We were in the neighborhood for an appointment at a dental lab and had about an hour to wait between procedures. Not having had lunch we figured let's check a few local eateries. When I checked Howley's on yelp I was surprised that there were so many negative reviews. Howley's is managed by the Sub-Culture Group, and we dine regularly at Kapow in East Boca and Dada in Delray Beach, also managed by Sub-Culture. And while this is an entirely different type of food, I still wanted to take a chance and check them out. And we did and were pleased and more than satisfied. First, the decor is truly funky. I'm not sure if everything is from the 50's when they first opened, but it sure looked like it was. The restaurant was spotless, and the toilet was as well. The AC was strong which was appreciated. Artwork on the walls was not our style but must have been from a local artist. Ceiling fixtures were similar to what my parent's had in the late 60's. Jessica was our server and she was professional and positive in her attitude. Could not have asked for anything more. Decided to order a turkey club on rye bread ($15) with fries which were included and share it. Some of the reviews addressed how large their portions were and photos confirmed it. Jessica brought out the sandwich which was split in the kitchen with an ample amount of fries on each plate. The fries were delicious. Obviously freshly made and not sitting around, they were crisp without being overcooked. The turkey was described as fresh roasted sliced turkey and it sure was. Bacon was plentiful and crispy along with fresh lettuce and tomato. Mayo served on the side as requested. The sandwich was so large that I was only able to eat a half of my half, taking the rest home for the following day. Ordered a corn muffin and chocolate chip muffin to take home and each was fresh and delicious. ($5-$6) Howley's certainly warrants a visit if you are in the area and not seeking a trendy looking place which exists all over West Palm where the food may not be as good but the vibe is what is being sold with mediocre food. There was an on-site manager who visited our table to make sure all was good. I neglected to ask her name and apologize - she was welcoming and clearly on top of her managerial duties. Howley's is a great local spot that has a wide variety of options. Today I ordered the New York strip steak with mashed potatoes and gravy, and the vegetable of the day was fresh green beans cooked with garlic and shallots. I also tried a cup of their chicken noodle soup, which I enjoyed. The steak was cooked perfectly and came with crispy onions on top. The mashed potatoes had a very nice texture, and you could tell that the gravy was homemade. The green beans were crisp and flavorful. read more

I've held off on writing this review and I really hate to say it because I want this place to be good every single time I go, but the service is actually so terrible and by the looks of the other reviews, I'm not the only one who thinks so. The food is baseline for a diner. It's nothing special, but it is mostly acceptable and the ambience truly does all of the heavy lifting for this restaurant. The last three times I went the service is just despicable really. You look around and most people have their food and there's maybe two or three tables that need to either order or still receive their food and you sit there and you don't even get a drink order taken for literally 15 minutes which was my experience the last time I went, we were sat by the hostess, who quickly returned to the host stand to just stand there, and we waited for our waitress to get our drink order and it took over 15 minutes for anyone to come, and the only reason they came is because we got up and asked if we were going to get seen by anyone. And being that the service was so incredibly slow and lackadaisical the last few times I timed how long it took for me to get my food and it took 47 minutes for them to deliver a turkey club and a Philly. And the time before the most recent time I was there for breakfast and it took them over an hour to bring the food out, and they did NOTHING about it. Which really was the most shocking part I am in the Restaurant industry myself and there are things that are objectively right and there are things that are objectively wrong and something wrong happened and they had nothing to say for it except sorry. The poor young guy behind the counter on the way out was throwing himself under the bus as if the whole Restuarant is on his shoulders meanwhile our waitress had nothing to say drop the check off and just moved on in spite of the fact that I took the time to communicate that I was very disappointed by the extremely long wait time and the club I had on this occasion had rotten tomatoes in it that I couldn't even remove from my sandwich because they were basically mush but it's kind of like the perfect situation for them because I'm so hungry at this point after waiting so long that I do my best to remove it and my waitress is nowhere to be seen so it's not like she's gonna hear about it until she drops the check off. So basically long story short if you're in the market for mediocre food, extremely