Kind of perfect, depending what perfect means to you. I've stayed at swanky, I've stayed in converted palaces, I've stayed at corporate, and I've stayed in tents with cots. This place was... distinctive... in a good way! Like it has character. The lobby has puzzles and games. The staff are friendly. Not in an overly formal and obsequious way -- they're not hotel robots -- but in a natural, human way. The beds are really springy. Boing Boing! You can tell where they decided not to spend a fortune having an electrician pipe wires through their antique moldings, and instead discreetly ran the wires on the outside of the walls. The bathroom felt like it was last updated in 1950. The wide, wood-floor hallways have obvious dips and rolls in the antique wood planking. But it was clean. The price was right. There's a dictionary in the hallway, to read, I guess. They hide little miniature figurines throughout the hotel (common areas and rooms) for children to find. The one real knock is noise. The rooms are not well soundproofed at all. And you can definitely hear the freight train whistle at night. If you're a light sleeper, please don't stay here. read more

So I get that Vermont is a tourist destination and people will come regardless. That being said... you would think that they would do a better job of at the minimum maintaining the integrity of the building and making it feel safe for those who are visiting. The first thing you notice when you walk in is the musty smell and the water damage that covers the place from literally head to toe. The roof to the flooring... there is visible and notable damages. It's not great when waiting to check in, some random guest says "there's water drip next to the outlet" The rooms are also similar in condition. Bathroom is old and rusty (not to be confused with RUSTIC), the tub doesn't drain, and it's just dirty. I am disappointed in the fact that the location is prime as it's central to all tourist attractions for Vermont and there are wonderful restaurants in walking distance. Also the staff (at least the front) seems very kind and friendly so there that. That being said, I do not recommend this place... it's not comfortable and it gives you the "itchy" feeling. Shame on the hotel industries for not keeping up with changes and hiding behind the " we are old and historic" you can be both historic/old but functional and clean read more

This hotel is like something out of The Shining. There was a bat in the hallway. That's not the worst of it. The guy at the desk said he needed my credit card in case I threw feces on the wall. The manager said he's usually such a nice guy. The place is run down and sad. They can't even work up the energy to change the filthy awning. Don't go there. read more

The staff is very friendly here. The woman who checked us in especially. Giving three stars for her personality ! We read a lot about this hotel before we booked it. It's history is amazing. However, it is very rundown. Our bed was lower at the head than the foot. The tub was so old it was yellowing. The furniture in our room was worn through to the padding in spots. Something out of the Shining. Room was smelly, wall paper peeling, towels were smelly, and bathroom was not only dated but not very clean. I kept my flip flops on in the shower and in the room the entire time. The mattress seemed like two twins pushed together, and was so uncomfortable I could hear guests above us talking, and walking, and dropping things. Definitely a historic spot, but in dire need of remodeling. The offensive bit was the $2 per Kerig pod for your morning coffee. I mean really pushing it there people! Felt very uncomfortable and unsafe! Please see video before considering staying here. We had stayed here many times before without issue. We thought this place was cute and homey. I told all my friends and family great things. However, all good things come to an end eventuallly. Prior to today, I met a very nice gentleman who worked at the front desk and he and my daughter would play the piano together. Now they employed primarily a man with a red beard and a lady with long black hair working the front office. It now feels more like a prison system and  these two co-conspire to keep guard. If anything, they taught me how NOT to treat anyone including guests. Because, I also work in the hotel industry, and I am always trying to better my hospitality skills. I came in around 2pm, which wasn't anything crazy. Normally hotels will check to see if your room is ready at this time. When I work the front desk at my hotel, I check people in as soon as the room becomes ready. However, the lady with long dark began yelling at me at that check-in was at 4pm, but then started mumbling something else that it could be ready in 30 mins. Neither I nor my daughter understood what she was saying She just sounded very angry, belligerant, and mean. I had lots bags that I had already carried in from the car, so I said there is no way I am carrying all these bags back out to the car. I guess it is no longer customary in this day and age where the host makes you feel welcome and greets you or remembers you, because I have been here many times before but they didn't care. Instead I got a very rude awakening. The housekeeper then interrupted front desk clerk and said give us until 2:30 and we will check you in. So, I waited, and she checked in everyone but me, and still ignored me. So I said you obviously have something against me, is it because I am a white woman? Sarcastically, but knowing these extreme liberal idiotos have zero sense of humor and nor do they comprehend the fact that I know the way they are. If I were, in fact, a minority they would have been on their knees kissing the ground I walk on and rolling out the red carpet for me. But truly, because I am only a white woman, they treated me like garbage. And, even worse, the man behind the desk began to stalk me. After checking in, and going out for dinner and other things, we came back to the hotel around 8pm, only to walk by the front desk to see that weird creep had my picture posted on his computer, and he was googling my name and stalking me online. My daughter began crying and feeling uncomfortable, so I confronted him, and he began harassing me. I demanded a  refund and wanted to leave, but he refused and told us to go to our room like we were children. I called the police and they assisted. It is sad that I had go through all this, all because I wanted to check in a little early. They should be charged with illegally collecting information to stalk their customers. It is not safe here. My place may not have the greatest reviews either, but at least I know my customers and which reviews are genuine and sincere. Regardless, this place will eventually be shut down, because the building itself is dilapitated and falling apart. Hotel Coolidge - Front desk - Hotels Near Me - White River Junction, Vermont

