent hours with her in my yard. She knew basic commands, played sweetly, and greeted my mom, boyfriend, and neighbors with calm friendliness. She was clearly a good dog who had been let down. I took her to "Humane" Colorado thinking she'd have the best shot at adoption. She had no microchip, so I surrendered her--believing it meant she would be cared for and placed in a new home, I mean who wouldn't want her? She was absolutely gorgeous. At intake, I was told I couldn't leave my contact info for any potential owners that might claim her from lost and found to tell them how I found her. I was not given a copy of the "surrender agreement" that I was verbally read. I thought e**th was in the case of a something as extreme as a rabid or deadly dog, not a dog like Joni. I was told she'd be listed on the Lost & Found page for 3 days, then the Adoption page. She was, in fact, listed on the Lost & Found page--but she never made it to the Adoption page. I checked both pages multiple times a day. When I called to the shelter to follow up, I was told she had been put down 6 days after intake, following two behavioral evaluations. I went on-site to get more info on what happened. According to her intake transcript, she had barked and jumped at staff--a normal response for an anxious dog in a stressful environment. These actions were interpreted as behavioral red flags. The clerk I spoke to kept reiterating that "legally, we can't do anything with them for 5 days," as if that alone explained or justified the lack of tranparency and the rushed decision to be put down. When I questioned the outcome, a staff member said, "Yeah, but unfortunately, you guys did bring her to a shelter that is really big, we..." implying that space and capacity played a role in her fate. Joni was put down under the guise of "behavioral issues," when in truth, she was a victim of an overwhelmed shelter system. She needed time, decompression, and compassion--not judgment in a chaotic setting she didn't understand. I believed I was giving her the best chance. Instead, she was gone in less than a week. Humane Colorado must do better. Clearer communication with the public, transparency around e*th*nasia and behavior evaluations, and more humane intake practices are urgently needed.

The quality of service here is unmatched. Everyone who works here cares about the animals and making sure they find a good fit for their new homes. My boyfriend and I met with the dog we would end up adopting that same day. I love the rooms they have here to meet with the animals because one room is set up the way a kitchen or studio apartment would be so seeing the animals in that environment is helpful. They also have another room we visited that included a yard space as well which lets the animal's personality come out. Well we ended up meeting with a shy and nervous 6 year old Boxer and knew she would add to our lives and that we would add to hers. She has already come out of her shell so much and is settling into her new home. We've decided to call her Rhuby ( short for Rhubarb ). I hope that people looking to adopt can see that sometimes a dog that's shy in a shelter environment can be your best companion and have their personality shine once you bring them home and put them in a comfortable environment. I can't say enough nice things about the service here. We were able to bring home a portrait of our dog that volunteers made which was so sweet and a care kit prepared for by the facility. There was a hand made blanket in there and toys that our girl loves to play with and cuddle on (features in the photos) . I would recommend this shelter to anyone looking for a companion to add to their home. The techs are so thorough if a dog has certain needs that need to be considered. They also helped us pick out pet insurance for her. Thank you again Humane Colorado!

All worth it for my cute guinea pigs the staff was super nice was a little bit of a wait time but that was no problem hope everyone gets a chance to adopt a pet here!

Left work early to get there before they close during business hours. Rushed over and rudely was rejected saying they're too busy, short staffed and close in a little bit. If you want to see the dog we open at 10am. If this is how you are rudely going to treat customers during your business hours change them to 4:30 not 5pm or clearly post no viewing after 4:30 on your website. I dont want to come back after the service I had but I will because they have the dog. Fingers crossed.

We had a great experience adopting from the buddy center! The staff was incredibly helpful and helped educate us on everything we needed to know about our new pup. We are so happy we chose to adopt from here :)

I don't often leave reviews but looking back on it I felt the need to say thank you. The people working were so friendly and so helpful. The adoption for my kitten was very easy and you can tell they're taking very good care of them. I was lucky enough to get the sweetest kitten and she's really the best. She's cuddly and loving and I couldn't stress enough how amazing of a process her adoption was.

When my husband and I were considering adopting another cat, we weren't entirely sure how we would go about it. Back in Indiana, we had both only had experience with barn cats and kittens in boxes labeled "FREE." For some ridiculous reason I got it into my head that I really wanted a little girl gray kitty. Looking at the Dumb Friends League website, I fell in love. When I first saw Luna, my heart simply melted. It's a little unfair how they photograph their animals so beautifully. I don't know how you could look at their website and NOT end up wanting to adopt at least one or two of the animals!!! Devious wench that I am, I kept leaving the computer open on her picture. My husband lasted less than week looking at that little face. Since she was down at the Castle Rock DDFL, we drove the 40 minutes or so down to meet her. There were so many adorable animals there I could hardly stand it. We got a private room to play with her and see if she would adopt us and I'm so glad she did! They were incredibly thorough in checking us out, they had to talk to the landlord and see all sorts of paperwork. We hadn't thought to come so prepared, so Todd drove back to Denver and then back again leaving me there to play with the kitty. (is he dreamy, or what?!) Staying there though was a huge mistake, seeing all the people coming in but not adopting had me crying on the steps on the outside by the time he returned. I remember blubbering something about starting a farm and adopting all the animals, but luckily he talked me off that ledge. The adoption went through without a hitch, and though we had to wait over the weekend to take her home and she was sick for the first two or three weeks after coming home, it's still one of the best decisions we've ever made.

Two or our adopted family members from Dumb Friends League. Most wonderful spirits ever!

