Living it up on my Birthday!
    Denise S.

Seaside boutique hotel with ocean view of the pier & colorful sunsets. Comfortable accommodations, wifi, heater, HD TV, deck overlooking the ocean. Great place to celebrate my birthday! Complimentary parking & in-room coffee. Close to many restaurants & shops. Attentive staff including Adrianna at the front desk & both Edith & Liz...she's been there 30+ years! Just like a home away from home. Although no fault of the hotel, the obnoxious noise from the freight trains & Amtrack at all hours of the night & day, including beeping, security gates & horns blasting, I would not recommend staying downtown in San Clemente until the curfew gets back in place, which was terminated in December 2020 according to the chamber of commerce. It's unfortunate, since this hotel has picturesque views & outstanding service.

**TOO PET "FRIENDLY"** PROS: * Beach front property * Cute beach themed design * Soft cozy bedsheets * Fire place and air conditioning * Really great water pressure * Pet friendly * 2 cozy bathrobes CONS: * Horrible customer service: ugly attitude. Had no idea where or who it was until the bartender next door got her. * No complementary water in room for coffee * Place needs some serious upgrades. It's showing its age * The floor had long black hairs on (I'm blonde)it and the entire room (bed and coffee machine included) had cat or dog hair on it. We were grossed out. I get pet people don't mind all that but this is unsanitary! * Pet friendly: horrible if you have allergies to pets * Thin walls. We heard all two minutes of [it]!! We had no idea it was pet friendly. We would not have stayed there if we knew. Having said that, the view was beautiful in the common area. Our room had a little view of the ocean. You can hear the waves crashing at night and although there's some craziness here and there, everyone is generally nice. No complementary anything but plenty of towels and there's a mini fridge ***BRING WATER, SNACKS, YOUR FAVORITE SPIRITS*** Water and snacks are provided for a ridiculous price but beggars can't be choosers!! We couldn't find the light switch to the 2nd floor balcony but made the best of it. Pet owners were very considerate, do likewise! Have a doggone great time!

    Common Area

Pros: - close to the beach/pier - allows pets - allows late check in - parking garage (although you pay for each day) - staff were nice/helpful Cons: - rooms are much smaller than pictured - generally run down; the common areas between the rooms are quite dirty - the walls are thin; could hear every step of the upstairs neighbors - sink water in the bathroom smelled like sulfur Overall, you're really just paying for the location. It was lovely to be able to walk easily to the beach, but you'd think for the amount charged for the rooms that the quality would be better. I've stayed in much cheaper hotels/motels that offered free coffee/tea - this place only had $3 water bottles available for purchase in the rooms. I'm not usually picky with hotel stays, but I definitely overpaid for such a so-so experience.

I have been here numerous times but I have never actually staid here. However, I watched this place over the past 6 years as it began the long slow process of rehabbing and refurbishing this grand old beach front building. It was even for sale once when I had money and I thought about buying it. There are not only great rooms for guests, but there is an owner's apartment with a pool - a true retirement paradise - or for a young family just starting out who wants a family business that includes paradise and a pool. What I have done is hang out in the nice bar, and eaten in the excellent restaurant. One day I will stay here for a night or two... with the right woman... the right bathing suit... and a pile of cash.

    hotel room and patio

My husband and I wanted a romantic night away from the kids. Love the location... so disappointed in the room. We booked the top floor, Casa del Rey, and as we walked up the 5 flights of stairs noticed chipping paint and rotting wood everywhere. Our private balcony had more chipped paint on everything and the furniture was terribly uncomfortable and sparse. Once the door was opened... very stale and stuffy... NO CARPET! Just a cement floor with chipped paint and a large shower with mildew. The step up to the bathroom was masked with torn blue tape, so we didn't trip. I really think this little hotel has possibilities and it doesn't seem like it would take too much to freshen it up... but seems like owners have given up. Pick a different spot for this beautiful location on the beach hand save yourself the money!

    Room 2

First, I want to apologize for the somewhat darker photos. I stayed here just last night as a treat to myself to get away from my room for rent living situation. Let's just say this place is good for if you really need a place to crash while your in the San Clemente area. As far as beach view luxury, this place falls highly short! The paint in the rooms is uneven and there are obvious spots where someone tried to cover holes in the wall. There were even spots above the window where there may have been a curtain rod. The "fireplace" may seem like a nice touch but the face framing of the fireplace is completely missing and the fire doesn't even get burning bright enough to glow the room. There were TV instructions but I seemed to only be able to get the music stations. They do provide a DVD player, so if you stay here, come prepared. The bed was fairly comfortable and the linens and pillows were nice. The flooring in the main part of the room is wood, which had some chips in the floor. The bathroom is all tile floors. The walls in the bath continued the theme of holes in the wall and even the tile backsplash of the sink had spot where it looked like someone was trying to plug up a hole or two. My room had a jacuzzi shower tub which I got excited about for a second before I took a closer look. The inside of the tub was dented and the coating was chipping and peeling in places. It also looked like part of the tub was permanently stained with dark spots. Like it wasn't properly cleaned. Not something I would soberly use. But even if you enjoyed a few drinks and thought that the jacuzzi tub would be a good idea, you still couldn't use this tub as there was no plug available to even fill it. I did briefly use the shower and after stepping into in, the bottom of the tub felt unstable. I felt like it could have collapsed on me at any moment. I also noticed that the bathroom in particular smelled like weed and upon inspecting the drawers of the sink counter, low and behold, a leftover bag of weed. Also, since you are by the waterfront, you are also right by the Amtrack (train), so this is definitely not a quite get away spot either. You definitely get to hear the waves at night which was beautiful and you get to wake up right by the beach, but those are about the only things going on for the place as well as Ashley, who was the front desk associate who was kind enough to check in on me to make sure I made my check in process as easy as possible. This place could be a luxury spot if only it was given the proper TLC. P.S. you should also be ok with stairs. You have to walk up at least 1 to two flights if you stay here. Parking in a garage is provided for an additional fee.

