That is what I will be talking about here. First: PARKING. THANK YOU, Bronson, for having enough handicap spots when I went. They are all right in front, with flat areas and no curbs. I appreciate this. Second: check-in. The staff member was friendly, polite, and quite helpful. She made sure that everyone was completely masked (not an easy task nowadays, although one would hope easier in a hospital). Third: genetic counseling. I hadn't known what to expect, but was a bit worried because of family cancer history. What I got was a complete science lesson, and SO Much compassion and empathy from my genetic counselor, Cynthia Murray. She spent over 90 minutes with me, going through each section we needed to cover, and, with kindness and grace, answered all of my questions. I came in worried and a bit stressed, and left calm and feeling like I could do this. Isn't that what we want, from a medical appointment? She made it perfect (thank you!).

She is kind, compassionate and she listens! She remembers details of my personal life and always shows an interest in my family and what we have been up to. She is people oriented, while at the same time she navigates my cancer treatment and makes difficult decisions about my treatment. She has gone above and beyond in caring for me, even seeing me for a concern I had after a treatment when I didn't even have an appointment! My husband and I just love her and we couldn't be happier to have been placed in her care.

If zero stars was a possible rating, I would give it. Two and a half years ago I went to the Cancer…read moreCenter at Bronson Battle Creek. From day one I should have known to go elsewhere. My PCP ordered an ultrasound of my breast. The ultrasound clearly indicated abnormalities. After doing the ultrasound the radiologist insisted on a mammogram. I expressed my concerns because of the radiation that my breast would be exposed to, but was told that I had no other option in order to get a diagnosis. After receiving the mammogram I was sent back to the room to receive another ultrasound to "get clearer pictures" ???? Two days later I had a biopsy at which time it was confirmed that I had breast cancer. My following PET scan reading indicated that I had stage 3 cancer. The plan that they offered did not sit well with me. I stated that I wanted to receive a targeted therapy without the chemo. The oncologist, Dr. Bhagwati, told me that unfortunately she wasn't able to offer it due to it not being approved by the FDA as a single agent. She said that her "hands were tied." I stated my frustration with the FDA and said that I would consider the plan she had given me. Two weeks later, after choosing not to move forward with the suggested care plan I received a letter of discharge. I was discharged from care at Bronson Battle Creek due to "non-compliance". Apparently I was not permitted to choose not to receive chemo. Fast forward two months. I heard of some people receiving the targeted therapy that I had been seeking as a single agent, so I thought I'd seek elsewhere. One phone call and four days later I was sitting in an office at the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center having a consult. Two hours later I was sitting in an infusion chair receiving the targeted therapy as a single agent. Also, after an out of country hospital that I had gone to expressed their concerns about the possible misread of the original scans, I asked if the U of M radiology team could reread them. Four days later it was confirmed that Bronson had grossly misread the scans. More than 75% of the cancer in my body had somehow been missed. I was stage 4, which is what the second hospital had suspected. The original plan set forth by Bronson Battle Creek would have killed me within months. I can't thank them enough for discharging me from their care. They, in essence, saved my life before I gave them the chance to take it. In the last two and a half years I have met two other people that were severely misdiagnosed at Bronson. I wouldn't go to Bronson Cancer Center if it was the only cancer center in the state. If you have gone there I strongly recommend seeking a second opinion. It could save your life.

I've written about this place on several occasions throughout the last several years as I've…read moreaccompanied a dear friend first to chemo for great cancer and more recently to radiation treatments after it metastasized. Every visit I'm so impressed by the absolute army of volunteers here. You'll first spot folks greeting clients as they walk through the first set of doors, then a person right inside the serving set of doors offers coffee and a mint. Just during my hour or so in the lobby this afternoon I met an amazing volunteer and his sweet golden retriever therapy dog and was offered a snack or drink from a volunteer pushing the snack cart. Then when my friend finished her treatment, the radiation oncologist asked her to stick around so he could answer any questions she had and patiently spent about a half hour going over her scans and answering her questions and mine. I hear this facility is being shuttered because the two hospitals plan to concentrate on their own individual cancer treatment facilities and I think that's such a shame. Life with cancer is epically difficult ... So the convenience of being able to receive chemo and radiation (and see your oncologist) all in the same building staffed but such a compassion group of caregivers is such a blessing.

From the very first phone call with the staff who screens the initial telephone calls, to receiving the email questionnaire, to making the appointment and all the way up until we left the building our entire experience was nothing but pleasant. We met with genetic counselor Carol Christianson who was an obvious pro (Mr. MVP said he would hate to play poker against Carol because she had the most awesome poker face) and knew everything and anything we could ever need or want to know about the genetics of cancer and its associated research. She filled our brains with knowledge that was so helpful we left feeling so much better than we arrived. *The one knitpicky thing I would change is for her to have a few handouts with the facts available for her clients to take home. At the end of the day when I was trying to remember which number and percentage of which gene my parents had questions about I completely could not remember. One piece of paper would really have helped in that situation. I had to have my blood drawn for the genetic test and the staff at WMCC did not even flinch at using my port. They asked a few questions and sent me to the correct place -Sue in Infusion Room 4- and holy moly was Ms. Sue amazing! I had my port started, blood taken and everything flushed before most infusion nurses usually have even taken out their supplies and confirmed my name. We had a longer conversation about Dansko shoes and winter clothing layers then the time it took to have my blood drawn. It was wonderful. Right now we are waiting for the test results, which thankfully the odds are in my favor.
