Tranquil and serene! Had our work staff retreat here and the views are breathtaking. Offered a refreshing welcome cocktail as they accompany you to your room. Each room is a quiet mini escape with vinyl record players and a few solid artists to choose from, I didn't know they didn't have TVs in the room and I didn't miss it. It was walkable, the staff were amazing, coffee delivered to your door every morning, and breakfast was included (French toast was yummy). Even enjoyed the bar one evening and I would definitely stay here again and highly recommend!

If you are looking for a super chill,, understated stylish beach getaway without the flight, or just a great spot in Laguna if you are from out of town, then look no further. Updated retro vibes here - no TV in the room but you do get a record player and their collection of LPs. Highlights: - Location: short walk to an amazing beach cove. Nice walk to downtown Laguna Beach. Amazing view of the water down the hill from the open air common room, day or night. - Room is the epitome of relaxed, retro comfort. Very comfortable to hang out here. - Very nice relaxed saltwater pool that felt like a mineral bath, but totally swimmable. - Nice welcome cocktail when you check in (comped) - Great breakfast food, shakshuka and granola were both great. (Costs extra). Coffee delivered to your door in the morning is included, and quite good. - Bartender knows how to mix a drink, that's all I need to say about that. - Staff has the unobtrusive, light touch but always there to help thing down pat. It's not cheap. It is worth it. It's the kind of place wealthy and famous people might stay just to lay low in comfort. My wife and I really liked it here.

The perfect staycation! 100% will be back. Enjoyed every minute and moment of my stay. The room size is perfect and the bed was so comfortable. The sunset was beautiful from the pool area and the breakfast was delicious!

Immaculate vibes! Probably my 5th stay here, keeps me coming back. Great location to take the beach or town on foot. Soft sheets, comfy beds, friendly service, beautiful details. What's not to love? 12/10

Staff was very friendly, felt like we were guests in a friends house. Very cool vibe, very relaxing. Dillon and Sarah were great.

We recently took a weekend trip to Santa Barbara and ended up staying one night here on the way back to San Diego. The exterior of the hotel is quaint in a sense that it matches in with the surrounding buildings, so it is easy to miss if you're not paying attention. Parking can be difficult to find. When we arrived I ended up having to park in one of the side alleys when I was checking in. Parking is on the street in front of the hotel, the alleyways (one side has 3 bays) and in the back with a small parking lot. I lucked out and ended up taking one of the bays after checking in (photo included). We checked in, the lady at the front desk was nice. She showed us around the hotel, escorted us to our room (Shaws) and gave us two mixed drinks as a welcome. The room was beautiful. I made sure we got a room with an ocean view. Pictures included. The bar is convenient, but a bit expensive. Most mixed drinks are $20, happy hour they're slightly discounted. We ended up just walking to Pavillions a couple blocks east and buying alcohol there. The area is gorgeous, it's Laguna Beach after-all. Being from San Diego, we have been here many times, but it was still fun exploring the nearby community. Urth cafe is a couple blocks east, which is one of our favorite LA/OC area cafes. The bed was ok, a little firm, but the pillows were too soft -- i prefer firmer pillows for support. At night we heard lots of weird sounds coming from the walls, we assumedit was from the plumbing. Not a big deal, we still slept fine. The next morning we went downstairs at 8am and ate breakfast. Breakfast is included and really worth it to try. I ordered Sausage and Eggs, while my partner got French Toast. Beautiful presentation and the they both tasted really good. Bravo. Photos included. Overall, it was a great experience. We had fun, enjoyed watching the sunset and sunrise from our room. Lots of cool shops and of course downtown Laguna Beach is all within walking distance. To really enjoy this experience, I would recommend getting a room with a ocean view. I included a photo of the room layout (for your orientation, the pool is the direction of the ocean). We will be back! thank you for the memories!

We returned for fourth of July weekend, and had the best time once again. We stayed in a different room with a patio, which we loved. It was the perfect spot to have evening cocktails and morning coffee. We arrived Wednesday before the beaches closed for the holiday weekend, and got to visit Shaw's Cove and Diver's Cove (both nearby) before they were roped off. Even with the beaches closed, there was so much to do. We spent a lot of time at the pool (in the socially distanced daybeds), had a picnic at Heisler Park, took beautiful photos of the beaches from above, and dined at the nearby restaurant patios (Las Brisas and Royal Hawaiian were both wonderful). They even had a special BBQ for their guests on the 4th which was a special touch. The bar was open and both Chody and Frank made incredible cocktails! The Oaxacan on Trinadad is not to be missed. Reed worked by the pool and couldn't have been nicer. And the GM, Reinhard was incredibly kind and accommodating once again. I can't say enough good things about this hotel. With all of our out of state trips, weddings, etc. being cancelled for the year, this is the perfect getaway. We've already booked again for Labor Day weekend. Hotel Joaquin truly is a home away from home.

