Travers Park has been a fixture in the Jackson Heights community for the better part of the last 70…read moreyears. It has been a haven for outdoor everything (#1), an ideal spot for the youngins to unleash some energy, and is the site of the weekly Jackson Heights Greenmarket (#2). Named after the local community icon Thomas Travers, it was unveiled to the public in 1949. After a few facelifts in the past few decades, it's become one of the more utilized parks in the borough. Most recently there has been some serious renovation to improve the playground and the half acre of land known as Rory Staunton Field. Fast forward to 2022, it all looks lovely. At just over 2 acres, it's sizable for NYC standards. There are a lot of areas to lounge and lay out, a handful of chess tables, a sprawling kid's area, and plenty of benches to sit on. It's a great people watching area and is in the quieter part of the neighborhood; a stone's throw away from the congestion of Roosevelt Ave. In addition the farmer's market on the weekends, there has been Summer Sundays in the Park, which are seasonal performances put on by local Queens non-profits. This is one of the few places I'd recommend for folks to come check out on a casual weekend. The transformation was truly amazing where there is a beautiful grassy lawn along 34th Ave., PLENTY of nice clean, new benches to lounge on by yourself or with family and friends, new playground equipment and sprinklers, tennis courts (whereas before was just ugly plain asphalt), and long picnic tables, chess tables, and even an amphitheater space. AND ... *drumroll*.... YES, TWO dog runs (1 for smaller dogs and the other for larger)!!! Other Jackson Heights residents and I really pressed our local government to please provide and they delivered!!! These 2 dog runs are side by side and occupy what used to be 1 of 2 handball courts (1 still remains). These dog runs have a long hose that runs water to clean off these grounds and provide drinking water for dogs who visit. (And of course, it has a large poop bag dispenser right in front in case any owner forgot to bring theirs from home!) And YES, there are events that occur during the warm weather months in this park. NOW WHERE IS AN UPDATED MAP OF THIS GORGEOUS PLACE - ???

The NYC parks dept gets high marks for keeping the park clean and updated as nothing looks rundown or missing . After doing a bunch of shopping in the area I stopped by for an hour to enjoy my gelato cup while an intense basketball game was going on with guys and gals shooting many bricks . The stroller moms were out in force at the park while the little brats were running around the playground area having fun . I like this park in Astoria as it's my chill out and relax place when I need some alone time during the day . 4.5 stars on my yelp meter .

The landmark of central Riverdale…read more Although the bell tower is considered a "park" I can't concieve actually hanging out there on one of the benches and reading or any other relaxing activity one would partake in at a park considering it's smack in the middle of the traffic circle (if you can even call it that...because a proper one does not have traffic lights) where Johnson Avenue/Henry Hudson Parkway East, Riverdale Avenue and 239th Street converge. Hardly peaceful to say the least. During the holidays it's decorated with Christmas stuff and a giant menorah which is a nice touch.

NYC Parks can do a lot better with this historic playground and has been treated as an afterthought just as Robert Moses planned when he built the BQE.

Plenty of space to roam with a large area that holds concerts sponsored by the NYC parks dept , large baseball and football field, playground area for kiddies , sections to have picnics and barbecues, etc. well maintained by the parks dept and police roam along frequently which I assume is routine. Obviously it's next to the Queensboro Bridge of course. Their sometimes will be concerts and there's some athletic fields. Convenient to get to from the Queens end of the bridge. It basically is the area north of it. This is along the East River. Across it you can see Manhattan. Between this is Roosevelt Island. This view is the best part. It gets kind of noisy because of the traffic from the bridge. This isn't exactly such a good place for hanging out and chilling. It only takes a few minutes getting to once you get off the bridge. Other than concerts there's not much to see in the park itself. There's athletic fields and a playground.

Our team of five used to be a force to play against, all who had played organized ball, myself the weakest offensive link at the power forward position. (But I could really crash the boards) The rims were so tight here, actual lines painted upon the blacktop, top of the key, etc. I loved hooping it up here and marvelled at the cleanliness, the young families coming out with their little ones, older folks chatting in the mid-day sun. And the chugga chugga turning of the LIRR train wheels.. Very NYC!

There's still other ways to get in that have no gates. But it's a start. Hopefully they can fix this by next year. The playground and swing sets are in good condition. The restroom is fairly clean for a public park restroom. I've seen far worse. I have a few complaints about this park. The honking from the traffic. There should be a no honk sign in this residential section of Austin St. Nearly every car and especially during rush hour, everybody honks at the stop sign intersection. The LIRR is already disturbing enough, add honking from impatient motorist just makes things ten times worse. I also often witness road rage in front of the park. It's a one lane, one way street towards Ascan Ave and whenever one person is parallel parking, everyone behind goes bonkers and often leading to verbal outrage. My second complaint would be the crosswalk, again, because of the traffic and idiotic drivers, there should be more signs to yeild to pedestrians and perhaps a blinking yellow light to alert motorist. My third complaint is the cleanliness of the park. The parks department does a awful job at maintaining the park. The staff often stands around fiddling with their phones while letting their leaf blower idle at low power. The gas fumes from their leaf blower stink and they do it right next to the children. They do the worse job sweeping the leaves and branches and they barely ever pickup any trash unless it is reported to 311. The park inspector that comes to inspect the playground equipment has the laziest job of all. He or she just walks around the park for a few minutes and leaves. Makes zero note of the filth and unattended litter. My last and final complaint are most of the fathers in this park. They're dicks. Super unfriendly and rude. They behave like children with their dickish tough guy attitude. A majority of the mothers, caretakers, babysitters, and grandmothers who bring their children to this park are fine. Pretty much all the females are the nicer ones here. They're very much polite and respectful of other people's belongings and when encountering with other people's children. I can't say the same about the fathers here. They act like everything belongs to them, they never ask or start with a greeting. Verdict - if you live in this section of Forest Hills, this is probably you're nearest public park. The other would probably be Forest Park. This one isn't bad but just be prepared when you come across a father who wants a dick measuring contest. The park itself is great. Plenty of ground for kids to run around, the basketball courts and handball courts are often empty. It's mostly young children, it's not a teenager hangout spot or for punks who smoke pot in the playground among children. It's a safe park and I highly recommend it despite the noise, poor park maintenance from the parks department, and the a-hole fathers.

The gates of the handball courts are set up a bit odd, so you'll definitely be running out the court to get your ball. Unpopular opinion, but I'm not a fan of the pool. It's a bit small, therefore it gets soooo crowded during peak season. Great park to get your steps in as there are no shortage of slopes and walking paths here.
