Old Red Barn Auction - A really good country auction.

While not Christies, this is a very professional and upscale auction in Orange County, NY…read more Finding it takes you along some lovely country roads, but keep your eyes on the road, lots of wildlife, think deer, out for an evening stroll. While the website (www.oldredbarnauction.com) gives you a good idea on whats going to be put up at the monthly (1st Sat of the month) auction, going there is a better idea. You can really see things and look them over carefully. They allow you in, give as much time as you would like and are helpful if you have questions. They have many pieces of furniture, much from older estates being sold. Some come in on consignment. There is artwork there, often some interesting pieces. They have old stoneware on occasion. Stamps come in from local dealers. China sets from "the old country" (which could be Russia, Belgium, Greece and any country in-between). Glassware from the 1920's. Leaded glass. Chandeliers. Some things will go for $10, others for $1,000. I have seen a few things go for much more. VIEWING is usually Friday afternoon before the auction, and Saturday afternoon just prior. Cash, MC, Visa, NO AMEX, local checks 15% BUYER'S FEE - I don't think there is a discount for cash. Seating is not super comfortable. but if you get there early enough its manageable. Or you can stand in the back area. Get there early on Saturday, parking will be difficult, at best. That's one annoying thing. The other is the cost of the food they serve. Ludicrous, and not good enough for the price. 5 stars because you don't go for the parking and food anyway, the auctioneer is good and he keeps things moving along.

We chose the pick up option to avoid trucking our stuff there. Very pleased with our proceeds and Red Barn service. We received a check with no follow up. Give it a try if your furnishings are in good shape.

Have been dealing with auctions for some time and I have got to say that this was a pleasure. The…read moreitem was described accurately and was shipped well packed and arrived safely. Spoke to the owner several times and he seemed very black & white answering questions as accurately as the listed descriptions on the site. Site was kinda confusing at first but I got the hang of it. Now have attended 3 online auctions and am shocked at the items he brings to auction (would expect several to be at Christie's or Swan). Bottom line is that Scott Daniel's is a premier auction house and they are experts! Just as a note did not want to promote this since it may bring more bidders - which is bad for me - but I did promise to do it. Sooooo Walter

I had a similar experience to that of another person who reviewed Scott's business. Several years…read moreago, Scott was very helpful in helping me ship the furniture from my mother's estate from California to High Falls. He auctioned it effectively but when he had the proceeds on hand, he paid me in dribs and drapes, a fraction of what he owed me, and then stopped responding to my pleas for full payment. I think he was experiencing serious personal and financial problems, but never came clean with me and I suspect the money he still owes me will never be paid. He's both a seemingly nice guy and also a con man who always had a dramatic story about why he couldn't pay me and when his court cases would be resolved and payment would follow. I feel sad for Scott but also wish he'd paid me the money he owed me.
