The quote also happened to be the cheapest of the 3 companies I got bids from. - The installation went very smoothly. I understand that direct vent water heaters are a little tricky to install, but Brandon installed perfectly. He arrived on time, got rid of our old water heater, and added a new water heater with several fixes: the overflow pipe now runs to the sink, he used a "flex vent" kit so the water heater can sit on the ground, and he put the water heater in a tray to reduce issues from slow leaks since I don't have a basement drain. - After the install, Brandon taught me how to change the temp / turn the water heater off / how to flush it / how to change the anode rod. Very pleased with the work and my new water heater is working flawlessly. The only downside was that there was no permit. I'm no expert on permits. Portland's website says that water heater changes require a permit. Brandon said it's a "gray area" for residential. This is the company we hired to install both water heaters (one in 2013 [gas], the other in 2019 [electric]), replacing the ones we inherited when we bought the house in 2003. We were impressed with their work on the replacements, and were again impressed with the work that happened this week. There was nothing wrong with either heater, but it had been a while since the gas heater in particular had been checked; we scheduled a service call, fully expecting to be told that the heater might need replacing due to its age. Jesse did an excellent, thorough job. He had to replace the anode rod which was full of minerals, but that was it. He did not tell us it was time to replace the heater, and in fact told us the heater was probably good for another 7 years and we could wait 5 years to get it checked again.
