This hotel was so so great to stay in for a few days this past week. Very clean, updated and amazing view of the pier! plenty of towels and use of the outside area. It is very open though so people aren't very mindful of the always open curtains around them hah. Maybe install window tint for you cannot see into the windows. We will definitely stay again, it is getting 4 stars because they could us better blackout curtains, the room we had was right on the balcony with the bright lights on all night so it was so so bright. Other than that great stay at the San Clemente Pier. ** not sure why there are so many harsh reviews- if you're looking for Hyatt or Ritz standards- then book at those places. This place was probably cute and quaint 20 years ago but for the price in 2025, it definitely NEEDS a major facelift. Starting with the beds. Water beds may have been popular in the 70's but our bed absolutely felt like we were on a waterbed with super soft pillows to match-It would be nice to offer a little variety of pillows (soft, firm or somewhere in between) are great options. The tile in the bathroom was cracked (if you are not careful, you will your foot/toes). The housekeeping person did not bother to fill up the shower gel or refill the shampoo and conditioner. The mini fridge was leaking all over the floor. We used our towels to dry the floor and discovered the floors were not cleaned or mopped because the towels were instantly black where we cleaned the fridge leak. There was NO hot water all weekend!!!!!!!!!!!!! completely unacceptable The owners NEED to invest money to bring this place up and current and not just take peoples hard earned money for a "room with a view". The only thing we enjoyed for my husband's surprise birthday get away was the secured parking garage and the walk across the street to the beach. This is a very clean, very cute hotel just across from the pier. The staff is extremely friendly and very helpful. They actually called to verify we were on our way. Our room is super cute, but small. It's basically a bed and a bathroom. But it was very clean and featured hardwood floors and a smart TV. Large shower. Free Wi-Fi, though it could be a bit faster. The view is beautiful. But you will be sharing a common large deck right outside your window. Those on a romantic getaway, watch your curtains! While the room is very nice, we would have appreciated some USB ports and a nice, comfy chair in the corner. You can hear the waves at night, but keep in mind that you will also hear some street noise and most definitely some trains passing by. I would highly recommend getting the parking pass. At $15, it's a steal. We will be back for sure! read more

Not a good place to stay anymore. Rude staff. Troubled property. There's no hot water on Saturdays between 5pm and 10pm according to staff. We wish we would have known. They "are aware," but couldn't warn guests that the need to reset the water heaters on the roof but couldn't do that until 9pm. Couldn't shower before dinner or after dinner, after a day at the beach. Were told we'd be taken care of, after us and other guests complained. Found out at check out they'd give us a voucher for a free breakfast not money off the night's stay. Told staff that we've stayed here over 6 or 7 times and this was our 10 year anniversary and had to cancel our nice dinner plans because we couldn't get cleaned up. Told staff we would consider not staying here next time. They said "that's fine." Also the WiFI is awful. Wanted to watch their TV but the connection was so slow that nothing would stream; just buffered forever. Not a good business. Not a good property to stay at. Stay away. read more

Friends gifted us an overnight stay at Casa Tropicana while visiting in June. The room was small but beautiful, right on the balcony. Absolutely spotless, to boot. Minor noise from other guests, but in an older building it's to be expected. Conveniently located right across the street from the pier, with easy walking access to many cafes and restaurants. Zero complaints and would absolutely visit again. read more

