It pains me to write a bad review of The Breakers Inn because I've loved staying there since I was a child and I always looked forward to my next visit to the inn with the amazing view, the luxurious spa tubs, thoughtfully decorated rooms, and courteous and conscientious staff that made every guest feel like a VIP. All of that changed drastically upon our last stay. Our room had no towels or toiletries, one bedside lamp was out of order, and the mini fridge where we wanted to store some water bottles was broken. Also, the room appeared to be in a state of disrepair, with a towel rack haphazardly affixed to the wall with gummy beige caulking and the bathroom wall paint looking unfinished. The first night, the staff brought us bathroom supplies and a light bulb for the bedside lamp (for us to replace ourselves) and they quickly replaced the broken mini fridge with one that worked well. We left the room the next morning to enjoy a nice day along the coast and returned to our room after dark, eager to relax in front of the fire before we turned in for the night. When we entered our room, we saw that the room had not been turned over (the bed was unmade, bathroom towels were still lying damp on the floor (where the sign says to leave them if you'd like new ones for the next day), the Duraflame log ashes were still in the fireplace and the log hadn't been replaced, and the bathroom and living area trash cans hadn't been emptied). I called the front desk and spoke briefly with an unnamed housekeeping employee who apathetically asked, "So do you want me to come make your bed?" and then was put on hold for employee Rhonda who advised me she'd been the hotel's manager until new ownership took over last week. She was rude and dismissive of my concerns with the state of our room, simply placing the blame on me for not putting out the "please make up the room" sign on our door before leaving that morning. Rhonda admitted upon further questioning that it was not a requirement that customers put out this sign if they wanted their room turned over, but that "sometimes housekeeping gets nervous about entering rooms they aren't sure need attention". I still don't know what to say about that logic. Rhonda also offered to give us a luxury room for the night but refused to have an employee move our bags. Since we were tired from our day and didn't relish the idea of packing our things and dragging them across the hotel to a different room so late in the evening, we declined the awkward offer. Rhonda and the housekeeping employee showed up at our door five minutes later with a basket of towels and a Duraflame log and a vase of half-dead, haphazardly arranged roses. Rhonda thrust the vase at me with a stiff, "I'm sorry you're frustrated," and offered to make the bed. At that point, I no longer wanted to deal with her, so I declined her offer and my fiancé and I attempted to enjoy the rest of our night. The next morning, my fiancé and I went to the front desk to check out and to ask for a moment of the manager's time to discuss how we felt about our stay, as we felt that we didn't receive the experience we paid for. The front desk employee called General Manager Dave who lives on site in an apartment above the lobby. Dave refused to speak to us in person and directed his employee to take 20% off of our bill "or whatever makes them happy". What would have made me happy is for Dave to have made contact with us in person to acknowledge our concerns. We gave Rhonda and Dave multiple opportunities to remedy the situation and both chose to blow us off. The front desk employee made excuses for Dave and Rhonda, and we left with a small discount on our bill and a bad taste in our mouths. In the bigger picture, we may not matter much to the hotel's bottom line, but we will not be back. We worked hard for the money we spent at The Breakers Inn, and we were nowhere near satisfied with our stay. I hope they read this and understand that all it would have taken to appease us was a heartfelt apology, a handshake, and a promise it won't happen again to us or to any other guests. Instead, we were dismissed. I am embarrassed on their behalf and I don't think they'll be in business much longer if they continue to treat their customers this way. read more
