The only people who deserve any criticism are those who purchase items there and leave what they have purchased in the auction all for weeks on end cluttering up the place. While the website (www.oldredbarnauction.com) gives you a good idea on whats going to be put up at the monthly (1st Sat of the month) auction, going there is a better idea. You can really see things and look them over carefully. They allow you in, give as much time as you would like and are helpful if you have questions. They have many pieces of furniture, much from older estates being sold. Some come in on consignment. There is artwork there, often some interesting pieces. They have old stoneware on occasion. Stamps come in from local dealers. China sets from "the old country" (which could be Russia, Belgium, Greece and any country in-between). Glassware from the 1920's. Leaded glass. Chandeliers. Some things will go for $10, others for $1,000. I have seen a few things go for much more. VIEWING is usually Friday afternoon before the auction, and Saturday afternoon just prior. Cash, MC, Visa, NO AMEX, local checks 15% BUYER'S FEE - I don't think there is a discount for cash. Seating is not super comfortable. but if you get there early enough its manageable. Or you can stand in the back area. Get there early on Saturday, parking will be difficult, at best. That's one annoying thing. The other is the cost of the food they serve. Ludicrous, and not good enough for the price. 5 stars because you don't go for the parking and food anyway, the auctioneer is good and he keeps things moving along.

The merchandise runs the gamut, and I've made some great purchases, from the 14 identical vintage Banana Republic bags to the ephemera lot that included a signed letter from Dame Maggie Smith to the bolt of 1950s atomic cloth to the bronze elephant pedestal that I still haven't found a place for. The auctions move at a nice clip, so you won't be there all day. Pick-up can be a little slow and hectic, but it should be expected in auctions where there are more than 500 lots for sale. I can't recommend JMW enough if you're furnishing a home, reselling at your vintage shop, collecting odd items, or you just like to see what's out there.

Flannery's is one of the exceptions. I have been attending auctions in the area regularly for the past 10 years. Flannery's is one of the few auction halls that I've been to in my life that I don't feel like I'm being misled. I've been picking for a long time and have been to auction halls both big and small from coast to coast. Marianne and her staff are top notch. She seems to really look out for her staff and respects the people that work for her. This is rare in the auction business too. Best of all for me is that it is a quick drive from home.