Complimentary parking & in-room coffee. Close to many restaurants & shops. Attentive staff including Adrianna at the front desk & both Edith & Liz...she's been there 30+ years! Just like a home away from home. Although no fault of the hotel, the obnoxious noise from the freight trains & Amtrack at all hours of the night & day, including beeping, security gates & horns blasting, I would not recommend staying downtown in San Clemente until the curfew gets back in place, which was terminated in December 2020 according to the chamber of commerce. Run as far as possible. I booked the 4th floor villa called Casa Patron for my wedding weekend and when we arrived was the refrigerator did not work, there was no air conditioning (105 heatwave weekend) and no Wifi. Things got even worse when we realized there were cockroaches and every cabinet and crevice of the hotel. They were so gross swarming out of each open cabinet door in packs of 10 or more, it was disgusting. We called the receptionist and they sent someone up who then swatted a couple and left. The issue was no where near solved and the rude receptionist told us we could simply "go ahead and check out then." Startled by her response we told her that we had no place to go the receptionist said that she called the hotel next-door seahorse resort and they confirmed they had room for us. Luckily, before we checked out, we went ahead and walked over to the seahorse resort to confirm what the receptionist was saying about availability. When we arrived no one had called them and they did not have a room for us. This means that the receptionist straight out lied and wanted us to check out, be stranded so she didn't have to deal with us. While we were at the Seahorse resort next door another man (outside of our party) was complaining about Casa Tropicana saying that they took his reservation, money, but didn't have a room for him when he arrived or give him a refund. We quickly jumped in and said that we were having issues with casa Tropicana as well. Luckily my brother-in-law was able to find an Airbnb allowing us to check in the same day at a late time. We notified the receptionist that Seahorse resort did not have room for us like she said they did and we demanded a refund. She printed out a refund receipt but didnt want to let my cousin cancel who was staying one room downstairs from us saying the cockroaches weren't in her room. After she witnessed all of the disgusting bugs, she did not feel comfortable staying anywhere in the hotel. Being that she was from another country and having trouble with English the receptionist declined her wanted to cancel and was about to be off work in 5minutes because she was off at 5pm! My maid of honor rushed down to translate demanding a refund for her as well since it would be likely that those cockroaches were crawling all over the hotel not just the fourth floor. Both my cousin and I received printed receipts for our refunds but 10 business days after my honeymoon I had still not received my refund. I called Casa Tropicana to check in on this and she simply said " uhhh ya no one ever processed this refund ". She resubmitted my refund so we'll see if in 2 weeks if it actually goes through. Such a nightmare- I better get my money back or I will have to report them. I warn you stay far far away from this gross rude place!! read more

The pictures of our room online looked beautiful, and although the bed was the same as the picture, the rest of it was a little outdated. The bathroom walls had tons of chips in the paint, and the blinds that separate the bathtub from the bedroom were rusted and definitely outdated. I now understand why they don't show a picture of the bathroom online. The Jets in the Jacuzzi tub do not work, and the front desk closes at five so if you need anything you'll have to call an after hours phone number which is only for emergencies. The room I'm referring to is the "Clemente room". It is incredibly close to the ocean with a beautiful view on a shared common balcony. That is definitely a nice part. read more

The so called wet bar was tile and sink and the very small refrigerator was dirty and not cold. We were very Disappointed! I would Not recommend this place to anyone! read more

Clunky. This place is amusingly, oddly, sad. Check in: called ahead to ask about available parking: told to come around back, come in the door and we would get a clicker and instructions. Back door gate locked. Called, hung up on. Called, hung up on again. Went to the front desk, finally given a map and the clicker and keys. Multilevel structure with simple key/lock to a giant glass sliding door which opens up into a basic (roughly) 18 x 18 room which includes a very basic flatscreen TV, table, bed on a wooden slab I'm pretty sure it was made by 10th graders in shop class. Most light switches don't actually operate anything. Outlets for anything like chargers, sleep machines are nearly nonexistent in the room. What does exist is about 10+ feet away from the bed area. Bathroom: dated and "rustic." Double wide bathroom tub with Jets (didn't bother trying them). Flooring of the tub with large giant bubbles as if the whole thing was peeling off of the floor. Shower with OK pressure and good hot water temperature. Grouted tile that looks like it hasn't been cleaned well in months if not years. TV with mainstream streaming services. The real take away gem of this place (as we opted for) was the ocean side view. The patio area just outside of the room is very nice... Multiple comfortable chairs, couches, coffee tables... If I had to do this all over again I would've packed a cooler full of snacks and booze and retired back to the room early to sit on the patio and have homemade cocktails and watching the sunset, into the night and then had a simple shower and sleep. The stay was 300.00/night (way off season). Definitely not worth more than 1/2 that on any day. The immediate area is saturated with crappy tourist trap food/drink places EXCEPT Bear Coast for coffee. Otherwise, walk all of 12 min into town for better food and drink. read more

