I'm a huge fan of Houa Khong 2! The owner and staff are very attentive and nice. They're always smiling and it gives the restaurant a great and friendly feeling to it. Overall the restaurant is quite small so I'd recommend not coming here with a large party. The food is delicious! They pack a lot of flavor into everything I've ordered. The prices are fair and the quality is great. The food they make can be extremely spicy (which I love) but be warned it can be intense. Best Pad Thai in Merced. I always go here for their Pad Thai. Their combination Pad Thai is seafood + your choice of meat! In terms of portions, it is DEFINITELY enough for a person. There are days when I can finish it on my own, but there are other days when I need to bring a to-go box. I typically pair my Pad Thai with the Som Tam (a.k.a. Papaya salad- Thai style). I suggest this pair especially if you choose to get a level 7 spice for your Pad Thai. A no-spice papaya salad really cools you down with an awesome texture change. Also they have fast service! (The only day that I experienced slow service was when they had a packed house and 2 other parties were waiting for their to-go orders.) 9/10 times, super fast service. read more

Ordered: chicken larb (mild), Thai style papaya salad (mild), Seafood green curry. Chicken Larb: pretty decent, even though the mild was more like non-spicy. It has all the flavors it was supposed to have. Thai style papaya salad: With one look, I could already tell that it was not really Thai style. It was very orange, which seemed more like Lao style (correct me if I'm wrong). I was a bit sad that there was no green beans. The flavor wasn't bad though. Seafood green curry: This is where things went wrong, and thus the 3-star rating. The curry was a bit on the watery side, but that's okay. What I didn't like was that the color of the curry was literally absorbed into everything. It turned the rice green, as if it was food-coloring green. The shrimps were totally green. ALL the seafood was green. EVERYTHING was SO GREEN, and not the typical green curry color, but, as I have said, food-coloring green color. You also cannot taste any curry spice. The only thing that I liked from that curry was the eggplant. It seemed like they fried the eggplants a little bit before they put them in the curry, which is good since it prevented the eggplants from being too soggy. I love this place... However, I still prefer their original location on 13th street. Be careful when ordering spicy food; I love spicy food and usually get level 10 at other Thai restaurants... I got a level 10 at this place and it was too hot... I ate it, but I had to go eat ice cream right after. That way when I jumped on the toilet later I could have a cooling down process... It took a while to find this place as it's nestled back around the corner from Raley's. But we were very glad we did. The food was really flavorful, which is a nice break from a lot of the nearby Thai places. I ordered pad kee mao, which is my favorite. I haven't found a good one here in Merced yet, but this one may make me change my mind. It was very well spiced. I got an 8, which wasn't overwhelmingly spicy in the mouth, but left that really good, well spiced burn in the throat and stomach. The sticky rice was perfect too with the curry we ordered. I love coming to HK 2 for their yummy soups! They are typically priced very reasonably for the size! I also like their chicken wings bc the sauce is pretty bomb! I stop by to have lunch today. Arrived about 11:20 AM. I wanted to order some egg rolls but the waitress said the chef is just barely starting to heat up the oil so it would take about 20 mins to heat up. I was like seriously???? the restaurant is open for business at 11:00 AM but they are telling me that the chef haven't started heating the oil yet to fry the egg rolls. I was at a lost for words....and my main dish which is Kaphon had no heat in the curry at all. They used the fat noodles for the kaphon. I favor the thinner noodles for kaphon. I also order an appetizer spring roll which came after the main course. The down side to my spring rolls was that there was more cabbage in it than noodles. I would of like less cabbage and maybe some cucumbers in it. Lastly, I order Thai tea to go but asked for boba which they said they didn't have. I probably wouldn't return. read more

So so so good. The food here is delicious--everything I've ordered so far is amazing. My favorite is the graprow fried rice (I'm probably spelling it wrong, it's the fried rice dish that's heavy in basil, garlic and chilies). Ginger tofu is outstanding, the pad thai is quite good. My husband loves the papaya salad, which they make both Laos style and Thai style. I love that the larb is topped with crispy garlic. The pad asparagus is outstanding. The waitresses are very friendly, and so is the cook, who often comes out when he has a break to ask how you're liking the food. I always feel welcome when I walk in, and I leave happy, and with delicious leftovers that I'll enjoy for breakfast the next day. I would give them 10 stars if yelp would let me. :) read more

The food may be great but you don't know what they do in the back of the kitchen. the cook is extremely dirty and never washes his hand. I stopped going there when I sat at one of the tables that you can see right in the kitchen and I seen him stuck his hand down his pants when he made food for one of the workers boyfriend. I was there when the boyfriend found the hair in his food and the cook never apologized for it. I was really grossed out by the incident and walked out without paying. It made me question if he had the balls to do such thing without remorse imagine what other things he does in the back of the kitchen that no other customers see? read more
