What a wonderful night! We were able to treat the kids to their first night at the drive in - and it was something my husband and I hadn't had a chance to do together. The property was clean and well kept. Clean bathrooms that are temperature controlled and have sound so you don't miss much of the movie if you have to use them. Concessions were on the slow side, but I assume they don't mass produce the snacks for smaller crowds, so that wasn't too bad. I also saw you can pre-order and they'll text you when it's ready - something we will take advantage of next time. This is definitely something we will do again when we are town. read more

Come out to Lexington and support one of Virginia's last drive in theatres! Great place to spend a Friday or Saturday night. Come for the night's first showing and you get to stay to watch the night's second film for free. They have speakers you can put inside your car or you can also just tune your radio to the theatres station. Love it! read more

Sometimes a place deserves to be shouted about from the rooftop just because it exists. And while this is not the closest drive in theater to Washington D.C., it is a pretty amazing place to visit in the Shenandoah Valley. It could be expected that this theater in operation since the 1950s would rely on nostalgia. I expected a bit of brokenness to my movie experience. But everything was absolutely flawless in the execution of showing outdoor films here. The sound quality coming through my car's stereo was flawless (though I did not try the old school speaker, it looked to be in good shape as well). The picture quality on the screen was not exactly IMAX quality but it was on par with most indoor movie houses for sure. And the "hosts" over the speakers were very informative about procedures during the run up to the film to avoid confusion. The only real problem I had with the theater was my wait time at the concession stand for a simple order. It was a very busy summer night when I went and there were a lot of people but the concession workers seemed to be standing around and disorganized. Since the theater depends on their food sales to stay alive, it was amazing that this was the one part of the experience that was not enjoyable. Still, it was a fun night out overall and very inexpensive for two movies (even if I left after one since it was almost midnight by the time the first ended and I'm old). I would love to experience seeing a drive in movie at this classic year round car theater again soon. read more

This place is a gem! I went to college in Lexington and we used to come out to Hull's on the weekends during warmer weather. At the time, I didn't realize how lucky we were to be visiting one of the last of a dying bread hearkening back to a bygone era. This is the real deal with cheap food and posts that you park next to with the wired speakers you put in your car. Great fun and on the weekends I noticed that they now have a swap meet during the day. A must visit if you're in Lexington. read more

I agree with an earlier review ... 5 stars for simply existing! They try to show family-friendly recent movies. They don't always succeed, but sometimes they don't have a lot choice. The screen is not in very good shape, but it works. The prices are cheap, both admission and concession. I applaud the excellent job done by the Hull's Angels! read more

This place is right from the past. Great family fun....great for a date. The place was very clean and not run down at all. One person collecting tickets caused a bit of a pile up getting in, but I would suggest going at time the gates open to get a good spot, because it always seems to be full. Taking your own food is prohibited, but the popcorn that i bought there was stale. I'd rather just give a donation and take my own popcorn. We go at least once a summer. I've noticed improvements, so that is good. read more

Personality out the wazoo! We got there as soon as the gates opened @ 7 p.m. (The first movie didn't start until 9 p.m. so we had plenty of time to munch on our packed-in goodies.) They are pet-friendly (but do ask that you bring a leash and poo bags). When we pulled up to the gate, the ticket guy gave our dog a treat that was so good, she spent the next 90 minutes trying to figure out how to bury it in the back seat. Between the time the gates open and the movie starts, they had music playing: oldies, jazz, and even a few bluegrass thrown in. Kids can play in the area down by the screen. People escape the heat from their cars by bringing their own lawn chairs and set them up in front of their vehicles. The smart fellow next to us (apparently a Hull's veteran) brought a battery operated radio so he didn't have to use the post speaker or his car radio. Every now and then, a friendly voice would come over the loud speaker and welcome us, wish someone a happy birthday, try to lure us to the snack stand, or tell us another interesting tidbit. Tickets are $6 per adult. Concessions were also reasonably priced. Can't think of many other family-friendly things that can entertain a family for this many hours this cheaply. I gave it four stars because the bathrooms were in pretty bad shape and the screen could use some help. But all in all, a great deal. read more

I grew up in Pennsylvania, which has more drive-in theaters than other states do, and I have been familiar with drive-ins throughout my life. Compared to other drive-ins, this one definitely is not my favorite but is good. The cost of admission ($7 or less per person, depending on age) and food (a couple to few dollars per item) was reasonable. The employee at the gate was nice. My husband and I easily found a spot to park our car for an optimal view of the screen. The screen and concession stand/bathroom buildings could be updated, but that costs money, which drive-in theaters do not have much of. 5 stars for continuing to exist, since this country pitifully has way fewer drive-in theaters, than in the heyday of drive-in theaters that occurred before my time(from the early '50s, to mid '70s). And, since ours needs ALL the operational drive-ins it can! I've never actually seen a movie here(very sadly the case, but I someday hope to ACTUALLY see a movie here), but I did do a detour from Lexington, VA a few years ago, so I could check this place out for myself. This place is closed during the day, and doesn't host flea markets, or other daytime events, unlike what some drive-ins do to get additional revenue. My relatives from Lynchburg, VA, are big fans of this place, and've seen movies here several times. Very, very brief summary on the history of the place: It opened in 1950 as Lee Drive-In, and was saved from permanent closure, when a non-profit community group(called 'Hull's Angels') formed in 1999, and raised enough money to finally later purchase the theater from a owner that succeeded Mr. Hull in 2001(Mr. Hull, btw, passed away in 1998). Hull's is one of the greatest treasures that Lexington, Virginia has to offer. As one of the few remaining Drive-ins left in the state, the community takes great pride in Hull's. It's a fantastic family friendly location (although their movies vary from children's to adults) and very easy to find, right off Route 11 in Lexington. They have fun raffles & contests for children as well as raffles for all to participate in. Their food is a little unreasonably priced, but since it's a non-profit, I'm glad to pay a little more to perpetuate the amazing legacy of Hull's Drive-In. A few things to remember: Smoking IS allowed in the back of the location. Leashed dogs are allowed and the owners are expected to clean up after them. They do not issue refunds for inclement weather. I highly recommend Hull's to anyone visiting the area, it's a great experience! read more

What a treat to see "Ted" at the Hull's Drive In last night. It a throw back to my childhood. Great family fun. The guy at the gate is friendly and informative. Great to see families with lawn chairs and kids turning out for a great night. $14 per person for a double feature. We didn't see the second movie but felt that we got our value. This was definitely a fun experience for our entire family! Admission and concessions prices are super cheap too. You get more bang for your buck here! It was definitely worth every penny spent. The atmosphere is classic. What better way to spend the evening than watching a movie under the stars, with the beautiful mountains in the background?