It was lovely to be able to walk easily to the beach, but you'd think for the amount charged for the rooms that the quality would be better. I've stayed in much cheaper hotels/motels that offered free coffee/tea - this place only had $3 water bottles available for purchase in the rooms. I have been here numerous times but I have never actually staid here. However, I watched this place over the past 6 years as it began the long slow process of rehabbing and refurbishing this grand old beach front building. It was even for sale once when I had money and I thought about buying it. There are not only great rooms for guests, but there is an owner's apartment with a pool - a true retirement paradise - or for a young family just starting out who wants a family business that includes paradise and a pool. What I have done is hang out in the nice bar, and eaten in the excellent restaurant. One day I will stay here for a night or two... with the right woman... the right bathing suit... and a pile of cash. read more

My husband and I wanted a romantic night away from the kids. Love the location... so disappointed in the room. We booked the top floor, Casa del Rey, and as we walked up the 5 flights of stairs noticed chipping paint and rotting wood everywhere. Our private balcony had more chipped paint on everything and the furniture was terribly uncomfortable and sparse. Once the door was opened... very stale and stuffy... NO CARPET! Just a cement floor with chipped paint and a large shower with mildew. The step up to the bathroom was masked with torn blue tape, so we didn't trip. I really think this little hotel has possibilities and it doesn't seem like it would take too much to freshen it up... but seems like owners have given up. First, I want to apologize for the somewhat darker photos. I stayed here just last night as a treat to myself to get away from my room for rent living situation. Let's just say this place is good for if you really need a place to crash while your in the San Clemente area. As far as beach view luxury, this place falls highly short! The paint in the rooms is uneven and there are obvious spots where someone tried to cover holes in the wall. There were even spots above the window where there may have been a curtain rod. The "fireplace" may seem like a nice touch but the face framing of the fireplace is completely missing and the fire doesn't even get burning bright enough to glow the room. There were TV instructions but I seemed to only be able to get the music stations. They do provide a DVD player, so if you stay here, come prepared. The bed was fairly comfortable and the linens and pillows were nice. The flooring in the main part of the room is wood, which had some chips in the floor. The bathroom is all tile floors. The walls in the bath continued the theme of holes in the wall and even the tile backsplash of the sink had spot where it looked like someone was trying to plug up a hole or two. My room had a jacuzzi shower tub which I got excited about for a second before I took a closer look. The inside of the tub was dented and the coating was chipping and peeling in places. It also looked like part of the tub was permanently stained with dark spots. Like it wasn't properly cleaned. Not something I would soberly use. But even if you enjoyed a few drinks and thought that the jacuzzi tub would be a good idea, you still couldn't use this tub as there was no plug available to even fill it. I did briefly use the shower and after stepping into in, the bottom of the tub felt unstable. I felt like it could have collapsed on me at any moment. I also noticed that the bathroom in particular smelled like weed and upon inspecting the drawers of the sink counter, low and behold, a leftover bag of weed. Also, since you are by the waterfront, you are also right by the Amtrack (train), so this is definitely not a quite get away spot either. You definitely get to hear the waves at night which was beautiful and you get to wake up right by the beach, but those are about the only things going on for the place as well as Ashley, who was the front desk associate who was kind enough to check in on me to make sure I made my check in process as easy as possible. This place could be a luxury spot if only it was given the proper TLC. P.S. you should also be ok with stairs. You have to walk up at least 1 to two flights if you stay here. Parking in a garage is provided for an additional fee. read more

Friendly staff but accommodations are awful. I will not stay here again. I rented Casa Del Rey for two nights and for what I paid, it wasn't worth it. The electrical outlets don't work, the shower didn't have good water pressure, the floor outside is rotting, how can they think this place is safe? There is rust throughout the room- fireplace, shower, and outside areas. It was pretty embarrassing to have people come over. The room did not look like what's on their website. Disappointing. The location is awesome but that's the only thing going for this place. The bathroom was in desperate need of updating and I killed two German cockroaches in the room. The door to the room only has a flimsy knob lock and the keyed gates into the building were constantly being left open. You can hear all of your neighbors activities all day and night. read more