Here's the "ocean view." Can you see it?
    Andrew J.

Let's start with the positive: good concept (small and chic boutique), good location, well-designed with a modern yet cozy feel, and staff are friendly. This is not a luxury experience but I think most guests (myself included) understand that going in. Parking could be an issue in the summer but I don't even mind that. The reason this hotel gets only two stars is that my guest room (COTE, #27) has a giant (27" x 15") post running right through the middle of it, blocking the ocean view that I paid more for. Seriously, look at the photos. I can't believe they even rent this room out, much less at a premium rate based on a supposed ocean view. The photo of the room on the hotel website does NOT show this post. Although if you look closely at the room's floor plan (also in the website), you'll see the post, you'd never know to look for it. I found this to be fairly deceptive. Stay away from this room, and make sure you tell them you want to avoid it when you book. Revised to 1 star this morning after discovering that there was no hot water. Ran both the shower and faucet independently for several minutes each. Never heated up. Texted the hotel and the response was that they were unaware of any issues but would look into it. So, no shower and no shave this morning. So disappointed with this place.

At the Northern end of Laguna Beach you will find a small boutique pocket hotel with a small restaurant serviced by a tiny kitchen no bigger than 4 seats in a Bentley. While the restaurant is reasonable considering the positively wonderful food it is reserved only for Hotel guests and is not open to the public. No, the hoi polloi won't be carousing at the mini-bar. It's a Let Them Eat Cake spot where you can have your cake and eat it too. Secret: If you know someone staying here? They can invite two guests for dinner. Stand in the lobby and try to convince or bribe some guests to snag two seats for you. It's like being 16 and asking strangers to buy you beer. Bill Addison of the LA Times wanted to have Chef Bongarra's baby, but after dining here, he'll have to get in line. Intrigued by the glowing accolades that this is the very best in OC, I was determined to go. I pulled up my expando pants and hit the Bar for a welcome drink or three and joined the Lady's Divorce Party next to me in an attempt to retrieve the entire male gender from disgrace. My Auric Spritz with Dolan Vermouth, Magdalena Run, Aperol, Lemon, and Sparkling White Wine got the party rockin' which led to a Path To Pamplemousse with more Vermouth, Grapefruit Liqueur, Brazilian Run, Cinnamon, Lemon and Soda. After another one of those I realized the Divorce Party Ladies were right about men. That left me chatting with Master Zach, Master Tender and A Master with Clement Le Canne Bleu Rum, Passion Fruit Puree, Cocchi Americano (Wine), Lemon and Soda. By this time I was a master of none. My memory needed refreshing after too many refreshing cocktails. Like which room am I in? The restaurant has 11 tables that are sprinkled around a patio and all outside with a view of the pool, rooftops and a sliver of the Ocean. The menu revolves around the seasons and Chef Leo's whim. He is as charming as a professional Lobbyist and no doubt will stop by your table and if he likes your style he'll spiff you with snacks he made mostly for himself. Soon, Chef Leo will have read you and will create a menu just for you produced in the camper shell kitchen in the Hotel basement. Green Tomatoes from the rooftop garden over Burrata, Baby Basil, and house baked Baguettes appeared and then disappeared. Today, tomatoes taste like hat bands but not these. (Do not ask how I know what a hat band tastes like.) These were spectacular. The Broccolini with Serrano Ham, Aji Amarillo, Garlic Tahini, and Hemp Seeds, had a pleasant whisper of heat after the Broccolini crunch got munched. The Crab Gnocchi would be at home at Le Mani in Pasta in Rome. These little downy pillows came with Aged Cheddar, Gouda, Broccolini Flowers, and Crushed Macadamia Nuts. Playful, no? It was a master class of taste and texture. How about some Charred Artichoke Hearts worked into Garlic Aioli, Dill and Caper Oil with Artichoke Puree? I swiped left on the Caesar and that was the right choice although I could have had both if I was greedy, which defines me. If Chef is serving the Chinese Flaky Fry Bread, which is not on the menu dive on it like a hungry pound puppy. (Chef hordes it unless he likes you). Party manners are required and will be rewarded. Leave room for the Octopus Carpaccio with Harissa Aioli, Wild Greens, Marinated Artichokes, and Black Garlic. It was so good I asked to have the juices funneled into a shot glass and tossed that back. The Tuna with an Avocado fan Panca Chili, Chives, all on a house Baguette took a tuna sandwich from after school ho hum to ecstasy. Chef Leo, (a Porteno) and I teared up over the good life in Buenas Aires and similar memories of exquisite Parrillada there until Chef sent up a Skirt Steak, with Shredded Cabbage and Chimichurri Sauce, Pepper Jus, and Smoked Salt. My eyes rolled back into my head with joy and then the 45 day Aged Rib-Eye appeared and threatened to finish me off. There is nothing like this, this side of Dora's or Campo Estilo in B.A. Undaunted, yet humbled, I pressed on. The Seabass with Forbidden Black Rice in Coconut Broth needed a home. I had absolutely no more room which, of course, didn't stop me. This dish was a religious experience and if Jesus had truly created this fish dish he would have hogged it all for himself. Finally, The Panna Cotta was a delicate cap to this divine and magical culinary adventure. Book a room here even if you just live down the street so you can dine here. (Or simply pay for a room and call it the ante-up to play in the big sandbox with the cool kids). Saline does in fact reign supreme.

