Today I decided to go visit and experience first hand the magic behind this theatre that besides showing movies and holding special events, it has and will always be the heart of this community, and as I was able to see and experience for myself offers a unique movie going experience. When I first arrived, I was fascinated with the magnificent restoration of this Historic Art Deco Architectural building. Little did I know that I was about to experience one of the best movie going experiences of a lifetime. For I discovered that a local community movie theatre is more than just a place to go watch a movie and eat popcorn. It is a place to feel the pulse of fervent community in action. At the ticket booth I was greeted by a young lady and asked to go inside to purchase my ticket because her computer was not working as it should. So I proceeded to do so and walked over to the concession stand where a lady greeted me with a warm welcome and not only sold me the ticket but after I asked her about the theatre, she gave me a personal description of key points of its structure as well as other activities that took place here. Among other things she told me about the Art Gallery on the second floor, the different viewing rooms and the two owls located in the main one, and other events and activities that they have year round including the fundraisers. Also, tonight they were having the Rocky Horror Picture Show showcased by the Tolls of Madness Troupe from Virginia Tech. The cast will dress like the ionic characters and encourage audience participation through callback lilines aimed at the screen and throwing various props as called for by the film. Needless to say the two shows for tonight were sold out. What an exciting event here in this community movie theatre in the Star City of Roanoke! One could see the excitement and enthusiasm of all the theatre employees, from the ones behind the concession stand selling the popcorn to the ones finishing putting up some light up the stairs to the second floor as part of the Halloween decorations. Inside the main viewing room I was impressed with natural red brick walls and the two owls. The chairs even though they weren't as reclinable as some of the ones in new modern theatres, they made you feel at home, maybe because they reminded me of the many time I went to my hometown movie theatre before many of them have become extinct due to lack of creative management and competition from the big new modern ones. Last time I went to one of those the room temperature was so hot to the point of being uncomfortable. But here, in this cozy and warm not so little theatre, the air-condition worked just fine and contributed to the excellent movie watching experience. As I was leaving there was a crowd of people outside waiting to come in for the Rocky Horror Picture Show; and I thought to myself: Now I know and have experienced the magic behind the Grandin Theatre and wish everyone who reads my review can do the same.

I really, really like this smalltown indie theater, especially after the ownership change in 2026…read more (Nothing wrong with the previous ownership, it's just next-level now.) It's a three-screen theater that strikes a good balance between mainstream/current Hollywood fare and art-house one one big screen, one medium, and one tiny back room. I mostly go for the art films (documentaries, independent, and foreign films), which they show in once-weekly showings for four seasons of about 10 weeks per year with short breaks between. These are a real highlight of my weekly leisure time, and I buy seasons tickets for myself and one other person, sometimes two. The films are well-curated, rarely do I not like or love one, and the introductions genuinely add to the enjoyment (there is also after-film discussion but I'm not a late-night person so I don't stay for those). The new ownership brings an obviously fresh perspective, clear commitment to investing in the facilities, and welcome but not too dramatic changes to various things like the snacks and ordering lines. Nick is making upgrades carefully without too much risk of fixing what ain't broke, which I think is prudent. There's fresh paint and decor, a new Visulite logo short clip that is worlds better than the nauseating previous one, and a generally obvious love of film/cinema is on display. The previous owner loved cinema too, but it just felt a bit stagnant, and now it feels fresh and revitalized. One thing that stands out to me is that someone is really investing time and considerable talent in things like pre-screening intro shorts. I was at the anniversary showing of Blue Velvet and there was a sequence of interview snippets and short excerpts from David Lynch films that showed before the feature, and it was really seamlessly put together and coherent. That doesn't just happen: it takes skill, planning, care, and effort. I really appreciate things like that and get a very strong, optimistic sense for the future as a result. Another thing I want to note: I think I understand some of reasons why one of the theaters is tiny and dingy. If you learn how the Hollywood studios force a one-size-fits-all model on their distributors, who do the same to theaters, you will understand why theaters maintain a very low cost option to cut their losses when they are forced to do things that will not only fail to make money, but actually lose them money. I'm sure I'd understand a lot more if I were in the biz myself, but I think I get the gist of it enough to give them credit for adapting to a pretty harsh, unforgiving business environment.

The staff were polite and professional and the facilty was clean. It is an older theater, so it is not stadium seating but the old theater seating with padded seats in a row. Facility is older and shows some signs of wear. We were able to see a movie that had just been released after it did not do well at the main theaters. You can go to their website and see what is playing for the coming week, they usually have 5-6 different options and at least one or two is a kids movie. Definitely a great options for a cheap day out for your family.

Top advice would be, don't look down. The floor was absolutely disgusting and clearly it does not get cleaned often. The carpet is probably the original and is just beyond icky. Popcorn and trash everywhere. Showtime was at 4:15. The movie didn't start until 4:40. There were multiple retirement home and retirement cruise commercials that sort of set the tone and it was clear they are marketing to elderly patrons. The theatre itself was small and the seats are old and low to the ground, my child was basically awkwardly folded up in hers the whole time as she was not heavy enough to hold it down. Small children would have a hard time seeing here. But the movie itself was good, sound was fine, screen was fine. It didn't smell despite the carpet looking like it probably should. The bathrooms were not clean either and trash was overflowing. The space is large and the staffing is probably low and young. Lots of dirty work here is not being kept up with but at the end of the day it was a movie and my daughter enjoyed it.

Before the movie started,she YELLED at the audience that no foolishness was going to take place in her theater. I witnessed this woman get in fight with a group of people during previews. Go up to a row in the middle of the movie during a pivotal scene and say loudly, "turn off your cell phone!" to a girl who had only taken out her cell phone a couple of times to check on something. People will not go back to this theater if they are going to be treated like sixth graders. I know I will not.

We arrived 15 minutes early and upon entering the theater, realized there was NO HEAT (this is January). The lady said she would turn it on after she helped everyone else- why not before we arrived? Then our 1:10pm film had not started by 1:30pm and still no heat. I nicely notified her of the issues and she said she was the only person there and would start it after she helped everyone else. Once she started the film there were TV commercials for 10 minutes before previews! 30 minutes into the film we were still freezing and complained again. She realized she turned the heat on in a different room, not ours. So it blasted with heat for 20 minutes, then shut off again and cold again. No apology or effort to make the issues better. I train employees in customer service so imagine my dismay. My 650 friends on facebook were surprised to hear me complain, but it was too much. I write this review because I cannot find a management contact for the cinema. Don't go!! Several of my facebook friends also commented of poor experiences with staff there. Bummer!