slow service and a somewhat interesting ambience and you have about three hours on your hands Howleys is the spot for you! I'm all down for the hipster vibes and I know subculture tends to lean on that but I think that they really gotta understand that they're not too cool to care about giving good service and and checking that their produce is fresh. It's such a great location and if they can't run this restaurant the way it should be maybe they should consider selling it to somebody who cares more. Having mini golf out front doesn't make up for the fact that you need to take care of people. Also, don't look in the spout of the creamer tin... Yelp I guess likes pictures so pictured below is the root beer float that took 30 minutes to come after we finished eating. I come here all the time and I really wish they would just do better. I literally just come for the ambience, but imagine if this place actually ran well and you didn't have to suffer waiting or picking at your food! Think about it! Also if you're the manager I don't need your phone number or some kind of vip service next time I go! I just need regular good service! The veggies were cooked so perfectly as well, the brussel sprouts were amazing, and would probably get double instead of broccoli next time. I'm glad to be back my second time trying other menu items at Howley's. It was a busy afternoon lunch shift on Saturday. I have to give some kudos to our waitress who was juggling a full restaurant being double sat and in the weeds, her team came and helped her by taking our order and she came back to check on us. Service was fantastic 5/5. My husband and I both got the fish and chips. The cod batter was flavorless & fish was dry. But we enjoyed the sweet potato fries. His bowl of matzoh ball soup was by far the BEST we've ever had in palm beach county! And we've tried a few. I had a great experience here today. I'm at up with a colleague who lived locally and said despite the many choices we absolutely positively had to eat at Howley's Restaurant. My history of reviews shows a penchant and tendency for American fair and diners ; not only was I not disappointed, but my expectations were high and this place exceeded them. We were graded when we came in sat instantly and enjoyed delicious food at a fantastic price . I opted for steak and eggs with a side of fruit. Our waitress was awesome from start to finish and checked up on us regularly. It was busy inside the restaurant, but at no point even after finishing did we feel rushed to end our conversation and go, which is a pleasant surprise of a difference compared to other places that want to turn and burn and get you out of there. More of a 3.5 star review for Howley's. I really want to love this place but each time I've been here, some things were done well and others not so much. Last time it was the fish and chips, this time it was the matzo ball soup. It was so salty. Couldn't finish the broth. Was not this salty the previous time I ordered it. Always a treat to find a diner which gives "classic diner vibes". Vintage posters on the wall, 90's alternative rock playing ambiently, good service and a varied menu. Brittney was a very friendly and thorough server. Started with a flavorful artichoke dip which came with cake-like toast for dipping. The shrimp with grits was really yummy but interesting because the entire bottom surface of the bowl was covered in spinach so it changed the flavor profile of the meal. The banana cream pie was good, it's pretty hard to mess up. The only thing that was off putting was that the pie crust was wet and soggy. Other than that my meal was yummy and the banana slices were fresh. I love the vibe of the restaurant it definitely had a 1950's vintage feel to it and the building itself was really old so that added to the pizazzz which I loved. We dined here on Friday morning after getting off a cruise in Fort Lauderdale and heading home to Jacksonville. Let me start by saying we are frequent cruisers and make this drive often. We use GPS navigation but we always want to make sure we aren't going 20-30 minutes off the interstate to dine. Believe it or not many calls over the years with no answers, the hostess have to ask? However, Meghan answered my question with confidence and she was spot on! Once we arrived, we also had the pleasure of her being our sever. She is great! Friendly, accommodating, and really attentive. This place is so cool! A diner that has been in the same location for over 50 years! Be prepared as the portions are big! Howley's is a cool place to grab good food in a casual diner atmosphere. The service has been excellent every time I've gone. This visit I ordered a hamburger with onion rings. Both were cooked perfectly and I made an absolute pig of myself leaving a clean plate. My friend had a patty melt with onion rings. She didn't make a pig of herself but said it was really good. Howley's is open pretty late so it's a good spot for a meal before a part night or after if you're not out all night. They're also across the street from the new skate park so some of the younger crowd goes there too. They also have amazing desserts if you just have a sweet tooth. read more