On a 5 day ski trip to Vermont and New Hampshire my stay at White River Junction was the only place I stayed more then 1 night and I am happy that I choose the Hotel Coolidge. The Hotel Coolidge is a cool old hotel that is loaded with atmosphere. Hotel Coolidge is an older building which stretches over a full block so it is near to restaurants and shops. The first floor lobby is warm and inviting with comfortable seating, a fireplace and a coffee and tea station. Check-in went well, the gentleman helping me was very friendly and well informed. I got oriented quickly and he managed to get my room ready for me early. Free parking was in a long lot behind the hotel with an entrance into the lobby. My room was on the second floor right at the top of the stairs; got all of my gear to the room with the small elevator which is slow but reliable. The room itself was full of old school charm, roomy and comfortable. A large bed is in one room with a large bathroom and closet area behind it. They have upgraded the TV to a medium sized flat screen, there is good Wifi and a small refrigerator in the room. The only downside of the room was that the heat was a bit lacking, too compensate they have added a portable oil radiator as a supplement. I was also glad that I had brought a power strip and the chargers I needed to power my technology. The bed was comfortable and luxurious; it made for a couple of good nights sleeping. The TV had a limited number of cable channels and due to the weather not all of them were working; luckily with the good Wifi I was able to watch what I wanted on my phone. The shower was good, with very nice pressure and plenty of hot water. The toiletries provide were of very good quality. There is no provided breakfast currently, they will provide a voucher for $4.50 to use at the nutrition place off the lobby or at the Tuckerbox down the street. For me this did not work that well since the Tuckerbox was not open early enough for me to get to the ski areas and the meal replacement drink from the place off the lobby was expensive and not as satisfying as I would have liked. The saving grace was the coffee and tea station in the lobby which was well maintained and provide something in the morning. Overall I really enjoyed my stay at Hotel Coolidge, the staff is excellent, the place is charming and exudes a sense of history and feels like you have gone back in time. This is not a cookie cutter chain hotel, instead you will get a unique experience. As long as know what to expect this is an outstanding place to stay and well worth a visit. Our first clue should have been when the front desk person asked for photo I.D. for each person in the room " per fire marshall." This place is a fatal fire waiting to happen. Ancient, rundown, huge wooden structure with outdated electrical and windows that don't open, and space heater in the room. There was black mold in the toilet tank and the toilet backed up. It was dark and smelled of grime. The town should shut it down. read more

If you're looking for a predictable cookie-cutter chain hotel, this is not the place for you. If you like quirky, old places with lots of character and the imperfections to go along with it, you'll love the "charm" and affordability of the Coolidge. Some of the staff were surely at times but if you don't take anything too personally, you'll find it part of the charm. Beds were comfortable. Room was clean. Room was clean, bed comfy, hot water in the shower, good service up front and a breakfast voucher and parking is included. Yes the hotel isn't perfect as some of the other reviewers note, but those folks seemed to think they were paying 150 bucks for a fancier chain hotel next to the highway. Yes the wallpaper isn't perfect and being over a 100 years old their are some quirks, but for 75 bucks a night on a weekend, it was a great deal and I'll be back. read more

I stayed at Hotel Coolidge in late October. It was less expensive than Lebanon but in hindsight, I'm not sure it was worth the aggravation. The night that I stayed there, there was a massive ball for Halloween with a DJ that started at 9 PM. Even with earplugs, the place was reverberating. On top of that, I was charged $100 deposit for my dog. And had to call twice because after a week, it still hadn't been refunded. i'm still waiting. I was told this morning it should show up tomorrow or the next day. I will definitely call again if it doesn't. read more

