I'd heard Hugo's was great for sandwiches. My husband and I split a large Grinder. It had Italian meats and a cheese. Lettuce, tomato, onion. The menu board read vinegar but we had mayo and mustard and a pickle slice. Maybe the gal got mixed up. The sandwich was good on the white bread roll. Price was decent for the size and amount of meat. It was tastier than a a subway and blimpe. They make battered fries that were very tender. We ate there, place isn't spectacular but looked clean. Hugos! It's a place you will yern to come back to. It's like going to your grandparents (nonni) house and stepping in granpas work shop in the garage. Things are made there...it's the source of smells that spark core memories....a treasure trove of experience and know how. Hugos....you are the grandpas workshop of sammi knowledge. But don't get pigeon holed into just getting a sammi, because Hugos got some pressure fried deli fries and chicken that will knock your socks off. I can't believe it took me so long to try this place out. We moved close by it a year ago and finally tried it out. No only are they great for sandwiches, but they have fried chicken which is amazing, finger steaks that you can buy by the pound, and of course their home made and cut fries which are my favorite part. I also love that you can buy meat and cheese by the pound. My kids love the finger steaks ( and once again I love I can order 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 or a full pound of them. I can get my other son a piece of fried chicken and we can get sandwiches and all share fries. It's a perfect place for us to get a family meal (with everyone getting what they wanted) and to get some lunch meat and cheese for making sandwiches at home. read more

I've frequented Hugo's for over 25 years as it's close to my office. The sandwiches are always good and I LOVE the fries! Met a friend for lunch this week. Lunch was fine but the fact that we were both freezing, with our coats on, was a bummer. We scarfed down our lunch and retreated to our car with full on heat! We came here today for lunch and so glad we did. This is a locally owned place which I love and had such a great experience. Walking looks like it should a deli meat counter with all the meat and cheese on display. They also specialize in fried chicken and hand cut fries but will wait for another time for that. We absolutely loved my sandwich and so did my wife. Plus we also tried the homemade macaroni salad and pasta salad. Both were absolutely delicious! You can tell the freshness in everything they do here. The service for sure 5 star! Everyone here was so nice and friendly. I we will for sure be back!! This was my favorite sandwich shop, thirty years. I went on Monday for lunch (4-29-24) and my sandwich was lacking in all the ingredients of a sandwich except the bread. It's my assumption that they have sold and no longer care about food quality. Less than half the meat or other ingredients as normal. Five stars if you change, zero returns if you don't. read more

Hugo's Deli On 2/11/21, I bought $32+ of food at Hugo's Deli in Boise, which included pretty much everything except a sandwich. Overall, I was disappointed. The two items I did like were the fried chicken breast ($3.59) and the fries ($1.82). The fries come with the option of their homemade fry sauce and "spicy ketchup." I tried both. I like the fry sauce, which has barbecue sauce added to it. I was surprised to find that the "spicy ketchup" is nothing more than cocktail sauce. I was not so impressed with either item that I see myself returning for them. The kielbasa sausage ($1.44) looked good but had little flavor and was overwhelmingly "fatty." I took one bite and was done with it. I was told none of the sides/salads, with the exception of the coleslaw ($1.93) are made there. They are from Sysco I'm pretty sure the slaw dressing isn't made there either. Although the cabbage in the coleslaw seemed relatively fresh, it was overly dressed. The potato salad ($2.30) was okay. I didn't like the macaroni salad ($2.07) at all. The only item I cared for was the baked beans ($3.71). I was told they make their macaroni and cheese ($2.64) in the house. It was not exceptional in anyway. It tasted better than next day after I added salt to it. I had assumed the soups were made in house. I wish I would've asked before ordering them because I could tell simply from looking at them that they were not. I got a small Split Pea and Tomato Basil with Pasta ($2.95 each). Neither one was good. The desserts are made by a former employee. I bought the Carrot Cake ($3.39) and an Eclair ($1.99). I didn't like either one. The carrot cake was overly sweet. The eclair looks good, but the puff pastry seems stale and the filling was "meh." ImHugo's Deli is a business I wanted to try for years. Although I did not order a sandwich, based on the large variety of food that I did try, as well as the quality of their deli meat, and how overpriced the food is, the majority of which is not even made in-house, I'm not inclined to give it a second chance. Always had good experiences... until today. Ordered a Santana and wanted mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomato, and pepperjack instead of provolone. My fiancé also ordered his sandwich to have pepperjack instead of provolone. The person making our food even repeated our order. Got home and went to eat our food and we both were given provolone, and I got no mayo, mustard, lettuce or tomato. It might not sound like a big deal, but when I'm spending over $30 for two sandwiches and some sides to go, which in this economy is pretty pricey, I would hope my food would at least be made correct. Fellow Utahn here. Came far to come to the main attraction; which was Hugo's! This food was phenomenal. Crispy wedge fries were served with the meal and uniquely flavored fry sauce. I was thrilled to enjoy this meal with family and it was so worth it. Staff was very quick paced and with the lunch rush and they did great with getting our meal prepared to perfection. I have seen the way negative reviews are responded to by whoever responds to these. So I have removed my previous more honest review for fear of the response. I already have been made to feel small by this company today and I'd rather not a second time, especially for the money I spent. This review is for the consumers. I'll keep details to myself for fear of being blasted (that should tell you something, reader and you should check out their responses across the board on