Our choice to stay here was a nice thought but a bad experience in reality. We were met by the desk clerk who was as unfriendly as they come. Our reservation was for 2 adjoining rooms with 4 beds total which advertised up to 6 adults and 2 children. We had 6 total with us. 4 adults and 2 children. When making the booking I had just put in 2 adults 1 child as that is the makeup of each room. The desk clerk actually counted us out load and pointed at each person when we came back in with our bags. Mind you, there are others in the lobby which made it awkward. He then proceeded to tell me we had a problem because I had reserved with 2 adults and 1 child and that wasn't going to work. I said the room advertised up to 8 occupancy. He then told me well I will put it in the system and see what it says. We proceeded upstairs to me met with one of the worst nights sleep on hard beds and pancake pillows. It is too bad as I do like the historical building. If there hadn't been such an unpleasant, unwelcoming person greeting us, this may have been a better review. It makes a big difference read more

We had a reservation fo rthis tired old hotel in the middle of a small downtown that we left right before checking in! This place looks like a fire trap and is stuck in the 1930's! It is an old hotel on a main street in outdated White River Junction, which when it is all said and done should be closed and renovated itself. The place has an old lobby and smells of mothballs and musty odors. I was so turned off, I was in the middle of filling out the paperwork and dropped the pen and told the woman at the front desk no thank you! Do yourself a favor, do not go anywhere near this place! It is a place that should be boarded up and closed down. I felt like I was in the mid west in some one horse town. With all the places to stay in Vermont, go some place else. By the way, the rates don't agree with the looks of the place either!! read more

The Hotel Coolidge was built in 1849. If u want new go some place else. I like old, well maintained hotels with history, and this place is in great condition, clean, with flat screen TV, and located across from historic RR station and stores. At night it's quiet, but that's Vermont. read more

Staff is very polite, rooms are clean, very warm and cozy, excellent value for the money. With that said, it is a nearly hundred year old historic hotel is a small town. It can't be compared against a newly build modem hotel. You have to be the type of person to admire the character of old places. I do, and this place did not disappoint. We are always delighted to have a chance to stay in this old hotel in White River Junction; this was I think our fourth stay in the last few years. The hotel is a joy for those who enjoy properties with character, great staff, and unusual amenities. The lobby is an actual lobby, with a working fireplace that's used in cold weather. Room keys are actual keys. The building itself dates to about 1924, so it has steam heating, supplemented with in-room space heaters. (This is why the last star is not there; whatever else is great about it, this *is* a nearly 100 year old building, and some folks will find that off-putting. For us, it's part of the draw.) There are period decorations from the 19th century history of the hotel (it opened in the 1840s and has gone through several incarnations), and the rooms are spacious and gracious. Plumbing is very good, beds are comfortable, electric is plentiful for your devices, the rooms are scrupulously clean and wireless coverage is no problem. If the steam heat is on, you'll get the usual clanking as the system pressures up, but for the right guests, that's a feature. Note that this is a block from a functioning train station, so there will occasionally be trains passing and honking their horn for the traffic crossing. Staff is unusually friendly and helpful, and will work hard to make sure you are happy with your stay. You'll get a $4.50 coupon for breakfast for each guest at one of two fantastic restaurants (no, really) on the block, since there is no kitchen in the hotel at this time. White River Junction is undergoing a renaissance, quietly but with vigor, and the hotel is at the center of it. Several buildings that had been shut down are now reopened with bars and cafes stuffed full of people in the evenings, especially on weekends. The spectacular Turkish food at The Tucker Box is just down the block, and the town is an easy short ride from Hanover and Lebanon. We saw a lot of Darmouth students and families in town this time around. It's a small town with a lot of flavor and an up and coming vibe, and a great alternative to boxy chains at 3x the price. This is a hotel for people who want old-school affordable comfort in a style that is definitely rare these days. If you like old buildings with late 19th century touches, like sash-weighted windows and wooden floors and quietly chatting in front of a fire with other guests, this is one of your last chances to try a grand railroad hotel, updated but still maintaining its old-school character. Visit it while you have the chance; it's a great deal and a great charmer of a hotel. read more

I had a very off-putting experience. I didn't actually stay here because we were barred from doing so. In fairness we should have further checked out the travel rules in Vermont. But White River Junction is 5 minutes from the NH state line so the hotel should do a much better job making it very clear that (for most people) if you haven't been in VT for 2 weeks you cannot stay there. The elderly woman at the desk last night was very rude. The first thing she did was act like a crossing guard with her hands up at a stop and say "whoa" like we were too close for comfort - as were standing 6ft plus away with masks on, and plexiglass between us. My 36 year old wife and I were then talked to like schoolkids about the rules. Rather than asking us a bunch of questions in an attempt to make us feel stupid it would have been very easy to simply state that due to the regulations we couldn't stay there. She was very condescending. This happened last night. read more

It's a very old building apparently it started being built in 1848, so I was unsure at first when walking in how to feel. But the room was very nice, as well as the staff. The room we had (room 130) was a bit small, but still nice. The mirror in the bathroom freaked me out and got a laugh out of me and my girlfriend. Full size mirror right against the wall as you enter the bathroom. read more

This place was horrible, They staff was rude the place was freezing. They tell you one thing then do another. Charged more then they said. Someone fell in the bathroom on a wet floor with no sign and they did nothing. Plenty of other places to stay and nicer. read more

