I was disgusted by an experience I had here. They normally heat up the BBQ eel in a microwave, but I prefer mine cold. So I asked the employee not to heat mine up. Shockingly, she reached into the microwave, pulled out some BBQ eel that had apparently been sitting there for a while, and felt it with her hand to check its temperature. She obviously intended to put this dubious meat in my bowl if it had cooled off enough. To her credit, she was wearing gloves when she felt the food. But I was still disgusted. There's no telling how long that eel had been sitting in the microwave. But even if it hadn't been sitting there long, it seems unsafe to serve food that has been cooked, chilled, then reheated and left to sit in a microwave until it has returned to room temperature. But that's not where it ended. I protested, telling the employee I didn't want the eel that had been sitting in the microwave for an unknown amount of time. Shockingly, she then put the warmed over food back in the cold storage bin with the rest of the eel. Ostensibly, she was intending to heat it up a third time and serve it to some unsuspecting customer later on. Doesn't this violate some kind of food safety regulations? I'm bummed because I had been kind of excited about this restaurant. On top of that, this experience kind of sketches me out about all poke bowl restaurants. Poke bowl restaurant employees are generally not exactly highly trained sushi chefs. If they can't even handle cooked foods, what does that say about their ability to handle uncooked fish? What's more, I'm not sure that poke bowls and San Antonio are a good fit. I mean, we can't even seem to get sushi right in San Antonio. Even the best sushi joints in town are mediocre when compared to other cities. So how can we be expected to offer a decent poke bowl? Maybe I'm done with this genre of cuisine entirely. Or maybe I'll wait to make up my mind until I try poke in Hawaii, its place of origin. But one thing I can be fairly certain of is that I'm done with this particular establishment. read more

Great little spot, quality Poke! Good service, good food, they do a nice job. Overall, great place to pop in and try a sushi burrito if you've never had one. Parking is horrible though. May be best to just park far away and walk. read more

Killer bowls. Lots of toppings maybe not the largest protein scoops but that's made up for in the toppings and you can choose to get free crab salad. Fresh ingredients. Price is reasonable. Location is pretty small and parking sucks weekdays during lunch but worth the hassle. read more

Had no idea what to expect, my buddy brought me here. He said we were having a sushi burrito or sushi bowl. And yes it's exactly what it sounds like, I thought it would be weird but it was awesome. You walk through the like cafeteria style and the staff loads up you burrito or bowl exactly how you want it. You choose one two or three meats. I chose the three meat burrito because I eat a lot. I had shrimp, tuna and salmon. It was surrounded by rice and seaweed wrap. I filled the inside with veggies like corn, avocado and even added some fish eggs. On the side I had the eel sauce which was bad ass. Picked up a strawberry with aloe drink to wash it all down. The food was fresh and pretty filling, usually I eat two or three rolls at a sushi place before I'm full. My friends enjoyed the food, the location was quiet and relaxing, everyone had their mouths full with the amazing food. I'll be back soon enough to try something different. read more

First off the parking lot is always packed. This place is crammed into a small shopping strip thats always Busy. The options for poke bowl are good. One of my sons favorite place. Items seem fresh an taste good too. Come by it will not disappoint. read more

I loved this! I walked in, got in line to place my order. Line wasn't long at all, but the place had plenty of folks eating, so you know the line moves fast which is great. Anyway, I did mention to the gentleman that was helping me that it was my first time there, so he did a good job of explaining how to order... he did suggest to try one of their signature poke bowls as it was my first time there, but I actually opted to try a build my own salad. I chose a poke salad with 3 proteins - spicy tuna, eel and crab sticks. My mix - ins were cucumbers, kale, carrots, red cabbage and some sliced daikon. Dressing was eel sauce and wasabi aioli... but I should've added a little ponzu as well - I meant to - but forgot. My toppings were seaweed salad, cilantro, sesame seeds, tomago, pickled ginger, pickled daikon and chili flakes... and last but not least my crunch was shredded nori. So the coolest part is you can add whatever toppings you want once you choose either a two scoop protein or a three scoop protein. If I'm not mistaken, the signature poke bowls cost the same? Anyway I got it to go came home and ate it and it was delicious. I just love all the selection... I will definitely be back and the next time I think I'm actually going to try a signature poke bowl. Didn't want a lot of filler like rice so it was really nice that I got to choose something light like Romaine and then just added a bunch of different flavors on top of it. read more

Hula poke is a very clean and fresh poke spot. The process is very easy to understand-- you go to the back, pick your 2 (or 3) proteins, choose either brown rice or sushi rice and pick all of your toppings you please. I chose the 2 protein with sushi rice, with lots of sweet and spicing toppings and sauce and it was good. They mix everything together, and the end result wasn't too pretty but it was delicious and fresh ! I wish I hadn't added the cucumbers , as I think it was pickled. The interior is a bit on the small side and the tables fill up pretty quickly. The glass wall dividing you and the employees make it hard to hear. The parking lot is tight but available. Don't park too close to the entrance of the outlet, as it gets difficult to pull out. But overall, it was a nice experience. read more

