I've eaten at this location several times and the food is good, the charges reasonable. The main reason I am writing a review is because of the hostess, Misty. I see that Hannah W. did not have a good experience and how many Mistys work at the HuHot? I'm guessing it's just the one. I'm sorry that Hannah W. had such an awful experience. Maybe Misty was having a bad day. I have worked at restaurants in my past and it can seem as if everything happens at the same time. When we arrived a party of thirty was about half done. That party was being served by the young lady who was assigned to us, so Misty got our utensils, drinks and salads. She helped bussing the big party once they left. We left a gratuity, but I wonder if our server split it with Misty. Misty did the majority of the work, which wasn't our server's fault, but Misty stepped up and made our visit an outstanding experience. This country needs more workers like Misty. read more

In the last 2 years I have eaten here twice (2 days ago and today), moved away 2 years ago and have missed this place the most here in Topeka. The food here is as good as you can put it together, it was a bit of trial and error in the beginning. The staff has always been polite and on top of things here. I ordered a salad off the menu and it did not come as advertised in the menu. We also ordered the s'mores dessert which was very disappointing. All of the graham cracker packages had been sliced open and the crackers were soft and stale. We said something to both the server and the manager. Neither would remove the dessert from our ticket, they both just apologized. It will be a long time before we go back if at all. An 8.00 correction on the bill would have rectified the problem. Waited forever to get a table even though plenty were available because the hostess was busy doing something else. Then she wiped down our table right before seating us and it was still wet when we sat down so we had to wipe it down with our own napkins. The food also was just ok with all our plates being quite flavorless. Maybe we just didn't know what we were doing. Perspective from a dasher. Food here is excellent, always made fresh, the wait staff is always visibly busy and hard working. The Grill cooks are ABSOLUTE work horses! (10/10) My issue today was with the manager. I came in at 12:50pm and waited til 1:25 for an order that was due at 1:00. I did so patiently and it wasn't until about 1:15 I asked a waitress to double check on the order for me. I walked around to where I could see the kitchen (wasn't about to leave my customer with cold food along with a 30 minute extra wait) and through the window I could see 2-3 orders on a table waiting. The manager on duty(assuming), who was using a dell laptop on one of the customer tables had gotten up and was the one to bring the order to me. He made an excuse how "it must be the 1 o clock online order rush". I complained that I had been there for 25-30 minutes and that the order should have been ready 15 minutes ago. I stated, that it was a problem. This "gentleman" who was moving on to finally helping the three customers waiting to be seated, decided that he would rather argue and yell at me, than serve his customers, telling me to have my app "decline" orders for his store and he would do the same to "decline" me as a dasher. He felt the need to follow me out the door. PUT HIS HAND ON ME TO TRY AND STOP ME AND CONTINUE THE ARGUMENT, and continued to yell at me as I walked to my car. I have a lot of respect for the franchise, and the people who work at this location, but the manager should be removed, because all that would have been needed was a simple apology that something fell by the wayside. I really like Mongolian BBQ-style places, since I can load up on tons of veggies with delicious sauces. The pre-made sauces that they have a great (and I prefer this to places where you have to concoct your own, possibly disgusting sauce); they are organized from least to most hot, and then supplemented with several flavored oils and lemon juice so that everyone can customize their sauce choices. If you do not want as much sauce as they suggest (3-4 small ladles), tell the grill cooks and they can add water to ensure that your food is cooked. If you are hesitant about making your own stir-fry, the restaurant has menu cards to let you know some tried and true combos--if you do not see them on your table, ask the server. The meat (always chicken, beef, sausage and some type of fish or seafood, plus several other items depending on day and time of meal) and a nice veggie selection (spinach, cabbage, carrots, celery, onions, mushrooms, broccoli, mini corns, water chestnuts, potatoes, cilantro, and other stuff depending on the day) along with firm tofu and 3 types of noodles are varied enough to appeal to most pallets, but I wish the tofu was fried, so that it would stay together when cooked. All in all, a place that I stop anytime in I am in Topeka. read more

Unless you have been here a few times, this place can be a hit or a miss. The restaurant is a buffet style where you select your meats, vegetables and sauces and then the cooks with fry everything up for you. What makes it a hit or miss is the sauces and the different combinations that you can make. Select the wrong sauces and you'll have something that tastes like crap. But with a little practice, you will find what you like. The food selection is great. They typically have pork, chicken, beef, crab, and salmon for meats. They have 3 different kinds of noodles, and about 10 different kinds of vegetables. There is also about 20 different sauces that you can select from. The restaurant is fairly busy during lunch, there are days where we have waited up to 20-30 minutes in line to get our food cooked. But if you get there outside of the rush, then you can be thru the buffet and have your meal ready to eat in about 10 mins. read more

