Great little multiplex who pops their own popcorn. It was clean and friendly. They had a good selection.

Decent enough. The staff is friendly. I just wish the matinee and kids ticket pricing was better.

Today I decided to go visit and experience first hand the magic behind this theatre that besides showing movies and holding special events, it has and will always be the heart of this community, and as I was able to see and experience for myself offers a unique movie going experience. When I first arrived, I was fascinated with the magnificent restoration of this Historic Art Deco Architectural building. Little did I know that I was about to experience one of the best movie going experiences of a lifetime. For I discovered that a local community movie theatre is more than just a place to go watch a movie and eat popcorn. It is a place to feel the pulse of fervent community in action. At the ticket booth I was greeted by a young lady and asked to go inside to purchase my ticket because her computer was not working as it should. So I proceeded to do so and walked over to the concession stand where a lady greeted me with a warm welcome and not only sold me the ticket but after I asked her about the theatre, she gave me a personal description of key points of its structure as well as other activities that took place here. Among other things she told me about the Art Gallery on the second floor, the different viewing rooms and the two owls located in the main one, and other events and activities that they have year round including the fundraisers. Also, tonight they were having the Rocky Horror Picture Show showcased by the Tolls of Madness Troupe from Virginia Tech. The cast will dress like the ionic characters and encourage audience participation through callback lilines aimed at the screen and throwing various props as called for by the film. Needless to say the two shows for tonight were sold out. What an exciting event here in this community movie theatre in the Star City of Roanoke! One could see the excitement and enthusiasm of all the theatre employees, from the ones behind the concession stand selling the popcorn to the ones finishing putting up some light up the stairs to the second floor as part of the Halloween decorations. Inside the main viewing room I was impressed with natural red brick walls and the two owls. The chairs even though they weren't as reclinable as some of the ones in new modern theatres, they made you feel at home, maybe because they reminded me of the many time I went to my hometown movie theatre before many of them have become extinct due to lack of creative management and competition from the big new modern ones. Last time I went to one of those the room temperature was so hot to the point of being uncomfortable. But here, in this cozy and warm not so little theatre, the air-condition worked just fine and contributed to the excellent movie watching experience. As I was leaving there was a crowd of people outside waiting to come in for the Rocky Horror Picture Show; and I thought to myself: Now I know and have experienced the magic behind the Grandin Theatre and wish everyone who reads my review can do the same.

Firstly, definitely smaller than what we've become used to up in NoVA. All the theatres were on one level along the corridor at the back of the building, with combined ticket/concession stand at the front. We wanted tho get what we consider a medium popcorn, but they only had two sizes and both in the $7-8 range, more than what each of our movie tickets cost. When asked, the staff at the counter mention a "kid's pack" that apparently comes with a tiny popcorn and other goodies. I know a lot of things are supersized over here, but it was disappointing not to be able to get a snack-sized popcorn. The theatre was cozy and there were literally only two other people in the entire room, which didn't bother us. What did bother us was how the sound was coming only from the speakers in the middle and left, and no sound coming from the right side of the screen. We alerted the staff at the concession and they came out to check it out, but ultimately it was no better by the end of the movie. This was theatre 7 by the way, and we'd go back unless the movie was in theatre 7 and the issue wasn't fixed. We do like the discounted rate for certain showings.

From the looks of this theatre we are nearing Roanokes theatre extinction. Which is sad and this review won't help but I keep my reviews unbiased and transparent. The theatre itself was incredible hard to find as it was tucked directly behind Kroger and not visible at all from the main road. I ordered tickets online $28 for one child and one adult. Got the kids box (popcorn, candy, drink) for $12 and was pleased with the price for this. Checking in at the concession stand and picking up the tickets was relatively simple. Top advice would be, don't look down. The floor was absolutely disgusting and clearly it does not get cleaned often. The carpet is probably the original and is just beyond icky. Popcorn and trash everywhere. Showtime was at 4:15. The movie didn't start until 4:40. There were multiple retirement home and retirement cruise commercials that sort of set the tone and it was clear they are marketing to elderly patrons. The theatre itself was small and the seats are old and low to the ground, my child was basically awkwardly folded up in hers the whole time as she was not heavy enough to hold it down. Small children would have a hard time seeing here. But the movie itself was good, sound was fine, screen was fine. It didn't smell despite the carpet looking like it probably should. The bathrooms were not clean either and trash was overflowing. The space is large and the staffing is probably low and young. Lots of dirty work here is not being kept up with but at the end of the day it was a movie and my daughter enjoyed it.

However, someone was sitting in my seat, in a packed theater and refused to move, unless I get a manager involved. The problem I have is the manager did not ask the person to leave the theater, after all that drama. Just asked the person to go to their original seat, which was front row, terrible seating, relative to my middle of theater seating. If a manager does not enforce assigned rules strictly, particularly for when a person refuses to get up, the manager is welcoming this to happen again. I am worried about this happening again. And I should not have to feel that way when going to a theater I went to enjoy myself, paid a lot of money, and had to deal with that stress.

I found something depressing about walking into a theater and seeing kiosks where people used to work. Having bought my ticket I went to a theater that was not IMAX, but with special format. The reclining chairs were a good perk and there was plenty of space. The movie going experience was largely uneventful and was a better experience than I've had in Roanoke. If you want really top class theater experience, you'll have to probably drive to a bigger city.