YAY! I get to finally write a review on 4P4L!!…read more We found 4P4L due to a Petfinder search back in 2021. The dog we initially adopted wasn't good with our cats even though he was fine in his foster home with the resident cat. 4P4L understood and we were able to return him. They had asked me to write an updated bio for him so that potential adopters would get a better understanding of his demeanor. He was such a sweet dog but my cats weren't his thing, which wasn't his fault in the slightest. I wrote the bio and he got adopted. I was then asked to volunteer and become a foster, so we started fostering. A 3 day sleepover for a foster pup is how we started and since 2021, we have fostered over 100 dogs and volunteer at adoption events. While it is so tempting to adopt all our fosters, we know we're just helping them adjust to home life. There have been a few that we invoked the 6 month rule: if we have the pup for 6 months, we would adopt him/her because at 6 months, you're a part of our pack. Last month, there was a need to foster these 2 rottie pups because it was time for them to separate from their momma and momma needed a break. Rotties are one of our preferred breeds! Well, we invoked the 6 DAY rule knowing that the pups would be adopted within the week. So that's it! That's how we got our Saoirse! Even if you cannot adopt, please think about volunteering with us or becoming a foster! A little weekend break from the kennel is what all the dogs need and you may just invoke your own 6 day rule!!

It appears this rescue is able to pick and choose their posted reviews! Really Yelp? What have you turned into if we cannot post our TRUTHFUL experiences here? This upsetting and honestly, it's CENSORSHIP! Let me try again and see if yelp decides to censor me again. We adopted a cockapoo here. My mother paid $480 for our girl. We arrived and she comes out to us, UNBATHED, UNGROOMED and she SMELLED awful. She had diarrhea all over her rear end and she was SO terrified, she was shaking and pooped in the girls arms as she was carrying her. It was OBVIOUS that not ONE person had worked with her, bathed her or groomed her since she arrived at this facility! Just put her up on line and waited for someone to adopt her. Clearly NOT in it for the welfare of these animals. Just the money. Never an apology or explanation for this. No follow up phone call to see how she was adjusting. NOTHING. Based on everything here, we DO NOT RECOMMEND this rescue. They are SHAMEFUL!

Our last cat died and we finally felt ready to get another. We were set up with the kittens foster mother for a meet and greet. We noticed she had ten or more adult cats OF HER OWN in addition to the kittens from the shelter and two or three she was boarding. In the center of the room were two cat boxes overflowing with feces. Cat pee and poop was all over the carpet AROUND them. The stench was overwhelming. Our first thought was to run from there screaming but we wanted to get this poor kitten out of this situation. We were informed that the cat was finally big enough to fix and that we would be taking it home within a week. two weeks after it was able to be spayed, it wasn't. When I inquired about it and told the shelter I was concerned the kitten would learn to spray if it were around the MULTITUDE of spraying cats for much longer, I was treated with disrespect. LIke "How DARE you bring to our attention this health concern of people and animals." Oh sorry. I thought you would WANT to know that was happening. CRAZY!! Lindsey told us SHE was offended I would even bring it to her attention, and that she was terminating the adoption. Um..my children bonded with this cat. We were sent weekly updates. We care more for ANIMALS than these jokers and WE'RE the a**holes? No. What is funny is when we were leaving the foster house my husband said "This woman is borderline cat hoarding IMO and kept looking at OUR kitten wistfully. She's already keeping the other one. I bet you anything she finds a way to keep OURS." They appear to me, unprofessional. Not to mention, disorganized and RUDE. I'm home all day, we have the means and the room for the kitten, I waited for FOUR WEEKS for this kitten. This entire experience was exhausting and unnecessary!! Wait, wait, wait. Jump through hoops, get the run around, wait. DON'T DARE QUESTION!! My children are heartbroken. As my husband said, we would have had an easier time adopting a Chinese orphan. Just go to Dumb Friends. Edited to respond to Beth: This is my email to Lindsay Hi Lindsey, Dahlia who is fostering with Amber has been 2 lbs for over 2 weeks now. Still no word on when she is getting fixed. Amber said she hasn't heard from you guys. I'd like to bring her home we've been waiting nearly a month for her. She is being fostered with a BUNCH of other cats who are spraying all over the place over there. I would like to get her out of there before she learns any bad habits. Thanks. This is the response I got I do think that considering your concerns about bad habits and the influence of the other cats at our foster's home, it's best if we reconsider this situation as a whole. I have to say I'm a little offended at the suggestion that one of our great fosters, who has opened up her home to kittens in need and to potential adopters that want to meet them, isn't up to par with your standards. I apologize for taking so much of your time and hope that you find a kitten that's the right fit for your family. ***REALLY BETH? Two small full litter boxes for more than ten cats isn't up to ANYONE'S STANDARDS if they have STANDARDS. But your commitment to defend this rudeness is admirable. Especially considering this is the number one reason cats are given up for adoption. Way to address a legitimate concern and turn away a family for a needy cat. STELLAR business practices. I feel sorry for the cats your leaving in these filthy conditions. **Now I am getting private messages from people who work for the Shelter claiming to be my neighbor and know where I live. People who foster for them and have NOTHING to do with my case. Why would they have that info? I will be reporting them to YELP and all proper authorities. This place is UNREAL.

When I sent over the signed letter from my landlord with my approval to adopt a dog as an ESA, they then demanded a dr's note on top of it. It is illegal to demand doctor's notes unless the pet owner is requesting special accomodations (basically only landlords and airlines can demand this). They told me they weren't willing to let me adopt unless I sent them a doctor's note with privacy protected personal information, or got a second letter from my landlord saying i was allowed to adopt a non-ESA pet. I had already provided proof from the landlord I was allowed to adopt a dog - asking for extra proof they wouldn't ask a non-disabled adopter for because I had a disability allowing for an ESA is illegal. Both unpleasant and discriminates against people with disabilities.
