I was staying at the Marriott courtyard down the street and needed to fill up my rental car before my flight back to DFW and stumbled on this place. I didn't really know what to expect because the name is pretty generic but when I came in I was greeted by the culture of Brazil. Friendly and courteous staff really put my mind at ease with the unfamiliarity. I ordered the #8 special. Don't ask me how to pronounce it because I won't be able to but it was great. It's a huge portion of meat with a great sauce that covers it. I would suggest one plate for two people because I couldn't finish it. I was pleasantly surprised. This was my 2nd time at Hot Spot Diner, the first time was a few months ago for breakfast, which was okay. Today I had the Jose's Chicken at the recommendation of a friend who is a regular here. The dish is a little spicy because of the curry, but it was absolutely delicious. I enjoyed every morsel. I took my left overs home to have for dinner at work, but ended up eating it before I got to work that evening. The prices were very reasonable as were the portion size. In addition I had the Spanish fries (home-made potato chips) which were a great addition. I came to eat/play a soccer game (we rented an hour long session) I arrived outside with my boyfriend and his brother. The owner immediately started getting loud in Spanish, yelling that we weren't allowed to bring Gatorade or any company (referring to me, I am a woman, a paying customer, and a soccer player). He then went over to other men who were coming in for this same game, yelling "once they bring in one then they'll bring 2,3,30,40...they'll bring their wives, their kids, their cousins, all of them!! Lastly he said "She needs to go home and watch the kids". He then proceeded to run over to me, yell in my face once more, without a mask on, and tell me he would not serve me, "get out!". Place is not just a diner has a decent open area for summer time fun. Place seems to caters to larger dinner parties. I was there with about twenty people. Service was slow. Food did not come out all at once. You had to keep reminding waiter to bring more pitchers of Sangria (which was not very strong). Being Cuban I'm pretty critical on the way Spanish food should taste. The food has a long way to go to meet Newark standards. This is my 3rd time here in 2 years. read more

Went there 10/30/2015 to see the Portuguese kids. The show was awesome. But when we got there some other people had just randomly sat at our table and refused to get up. The place refused to kick the people out of our table to their own table. It was a mess and the people who worked there could care less. I would not go back ever !! The restaurant was a former favorite of mine. I've attended over a dozen events at the Hot Spot and thoroughly enjoyed both the venue and the food. As a result, I recommended it to a friend of mine to host a birthday party for approximately 50 people. Unfortunately, the restaurant contacted her two hours ahead of time to tell her that they could not accommodate her. We scrambled to find a last minute venue as people were en route from Philadelphia, New York, and central/north and south Jersey. The word disappointed doesn't begin to describe our experience. As a result of the last minute cancellation, some people didn't attend because they couldn't travel to central NJ to the new venue, or because they didn't get word of the change. We ended up with approximately 25 people. The restaurant could have a made a nice profit from our crowd, who is mature in age and tends to spend generously on food and drink.