their platforms) . But I truly believe there are so many wonderful, kind and fantastic local businesses in this area to give your hard earned money to... this isn't one of them. Especially if you can't bring feedback without being met with inconsideration and snark. There is one beaming light in this business and it is their night manager. That man should run this space, he has heart and care and that is obvious. After years of going to the meridian locations, the foul experience at this location has kind of cured me from all of them right now. Having supported Hugo's Deli for years at the 5 Mile and Oberland location. We have had bad experiences the last 3 time we have supported this once Great establishment. Thw quality and service has been sub par compared to what we are use to. Either the order is wrong, poorly made, to having to repeat an order 3-4times when there isn't alot of customers around, to being treated like we are a inconvenience to them. I have attempted to reach out to management but always get excuses and no resolution. It pains me to report any of this because I've grown up loving this establishment and supporting a local business. Was fairly busy as it should be during the noon hour on a Friday. The Gentleman in front of us wanted an order of 3 pounds of fries for 1pm, which I thought was interesting because we had heard about the fries here, and boy was that right on! Not only a fantastic taste (what all is in the SEASONING?!)and smoothly cooked, but THE FRY SAUCE(and I've had some good fry sauces-Freddy's comes to mind) IS THE BEST I'VE EVER TASTED! What a terrible experience! I cannot believe this restaurant has decent reviews because based on our visit, one star is generous. To begin with, Hugo's Deli is expensive, especially for a sandwich shop. A meal of a sandwich, chips, and drink will run about $10.00. With three sandwiches, three drinks, three bags of chips, and a corn dog, the bill was $36.00. I suppose I could justify that price for a truly delicious sandwich, but that was simply not the case. Our party ordered a "pilgrim" (turkey, cranberry sauce, cream cheese and sprouts), a Reuben, and a turkey-bacon-avocado sandwich, as well as a corn dog for the preschooler. The Pilgrim was true to its name because without neighbors who were willing to share their food, I might have starved. It was tiny! When I order a six dollar sandwich, I expect more than a slender, 4 1/2 or 5 inch tea sandwich. What's more, inside was a meager shaving of turkey, so little that I could not taste it over the cream cheese and cranberry sauce (I actually opened the sandwich to check because I thought they might have forgotten the turkey altogether). The turkey-bacon-avocado was slightly better, but the bacon had clearly been (over) cooked a long while before, and to such a degree that it shattered like glass when you bit into it. The Reuben was probably the worst of all, though, and was a true crime against delis everywhere. EVERYONE knows a Reuben is a GRILLED sandwich. Always. Yet for some reason, they took COLD, DRY, rye bread, slapped on some COLD corned beef and cheese, squirted on bottled thousand island dressing, and called it good. As they placed it in the tray, I looked at it and the girl asked, "Um, did you want me to microwave that?" I told her no thanks. But the most egregious, unforgivable thing was that she DROPPED one of our sandwiches ON THE FLOOR. I saw it. She knew I saw it. But she did not even offer to remake it. To be fair, it was wrapped, but STILL!! I looked at my tray and asked where the corn dog I'd ordered was, and the cashier said "I didn't charge you for it, so if you want it, you'll have to pay." Since she took my order, I thought she'd ring it up right, but that was apparently too much to expect. Instead of making it right, she made me run my debit card for a second transaction, even though it was her mistake. It seemed tacky. Our stellar dining experience had one final sparkling touch. As we were eating, the three workers were having a loud conversation about how you pronounce the word "gyro." One girl observed (and not in an "inside" voice) that she could never order them because "I ways think I'm getting a 'GYNO,' like gynecologist!" Lovely. The restaurant is grungy, worn, and generally unappealing. It's the kind of place that needed a serious update ten years ago, and now it's fallen into such disrepair, a total overhaul would be necessary to make it nice. The environment is what you might expect from an inner-city bus station cafe, but with even less charm. Hugo's Deli is a mere stone's throw from our house, and were it even just mediocre, I'm sure we'd be back, but it was epically bad and nothing could entice me to return. I notice the place is fairly dirty, floors, tables, and then I check the bathrooms. As pictured the sink was gross and I dared not take a pic of the toilet, how is this possible though? They just had opened ... I was one of the first people in which must mean people are not trained in cleaning or just neglected it. **Food/Service 1 Star I was helped quickly and navigated through the maze of confusing menu boards and price signs. I opted for the French dip with no onion, it was made fairly quickly and served warm w Au jus. The sandwich it self was nothing special and the aujus had a tangy pickly taste that overpowered it. My guess is too much peppercinni juice or left them in to long when cooking the sauce. My service was good but I noticed many of the girls just standing and talking to each other and laughing, even with 6 girls when it came to lunch rush they seem to not be very efficient. They share a 3 foot sandwich board and customers had to just stand while room was made for their sandwich to begin "construction". ** FOOD SAFETY FAILS I did witness many hand washings and changing of gloves as required, sadly that all is voided by the fan blowing near the slicer and sandwich table. (As pictured) What was worse is the bacon tub filled with bacon sitting out, keep in mind I was there for an hour or more. No way was that bacon temping hot or cold enough to fight bacteria, that is just gross and will get someone sick. My sister took me here while I was visiting the area and we had the BBQ chicken special and fries. Let me just say that it's absolutely AMAZING that they have 2-3 pieces of BBQ chicken for $1 as a lunch special. YUM! Plus, the fries are great! They're crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, almost like a baked potato. I love fries and these are mighty tasty.