The Hotel Coolidge and specifically the staff, Tom and his manager, deserve a top-notch review for their customer service. I visited White River on business and booked through Expedia for the first time ever-- Expedia completely screwed up my reservation dates and room arrangement-- after frustrating calls to Expedia I finally spoke directly to the staff at the Hotel Coolidge and they immediately understood and responded with an absolutely fair and warmly communicated correction to my reservation. Furthermore, once my partner and I had arrived the lingering affect of Expedia's error continued to affect the payments, yet again they responded with understanding and good cheer. The stay was very enjoyable and the location was perfect, it was clean and quaint. We had a great stay at the Hotel Coolidge and I would strongly recommend it to anyone traveling in the area! YOU ARE AWESOME TOM!! My wife and I were a bit disappointed with our stay at the Coolidge. We stayed two nights in the middle of the week. The hotel was quite noisy, full of creaking floor boards and sounds from every direction. Anyone passing in the hallway sounds as if they were in the room. It made it very hard to relax and feel like we had a private room. Also, the website promised free WIFI, but it only worked close to the lobby, not in the room. I wish they had been said that upfront. The website also said there was a free breakfast which was just a Keurig coffee maker, a bag of english muffins, and few grenola bars. The second morning the "free breakfast" was a coupon for a free coffee in the cafe next door. read more

As many reviewers have stated, this is an old hotel. It is not old in the charming sense, though, and seems to lean on that "historic" excuse to allow for stained bathrooms and rooms, neglected fixtures and broken...everything. Bathroom door didn't close, shower was decidedly crooked with lukewarm water, AC worked but the room is poorly sealed so it never really cooled down. WiFi internet exists, but it was likely set up by an amateur as it was randomly named, sporadic, and all-in-all non-functional. Parking is terrible. Either you try your luck getting a street spot (limited to 2 hours, Monday-Saturday business hours) or you park behind the building (far from the only available entrance) where your car is almost certain to get broken into. Neighborhood isn't particularly welcoming, with plenty of sketchy folks to harass guests for rides, smokes, cash, etc. Staff is present, but offers little more than being warm bodies. A fairly simple request was met with apathy and rudeness. Pay the extra few bucks and go elsewhere. If we had been in town for more than a night, we would've left. read more

Beware, I called in with my credit card to pay for a room for my cousin who doesn't have one and wanted to stay at Coolidge during his travels. I was clearly quoted $45 and I even recall confirming it a second time as she ran the card. Days later I see on my statement that I was charged $75. I understand that simple mistakes happen but when I tried to get this resolved the women lied to my credit card company saying she quoted me $75, completely untrue and fraudulent.....and all over $30. read more

Stayed here on our way across country on bikes. Nice turn of the 1900 century hotel that has been kept in excellent shape, nice long wide hallways and large rooms. A hotel with some history and character. Service was great, host and hostess were friendly and knowledgeable. Great location, right downtown, across from the train depot. This is the way hotels should be. Great value and convenience for modest price. The owners and staff made us feel like family -- repeatedly. The room was large and clean; bed firm. Really convenient to train and walking around downtown; nice pubs and restaurants within 5 minutes. Old and charming. If you need Holiday Inn plastic, don't come. Terrific free Wi-Fi. Hotel Coolidge is a charming older Hotel that transports you back in time. The rooms are comfortable and very clean. The hotel guide book is a history lesson in itself and the Gish Murals are not to be missed... but you have to ask to see them because sometimes the room is in use. The town of White River Juntion has a lot going on- shops , a Museum. Then there are all the sites around the town. Oh and the area is terrific for music lovers. Musicians are always playing somewhere nearby. The staff is efficient and friendly. read more

As a native of the town of White River Junction, I had felt I was unnecessarily treated rudely by the staff here. For a brief time one adjacent room was used by the new Cartoon College Of Vermont. There was a computer in this room. For a while , I used this computer. However, when A guest ,or someone from the Cartoon College wanted to use the computer I politely signed off of the computer and left the premises. There were also some interesting books in this area , that I stopped by to read once in a while. While I heard no complaints from Cartoon Studies of Vermont, a staffer from Hotel Coolidge tells me "I have received orders from the top" to ask you to leave the building. I was not causing anyone any problems at all.. For medical reasons, I left my hometown of 40+ years, I have now moved away from my hometown of 40+ years, and I find it very difficult to return. read more

These guys have a serious administrative problem. I booked a confirmed reservation with them through Expedia. Two months later they sent me an email (not even a courteous phone call with an apology) saying sorry they were overbooked and could not honor my reservation. I'd be very careful making plans that count on them having a room for you - even with a reservation. read more

We like old and quaint, and this is it! For the budget price, it's much more fun than a chain motel. We got an odd-shaped suite with king-sized bed and sitting room; we could have laid less and taken an old-style double bed, but we decided on a modest splurge. No problems with cleanliness and service.When we wanted to supplement the continental breakfast with our instant oatmeal, they were willing to provide cereal bowls. We should have asked to see the historic mural paintings sooner; when we were checking out, there was an event going on in the room with the murals. We definitely would stay there again. read more

My first impression upon check-in was a big oh-oh. My credit card was taking a long to process and the clerk asked my to check whether someone was using the ATM. What? Ok, this is a funky old hotel. But, for the price it was more than adequate. We had two rooms for three days. The first room was nice sized with two single beds, a little sitting area, normal sized TV and a normal bathroom. My room however, was comical; we literally belly laughed. The room was really two tiny single rooms separated by a very tiny bathroom. The two rooms were not much larger than the double bed in them. The rooms each had a mini-t.v on a swivel wall mount; kind of like a hospital (just smaller). The building itself is old. The floors slant, the carpets could use some updating, the furniture, etc. But, it also had character. The woodwork was first rate, and there is a lovely fireplace in the lobby and it has free wi-fi. The staff is professional and accommodating. The neighborhood is fine, there's a couple of places to eat, a coffee shop at the end of the block and a food co-op around the corner. Again, for the $ it's just fine, way more charm than the Super 8 up the block. Would have no qualms about staying again. read more
