He had poor bedside manners. He belittled other doctors and he undermined my genuine concern. I asked him if he would be doing my surgery in entirety by himself or if there are residents/trainees involved since I do not wish the residents or fellows to do any surgery on me. I understand teaching hospital and I understand training but in this particular surgery I did not wish trainees to work on me. I am scared of robots and it's personal. He could have said sorry my trainees depend on me to teach them and all patients of mine have trainees experience. I would have said thank you but no thanks and left. But instead he started using cutting remarks and mocking my intelligence as well as my concern.He said " residents come and go. It's not that I would leave to have tea with one of your colleagues while residents are doing surgery ". All I wanted was him to tell me if it was possible to not have any trainee at the console of da Vinci robot during the length of the surgery because I as a patient am not comfortable otherwise. Was I asking for too much? And he could have said no and we would have parted ways and I would look for another surgeon. But he had to be sarcastic and demeaning.

FYI, one suggestion, for the surgeon, is the update in the waiting room should be in private. The doctor was talking softly & tried to be private, but the person next to me heard him. I received care at Red Cedar Surgery Center in August 2024. I was required to pay what the center concluded would be my portion up front which I did. In October when I followed up to see if my insurance had covered the portion they expected I was told the insurance never paid. when I contacted the insurance company I was provided written verification that they did in fact pay and that I was owed a refund of over $500. I have called Red Surgery Center every Friday since October and have been repeatedly not responded to, lied to, and misled by the staff. specifically, the check is in the mail, we will overnight the check, it's not us it's the corporate office in Texas......it is now January 2025 and I have not received my refund last week when I called I was told I would have the check this week....its Sunday and no refund. When I told them that I was going to file a complaint with the state licensing agency I was told if I do that I would not get my refund at all. So bottom line if you have pay any portion of your procedure I would not recommend going here.

It has been a giant roller coaster ride of false diagnosis, surgery and general head scatching with my mother. At one point we were told she was in liver failure only to be told oh she just needs an ERCP endoscopy (fail) after that ultrasounds and CT scans. Then she needed another ERCP which did not work either, then it was maybe that her gallbladder needed to come out (it did but bile duct was still blocked). Then they could not figure out what was causing it on a cholangiogram. All of it resulted in a team of docs utterly not knowing what is causing everything at all. We have moved up the chain of doctors at SJM and at the top of the pile is this man, apparently the expert in such matters. He has a good bedside manner, an excellent skill in surgery and a drive to find out all the answers. We have come really far in treatment and my mother no longer resembles a Chiquita banana nor does she do a Exorcist worthy vomiting routine. Small victories but important ones. He has stayed late and come in early to perform surgery and provide other care on my mother. He came himself to check on her during her stays in the hospital, even though his minions had it all covered. The minions and the nurses seem quite starstruck with him, it's kind of interesting to watch. Oddly he is not some stiff in a white coat. He really is informative and warm, reassuring my mother and even offering an arm to walk her out himself. He has even cracked a joke here or there which in my family is a must. He manages to keep us posted without instilling too much fear and helps us understand what is to come which helps a lot in managing fear which is important. We don't really know the outcome of all this yet, not by a longshot but I have faith in Dr Arneson that he is doing his absolute best and that he really cares about trying for the best possible outcome for my mother, no matter what that is. You cannot ask for anything more.