My kid and I are writing this at 6:45 AM after being awoken by all of the radiators in the rooms coming to life. We have baseboard heating at home so he had no idea what was going on when the sound of banging metal began (aliens!). It's the cherry on the top of this stay. If you come, know that there is a parking lot behind the building they might forget to tell you about. It is incredibly small so might be full in which case you will be hoofing it from the municipal lot around the corner and across the street they also did not tell you about until you walked into the lobby with your sleepy child because they didn't pick up the phone when you called at 10PM. It is not far but a drag. There is no ambient noise like fan or AC so you can hear every step and conversation happening around and above you. Needless to say, we did not sleep well. The beds are no luxury either. These are 6 inch mattresses if that. Even my kid noticed that the chain locks looked like they could be opened from the outside which made it even creepier when walking to our room we noticed a door chained but open to the dark room beyond. There are also what look like double heavy metal doors held open at the beginning of the upstairs hallway which immediately made me wonder if they'd be closed at some point and worry about fire. That said, it's got great location when everything is open. The market up the street was a lifesaver. read more

I really feel like we've just inadvertently stumbled into an incomparably awesome version of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, or Fawlty Towers... Thanks Mother Nature! I couldn't BE more pleased about being stranded in this gorgeous space, with its awesome cast of characters! :) :) The perfect storm (literally) of supersnowy roads and a BS rental car, completely ill-equipped for the conditions, brought us as walk-ins to the Coolidge. We were welcomed warmly by both crackling wood fire and charming desk clerk, and very quickly (but be thoughtfully!) squared away into a room that perfectly meets our needs. The Coolidge is a multiuse hotel (it also houses travelers via International Hostel, as well as apartments for long-term residents) with a loonnnnnnnng history. It's absolutely stunning, and it's historic character is evident at every turn, but it in no way feels forced or contrived... Organic history! Words can't appropriately describe the cast of characters in the guests, residents, and staff that we've met in our few hours here - it feels like we've walked into the best British sitcom alternate universe ever, and it's GREAT. I'm SO in love with this place!! Keep in mind: Neighborhood is phenomenal - close to Dartmouth U, outdoor activities, breweries, culture. Walking distance (as in, on the same block or 2) to awesome restos, galleries, boutiques, and - get this! - the Cartooning University/Institute, started by Charles Schultz. How flippin' cool is *that*?! :) :) Free WiFi. Free 24 hour coffee. They do have an elevator (especially handy when you've got to carry in, in addition to your regular luggage, 6 cases of hoppy Vermont goodness do that it doesn't freeze in your BS rental car #shoplocal) There's a "guide" binder in each room that would put Fodor to shame - extensive info on local eats, activities, attractions. It's super affordable! Best hotel I've ever stayed in, but also the least expensive.. this night is a total win! read more

This is an old hotel that is in desperate need of renovations. The lobby has furniture that was in the 1800s and never been cleaned , carpet is rippled and the cushions have rips. We slept with a chair under the door handle do to the door was janky. TV worked like a poltergeist was there. This place just needs to shut down. read more

Hotel is rundown. We had to ask for basic amenities like hangars, an iron, and ironing board at the front desk. What we were handed were old wire hangars and a nasty desktop portable board. Condition of the room was in far worse condition than my son's dorm room. Walls were so thin we could hear every conversation from the room next to us (and they were speaking normally ). I dropped something on the floor and got a view under the bed--gross. Clearly, the carpet has not been cleaned in ages. This is not the quaint hotel advertised. We were completely taken advantage of for graduation weekend. Criminal to charge anything over $200. read more

We were there Saturday night 10/7/17. We learned about the Coolidge on the King Arthur web page. There were other hotels but all were full. The Coolidge rooms looked good online so we made a reservation. The last room. The lobby was clean and comfortable. Our room was small but clean and comfortable. Yea it was old and showed it's age. No tub. Just a shower. It worked! Lots of hot water. Wifi worked as die the TV. The room door locked but didn't seem secure. Parking was available in a small lot in back. read more

