This isn't a "greasy spoon" with a boring, basic menu, rather Jenny (the chef) has an amazing menu loaded with freshly made items and sauces. She spends a lot of time and energy putting together some great, uniquely prepared menu items that sound typical, but aren't done the typical way. Her Shrimp Po Boy was outstanding! The bread is part of what makes an amazing Po Boy and she knocked it out of the park by selecting the bread she's using. She explained she specifically selected this bakery for the bread and it came out perfect! The shrimp was perfectly battered with a slight cornmeal batter (I know, not traditional, but perfectly done!) and the sauce on top brought it together nicely! The steak & cheese was excellent! Nice beef, no fat/gristle and great toppings and cheese... We added sautéed jalapeño and onions to it and they really made it taste great! My favorite item was her cole slaw - it was unbelievably tasty and very fresh! You can tell it's made fresh daily!!! The fish sandwich is incredible too... fresh fish with her homemade tartar and a pickle and cheese added... I've never had a fish sandwich with a pickle, but this was great! The bun was incredible too. They offer the typical assortment of wines, beers, and even the popular new alcohol canned drinks. The view, if you sit outside is incredible with views of the cliffs across the Jackson River. Service from the servers, all the way up to Jenny herself was great too. Everyone is treated like family there. Highly recommend stopping in for dinner, lunch, whatever - we definitely enjoyed it!

So while vacationing in West Virginia, I was pleasantly surprised to see a Carnegie Hall in Lewisburg. In 1902 Carnegie was approached by local interests to help fund a new classroom building at the Lewisburg Female Institute, which was to replace an earlier structure that had burned down. Lewisburg Female Institue later became the Greenbrier College for Women, which closed down in 1972. Ownership passed to the Greenbier Center, a state run facility for mentally and emotionally challenged children. Carnegie Hall faced demolition in the 1980s, but was later taken over by a non-profit group. Restoration was completed in 1997. Carnegie Hall also serves as a museum with about three or four different exhibit spaces. My husband Rick and I toured the Libby Caligan Vass Stephens "Covenant" exhibit in the main hall. Stephen's work deals in the abstract, incorporating complex life forms intermingled with design elements and cultural symbolism. We also looked at he artwork in the Old Stone Room and Auditorium Galleries. Rick found the whole thing a little --ahem-- dry, but he did like the building's Greek Revival style. It's a shame we didn't get to see a show here. Oh, speaking of which, here's a short list of the talent that's played here: Taj Mahal, Winton Marsalis, Gillian Welch, The Del McCoury Band, Cowboy Junkies, Sonny Landreth, Josh Ritter, and Arlo Guthrie.

While I was there I met and saw many great artists such as Kris Kristofferson, Robin & Linda Williams, The Mighty Rainmakers, and many more. In addition to the many great concert series performances I also had the joy of seeing the theatrical performance of Stonewall Country every night and working with a wonderful volunteer staff, cast, and crew. Stonewall Country was a great musical about the life and death of Civil War General Stonewall Jackson. Who by the way is buried in Lexington as well in Stonewall Jackson Cemetery off Main St. His horse is stuffed and located in the Virginia Military Institute museum. Since I left my home in Stonewall Country, I have but one concern; That I will never get back home To see the seasons turn. Or the sun go down in Stonewall Country, Pink and flaming red. With the trees all silhouetted Against the mountain's crest, Just over to the west.

My husband and I, with some friends, enjoyed a great concert last night in the Bowl...Love Canon!…read moreThe concert sold out so be sure to purchase tickets ahead of time online. There were probably several hundred folks at the venue, but it was not over-crowded. This is such a great outdoor venue! Parking was a breeze and it was a short walk to the restrooms, entrance, will call, and food and drink. Concert started at 7:30p and we arrived around 6:30p. We had plenty of time to find a bench and stake our claim to it with a blanket. Then we purchased dinner...choices were burger, chicken salad, tuna salad, quinoa and rice salad, tuna, crab cake and maybe another item or two. Non-alcoholic drinks were water, sodas, and apple juice. There was also a food truck that offered some small bites and dessert. Beer and wine were also for sale for $5 each. The only draw back was the long line for food and then another long line for beer and wine. There was an area with about half a dozen picnic tables. The restrooms were quite clean! The band played until about 11:00p. Music and lighting were terrific. Leaving the venue was a breeze. I would definitely recommend this venue!
