With out a doubt the best biscuits and gravy around!! Came here on a Saturday and to my surprise had the place to ourselves. I have never been here for breakfast and not seen a line out the door. The place was clean as always and the service just the same. Great news is that they are no longer a cash only establishment. The best restaurant in Occidental by far in my book. Loved the breakfast and the server couldn't have been better. The food was great - I had some eggs and toast - simple but perfectly prepped and served. My partner had the corn beef hash and it was delicious and fresh. Delicious coffee, cute dining area. Lots of history of the train that once came through and the original proprietor who jumped ship in the gold rush and staked claim here. The best part was our server. She gave us great tips about the roads to Bodega Bay and advice about the scene there. Above and beyond- she was so nice. Loved the area - and we'll definitely be back. read more

If you are looking for a cozy breakfast place this is it! I had the Wild Salmon Benedict with side of potatoes. My husband ordered Howard's Egg Sandwich and he added bacon and avocado. Together we enjoyed the Blueberry pancakes. We also had the vanilla lattes, however I wouldn't say the coffee tasted anything like vanilla. There is outdoor seating available as well. read more

We went here on my friend's recommendation who lives in the area. I had the eggs Benedict and a latte. Food and coffee was excellent and the outdoor seating with masks was also dog friendly. Only one downside which is easy to know about...when you order your food and coffee, the coffee pickup is at the window where you pay, and your food order gets delivered on the front porch. It's touch and go. SO good when it's good, and pretty bad when it's bad. I get the aloha oatmeal, and the last two times it's been super chunky and cold- it was so cold the butter would melt I think everything is pretty good when they're having a good day though! But it's like, it's so expensive to not want to finish it. We spend around $80 for breakfast every time so it's like... yikes man. read more

The Smash burgers are legit! I had the California and my husband had the American. They were both excellent! Fries were crispy and delicious. We ate on the deck, in the shade, had no wait on a Saturday for lunch. It was apparently quieter than usual our waiter told us. The staff was very nice as well. Cute little town! An amazing brunch spot in the cute town of occidental! We were on holiday in guerneville and drove by this spot for brunch and so worth it! We came around noon right when they stop their brunch menu however they were really nice to allow us order from the brunch menu. I got the salmon Benedict and husband got Huevos Rancheros and both were just delicious and so fresh. I also got their red Ferrari juice and it was really tasty and obviously very healthy! Everyone needs to have breakfast here on the patio! It's charming inside as well, but sitting in the sunlight on a cool morning in a beautiful little forest-y spot while you have a beautiful breakfast is just the best. First we started with mimosas (duh), the pomegranate for me and the grapefruit for Jon. They were delicious -- fresh squeezed juice here. The colors alone made me happy, never-mind the fragrance (omg). Next we thought we'd have a "wellness" shot to help jolt us into exploring/vacation mode. We each had a lemon/cayenne/ginger shot and they were fantastic. Super sour and spicy and bright. Yum. For breakfast I had to have the gluten free waffles. I'd read so many great things on Yelp and I rarely get a waffle, so I indulged. I even splurged for the real maple syrup (additional $2). It's worth it. Lots of butter, lots of syrup, fluffy waffle, sausage links to dip in the extra butter and syrup.... perfect breakfast. The sausage was bland but I was so happy with everything else I didn't mind at all. Jon went with the smoked salmon toast + side of homestyle potatoes and ate almost all of it. Substantial portions! Quaint. Great instructions for ordering (leave dogs outside, grab menu, order, take your number, seat yourself). I appreciate this as some places you're a bit unsure of the process. Lots of food choices. Easy to understand menu. Friendly service. Fun people watching. The food: EXTRAORDINARILY AVERAGE. I ordered the veggie sandwich and it was average. The only complaint is that the bread was toasted hard- it cut my mouth as I was eating it. My partner ordered a basic waffle and it was as described. If you find yourself at this restaurant, don't order eggs Benedict. The sauce is out of a can, gross. The breakfast potatoes are over cooked and barely warm. If you want hashbrowns, they are the frozen patty sort. The ingredients they use are processed, frozen or out of a can. So sad, this place used to rock. I'm not going to lie, I've got some conflicting feelings about Howard's. My roommates adore the place, and I *can* see its appeal. The staff are friendly, the portions are plentiful, and it's set in a beautiful airy Victorian mansion with a spacious front porch and original wood flooring. It might just be the most charming place for breakfast/brunch in all the west county. Their smoothies, while pricey, are delicious, as are their lattes, as I discovered yesterday. My half-caf was frothy and smooth, and they offer non-dairy milk options. The food, though... is problematic. Not all menu items are created equal, that's for sure. For breakfast, I ordered the veggie omelette which comes with country potatoes and choice of biscuit or toast. The potatoes were definitely the high point. They weren't crispy (how I like them), but that's a personal preference anyway. The flavor was good and herby. The omelette was large and well-stuffed. Based on appearance alone, I was definitely excited to eat it, so I was bummed to discover that the vegetables inside--mushrooms, spinach, tomatoes, etc.--were completely unseasoned, and the eggs themselves were tough, thin, and rubbery (How? Why? How long had they been sitting out?). Maybe it was an off day; my roomies both rave about their omelettes. The biscuit was cold, and very dense and dry, as though they don't add enough fat or leavening. I did appreciate that they serve it with both butter and jam, which improved it. My dad got some kind of burger with thick, crispy fries and bacon, and looking at it, I wished I'd ordered its vegetarian counterpart. It all looked excellent and he really enjoyed it. Planned a stop to spend some time in Occidental on the way to a vacation rental in Dillon Beach. Didn't realize many restaurants and shops aren't open on Wednesdays - oops! All was well when we found this little gem! Grabbed a menu, ordered and found a table outside on the deck. Lovely cool weather for us as we'd come from Sacramento on a June day. Went to the Howard Station Cafe for brunch. Nice little place with outside seating on the porch. I was disappointed by the few choices of omelettes -- not one choice that wasn't fish, spicy, or all veges. I ordered the cajun omelette so I didn't have to pay extra to customize one. A group of 5 of us were on a motorcycle ride from Tiburon heading north and ended up having lunch in Occidental at Howard Station. There was a bit of a wait, but it goes fairly fast. It's packed for a reason! :) The tables are tight and you have to squeeze into the chairs depending on where you sit. I ordered the grilled chicken wrap with coleslaw on the side. It was very good. Just be aware it's cash only. They do have an ATM machine. Will definitely be back to try some other things. read more