The location and views are awesome. The employees I talked to were nice. Ok, there is good... We checked in after hours so the front desk was closed. We got to our room and we found a cockroach by the door. I got rid of that one and a few minutes later we see another cockroach on the wall. I started looking around and noticed there was a rug instead of carpet in the closet of one of the bedrooms. I lifted it up and saw several cockroaches scurry under the baseboards. And dead cockroaches on the rug. I also noticed that water had been leaking from an ac unit. Instead of fixing it, a floor mat had been put down and it looked like black mold was growing on the laminate floor underneath. I called the after hours number and was given a new room. The second room was much smaller and had a pullout sofa instead of a second bed. The problem with the sofa was the frame of the pullout was broken and didn't sit flat on the floor, which made it so you felt all three bars when you laid down. I'm pretty disappointed with this place. I give it 2 stars because the employee I talked to was friendly, got me a new room and comped my parking (a whopping $10)but I never got an actual apology. I won't be back and definitely would not recommend it. I wasn't able to get a good pic of most of the roaches I saw because they ran under the baseboards when I looked around. We have had happy motel and hotel stays many times. This was not one of those pleasant times. We checked in around 12:30 PM but did not bring in our luggage at that time. We only put our perishables in the room's refrigerator. We didn't linger. We instead returned around 10 PM to bring in our luggage and to try and settle in for the night. While we were inside the room around 10 PM, while we were still trying to bring in our luggage, the room's door deabolt jammed in a locked position with the door closed. The broken deadbolt prevented us from leaving the room as there is only one door. There was no telephone inside the room. Our phones did not have service inside the room. We had partial success at removing the deadbolt (to try and leave the room) but the door was still closed and jammed. The portions of the deadbolt we were able to remove showed the deadbolt was in very poor condition with lots of corrosion. Next, to attempt to contact the motel's management and exit the room we removed the screen of the room's only window and climbed out of the window. This was done because we'd neither land or mobile phone service in the room. Now outside the room, we telephoned the motel's line, twice, over maybe 20 minutes. Our calls were sent to voice mail. We did not receive a return telephone call. We then phoned the fire department to come and unblock the closed door of the room. Around 20 minutes later, the motel's manager, Adriana, arrived in person. She said that when we checked-in she already knew the deadbolt was broken, but that she did not tell us about it then. Adriana said the motel had no other rooms available. I then said we'd prefer not to stay in a room with a broken lock leading to a public area, and requested a refund at that time. Manager Adriana said we must contact Hotel Tonight to get the refund. We contacted Hotel Tonight and requested the refund. Hotel Tonight then contacted manager Adrina who declined a refund, offering only 50% of the room's cost. Casa Tropicana has lost what could have been long-time customers over this. The results of all this are completely unacceptable. The room was unsafe and uninhabitable. Following their policy, we have requested that Hotel Tonight continue to investigate this and provide the full refund. We also opened a dispute with our credit card company. read more

The view was amazing, but the room was disappointing. The bathroom had rust coming from the pipes in the ceiling. Definitely needs cosmetics upgrades. Room feels like a fishbowl. We ended up checking out a day early . We still got charged for two, but we just weren't having fun with all the traffic right in front of our window and lack of places to really go read more