This review is about the hostel rooms. When I led a few AYH trips here several decades ago, I don't recall this being so bad. Perhaps it was just the room I was given (211), but this mattress should have been declared dead a decade ago and replaced. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT even think about staying here. This hotel is unsafe and unsanitary. I have stayed at a lot of hotels. Some good and some bad but this place is definitely the WORST by far!! Every ceiling has water stains from leaks. The wall outside our room was all bowed and stained. I can only imagine how much mold is in the walls from all the water damage. The hotel is in complete disrepair! The radiators in the room didn't work so there were 2 space heaters. Totally unsafe! Although the pipe coming down to the radiators was scalding hot and burnt my palm and fingers when I touched it to look out the window. Very unsafe for children. We were in room 202 which is next to an exit door with no alarm when opened and no lock. A slight touch of the door and it flies open with a with a straight drop 2 stories to the pavement and an old rusted fire escape. I was sick all weekend knowing that any child could push it open with the slightest touch and fall to the ground. The roof in the back U-shaped parking area is missing 95% of the wood. It's all corroded and pieces are hanging off it. I would not want to be staying under it in any heavy snow. That roof is going to collapse. Don't expect to sleep. The hotel is across the street from the train station. The train runs all night and when it's not running it sits there idling, rumbling the whole building. The walls are paper thin and you can hear people talking clear as day. Enough so that I kept jumping up thinking people were in our room. A sofa with no legs, broken toilet paper holder that can slice your hand open. There is nothing nice that I can say about this hotel. I wouldn't stay here if it was for free. I loved my 3 nights at the Hotel Coolidge. I had a suite consisting of a sleeping room, a sitting room and a small bathroom and featured most of the amenities you need: wifi, tiny flat screen in each room, refrigerator, AC, box fan, hair dryer (available at the front desk). I was just missing the coffee maker because I get up well before the attached coffee shop opens at 7, but they have Keurig for $1 in the lobby. Like everyone else mentioned, this is a historic hotel and the finishes are a bit dated, the floor is creaky. But to counter the 1-star commenter, it does not smell of mothballs and there are fire doors, sprinklers and exterior fire escapes. I travel a lot for work and this is a nice change of pace from the usual sterile chain hotel. And I know that I'm supporting an independent small business that has super friendly staff. (I gave them an extra star just for this fact, knowing how tough it is in this business :) The surrounding area features several excellent restaurants within walking distance, one nice little dive bar and quite a few boutiques and shops that close much too early and aren't open on Sundays so I didn't get to investigate them. read more

I'm not really understanding the few negative reviews here. This hotel is historic, not new. But it's very clean and the innkeepers and staff have been very pleasant. My room was actually two small rooms sharing a bathroom, which was great for a little privacy. There's a flat screen TV and AC/heater. It was super quiet, which I liked. I'm sure there's more nightlife closer to Dartmouth, but I'm old and uninterested. I had a great dinner (within walking distance) of duck and pumpkin soup, then had some local coffee and an egg sandwich for breakfast from the coffee shop on the corner. I was here for a conference and would definitely recommend it (unless you're a fancy-pants). read more

I've stayed here three times and each stay was a little worse than the last. I like that it's a historic old building with a red brick edifice, but when you get past whatever charm that holds for you, it is pretty much an overpriced dump. I had even looked into staying at the Coolidge before coming to Vermont. It advertises that it has long-term rates, so I called and talked to the manager, Judith, I believe her name is. I asked about the long-term stays and she told me it is $700 a month for a room with a bathroom and kitchen you share with many other rooms, which is no great bargain. You also have to pay a $50 non-refundable application fee to be considered for one of those rooms and have to be enrolled in a local college or be able to prove that you have a local job waiting for you. I also asked her about the noise from the train station which is right across the street and she told me she had stayed overnight in the hotel and had never been bothered by the noise. She was a little snippy about it. Over a year later, I ended up staying there. The room was clean, but as other reviews have pointed out, not terribly well maintained, and the walls are paper thin. You can hear conversations in the hallway with crystal clarity and the sound of somebody walking past your room sounds like a piano being rolled down the corridor. The next morning, after I'd checked out, I was sitting in the lobby killing time until it was time to catch my train, when Judith came in and, after seeing me, had a whispered conversation with the desk clerk. That is, the conversation was whispered on her side. He didn't seem to have an "indoor" voice, so I heard his side of the conversation clearly and it was obvious he was referring to me when he said something like, "No, he just checked out." She left, and having noticed my head turn when I heard him talking about me, he said to me, "You've got good ears!" He then went on to explain that the manager had thought I was a homeless person who had just wandered in, which according to him was a frequent occurrence. I don't know why he thought telling me any of that would make the situation better, but in my subsequent stays there he impressed as being consistent if not particularly intelligent. It was convenient but not cheap to stay there again when traveling around the state, so for my third and last visit, I elected to stay in their "hostel" wing, which cost about $60 a night and has a shared bath and no TV. You do get a private room, but the bed in it was a cot like the old-fashioned kind they have in the army, or used to any way. It was creaky and sagged in the middle and felt like sleeping on a set of bare springs, which it very nearly was. These rooms are in fact the same rooms they charge $700 a month for, assuming you qualify for them (if not they get to keep your $50 application fee). I think three stays with this place is enough for them to strike out, and they have. I have heard a lot of negative things about VT in general and White River Junction in particular and every one of them has proven entirely true. read more