Really enjoyed having lunch at this place with my husband and two dogs. It had such a cute little small town feel. Extra fun given the fall atmosphere in the air today. We were happy we could sit out on the porch with the dogs. The waitress was very attentive to the dogs which we always like. A gentleman came out with a big water bowl for them without us asking. The food came incredibly fast. I had the American smash burger with avocado and loved it! The fries were really tasty. I used to love coming here/ordering breakfast to go. Their primo potatoes were amazing. Today I placed an order for pick up. I was told they were slow and my order would be ready in 5min. I was 20 minutes away and the young lady made it seem like an inconvenience to hold off on my order a couple minutes, asking me if I could call back later or order when I arrived. I get no cellphone reception in Occidental, barely anyone does. I told them this. I'm obviously calling ahead so that my order is ready when I arrive and don't have to wait, as I have a new born baby to go home to and I'm just getting off work. So I'm told that she would hold off on my order- great. I get home and my food is not hot. I live 7 minutes away. Not only is my food not hot, my husband found a BONE in his Salmon Eggs Benedict. This could literally kill someone. I also noticed their primo potato portion was WAY smaller than it used to be. Their prices are pretty expensive for the portion I received today. Overall, I am very unsatisfied with their customer service. I understand things are hard on everyone, but that's exactly why customers shouldn't be paying so much $$$ for 2 potatoes AND almost swallowing a bone. read more

The food was delicious, plenty of options for vegetarians and those who are gluten-free, huge portions, and the cutest environment. We sat outside and had a great time. Can't wait to go back! Everyone is so friendly and helpful, their vegan French toast is incredible and they legit have the best smoothies I've ever had. I'm weird about my smoothie texture and theirs are perfectly smooth and blended. It's cute and cozy and everything you want from cafe in the middle of a bunch of woodsy towns. read more

What happened to this place? 60.00 for 2 breakfasts and one scrabled egg. 2 coffees * folgers at best* 1 O.J. Let's talk first about my plate. Eggs Benedict. I ate 2 bites. Only reason I took the second bite was to make sure it was as bad as the first. Their " sauce" tasted rancid. Actually very scary and all day feared my 2 bites I would totally regret. Potatoes that were served w/ it were Luke warm at best. Husband had the reg breakfast. Pancakes fried eggs and bacon. Bacon cold and looked barely cooked. Pancakes 2 big ones with a tiny little serving of syrup. My granddaughter at the scrambled eggs. I choked down half a cup of " coffee" reminiscent of folgers instant my grandmother used to buy. NO WONDER you pay before this horrible food arrives! No wonder nobody came to ask if everything was o.k. or did we need anything else- no wonder not one staff member asked if we needed any refills of coffee. ( for fear they would hear how bad it was) Stay away from here at breakfast. For us we won't ever return. A waste of SIXTY bucks! I ended up getting a 5.00 scone at Wild Flour Bakery on our way out of town and wished we had passed passed up Howard's. read more