We stayed at this beautiful boutique hotel the weekend of our Wedding and they were beyond catering from the moment we walked in the front door. We were greeted with a delicious drink and was provided with a personal tour of the entire hotel. A service that has definitely been lost with large box hotels. Delicious Coffee in the mornings and complimentary breakfast our entire stay. Chilled by the pool and had complimentary appetizers. Lamb Meatballs and Shrimp Kabob was delicious and would definitely recommend. The other guests the entire stay all felt like family co mingling with one another. Great ambiance throughout the hotel with record players in every room and albums throughout the hotel that you could bring back to your room to set the mood. We enjoyed our visit and would be a return guest. The only area of opportunity I can offer this boutique hotel would be the restaurant Saline. We heard raving reviews online stating that they wish this restaurant was open to the general public and not just the hotel guests so it was only right to put our names down on the guestlist and join in on the experience. The menu is small and not many items that is cooked over a hot stove. By the pool we had their rendition of a Salmon Tartare which was a salad with Salmon thrown on top and tasted as if it was dressed with mayonnaise. For Dinner we had the Brussel Sprouts and Mussels. The Brussel sprouts were overcooked and the Mussels had an unusual taste to them which both me and my wife got sick from later that night, not the experience that we wanted to have our last night staying at the Barto. I have noticed that the menu is constantly revolving and trying new things to offer there guests so that is appreciated. The hotel was notified and we no longer see that menu item listed. After our 3 night visit me and my wife would be happy to come back again, until then Hotel Joaquin! Don't forget the beautiful views and just walking distance to the beach.

If you ask nicely they will, but make sure you call and make a reservation. Tell them Johnny Firecracker sent you.

    Are kid's welcomed?

I'm not sure about children, but I know that the hotel frowns on extraneous apostrophes.

The service was excellent and can see that staff takes great care and attention to making sure everything is taken care of. We very much appreciated all the amenities this inn had to offer such as the welcome drink, evening cookies (delicious!), sauna, sunblock at the pool, towels, lovely breakfast.. all complimentary (breakfast with resort fee). We also appreciated the 10% military discount. We stayed in room 23 which was a standard queen bed with garden view and liked that spot because it felt central, private, and quiet. The room is on the smaller side but it was fine. It does not have a fridge but they provide an ice bucket. We ended up putting our bottled waters on top of the AC box and that kept it cool. Being that the inn is beautifully historic, there weren't many outlets inside the room. The bath robes were very plush. Both lamp shade knobs didn't seem to turn properly but we made it work somehow. Otherwise, we felt well taken care of throughout our stay and so glad we came. Aside from the inn, there is a walk to get to Victoria Beach. We walked south along Coast Highway to Victoria Place and found the underpass from there. We also took the free trolley outside of the hotel to get around town. It could be quite a wait for the trolley as we waited 30 mins. There is a QR code on the sign to track the trolley locations.