Friendly staff but accommodations are awful. I will not stay here again. I rented Casa Del Rey for two nights and for what I paid, it wasn't worth it. The electrical outlets don't work, the shower didn't have good water pressure, the floor outside is rotting, how can they think this place is safe? There is rust throughout the room- fireplace, shower, and outside areas. It was pretty embarrassing to have people come over. The room did not look like what's on their website. This place is sad and janky. 12 pics uploaded.

    Rug in the carpet

The location and views are awesome. The employees I talked to were nice. Ok, there is good... We checked in after hours so the front desk was closed. We got to our room and we found a cockroach by the door. I got rid of that one and a few minutes later we see another cockroach on the wall. I started looking around and noticed there was a rug instead of carpet in the closet of one of the bedrooms. I lifted it up and saw several cockroaches scurry under the baseboards. And dead cockroaches on the rug. I also noticed that water had been leaking from an ac unit. Instead of fixing it, a floor mat had been put down and it looked like black mold was growing on the laminate floor underneath. I called the after hours number and was given a new room. The second room was much smaller and had a pullout sofa instead of a second bed. The problem with the sofa was the frame of the pullout was broken and didn't sit flat on the floor, which made it so you felt all three bars when you laid down. I'm pretty disappointed with this place. I give it 2 stars because the employee I talked to was friendly, got me a new room and comped my parking (a whopping $10)but I never got an actual apology. I won't be back and definitely would not recommend it. I wasn't able to get a good pic of most of the roaches I saw because they ran under the baseboards when I looked around. Take a look for yourself though.

Established in 1953, the Beachcomber in is quintessential California bungalow motor hotel. It's unique placement on a San Clemente bluff, with panoramic views of the pier and coast are nothing short of stunning. The rooms have full kitchens, king beds, sofa beds and patios with Adirondack chairs, in case being inside, staring through an enormous picture window just doesn't cut it. The staff obviously knows what a special property this is and there is great pride in the presentation and up keep of the grounds. Friendly, welcoming faces morning, noon and night. Because this is a vintage property, maintaining its original build and charm, it does not conform to modern accessibility requirements. Some may find the rooms small compared to modern, chain hotels, but I found everything cozy, comfortable and - dare I say - sumptuous! Given the hospitality of the staff, I'm sure they would do all they could to accommodate any guest. In addition to the amazing evening sunset views of the Pacific, a plus for me, was the Amtrak Surfliner passing through, down below the bluff. Paul Simon may sing, 'Everybody loves the sound of a train in the distance', but I love the sound of a train close by! I find it very soothing and romantic. After the sun has set, it's time to gather around the large fire pit for easy conversations with fellow guests, maybe while you wait for your steaks to grill on one of their guest use BBQs. A lovely, relaxing way to ease into the night. We forced ourselves to leave the property and stretch our legs, walk the pier and roam the shops of nearby Avenida Victoria. But for REAL shopping in San Clemente, we took advantage of the free hop on/hop off trolley that runs seasonally and weekends(see separate review) that picks up just below the Beachcomber, at the San Clemente train stop. Weleft our car parked in our allotted parking space (1 parking space for those staying in Villas #1-12). Really, Beachcomber had everything we needed to settle in for a few nights and, yes, just "BREATHE". Cheers! "CC"

I tried booking this place 2 weeks ago for a short staycation with the bf and called the office based on Yelp reviews. Tina told me they were booked but recommended another inn across the street to try. She also told me to stop by so she could show me the property when I was in town for a future visit with them. I thanked her and under normal circumstances that would've been it, but her personality over the phone was just so pleasant that even though the place she recommended was booked before I ultimately found a place to stay in San Clemente, my mind was already made up that I wanted to see the place when we got to San Clemente. So glad we did. We had drinks at Fisherman's by the beach before walking up to meet Tina. She showed us one of the vacant rooms and I'm in love. Planning a future visit to stay at Beachcomber Inn the next chance I can. The room she showed us was sanitized, and you could smell the citrus in the room. The gorgeous window view from the was like a painting. And the convenience of being steps of the beach speaks for itself. Looking forward to making our way back here again, hopefully soon