I took my mother n law and her friend there with my family for lunch. It took for ever for someone to come over and sit us. It took even longer for someone to come get us drinks. When we went to go through the buffet they were out of beef. Not sure how u can run out of meat on a Saturday at a restaurant. I hope it gets better. I'd give a -5 if I could‼ Let me start by saying I've been a faithful HuHot customer for YEARS! It's been a regular stop for me & my lady friend since we started dating over two and a half years ago. We came here on our very first date we've loved this restaurant since we first set foot in it. The service was always great and the servers always get at least a $10.00 tip from me. Once a young man (obviously inexperienced) got a$10.00 tip, not because he was good but because he tried & more importantly he was kind, just plain KIND & it made all the difference. My job requires a lot of travel and any time I see a HuHot restaurant, I stop and get a great bite of food to eat. The servers in Topeka used to call me by my first name because when I get good service, I tip WELL. Sooo.....after getting some unexpected time off, my lady and I decided to have our favorite, HuHot. It was great, got it grilled & it was looking like a perfect supper was in store for us. I got a coke/Pepsi & she ordered a Dr Pepper. I told the waiter that I drink a lot when I eat & I was assured I'd be taken care of. So, after about two bites of food, I drank the last drop. I saw the waiter look as the ice crashed back down into the glass, (a sound I used to key into when I waited tables). He looked away and turned his attention to a table of three or four girls, flirted with them & refilled their glasses. I couldn't blame him, they were a lot easier to look at than me, I'm sure. Though it was a little creepy because they were so young. Then he again looked at my empty glass & then turned to the table behind the young ladies and proceeded to watch some video the customer was watching. They talked for a few moments, laughed & he looked at my empty glass AGAIN and then proceeded to the hostess station where he leaned over and started a leisurely conversation with her. I got up, walked over to them and asked if I could get another soda. I didn't say "please" because at that point he'd seen the empty glass at least three times and a customer should NEVER have to leave their table, walk across the restaurant & ask a server for a refill. It's inexcusable in a near buffet setting. Then, without an apology, or even so much as a "yes" he took the glass and said "yeah". As if I had offended him. I won't say (at least at this point) that he was being outwardly rude, but if NOT he was at least completely inept at best. He brought the drink, set it on the table and with a passive aggressive tone said, "here's your drink" He set it on the table & walked away. Now let's be honest here, wouldn't you think he would have said something to the effect of, "sorry I missed that" or "my apologies for not getting that sooner" Keep in mind I DID inform him at the start that I drink a lot during my meals. Let's also not forget that this isn't a job that's hard to do well. What do they do other than get drinks refill drinks, appetizers and a little bowl of rice. Its not like a real server who gets drinks, gets apps, salads, main courses, refills drinks brings deserts & manages to still provide great customer service. I mean the dude would starve with the service he gave us. Now for he finale, (yes it got even worse), he proceeded to fill three, yes THREE glasses, brought them to the table, slammed them down, (no, seriously he SLAMMED them down, spilling some and said, "here's your drinks!" In the MOST aggressive tone I have experienced from ANY server EVER IN MY ENTIRE LIFE! Had we not been in a restaurant I would have tattooed him right then and there. Then he walked away, (walking away at that point was the smartest decision he's ever made in his life, I promise you). I talked to the manager, even told him to check the film & he'd SEE, I was telling him the absolute truth. He didn't seem too keen on doing that. Hmmmmm, I wonder why...? He comped the meal and we left. The manager only apologized for the servers behavior but gave me the impression he really didn't care & that NOTHING would be I don't want an apology, I don't want a free meal or a sympathetic statement, (sympathetic can't be spelled w/o pathetic). What would I like? I'd like you to know that the waiter and the half-a-manager have lost you TWO life-long customers FOREVER. I'd also like you know that the things they say about good and bad service is TRUE; someone with good service will tell 10 out of 100 people about it but someone with bad service will tell 95 out of 100 & this time is NO different except I intend to tell 100 out of 100. I will NEVER be back to another HuHot as long as I live-THATS how bad of an experience this was. Feburary 23rd from 3:45-4:30. Check the tape, if I'm wrong, I'll gladly pay the bill. Waiter had a weak beard, looked to be about 28-35. We were at the middle booth by the window on the bar side. Why'd I wait so long to post this? I have come here often and I always enjoy the atmosphere. It is as if you are eating inside a painting class. Every item you add is your own idea and you have the ability to truly be the master of your own work with very minimal but effective guidance. The process of making your dinner is simple enough and fun. In my most recent visit we had a large party, which is not terribly extraordinary for this restaurant. We had no reservation, under quoted the table size by four because the event host does not know how to plan. This considered we were promptly accommodated. The food quality was the same as always. This night was a rare exception and for once I came during the dinner of which the complimentary soup was terrible and very sodium rich. For everything being so good, why use the same egg drop soup as everyone else? I digress. Because my nephew and niece are spoiled little brats, they couldn't eat what everyone else was eating. Of COURSE they needed a chicken strip platter. No bother to me, but apparently they had to wait until we were practicality done eating to get their food. I couldn't care less and would have chalked it up to these kids needing to learn to eat what everyone else does, but it was a nice touch when the manager recognized that their ticket time was slow and offered us free desert in the way of smores. While I have to question the judgement of giving my kin fire and marshmallows that can be turned into flaming meteorites in a nice restaurant, it was nice not needing to complain had I wanted to. One annoyance, I wish there was some other pricing besides coming as an all you can eat buffet. Look, I get it, it's Topeka by God. You have to cater your meals to your audience but not everyone is going to go through and get five 3,000 calorie miniature Mt. Suribachi's (which I always want to plant a chopstick in for Corps and country.) I also realize that half of the patrons feel the need to eat the caloric intake of Michael Phelps during the Olympics in one sitting. But this is no reason I should have to pay higher prices. Can't I just pay for one plate? Maybe I don't want to help supplement someone getting diabetes. I understand those Mongolians are communist Chinese but this is America. (What's that? Mongolia isn't in China? All the more reason not to be communist. 'Murica!) In summary, I know every time I come here there will be a level of standard that makes this place "good." the food selection is wide, the flavors bountiful, the process is unique. I'm not sure why this restaurant gets such high reviews from friends who have dined here. Is only because it is all you can eat? I went here for Sunday lunch.The restaurant is not clean. Floor at meat, noodle and vegetable bar was sticky. I saw a person pick up food with her fingers from this food bar.The employee refilling the bar had bad body odor. The walls at our booth were grimy. Looking along the wall from our booth to the west side of the restaurant, I saw that the walls were dirty and grimy all the way down the south side of the room. Food was OK, but Sunday lunch cost $12. I don't think what I had was worth that amount of money. Does anyone think to wipe down the counter where people place their food bowl for the grill? I didn't see it cleaned one time while I was there with lots of people waiting for their food. People leaning on the counter, some with their hands on the counter. Wipe it down occasionally, please. The cooks place your food on a hot grill, then proceed around the table stirring and flipping food that was placed there before yours. The use the same spatulas on all the food to stir it. When Yours is finished, they scoop it into a plate, then spray water onto the grill and scrape it down before placing someone else's food where your food had been just moments before. I suggest that you go elsewhere there are lots of good restaurants in that area. Food falls out of the plastic bowls that you put your food in. read more