I ordered the salad and was a little disappointed. I think this place is cool, but if I were to go back I would pick the rice instead. I will say that they do have cool topping options. I also would have asked for less sauce, or even for it to be on the side since it really took over the flavors of the rest of the bowl. I kinda think this place is overrated in my opinion, but maybe I just need to give it another shot. read more

This was my first time trying Hula Poke and I will be back. The food looked and tasted fresh. Everything mixed together was great. It was light but filling. Rolling Fish and Hula Poke YAY. NOW YALL JUST NEED A LOCATION IN SOUTHTOWN! I love this place. I loved the bowl I made even though I could not re-create it to save my life. I love poke and chirashi bowls. I love how fresh everything is and the amount of choices you have. Everyone was super friendly, the place is small, but quaint. Parking sucks, but I would totally go to guitar center and hit this place after. I love Hula Poke! Feels healthier and my bowl (just bowl with two proteins - salmon and tuna) was about 9 something. Not bad! And you're not eating like chips or anything fried so it's KIIIINDA considered healthy. (we won't talk about the amount of rice was in my bowl tho :P) Definitely recommend trying it out!!!!! read more

My new favorite lunch spot. Price is reasonable, customer service is awesome. Super clean. Food is super yum.

So happy they opened up only a few miles from my house! Owner took time out of his busy opening to chat with me. Obviously, not traditional Hawaiian poke for all you purists out there. But what it definitely is is a healthy, tasty, and fresh change of pace from all the pizza and burger joints in SA. So many different varieties of salads, bowls, and sushiritos... think Chipotle but with way more fixings. They have brown rice! No entirely positive review is to be trusted so.... since the place is new, I can't comment on the consistency. But I intend to come back often and do more research :) read more

Hula - Salad or not, you won't leave hungry. - Poke Near Me - San Antonio, Texas

I had really high hopes for this place! :( I ordered through Favor and was already disappointed that they up charged me for avocado when I did not request it. I ordered the Hawaii Poke Bowl. The cucumbers and lettuce in the bowl looked and tasted wilted and old. The bowl was PACKED with onions and pineapples. Those two flavors completely overpowered the bowl. These reasons are why I will not be returned to Hula Poke in the future. read more

It was my first time visiting a restaurant like this, so I was pretty clueless. However, the folks there were super-friendly and helped me figure out what I wanted and didn't stint on samples at all. The food itself was amazing. The fish was fresh and tasty, the greens crisp, and dressings nicely balanced. They also were not stingy at all with the very wide breadth of topping options. Veggies, fish roe, egg, seaweed salad, it was great! TL;DR: Tasty, healthy food that's a good value for what you get served by friendly folks. I look forward to going again. read more

I went during the first weekend of opening. I was expecting a bit a opening issues but seemed to be OK. The biggest issue I was was that I didn't understand the way to order and it took a few minutes with people in line behind me probably wondering what I was doing. I think it was new for everyone though. Also, there was music in the background, the people behind the counter had serving masks on and that contributed to the difficulty. Once I got my food though, it was all worth it. everything was fresh, very healthy, and just the right quantity. I thought about it all week and wanted to make it back but haven't yet. I will go back though and look forward to it. read more

I cannot say good enough things about this place. This is my first poke place ever, and I believe that I have been spoiled. The three times that I visited I always had the 2 protein bowl. I just switch between the salmon, tuna and eel. The Ahi tuna was always fresh. The miso soup is kept at a perfect dinner and served with appropriately sized tofu and seaweed. Most of the fixings outside of premium items such as avocados and cream cheese are all you can have. Stay away from the masago. I always top mine off with seaweed salad, bonito flakes and shredded nori. The dining area is always neat and clean. It is unfortunately a small establishment so dining for groups over 4 is difficult and sometimes almost impossible. This place is a definite must visit! read more

This place was good! Although, when I read sushi rice I didn't realize it would just be plain rice but it's okay it was still really good. I liked that there were lots of options. For my kids it was a little more difficult to pick a few things, because some things they like normally had some type of spice to it, but we found something that worked well for them! We stopped by here on an errand so I'm not sure if we will be back! But if we are in the neighborhood we are always down for a good poke bowl! read more

My husband brought me here today for a little birthday sushi. We didn't know exactly how to order or what to expect but we're glad to learn it was pretty easy! Very straight forward process, and if you are like me and don't want frills (I'm a rice, salmon, avocado, and cream cheese kind of person), they will accommodate you. The avocado and cream cheese are a little extra so be prepared. The money I paid was a great deal for the belly full of food that I got. The staff was kind, the room was a bit noisy (but to be expected, this is more of a sushi bar atmosphere), very clean, and the price was right! We will be coming back with our kids soon. If you were in doubt or on the fence, don't be; it was great! read more