Room has a sofa bed. Staff is very nice. We had the pleasure of meeting Ricky. He is amazing. Very nice, helpful and informative. NIGHT ONE: First night was a drag for sleep. We asked for the top floor upon arrival but were told they were all full at the top floor. I don't know why any hotel would put kids on a top floor. We had littles running at 11pm-12am and then from 4-6:30am running again and an adult stomping back and forth. After 2 hours I couldn't handle it anymore and called downstairs to have them call the room to have them stop. We were in room 236. They stopped for a bit and started back up at 6:45am. That was unfortunate. NIGHT TWO... used earplugs so I didn't have to hear the upstairs people stomping and kids running at 5am this time. The walls and floor are very thin. You can hear talking upstairs and next door. The hallways have a cold draft when it's cold. Our room started to smell like a wet damp towel on day two after we came back from being out all day. I assume it was due to the non stop rain and possibly leaks within the walls. The Dove soap does make a difference and makes all of the rooms smell good. We had to open the balcony door to air out the room. It makes sense why we see all of the rooms open when they are being cleaned out. They are being aired out before being occupied. NIGHT THREE: used earplugs so we didn't hear the new occupiers upstairs. But they were pretty quiet from 11pm to 7am. NIGHT FOUR: Ear plugs for the win lol. Still, overall, a great place to stay. I know renovations are expensive so fixing these thin walls most likely won't happen anytime soon. I would def stay here again but will remember to wear my earplugs every night Lots of parking. Feels super safe. The place is otherwise quiet. Sad part is that I looked forward to a heated pool and the pool was not heated. It looked nice though. I'm still made about the pool.... Couldn't even use it once. The water was freezing. Hotel itself is extremely clean. Our sheets were so clean. They smelled sooooo good. Staff was very presentable. Breakfast was good. Free breakfast every morning. 6:20-9:30 Mon through Friday and 7-10am on weekends. Cereals, bagels, toast, jelly's, jams. Peanut butter, yogurt, butter, omelets with cheese or ham, Boiled eggs, turnkey sausage, pork sausage, orange juice, coffee, milk, tea, cinnamon rolls, oatmeal, apples, oatmeal, bacon on some days, oranges, bananas and pancakes. They supply Dove soap (Dove hand soap, shampoo and conditioner) which is amazing. We brought our own Dove soap just in case because most hotels use smelly soap lol. Inside the room is a microwave, fridge, ironing board, tv, clean remote in plastic, hair blow dryer and a coffee maker. TIPs: -Bring ear plugs -Air out your room daily (open that patio) -Turning the heater higher than 81 makes the room smell burnt -keep the room temp at 75 as the cold comes in from outside or keep your neck warm -if you're here for the pool, call before making reservations to see if it's heated

I came here for a wedding block and did not check the reviews until after my stay and was shocked at all the negative reviews. A lot of the prior reviews all mention outdated rooms, but now in 2026 the rooms have been redone and they're great. The hallways/exterior/common areas are still quite dated, but the rooms themselves have been redone well. They're spacious and large and well apportioned. With that said, there are some negatives. First of all, they're still working on renovations in the common areas. A large portion of the lobby is petitioned off, and the pool and spa are both closed. Secondly, the room we were in the beds seemed on the small side, so if you were trying to put two larger people on one of the beds it may feel a little cramped. Lastly, there still seems to be some issues with management. I was lucky and all the staff I dealt with were great, but one of my friends had her room canceled last minute. I have stayed several times in the past year at a Fairfield Inn (Marriott) under construction but they did a much better job at setting expectations. What I didn't expect upon arrival was a good amount of parking taken up by construction materials and possibly construction vehicles. Additionally, when I checked in and inquired about breakfast I was informed that it would be available in the lobby as their dining area was under construction. My room was on the second floor, so I get in the elevator and press 2. Imagine my confusion when the second floor of the elevator is actually now the third floor. I wish the gentleman at the front desk would have mentioned that to me, but he did not. I figured it out but it was late (9:30pm) and I just wanted to get to my room, sit down and relax after a long day. My room was recently renovated but clearly not completed and I do not believe the city would have signed off on a unit that had tape on the sprinkler head in the bathroom, outlet covers missing (with exposed wires that one could accidentally touch at night in a pitch dark room) and quality control that anyone paying for a renovation would be unhappy with. I was also not informed that my patio door would not open as it was covered in plastic from the outside - so there was no way to access the balcony which was a nice perk to the room that I had reserved. Breakfast in the morning was not "a hot breakfast" as advertised on their website. Instead they offered a "grab-and-go" bag with a bagel, apple, orange, and yogurt. Coffee was also available but there was nowhere to sit. While I appreciate the disclaimer about renovations, they should have mentioned that the pool, fitness center, hot breakfast, and balconies were unavailable. The disclaimer was misleading and definitely not worth the points I redeemed for my stay. I did tell the front desk about the issues with the room and he said he would pass that along to the construction team. I hope management was also informed but I assume unlikely since I did not hear from them and it's been 3 days since my stay.