NOT IDEAL FOR COUPLES despite romantic ambiance ! Please read Overall this is a lovely hotel - but please read through !!! You can't get any closer to the beach or pier - it is literally right across the street . The staff was very courteous and helpful . Every room is different and unique. Our room was beautifully decorated - we were in room Casita en Fuego. The bed was to die for comfortable , and the snack baskets and breakfast baskets were packed to the rim with complimentary goodies . The communal kitchen was well stocked with coffee , fruit ,oatmeal and popcorn - all complimentary too . The view from the community balcony was lovely. Beach chairs , bags and umbrellas were provided in every room . The cons however are what probably won't keep us coming back ... My husband and I were hoping for a romantic weekend away for our anniversary . We have 3 kids and wanted to just relish the time just us two. We knew about the communal balcony when we booked , but weren't banking on the kitchen - ESP it being right outside our room. We could hear everybody and see everyone's shadows , despite the blinds being drawn . (Maybe invest in some curtains too). There were kids racing up and down our corridor ALL AFTERNOON. We really felt we were in some sort of community bubble and were scared to talk above a whisper even in our rooms , let alone have a nice romantic afternoon . I really don't know why they would place a family with children in a room next to a couple that they knew was on their anniversary . Then people were on their phone right outside our front door in the morning, holding lengthy conversations . *the train right across the street got a bit obnoxious in the afternoon , but it was manageable . Ear plugs are provided in the room *the "jacuzzi tub " in our room had no bubbles, and was obnoxiously loud - gave me a headache which was counteracted the purpose of me trying to relax. *and for the sake of nit picking , the ice machine was broken. Overall, while a very lovely property , we didn't get the romantic weekend we desired . Totally felt like we were two teenagers sneaking away in my boyfriends bedroom praying the parents wouldn't catch us, instead of a married couple celebrating 9 years of marriage . Needed to get out of San Diego for the weekend and by luck located Casa Tropicana online. Fortunately they had one room left for me and my dog Winnie (@winnieblove) You can't beat the location across from the pier, beach and train stop. Yes the place is a little beach tired but the people we made up for it. Front desk gal Adriana couldn't have been more helpful. My dog was not allowed on the beach so she went above and beyond. She had one of her friends watch my dog on Friday and Saturday so I could go out on the beach and hang out with my brother and his family. And the Pierside restaurant right next-door was amazing. My waiter Brandon, who took care of me five times, was great and the bartender Archie was on top of it even though he was slammed. Will definitely make another trip up here soon, CT read more

This is a hidden gem in San Clamente. You can tell it's a community that serves themselves and references other local business. The room my girlfriend and I had was a luxury suite with an open shared patio facing the beach. Matt and Liz took good care of us. It's in a Marine town and you got two types of people there; Surfers and Marines. Everyone there is super cool except for the Asia man in the souvenir boutique down the street. I recommend this place to anyone looking for a beach paradise getaway. We even had a hot tub in our room. Cable and Internet access. read more

Pros: It is right across from the beach & pier. The manager is friendly. Cons: Not a romantic, quiet or peaceful get away. My wife booked the hotel as a surprise for our 25th Anniversary. Cost: It is very expensive for what you get. I was shocked to learn that the room cost over $300 for a night. At $120 It may have been ok, but there was too many other flaws. No privacy at all, stairs are too close to the room. The common area tables & chairs are outside your room, the blinds don't close well, so people can look into the room so you will need to get changed in the bathroom if you want any privacy. Outdated: the room is outdated, 1 chair, 1/2 a table that is folded in half to make the room look bigger, funky decor. Cleanliness: bathroom was fine but there was a layer of sand all around the mattress base. Noise, the Metro link trains live across the road with trains sounding horns & stopping even late into the night. There is a restaurant directly under the room, where we heard drunken songs of " happy birthday " being sung fairly loud. No parking on site, it's down the street & around the corner. This place needs a thorough updating with sound proof windows, a good paint job, new decor, furniture, blinds that work and overall cleanliness taken up a few notches. read more

This place turned out to be nice... The person staying across from us was total douche bag. He came in at 3AM with two extremely loud women, waking up the entire hotel. We asked them to please keep it down, they agreed and kept on partying. We tried to contact the owners to no avail. The douche bag and his entourage finally settled down after repeated pleads to stop. The next day we told the nice lady at the desk what happened and she was surprised that we were unable to reach the owners....hmmmmm, really? Because according to other reviews, (that I didn't read until after we left) this is a common problem. ANYWAY, the lady at the desk was REALLY nice, she tried her best to make us happy, offering to move us and giving us token stuff. Thankfully the douche bag left that day, and we enjoyed the rest of our stay. It is a beautiful location and the people and I mean every single person who works there is SUPER nice. read more