Had a lovely lunch here. I had a fresh crisp garden salad with peanut dressing. Perfect. My husband had a tuna salad sandwich which he enjoyed. Sunday July 14, 2024. This is the date when this happened. Such disappointment as we come here often with our friends and family. As our dining experiences have always been PHENOMENAL in past this I can't fathom how much disappointment and disrespect we received from Howard's Stations so called "Manager". So we go to Howard Station Cafe because they promote a "Dog friendly cafe " I even asked one of the food runners before entering if it's okay to bring in our pet ( teacup chihuahua) . So we ordered and payed and got our food. Here comes the manager approaching us in an unprofessional way saying that we can't eat inside with our pet because it's a "health code violation " and was being so rude about it not even being polite about the situation. Then she asked "Who told you this??" I replied and pointed out to the specific food runner. Couple of seconds later she comes backs saying this "Oh she didn't know because she doesn't speak English" when I clearly spoke to her in ENGLISH. Not even realizing she just stereotyped her own employee how sad. After that she got very impatient grabbed our food and said "Im taking your food outside!" as if she's dictating us to get out. We asked for a refund because nobody would EVER feel comfortable after that awkward situation.. But then she became very upset and hesitant on issuing a refund kept giving so on why she couldn't. We kept asking her at least 2 times to give us a refund in a polite manner then after a moment of back and forth arguing she said *annoyed sigh* "OKAY! I'll give you back!" They are 1 step away from not having any need for waiters. Great classic Occidental place that I've enjoyed for (over 20?!) years. I admit that I miss the table service but most times they're friendly and helpful, despite. During Covid, there were challenging moments, especially when I waited in a long line to order then the kid working there stated they decided to stop serving breakfast early because of staffing (they could've let everyone in line know that or put up a sign?). Most people drive to eat here so disappointments like that are extra disappointing. If they served breakfast later on weekends (ie benedicts and such), I'd go more often. read more

They have a dog friendly porch with warm, attentive service. We shared the breakfast burrito with home fries and hash with two eggs and biscuit. The food was well prepared and nice, but not OHMYGODTHISISAMAZING. To our taste the hash was a bit sweet and biscuit was OK. The potatoes were really good though. Seating is tight, but the food options & quality make up for it. Their breakfast & brunch options are terrific. Lots of flavor & plenty of creative options. I had a bowl of beans, kale, and poached eggs, which was surprisingly yummy. A little heavy on the garlic, but for me it was perfect. My honey and I and my fur baby stayed at Occidental Lodge for the weekend and ate breakfast at Howard's Cafe it was so good and clean and the staff was very nice they even allowed my service dog that I had in her little buggy accompany us for breakfast I definitely recommend this great Cafe to anyone that stays in the area near Occidental California oh and they're farmers market is every Friday from May - October lots of crafts and veggies and fruits and of course Mushrooms read more

Great food and drinks tasted like if everything was made from scratch my wife had egg Benedict and I had the chilaquiles with chorizo my kids had the waffles and chocolate chip pancakes and they loved them as well. My husband and I spent a weekend in neighboring Cazadero recently, and ended up at Howard Station Cafe for lunch one day. We enjoyed it so much we went back the next day for brunch! It's a cute, centrally located spot in a historic train station -- love the info on the walls about the Pacific coast railroad that sparked the nearby towns and relates to the cafe's name. It's a cozy spot with plenty of space and super friendly staff. During lunch on a Sunday afternoon, it was bustling, but we were still able to find a table on the front porch with our dog. The next day -- a Monday -- we were one of three parties there for a late breakfast, and sat inside. Here's what we had over both meals: -Howard's Club with waffle fries (great!!) -Some kind of bacon vegetable soup (AMAZING! Hit the spot on a cool day). -Chai latte (wonderful!) -Cold Brew (just fine -- kind of tasted like hot coffee refrigerated) -Huevos Rancheros (super good -- very filling and tangy) -Smoked Salmon Omelette (also great, but the biscuit it came with was NEXT LEVEL good) Thanks Howard Station, hope we can visit again someday! read more

Loved Howard Station. I had the Cajun omelette and it was SOOOO good. Maybe one of my favorite omelettes I've ordered anywhere. It had this spicy sausage, cheese, I forget what else honestly, and jalapeños, and was extremely flavorful without being overpowering. I like my food spicy but not so hot that all I taste is spicy, and they did a good job of that where I could still taste other flavors besides "hot." Had one of their green juices as well. The service was very friendly with a waitress that seemed to really know the menu and was attentive when we needed her. Highly recommend as a breakfast joint - I believe they serve dinner too so I'd have to go back to check it out if I'm ever in the area again! read more
