Not a bad place to stay if you're looking for a family friendly, laid back place this is it. The beach is nice, decent pool, plus 2 hot tubs (however the hot tub water looked like rather suspect so we stayed out)
We stayed in an ocean view room with balcony and while the room itself could use some touching up (especially the paint) for the price you couldnt beat it. We booked this room because we didn't want to have to go to a restaurant for every meal. Having a full kitchen was important to us. This room had a Living room with T.V, dining room/ kitchen, bedroom with T.V. & bathroom. The unit was very spacious. The kitchen had all the cooking utensils needed and plenty of dishware which was excellent. Pots, pans, even storage containers.
Housekeeping staff were great, if we left a note asking for something in the room or even for recommendations they always responded. (I made sure to leave a nice tip on the table for them when we left) speaking of staff, the housekeepers were the most friendly, I got the feeling that everyone else really didnt want to be there. I felt like I was bothering them, even when I was checking in. That is one of the reasons for my 3 stars instead of 4.
The downside of Casa Maya is the location for walking to "town" it's very safe but it is a distance. You could take a bus but they were all very crowded and with Covid we were uncomfortable doing that. You could use and uber or taxi and on the days that the long walk was just to much that's what we did. The bus was the only thing that we were uncomfortable with regarding Covid. Everywhere else you go you have to sanitize and have your temp taken. In stores you have to wear a mask. Even the grocery store, sanitize & temp at the door. I know some people have freaked out about "their rights" but I am all for it and I appreciated the feeling that covid was being taken seriously. I can honestly say that I felt safer health wise with regard to Covid in Mexico than I have in the U.S.
The other drawback (for me) was how incredibly mello the hotel was. There is 1 bar and seperate restaurant inside and the same outside. They didnt keep the bar staffed and when it was the person seemed like he would have rather been anywhere else. The drinks weren't really worth it. You're better off going to the store to make your drinks yourself. I'm by no means and alcoholic but I like the atmosphere of a bar with music. Casa Maya doesn't have that. The food in the restaurant was mediocre but that was okay because we had a full kitchen in our room!
The games by the pool daily were geared towards the kids which was nice for them. This is really good hotel for families with kids. If you're looking for the fun all inclusive feel for adults this isn't it (the hotel does have an all inclusive option, I am SO glad we didnt pay for it, I would have been very upset) We stayed at Riu Las Americas last time and while the food wasnt very tasty there was a huge selection & the entertainment at the pool was on point. (Both trips were during covid so equal comparison)
Overall I was satisfied and for the price I really shouldnt complain all. If I was looking for that homelike set-up I would definitely stay again. read more
