Wasabi is a hidden gem near the San Antonio Medical Center. The interior is upscale, but not in a stuffed shirt kind of way. The wait staff is impressively nice. We were lucky enough to meet the owner. He was multitasking like a conductor in front of a symphony. We started with gyoza then soup. I had my usual hot and sour. My wife had miso. All were wonderful. Next came the rolls. I had the Stephen Roll, and my wife the Couture Roll. Both rolls were amazing! Everything tasted fresh. Wasabi is now my favorite sushi restaurant. I was beyond disappointed when I came back to Wasabi, I had been here before and the food was always so good! But I came for a business lunch with a client and I told him the food here was delicious, unfortunately this time was not the case. I ordered the dish I always get, grilled steak with vegetables, which normally was steak in cubes, with a good variety of vegetables,but what a got was shaved beef with carrots and onions, the meat look so not appealing, so I asked what changed ? Why the dish is not what it used to be, they said there was new ownership, so apparently they changed the way the make the food. Total bummer, because what I got didn't have any flavor on top of not being what it used to be. Definitely never coming back here. We haven't been here for couple of years, but the quality and taste are still great. The old owner Alex has past away, but the the new owner continues the same traditional foods. Wife and I wanted a relaxed meal after a busy weekend, so we headed to Wasabi! We'd been before and really liked their yellowtail sashimi. The music was audible, but not overbearing. The atmosphere was calm which we greatly appreciated. We were sat in a booth, given waters, miso soup, and salad to start. I also ordered a Kirin Ichiban beer. They brought it out cold and with a cold glass. Wonderfully crisp taste. Our server was nice and ready to answer any questions we might have. The miso soup met expectations. I've definitely had miso that has felt watered down before and that was not the case here. The lettuce in the salad was crisp. We ordered the spicy rainbow roll and crazy salmon roll. You really can't go wrong with rainbow roll and my wife was willing to indulge me and my love for spicy. The rainbow roll is always so fresh and the variety of fish keeps it interesting. The spice was manageable so I of course mixed wasabi and soy sauce for just a hint of sinus clearing tingle at my nostrils. The crazy salmon roll was also delicious! My wife loves a good crunchy roll and both rolls met that goal. Wasabi has become one of our favorite SA sushi spots and we definitely recommend it to our friends and family. Cheers! read more

Great happy hour! Weekdays 4-7 pm. Their sushi was good too! We got the Ikura sushi, salmon sushi, Shibuya roll, yellow tail roll. The fish was fresh! Plus edamame (plain and spicy/garlic). I think next time I'll just get the plain edamame and the garlic one, the spicy was a little too spicy. The jalapeño bombs were great also but insanely spicy for me. Good, friendly service. I would not recommend wasabi, and definitely think there are better options for sushi. I ordered a shrimp tempura roll and was severely disappointed it came wrapped in soy paper which was not specified on the menu. That being said, there was an excessive amount of rice for the roll. The fish quality itself is okay but I don't think I would come back. read more

The food looked very pretty, was nicely packed and everything was intact when it arrived. Probably one of the few places that do a good job with this that I've seen. The food overall was pretty good. The spicy crab avocado salad was better than expected and was filling but plenty of room for the salmon rolls and jalapeño bomb. I like how spicy the food was and had just enough sauce not to be overwhelming. Did order mochi ice cream too and it was alright. Wasabi was my first experience trying Japanese food in San Antonio. I'm very picky when it comes to sushi and I'm more accustomed to sushi back in California so I kept my expectations at a minimum. I ended up choosing this place due to it being in close proximity to where I was and wanted to grab a quick dinner. I will say that I did like the interior of the restaurant especially the booth seating. The service was solid as our waitress that day was very sweet and also very personable. For me my biggest gripe was really the quality of the food and the menu overall. This restaurant advertises themself as a Japanese/sushi restaurant, but then they have a Korean food menu with items like a bulgogi bowl and a Chinese menu which to me is way too much. Plus the restaurant starts to lose an identity with a menu like this. I felt like they would be better if they stuck with what they excel at and their menu is too huge in my opinion. Although I did get a good kick out of them having a sushi roll called the Whatever Roll for those that are indecisive. The items I tried were the Chicken Katsu Don ($10.99) and the Unagi Roll ($9.99). The Chicken Katsu Don was pretty average. Not great or bad. The batter was already pretty soggy by the time I got it, but flavor wise it was still okay. I actually liked their Unagi Roll and you can really taste the fattiness from the eel. I did also try the California Roll from a friend's plate, but I was not a fan mainly because of the taste of the rice being a bit odd. With the Unagi Roll it gets doused with Teriyaki sauce so it masks the flavor of the rice, but rice not being the best in a sushi roll can torpedo the entire dish. I also tried some of my bestfriend's bulgogi bowl and I'm not gonna lie it did not taste like bulgogi at all. Overall my standouts were more on the great service and comfortable environment of the restaurant. The food overall fell flat for me unfortunately, but I still appreciate the service and the manager was also very nice. We forgot something at the restaurant after we left and it was past closing time. I had to drive back as quickly as possible and luckily what was missing was still there and the manager was waiting for us with it. I was pleased with the service and I definitely didn't have regrets trying out Wasabi. read more