HuHot is a really easy place to feed a vegan. There is tofu on the food line and you can go to their website and see what allergens are in each dish including as well as what your calorie/nutrition etc. HuHot is a chain restaurant -- I'm not sure people are aware of that. The food is good once you've had some practice with the sauces -- I have spent a lot of time tasting every sauce individually (we eat here at least twice a month -- its hard to feed vegans in Topeka). If you've never had mongolian before, the staff will explain it to you (They'll ask you if you've been there before when you arrive.) There are also "recipes" for flavor combinations on your table and above the sauce bar so you don't have to go in blind. Don't be intimidated by the make your own bowl of food concept -- we took my 87 year old grandmother who is definitely NOT a try new things sort of person and she loved it. If you don't like spicy food, stick to the sauces at the start of the sauce line -- they get spicier as you move forward. I always recommend draining off most of the oil and getting a good scoop of garlic when using the garlic oil. The peanut sauce should be used mostly alone but will lead to a pretty heavy dish so a ladle of lemon juice goes really well with it. I would avoid the Asian Coconut that is currently the special season offering. It tastes weirdly metallic. My favorite sauce combo is 3 Khan's Favorite, 2 Hoisin, 1 Garlic Bean, 1 Szechuan, and 1 drained scoop of garlic oil. When I am not trying to eat healthy or on a cheat day of my diet, I enjoy the Peanut Sauce. read more

Couldn't be a more enjoyable "do it yourself" restaurant in town. Obviously aimed towards Asian foods, but you can create anything. Great place for vegetarians, or people who want meat only. Have an allergy? Tell them, and when they cook it you'll see how they pride themselves in avoiding cross contamination. Only tip. Be sure you use three scoops of oil with whatever other flavours you choose. The oil prevents the food from possibly burning, but if you don't like your dish just make another! I'm not a huge fan of AYCE Mongolian BBQ as it seems to get monotonous after the first round, but I tried this place for a change. The drill is similar other such places - pick a bowl and fill it with different meats and vegetables top off with noodles then add sauces as per your taste from mild to hot and finally have the food cooked on a open grill. They have a range of sauces but what stood out to me was the "Burn your village BBQ" which had a nice spicy tang to the traditional BBQ taste so i would recommend that you try that for sure. The grill is deep inside the restaurant and as I was given a place close to the grill by the time I fished my meal and got out i literally had the smell of BBQ in my clothes so my advise would be to get a seat a little further from the grill. Also as we inched towards closing time the number of chefs working the grill was down to one which did not provide him sufficient time to correctly work the number of dishes that he was multitasking on and my last round ended up getting a little over done. Overall not bad place to have a meal once in a while. read more
