    Parmesan biscuit and tea

Nice spot to grab a quick coffee or sit down and enjoy the ambiance and people watch in downtown. The Parmesan biscuits are to die for!

Chill pad for some smooth coffee! I stopped in for some coffee and stayed for a sausage egg loaf. A great little hipster coffee joint for those trying to escape the Seattle Siren. I'll be back all week during my business trip for sure.

With beans from Bozeman and loose leaves from Beverly Hills, and odd bits and pieces of bikes hanging around, you just know that this place is hip. "Hip" is hard to define, and while it's usually thought of as a positive thing, sometimes it serves as a stand-in for snobbish or elite. While the beans and tea are from places a tad full of themselves, Helena - where Hub is - definitely is not. It's cool but in an unpretentious way. And it's living in the twenty-first century, not stuck in nineteenth-century Western nostalgia. OK: parts of Helena are very into the Lewis and Clark/Great Northern/mining and logging town past. That's true. But just not at Hub. It's a new operation - in its second year - and definitely deserves to be called hip: stone floors, big windows, minimalist decor with art, posters, and wifi password information on the walls, a cherry-red La Marzocco machine showing itself off on the counter across from an attractive display of Theo chocolate bars. Ghost Town Roasting beans in bags share space with Hub gear and Art of Tea tins, while good music you've probably never heard before floats through the wide open spaces between mounted speakers and your waiting ears. A few black leather chairs and couch offer some softness from all the metal, stone, and glass, but they too are lean and clean: a Bauhaus meets Montana sort of thing. And the coffee and tea are fine - good raw materials, good preparation, sturdy black mugs to consume them in while the musics plays and the sun shines and it's 28 degree outside and you're reading the New Yorker in your new best friend, the black leather armchair next to the storefront window. Empty coffee bags hang from the exposed ceiling, adding a touch of tropical warmth into the sleek Rocky Mountain surroundings. A place is hip if it looks as cool as you feel, if the beans and leaves are fresh and fair, if the atmosphere doesn't overwhelm the customer, and if you feel like you belong there even if you are just a casual stranger. A place like that is not snobbish or elite. You don't feel like you're superior or inferior to anyone else. You're all there for the same thing: something good to drink, someplace fun to be, a little elbow room to be yourself, and lots of unscheduled time to unwind: like a bunch of electrons hanging around at a lower energy state but getting ready to leap, jump, and play at some point not too distant in the future. I'll bet you could use a hub like that, now and again, at home or on the road. I certainly do. It's why I came here.

Watered down iced latte. Looked and tasted more like a coffee with a dash of milk and water.

The last time I came in I ordered a matcha and asked for them to put in less milk as I have gathered from previous times that their drinks are weak, but when I got my drink, it was straight up milk. I went to the barista and asked if I could have more matcha and she charged me as though I had asked for a shot. Whatever, totally fine. But when I got it back, it was the same color and taste. Yesterday, I went in with my boyfriend wanting to give them another chance, and my matcha (as shown in my picture), was straight up milk. My boyfriend went to the counter and asked for extra matcha. They then proceeded to charge him for an entire drink, but ONLY gave us the matcha. lol... no milk, no ice, just matcha. But charged us full price. He also had ordered a latte with an extra shot that for a 12 oz cup, was super weak. We really want to support this place but they need to fix their ratios or something...

Wow--Steve's Cafe has always been my #1 pick for great food in Helena, but after my experience…read moretoday, I'm doubtful...My server, Dawn, left me alone for most of my visit; she served me with the bare minimum, & seemed unwilling or unable to answer the simplest menu questions about 2 items I hadn't tried before: The Cafe Monte Cristo is served on French Toast as a sandwich. She felt that was self-explanatory, so I took a chance & ordered it anyway. The second item I asked about was the Cafe Mocha, which is described as half coffee & half hot chocolate. Dawn repeated that to me; I went ahead & ordered it, because it's a nippy day outside, it sounded good, & Steve's prides itself on "whole bean Italian coffee". Dawn asked if I wanted whipped cream, & yes--that was the best part of this hot drink. It tasted like hot water with a bland chocolate flavor with no coffee flavor to be savored. Disappointment in a mug for $3.75. The Cafe Monte Cristo Sandwich looked promising when it arrived...but when I tasted it, the only thing which was flavorful was the bacon. The ham & turkey sliced deli meat was absolutely indistinguishable for any flavors of ham or turkey! ($14.95; scarcely any powdered sugar on the French Toast, either, which is a hallmark of a Monte Cristo...& no, it isn't deep-fried in any batter, but the French Toast is a clever substitution & departure from the original.) I ate half of it & boxed the other half...the French Toast was bland, too--very little flavor. My side item was something I always look forward to here, because so few restaurants serve onion rings anymore! These are a $2.00 up charge, & I told Dawn I like them on the light side, not too dark--& these came out close to being dark, & they must have sat in the grease, because they were tough on the outside...not the best onion rings by far. Disappointment again! I came here anticipating another great experience at Steve's Cafe, & it was completely disappointing until Alivia appeared: Alivia noticed I appeared to be waiting, & I was--because I saw on my check that the Cafe Mocha comes with ONE REFILL! Dawn never mentioned nor offered me a refill, but Alivia did--& yes, that's exactly how to spell her name, which is pronounced as "Olivia". Alivia gave me a to-go cup with a lid, & whipping cream & all, that excellent but of genuine "Customer Service" kept this review from being one star! Purely because of Alivia, I will return to Steve's Cafe the next time I'm in Helena, a 100+ miles from home! Thank you, Alivia, for saving the day for me: The next time, I'm asking for you as my server!
