We had a kitchenette, so that we could save some money cooking for ourselves as we awaited the $3K tenting of our home. Unfortunately, we could not bring the doggo to the suite, but other rooms there you can bring dogs. Not sure why and perhaps I asked, but forget if I found out. Anyway, the dog was just as happy staying at our neighborly dog sitter's house that she loves to visit and hang out with our neighbor. She probably is more spoiled there, so does not mind us dropping her off. The suite is clean and nicely kept. It is not the Ritz, so limited services and such, but it fit what we needed perfectly. We parked our golf cart in the reserved parking spot and pretended we were on vacation in San Clemente for a couple of days. I guess that is a staycation and we nailed it. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom was adequate and clean. There was a fan, AC unit and heater. We only needed the fan. We used the private outdoor seating area and even lit up a fire one night as they leave you wood for the fire pit. My Eagle Scout flex was lacking, as it took be a bit of time to get that fire pit raging with only a newspaper and pizza box. No kindling, just pretty good size logs. But, my persistence paid off and we had a great evening sitting by the fire. The one thing that was not great was the opened food that was in the cabinet. Potato chips, marshmellows and some other snacks. It wouldl have been better for those things to be cleared before we checked in. But that was my only complaint. Again, I recommend the Patriot, and the staff, if you need to get your house tented or if you have friends and family visiting our cool little town. Go. Sleep Well! HAVE FUN!!

Leslie also informed us of the complimentary bikes to use if we wanted to explore the town and how we were just in time to enjoy the complimentary wine and cheese from 4-5:30 in the common area. We grabbed our free bubbly, the vanilla bath salts for my wife to enjoy later, and proceeded to enjoy the cheese and assorted treats on the outdoor patio overlooking Dana Point. No better way to unwind! Pro tip: NEVER EVER SKIP THE FRESH BAKED COOKIES! The property is the perfect size to remain quaint like a bed and breakfast but big enough that you don't feel obligated to know each person coming and going. I would admit being in our mid 40's, we were on the younger side of guests during our stay, but this was a welcome surprise for us as we were looking for a quiet getaway for the evening for our 9 year wedding anniversary. The room was 212 which is an ADA accessible room but this I believe was provided at the special request of having a bathtub for my wife who values her baths on her getaways! The room faces the parking lot but this is a small sacrifice for what the true payoff was which was the special request... The giant jacuzzi tub which did not disappoint. It was large enough to fit two adults (not that we tried or anything *wink wink). The jets worked great and my wife raved about them. The room came with luxurious robes and slippers and all bath products were either local or unique brand. The room also came with a fireplace that was gas which started with the flip of a light switch. Another beautiful touch. It is always hard to find a bed that is comfortable enough while away from home as we are spoiled by our sleep number at home but this bed did the trick (which most chain or corporate hotels cannot accomplish!). The linens were soft and the room came with extra pillows and blankets on hand without having to ask for more. The complementary breakfast buffet in the morning was not your standard spread. It felt more refined and focused on the details. It was not your scrambled eggs from powder. It was two sunny side up eggs cooked to perfection. It wasn't generic underripe fruit, it was perfectly ripe fruit with an assortment of sides. My wife raved about the yogurt and toppings as did I about the oatmeal and toppings. Overall this could not have been a better short 1 night getaway for my wife and I to enjoy away from the hectic everyday life. It truly felt like we slowed down time and the blue lantern Inn accomplished all we needed in having a successful start to our anniversary celebrations.

The handful of cute inn/motor home vibe places I wanted steps from the beach were all booked up, so I did a Hail Mary and relied on Yelp to find this place. There are 2 yelp profiles for this place, assumably because they just updated it about 3 years ago so the profile with lower reviews isn't an accurate depiction of this place. 1. Booking - Easy peasy. I found this place and went to the direct link off yelp to their basic looking web site and entered my card info. No charges or holds as said on Yelp, until the day I checked in. 3 nights for $506.40 - no deposits or holds. Got a confirmation email once I paid when I got there, but a confirmation email once I booked would've been helpful to know that I actually booked it. Got a text reminder the day before and day off asking for my ETA, which was at 21:00. Service was friendly. The reviewer elsewhere on Yelp that commented on the Indian woman's command of the English language is clearly racist, because she's fluent and her accent is nothing short of straight Californian so I was pleased. She also informed us of the wifi info behind our door upon check-in. Would've been nice if they started up the AC or fan before we got there so it wouldn't be so stuffy once we got in. Will update once we check out but wanted to document initial impressions. 2. Room - Basic, clean, tastefully decorated. Updated for sure. Has what you need: mini fridge, glass door standing shower with decent (not great) water pressure and updated system. I liked that the shower head is detachable and is magnetic to reattach for those who don't want to rinse hair but want to wash off from neck down. Dispenser in shower has a decent supply of shampoo, conditioner and body wash. Both sides of bed have outlet but only one side has USB ports for charging. Mini fridge, no microwave, metal rack no closet with 2 hangers. We used the rack for holding the pack of bottled waters I brought for the trip. No need to hang anything because we weren't here for any formal event but I can see that as a possible issue. There's a flatscreen TV, though I don't watch TV. My first of 2 gripes here is the lack of towels. You get for the single room 2 bath towels, 4 face towels and 1 hand towel to share. You don't even get your own hand towel I guess. No mat to step out of the shower on, which to me, is a liability for the schmucks who can slip and fall out of the shower. And I'm alluding to my next door neighbors, which I'll get to in a sec. 3. Noise Level - this is where I want to knock another star off but won't because the only way you can control the ilk of clientele is pricing. It's off the street so you can hear cars which isn't a big deal to me but the raspy bitch (henceforth "RB" for short) next door is a downer. 4:30AM and I hear a voice in the distance say she's "going to call the sheriff." Then I hear a voice so close she could be outside my room respond, "Go ahead, call the sheriff", as she went on her hoarse, three-minute phallic, expletive laden diatribe. Initially I thought she was in a drunken stupor as to be expected at 4:30AM, but soon realized her annunciation of every syllable with such lucid clarity was indeed that of someone straight cray, which to me, is far scarier. Not sure if she is in the same room as the 2 guys with heavy southern accents but wouldn't be surprised. I turned to the bf, apologizing for booking a room with the RB next door. Bless him, he pats my hand and gently responds with loving words, "it's okay, there will always be a raspy bitch." I'll see if I can get another towel later for the shower floor but so far, not bad if you don't care to shell out $$$ for the ritz if your goal is to explore the area and not be in your room for anything more than sleep.

Ours included a fully stocked kitchen and a separate bedroom with living space overlooking the ocean, making it feel more like a beach apartment than a hotel room. A special thank you to Tasha, the front desk manager, who was incredibly warm and welcoming and truly set the tone for our stay. She recommended The Lighthouse, just steps from the hotel overlooking the harbor, and it ended up being a great spot with good food and beautiful views. We travel often and have stayed at many of the surrounding hotels in the area, and Bay Shores Peninsula has done a fantastic job with its renovations.