We enjoyed staying here. Adrianna at the front desk was extremely helpful and kind. The hotel was very clean and quite at night. The sunset was spectacular and there were restaurants nearby. Room was clean but completely run down. Holes in the walls and no upkeep whatsoever. Non-working fireplace and spa. Tub is old and warped. Toilet paper holder hanging off wall. sink in bathroom leaked. The bed was the best thing and comfortable. Located across from pier which is nice. My wife and I stayed here for one night on our way down to San Diego and we wished we stayed longer! It is directly across from the beach and pier and walking distance from "Downtown" San Clemente and we loved our room with the ocean breeze flowing in at night! The room is cozy and romantic and they provide amenities for the beach as well as a bunch of snacks for breakfast and throughout the day. We also loved the communal lounging area directly outside of the room, and the staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming. All that being said, yes the Pacific Coast rail line runs directly in front of the hotel and the trains are quite loud, but if you're staying near the beach in San Clemente (or in most of the Beach Cities) that is something you are going to have to deal with regardless. I also think it's really too expensive for the room size and what you get (hence the 4 stars and not 5) but overall we'd definitely stay again read more

My boyfriend and I spent 2 nights here and LOVED IT AND WILL BE BACK. The location Cannot be beat!! They have free bagels and French presses so you can make coffee at your leisure. It's very secure. It's got an amazing view. Pierside restaurant downstairs is DELISH. Staff was so nice and the place was clean which is a big deal for me. Pros: Location Shared view verandas Ocean facing rooms Jacuzzi tubs in rooms Friendly and accommodating staff Clean clean clean! Cons: Mainly just one. We stayed in the Casita de sol on the first floor of rooms. It was great except this room along with 2 others border the kitchen common area which is in the atrium. Each morning, we were woken up before 7am (on vacation) by staff setting up some breakfast goodies - which is awesome - but, 630am? We are on vacation and wanted to sleep in, so that was a real bummer. While the website lists that this room has a common patio and an atrium view - it doesn't mention the kitchen, where folks are going to be making breakfast... and coffee.. and hanging out and talking is right outside your room. . Luckily we stayed on a Thursday and Friday so it wasn't as busy as I'm sure it could be, but we still left a little sleepy. read more

Loved that it was just a couple steps from the pier! You can't beat the location. You are also convenient to shops, restaurants, bars, entertainment. San Clemente does lack in nice hotels, but this boutique option was charming, cozy, and with a view that's affordable read more

Beware! This property is disgusting and nothing like the photos or descriptions on their website. When we rented the oversized room on the 4th floor we were told it had air conditioning, which was a lie. No air conditioning and all of the bedroom windows are bolted shut (yes, screwed shut) and do not open which I'm certain breaks fire code. Room was filthy, floors are concrete and haven't been cleaned in months I suspect. Dead bugs everywhere and many under the bed (possibly bed bugs) poor air circulation due to the windows being bolted shut. Many of the windows also have what appears to be black mold. Couch that folds into a bed was broken, manager is MIA and does not respond to any complaints. Haley at the front desk tried to help but was unable to do anything on her own and kept referring me to the manager. I left several messages for the manager but no response. This place is poorly managed and in major disrepair as shown in the pictures. I would not recommend! read more

Please never stay here. My room shared a wall with an outdoor common area balcony so it was constantly loud and noisy. The room 2 doors down from mine had a party until 1am and while staff says they attempted to tell them to quiet down, nothing was actually done. They should have shut it down and enforced their 9pm-9am quiet hours as they have posted on signs throughout the hotel. Or at least from like 10pm-7am? One of the party guests even slept on the outdoor balcony patio furniture next to my room and the sound of his phone going off woke me up at 5am. So I paid to get a whopping 4 hours of sleep. I would never stay here again. read more