This is an old hotel so expect that going in. I mean, yeah, the fixtures are not new and the floors are slanted, but -- traveling alone for business -- I thought this place was pretty great. Not a cookie cutter hotel for sure! I had a two small rooms separated by a bathroom. This was perfect for me since I worked in one room and then went to sleep in the other. Great coffee shop a couple of doors down and a bar next door (that, oddly, was running out of beer on a weekday night for some reason). You can hear train whistles at night but I like that kind of thing. My only negatives were that it might be tight for two people and there is no coffeemaker in the room (again, great coffee place down the street), but there was a fridge in the room which I always need (i work with cheese and need to keep samples cool). TV was a little small but I wasn't watching it anyway. read more

We made an unplanned stop & found the Coolidge Hotel by chance. It was a Saturday evening at about 8 when we stopped there, & there was nothing available within walking distance of the hotel for dinner, despite the website's claims. The hotel itself, however, was quaint & quiet. Yes, it's old. But the five of us had two adjoining rooms; each room had 2 double beds & the connector was a full bathroom, with an additional half bathroom in one of the rooms. The wallpaper in one of the rooms looked original. The rooms were pretty large, with high ceilings, & everything was clean & comfortable. We'd stay there again. read more

We had a King room with attached twin bed room and shared, huge bathroom. This was perfect for our family. A/C, free wi-fi, free parking, and vouchers for breakfast at Cafe Renee. The Cafe was wonderful. Fresh cookies, warm croissants, and egg-sausage sandwich. The hotel was old and charming in the best way. Staff was polite and friendly. To think that I have driven over the bridge in Lebanon so many times without realizing that this gem of a traditional hotel was nearby! Pros: Rooms are clean, staff is very friendly and welcoming, good location for exploring a lot of Vermont and New Hampshire, prices are extremely reasonable. Cons: It's old and in some cases it shows. There were stains on our ceiling and the door looked like someone had tried to punch a hole in it. Walls are paper thin, if you're a light sleeper this will be a problem for you. Our room was really small which we didn't have a huge problem with but some might. Overall I'd say this was an okay place to stay for one night but I'm glad we weren't going to be there for longer. When I stay in a hotel I like having a place I can go and relax for a little between adventures or before dinner and this wasn't a place where I'd be able to get comfortable. But for one night it was pleasant enough. read more

Hotel Coolidge - Hotels Near Me - White River Junction, Vermont

Coolidge Hotel is not for everybody but I love some of the older hotels. The Coolidge Hotel in White River Junction is out of old cowboy movie. A sprawling white clapboard building with a wide staircase and giant banisters, windows above the room doors, radiators and a saloon-like lobby that had an upright piano. Incidentally, it's not named after the president but after his father. If you know of a book or website on retro hotels please let me know. White River Junction is a ghost town transformed by a young community into something of an artistic oasis with unusual and tasty food places and converted storefronts where designers peddle fine local craft. There's one vintage clothes store that's worth a detour. It's called 'Revolution' (shoptherev.com). read more

Calling this hotel run down is an understatement. We took showers when we first arrived and the room smelled damp and moldy for HOURS. The bed was literally the most uncomfortable I've ever slept in, in my life with ROCK HARD pillows. EVERYTHING was musty. The walls are PAPER THIN and you can hear every single conversation both in the hall and the next room. You absolutely hear the train, which no one bothered to mention to us. For long term residence at the Coolidge House, or even short at the hotel, look elsewhere. The whole places is crawling with spiders, basic amenities aren't in great working order, and the hotel staff could care less about you even though you're paying over $600 in rent depending on room size. Additionally elevator is slow, very very verrrrrrry slooooooow. Free coffee is no longer served. They'll make you buy it now. If you are lucky enough to end up with a fridge in your room, beware putting stuff in there for too long. As the fridge will freeze liquids solid. And forget about a whole lot of privacy, as most of the doors to the outside hallway have sizeable cracks under them from which anybody could just stand there and hear everything you're saying. Beware if you are staying on a Friday or Saturday as well. There is a bar directly across the street and if you're a light sleeper, the drunken antics of people coming and going will keep you up. Last mention is a story, went to the bathroom to wash hands, now water comes out. Figure they are doing work or something so let it be.