Overall, I was really really happy with my first experience here. Great food, quick and friendly service, very reasonable price. My review is going to be 3/5 stars. My husband rates it out of 4. I reeeeeally wanted to like Poke bowls. Unsure why but every time that I try one out, the fish never tastes fresh. First time I came it was towards the last hour before closing time and I assumed the fish were out for awhile. But the times after that, it was different times and it was all the same. They are never cold, more like room temperature and I don't know about you but room temperature sea food is gross and too mushy for my liking. I usually get a poke bowl with sushi rice and 2 scoops of ahi tuna (sometimes salmon), basically all their mix ins and toppings and either ponzu or eel sauce on top. Almost $10 a bowl which is average I guess. My husband will the burrito style. I will say that I love their seaweed salad and their pickled radish. Maybe I should just use that as my salad base haha. Another good thing is that they're not stingy with how much food they put in. Mine always look like it's going to overflow. I think if they turn up the AC or even switch out the fish from time to time, it'll be better. read more

Freshness and crisp healthy eating. This is a cool concept, think chipotle but with fish, and Asian options. I always choose the create your own bowl. Great stuff!! Fresh, tasty and healthy. The only draw back is the parking situation but, I can't penalize the restaurant for that issue; hence the 5 stars. The food is very good. I opted for a bowl rather than a wrap; that's what I will order next time. You can totally make this a gluten free dish by opting out of rice and getting lettuce as your base. I highly recommend this restaurant. read more

Hula Poke was great! We stopped in for a late Saturday lunch and loved our poke bowls. We tried the ahi and shrimp tempura and both were excellent. Came here for lunch. Subway for sushi bowls/seaweed wraps! I could have this everyday if this was even an option. Everything was fresh and they had all your favorite japanese style toppings. Basically you select whether you want a wrap or a bowl (over salad or rice). Their proteins are salmon, spicy salmon, tuna and spicy tuna, eel, katsu chicken. They have standard vegetables (including edamame, daikon, pickled stuff, fish roe, seaweed, nori strips. Their dressings are amazing. The house blend is what I went for it had a hint of ginger and sesame oil. This is a great, wholesome meal and I really wish there was more of this kind of poke bowl restaurant in texas. read more

I've visited the sister location (Rolling Fish) many times and have been here twice--the first during opening weekend (woohoo for BOGO!) and the second recently when I was in the area. Firstly, I think it's important to give this PSA/warning: beware of hangry drivers! Parking is tiny and limited because it's shared with other businesses in the shopping center, and it can become even more treacherous during lunch time (store opens at 11am) when hangriness turns into aggressive driving, so please drive carefully. (-1 stars) In terms of food, it is almost exactly the same as the Rolling Fish location! The quality is equally superb and style of ordering is the same poke/sushi version of Chipotle (except the start of the line is at the back of the store with the cash register in front). [I will include my outline on ordering, from my Rolling Fish review but with some tweaks, at the end of this review for those who need some extra help!] TL;DR: Like its sister location, Rolling Fish, this place is like a poke/sushi version of Chipotle and is great for grabbing a quick, healthy, delicious, and affordable meal. Parking is a pain and I recommend being extra cautious in the parking lot--hangry customers = scary drivers! [Ordering outline with tips if you decide to go the "Create Your Own" route, otherwise there are quick and easy "Signature Poke" options too: 1) The big decision: To burrito or not to burrito. For non-burrito options, you can choose between a bowl or salad. (I personally recommend the bowl option because you definitely get more bang for your buck with this form.) 2) Depending on your selection for step#1, bowl-people can choose between noodles, sushi (white) rice or brown rice. Burrito- and salad-people are defaulted to sushi (white) rice or salad mix, respectively. (I personally like the slight chewiness of brown rice, but this is totally up to your preference! No $ saving tips here..I think.) 3) Protein! Pricing depends on this step: $8.95 will give you two scoops of any protein and $10.95 will give you three scoops. You can mix and match or go all the way with one option. (My go-to is 3 scoops of salmon, but then again I could eat salmon all day erry day if my wallet would allow me to.) But for those wary of raw fish, they also have delicious cooked items such as chicken, boiled shrimp, shrimp tempura, eel, crab sticks and tofu. 4) Time to unleash your cravings! As you venture down the assembly line, you can add as little or as many mix-ins, dressings, toppings and crunches as your stomach desires. Beware that two of the items cost extra: avocado ($1.50) and cream cheese ($1.00).] read more

I paid for the Ninja bowl with a extra "scoop" of protein (grand total of 3 scoops) and a water which came out to $16.00. As to the actual flavors of the bowl itself, it's just ok. Definitely better places to go. read more

Love this place. First time I've been to this location. The only reason I didn't give a full 5 stars it's because they're stingy with their protein! I'm visiting from Dallas and although we already have Poké joints as well, I have yet to come across a spot that offers it in burrito form! So this place got pushed up to the top of my list of places to visit in SA just for that experience alone! *Extra point for the nifty machine they have that cranks out a perfect sheet of nori with sushi rice at the press of a button!* They offer very fresh ingredients, generous portions, and with a variety of toppings to choose from. It's definitely the Chipotle or Subway of Poké bowls and sushi, for sure. So make sure you know what you want before you get in line or else the variety of options may overwhelm you, lol! A tad tight in space but a very small complaint in comparison to the friendly service and delicious food! read more
